With four contra-rotating propellers
Around for 50 years now, it first appeared publicly outside the Soviet Union at the 1965 Paris Air Show.
Since then, the model has been used in major military and humanitarian airlifts for the Soviet Union and Russia.
The aircraft is capable of 460mph and has a staggering 211ft wingspan.
Its capacity is considerable, with its hold able to swallow 80,000kg of cargo, including oversized items such as battle tanks
Ан-22 «Анте́й» («изделие 100», по кодификации НАТО: Cock - «Петух») - советский тяжёлый турбовинтовой транспортный самолёт. Первый советский широкофюзеляжный самолёт, самый большой в мире турбовинтовой самолёт. Предназначен для перевозки на большие расстояния тяжёлой и крупногабаритной боевой техники и войск, а также для десантирования парашютным и посадочным способами воздушных десантов.
Первый полёт выполнил в 1965 году. Серийно произведено 68 экземпляров, включая два для прочностных испытаний. Использовался в ВВС СССР, продолжает использоваться в ВВС РФ и украинской авиакомпании «Antonov Airlines».

Nothing screams pure power than the turboprops from an Antonov plane.

Этот борт 13.01.1989 года во время взлета в Адене (Йемен) из-за преждевременной уборки шасси потерпел аварию. В течение 8 месяцев восстанавливали на месте и 12.12.1989 года своим ходом перегнан на капитальный ремонт в Киев. С тех он у нас, в КБ "Антонов".
Практически все транспортники имеют свои аналоги (Ан-12 и С-130, Ан-124 и С-5), а для Ан-22 и Ан-225 аналогов нет.

Когда этот борт ремонтировали я только пришел работать в КБ "Антонов", отдел фюзеляжа как раз выпускал ремонтную документацию.

@@topfelya You're welcome! Good video and good sound: no people voices, no dogs, no sparrows, no traffic. I live in Kiev (Antonov factory location) and remember the sound of the first An-22 (1965, the biggest plane in the world). I was 3 years old :-)

Those engines looks so small yet they pack a big punch for this size of a beast
they are turboprops, so no cold fans arround the hot turbines like modern turbojets...efficiency is much better than turbojets because the size from the props (6.20m diameter) and the counterotative props who increase the efficiency ...The specific sound comes from the air shearing between the props...(no supersonic tips like some did claim)

I live in South Manchester and this flew pretty much right over my house on this day. I was at home at the time and it was so loud it set car alarms of in my street, I've never heard anything like it.

Sounds like the original C-5 Galaxy's engines, the GE TF39.
I work under the flightplan of EGCC (Heald Green) and the noise of this aircraft (a few days ago) startled me. I'm guessing this was the 2nd arrival since it took off on this occasion on 23R/L rather than 05L

tbh never seen an aircraft of this size being just made to be airborne. have seen numerous take offs of the fat girl, and it's like they don't even have to roll her as she just somehow suspends her into the air by her herself and starts to climb.

@@PushyPawn The video is not doctored. It is just like using a slow Frame rate video or film camera to film a wheel. Or the situation where your brain sees a car traveling next to you at high speed and the wheels look like they are spinning backwards.
It is a camera limitation. Go take your mobile telephone or video camera and film a spinning object and you will see the same effect. Moreover, the counter rotating propellers are inefficient and slow to accelerate. They have two props, that means it either takes twice as much energy to spin both props on one engine or twice as long using the same energy. basic physics is why such propellers are rarely used.
