Your channel seriously goes underappreciated man. Like damn other channels make "Prime" style music and only use one original sample. And here you are tracking down the actual equipment used, replicating the music, explaining how it's made, and making your own LEGIT Prime style music. I really hope you get more recognition because you're seriously doing gods work. Thank you for your hard work man!!!
Metroid has always been influenced by electronic music. Diving deeper, it's literally a club experience, within a sci-fi tale. Taken apart, shifted, where no two songs are alike.
Those low crashes give me shivers. I think it's worth trying lowing the pitches on those even more and adding reverb because they could be used in the Dark Aether themes in Metroid Prime 2, notably the Dark Temple Grounds. I love These Prime sample videos, man! Keep em up!
I really hope some of this stuff is used again in the Metroid Prime 4 soundtrack. I am absolutely amazed by what you found out. Thank you for sharing this!
I think it's because the ER-1 uses NRPN messages. Those messages are in 14-bit instead of MIDI's 7-bit, so it allows more resolution for adjusting parameters. That being said, it looks like there's an aftermarket firmware update that can add CC control to the ER-1! electribe.cc/wp/2018/06/23/receive-cc/
I always walk away from these videos feeling like my mind's been expanded. Thank you for these. If you can do this for other games with really unique sounds to them (like Perfect Dark, P.N.03, Deus Ex, etc.) that would be awesome. Understanding the "How" of music production, especially with the equipment used for older soundtracks i think is genuinely under-explored.
I had one of these and it is a blast! Had to get rid of it because the knobs had jitter that just kept on getting worse. Shoulda kept it for the sequencer bc it's very easy & fun to use. If you're looking to buy one, ask about the knobs!!! :v)
Very good advice, thanks for pointing that out! Yes, the knobs seem to be the first thing to go on the Electribes. And that makes the CC problem even moreso of an issue.
Thank you so much! I totally agree, the VA engine that Korg developed is just so freaking good, it doesn't surprise me to see it still in use to this day. Again, I can't thank you enough for your video on the Microkorg/MS2000 patches in Metroid Prime. Without your initial discoveries, I wouldn't be here doing this today.
Phenomenal, just phenomenal. I've been combing through your channel tonight and just feeling an entire almost 20 year long quest just click into place, ever since I was a child and had no idea how any of this stuff was made. The sounds that made Metroid Prime have been something I've wanted to discover for quite some time, and it was just through random recommends watching some AM2R stuff that I finally was brought here. I'd given up hope for a long time that I'd ever find out, especially since the synth world is not really my forte. Thank you for figuring these things out.
ive spent years trying to find info on metroids music production and finally the algorithm lead me to you. thank you! i listened to some of your songs too and i really like them!
Hope you know this is the most blessed video series on this website. It's a delightful surprise to see the ER-1 in here. Not sure if this is obvious or not, or if it matters, but, the sound of those drum loops is unmistakable, Prime(Per)1 was definitely programmed _on_ the ER-1 using the onboard automation to control the delay depth, which is a lot quicker and easier than MIDI CC. The claps are truncating the crashes in that pattern because the two samples can't play simultaneously. I don't know that that's true for any of the other uses of the ER-1 in Prime, but it might be worth experimenting with. Needless to say, excellent work, and thank you.
How would I create these same sound effects in FL Studio? Is there a digital version of this device I could use as a plug-in, or do I have to buy this physical device and then connect it to my computer to operate in my DAW?
Loved the video! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the research here. This game is really close to my heart, so hearing more about the sound development behind it is fascinating :)
Interesting! You say in the video that it's a groovebox, does it function as a drum machine only or can it also midi sequence external gear? Also, thank you for your research and videos on this OST, I fell in love with the brilliant synth that the MS2000R is, and got myself one! 😊
I wonder if you would like to be one of the additional composer for my project for Doom 2, but I do predict that the Soundtrack will be like a mix of Metroid Prime & DOOM with Darksynths.
It's either Proteus 2000/Virtuoso 2000 sounds or EastWest Symphonic Orchestra; whatever Yamamoto-san used, I ultimately think it was not a step in the right direction for MP3's soundtrack (this is just my personal opinion). In MP3, there's not enough of the chilling ambience and synth sounds that really made the OSTs for the first two games really stand out.

That means a lot to me, thank you so much!
he really is working hard for this. and it's my favorite game and music as well. The world is beautiful
i agree
When you recreated Phendrana Drifts, my mind was blown :00. All this archeologist-like research is a treat to learn about. Love your work man.
Dude yes! I was trying to find some of these sounds in uncivilized g'rooves. It's impressive how smart Yamamoto is.

At the very least that slowed down crash cymbal. Goosebumps every time.
Man this is so cool. Huge props to you for doing all this research!
Bro I just want to say you are a G and you enlightened me on something pivotal yet familiar to childhood
Wow this was some great research! I still have my ER-1 from back in the day...time to knock the dust off of it!!
This channel needs to blow up!
been wanting to incorporate metroid prime style synths and sounds for my music. your channel has been a lifesaver for that, thank you for your work
Three CC assignments to automate one parameter seems like a nightmare... I wonder what Korg's reasoning for that was?
I think it's because the ER-1 uses NRPN messages. Those messages are in 14-bit instead of MIDI's 7-bit, so it allows more resolution for adjusting parameters. Great work once again! I really love that Korg signature sound because of this game. And still today I spot MK and MS2000 presets in music today.

@@SynaMax Thank you so much for these kind words. Really made my day.
I like the slowed version of Agon Stroll you used for the video
you're a legend
Bro this is CRAZY GOOD! I have no clue how you don't have a few million subscribers. Remember us when you're famous!
Just gotta say I love your channel! Please don't stop uploading!

Yamamoto-San is indeed great. Nice find Max!
Awesome!! Thank you and the others for the research and for uploading this!

Dude I somehow only just now discovered you. You rock, keep doing what you’re doing.
Any chance you could upload a zip with all this related stuff? I know alot of ppl would be interested

Love your channel man. Thanks for the effort, this is awesome

Super cool. Finding out the sample libraries that Tekken 3 used would be a neat video.

This is so fascinating! I've often wondered how metroid music is made
Great work as always 👏 as a korg fan it make me happy to see that all these machines were used 🙌
Very very interesting. Thank you. Does somebody kniw where to get the samples?
Really great video man, good work here!
I should be in bed, but this is really interesting XD Thanks a ton for these videos, really, really interesting stuff!
I love your work!
I really hope this samples got re-used in Metroid Prime 4 soundtrack.

After looking at the manual, I can confirm that it can be synchronized with other gear, including the EA-1.
I love metroid games😍❤️💜💙
it has the same cb_hat from FL studio
You deserve a phd for this stuff lol.
It was very interesting video :))
i really love the Prime's music
What's the outro song?
It's a slowed down version of my "Moth Alien Winter" track. I might upload it later if there's enough interest.
@@SynaMax Well, there's interest from me : )
@@doclouis4236 Okay then :) I'll upload it next week!

this shit is so cool🤯
I came. I saw. I came again.
Thanks
Do you have a discord?
Bro you already knew the Korg ER-1 and Korg EA-1 were used.
😍
Prime 3 was odd. Was it because the music strayed from the killer synth world and included those trashy wii strings?

Totally agree. The vibe in 3 is so different.
That was better when you didn't speak and you were going straight to the essential.
