Great one in terms of inclusion and diversity in our Slot Car World. I've just picked up the red No 3 Ford GT MkII - Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant. The fit and finish is remarkable and the hue is a slightly orange rich blood red and the detailing with things like the intricate relief chromed bodywork latches is right up there with the best of 1:18 static modelling albeit the cockpit tray is moderately detailed black painted lexan as this thing means business. The gear mesh looks spot on OOB too and the tyre decals are relatively durable to handling for disassembly. The blue No 2 car was another Gurney/Grant outing only from the previous outing at Sebring 12h 1966 and if you look closely you will see 'the Gurney Bubble' on the roof of both of these which is missing from the bronze Donoghue No 4 car. Dan was reportedly 6'4" tall and struggled with headroom in the cabin with his helmet on. There's even a change to the carburettor which informs through the rear window as the evolution of the car progressed between these two races. In both instances the Gurney/Grant car retired from the lead. In Sebring the car just died on Gurney with a three lap lead at night in Sebring's citrus belt and this on the last lap. Dan's attempts to push the car over the finishing line using leg power led to disqualification. In Le Mans, this pair's No3 car was leading from Miles/Hulme come 09:00 in the morning when the thing blew a head gasket. The GT40 Mk II's engine failure was actually a blessing in disguise, as it allowed the Ford Engine and Foundry team to examine the engine's components and improve. The team developed a dynamometer "tape" of Le Mans to test the engines under race conditions. This allowed them to create an engine that could run for up to 48 hours, which is twice as long as the race itself.

Before you gave that honorable mention to AFX, you should have bought all three varieties to see how, or if, they ran out of the box. A good looking body alone doesn’t cut it when the gears are bad, wheels aren’t properly pressed on, etc.

If you had a bad experience with an AFX product, contact them for a replacement. I know they stand behind their products. I've purchased quite a few AFX cars and never had an issue.
