Thermochromic Pigment Paint

  • In this video I mix up a batch of thermochromic pigment with white acrylic paint. When heat is applied, the black thermochromic paint turns transparent and reveals whatever color it was mixed it (i.e. white).
    I also show a small segment which was mixed with a transparent acrylic glue. This means the top layer is black (or gray) and when heat is applied, it turns transparent and you see whatever color is underneath (orange)
    In the video you can see my thermochromic table which is fun to play with.

    I would want to make a painting with a hidden message underneath.
    If I painted the message, let it dry and then put the transparent version (what did you use as a base paint to make it turn transparent?) over it, it should reveal the message only when heated, right?

  • @johnknoefler

    I would use it on the top of my van. The first coat would be a highly reflective white paint to reduce summer heat. Then I would like a clear coat with this pigment as dark as possible. Then, in winter my van would heat up quicker because it's dark. Then in summer it would turn clear to reflect the sunlight and cool the surface of my van. Actually, it would be great for my whole van.

    This is what I plan to do: I will print an image of a pig on a piece of printing paper. Then I draw on it with a mixed paint made with blue thermochromic pigment and elmers glue. After that dries, I draw a few lines with another mixed paint of red thermochromic pigment and elmers glue. After that dries as well, if I cover the paper with my palm for 30 seconds, can I expect the pig to appear, because all the other layers have become clear? My second question is, when mixing the blue thermochromic pigment with elmers glue, can I use water? Or is that a bad idea?

    You're very likable. For instance, when you tried to stick the brush into the bottle. I actually enjoyed that part. It could have gone South real quick, but there's something about you. Seriously, good stuff. Recently, I purchased black pigment and performed a few quick tests. Since, my head has been spinning with ideas. You've shed light into other directions. Thanks. I'll share my creation when complete. Think conductive ink, touchpoint (non-touch), Arduino, sensor, heating element. Coming soon!

    • @GadgetAddict

      That's the idea, but expect the green to turn a kind of murky green. So you might prefer to paint the surface of your object with green and then mix the pigment with a clear acrylic instead.

    hi can you please help me? i'm desperate for assistance.
    I'm using Turn Thermo thermochromatic pigment, mixed with speedball's transparent base (says for screen printing, but people on amazon say it works fine with the thermo pigment?).
    The consistancy is strange and a jelly form. As i apply it, it gets scrapped off in the process, so i cannot make an even spread.
    Please help? Am i not using the right type of transparent base? (because i think they sent me the wrong product, but i'm not sure).
    PLEASE HELP ))):

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  10 років тому

      I've never tried mixing it with that exact substance. It can be very hard to get the pigment to mix with certain things and just takes a lot of time folding it in/mixing it. Have you tried with something else like a clear acrylic glue or wallpaper paste or even white paint as a test?

    • @omgitsCLO
      @omgitsCLO 10 років тому

      Gadget Addict Thank you so much for replying! *cries*
      i'm not quite sure what you mean by clear acrylic glue? Can you give me an example?
      and i cannot use pigmented paint, as i would like it to be clear when heated.
      I am painting this on paper, as you are. What can you recommend to get an even coat with a good consistency? (not a jelly form that scraps off while being applied)

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  10 років тому +1

      omgitsCLO I understand you want a clear coat, but mixing a small amount with white acrylic would let you know if the problem is with the base or your pigment itself. Many people use wall paper paste or any liquid transparent glue that they can find at the hardware store. I've not experienced the problem that you're having. Although I have found it difficult to apply to some surfaces, like plastics.

      +Rashawn Dunston It will change the color of the paint to the color of the pigment. So if you want pink top coat, buy pink pigment and mix it in with white paint of transparent glue. It will appear pink until it gets heated up, at which point it will reveal whatever color is below it.

    I'm also interested with heat/uv changing paint. I wonder if it will last if used with car paint. Most prob a uv protectant will be needed. Can you try it with your ride?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  10 років тому

      You need to put a UV protecting coat on top of the paint. I gave my table two coats of the thermochromic paint and then a couple of coats with a clear UV protecting spray paint. It gets hit with the sun for a couple of hours a day and doesn't seem to have suffered. To make it look good on a car you'd really want to get it professionally sprayed and that's a pretty big commitment, so unfortunately I can't try it myself right now :p

      Abigail Nieves You'd mix the pigment with the pink paint and then paint it onto a surface. The surface would look black and then when you put your hand on it the black would turns transparent and you'd see the pink. Or you can buy an alternative color to the black pigment.
