From "From(tv series)" to straight down here. Heard so much 80's ballads before. Never heard of this underrated masterpiece. Man! This is actually an underrated one!❤
I used to sing this song as a lullaby to both my kids when they were little. Which means I probably sang it twice a day for at least 4 years. That's what? Close to 3000 times? Still not tired of it.
I can proudly admit that while I am a metalhead at heart - I grew up listening to Lyle Lovett. I've seen him live more than ALL the metal bands I've seen live. Lyle Lovett is one of my guilty pleasures.

Lyle's music is beyond country...it's almost a genre unto itself. I saw this guy on the Joshua Judges Ruth tour and it's still one of the most moving concerts I have ever seen. When he did " She's Already Made Up Her Mind " you could have heard a pin drop. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

I only recently started watching From, and I do remember this song from the 80s, but watching From made me wanted to listen to the whole thing again. It's such a perfect song.
I agree, this song is everything you could hope for in a ballad. What the hell was Julia Roberts thinking divorcing this Albert Einstein of the country-western music world!? I think Track #3 of Joshua Judges Ruth (*She's Already Made Up Her Mind*) was all about his marriage with Julia Roberts ending.
I swear these are possibly the GREATEST song lyrics ever. Nothing but a superb imagination allied to a fantastic lyrical ability attached to a brilliant musical talent could have conceived it. Greatest ever? Definitely top 10 in the history of the universe. So far...
Country music has the feels of loneliness, peacefulness, and life without stress and relaxing while sitting on the balcony of a house in a town and also nostalgic.
Every time I cover this on stage or in small rooms, people just light up. Some cry. All love it. Taught it to old goth rockers who never heard of it, they flat love it.
One of my favourite memories as a kid was when my father took me to the beach (we lived within walking distance) and we would listen to this song and watch the sun rise. Thank you for the memories, autre fois.
I just hope it doesn't lose its way. Some shows like 'From" just keep piling on more weirdness and after a while you have a jumble you don't care about. Hope that doesn't happen.
My Mom died in 2009 - 2 years after that I picked up my guitar and started playing again... I guess she is proud. Greatings from Germany and many thanks for this song!!

Not sure anyone else will ever fully feel what this song means to me. Damn... Maybe not even Lyle himself. I didn't know my mother much. She left me with my dad when I was a baby. But one of the few memories I have of her was going to see her in her apartment when I was 8 or 9 and she played this album and I jumped on the bed laughing and trying to get the record to skip. This song is literally the sound of nostalgia in my head.
He began playing this song in 2011 at a concert in Houston and I was mesmerized, as it is one of my favorite songs he does. Just an excellent entertainer. The whole band is as sharp as a Rolex watch........... well worth seeing in person.

I was in a similar situation as you. I heard this song on the radio back in 1993when I was 13yrs old, which was, obviously, prior to the internet being anywhere near what it is now. If I had 1/2 a penny for every song that I had to wait year and years just to have the ability to search for them in on the internet, I'd be richer than Bill Gates. LMFAO. I remember having several notebooks full of band names, lyrics, song titles, and lyrics I thought were song titles. Those notebooks saved my ass a lot years down the road. :-)
Yes!! Don’t (didn’t) really know Lyle.... apart from him being married to Julia for a while. Introduced via a great scene from The Interpreter - Sean Penn in some anguish from a recent loss unplugs the jukebox in a busy bar & puts this beautiful tune on. With the magic of Shazam I was immediately introduced and within the space of 24 hours I reckon I’ve listened to it 30 times already(!) And just starting to explore Lyle’s other songs... 👍
There was a moment in the late 80's, early 90's - I'm too old to remember now - when popular country artists seemed to be getting back to real country music. Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakam, the Mavericks. I really like that. Pontiac is still one of the best records I've ever heard.
Lyle Lovett has been a favorite for decades. Love his original creativity...and his is such a gentleman each appearance. Taped a TV program years ago about his coming home to Austin. Someone "took" it...and it was never offered as a CD. It was superb with a large orchestra of musicians. Thanks, Lyle Lovett for being you. bitsy
My absolute favorite Lyle Lovett song. Saw him last night in Springfield, Missouri. As always, the Large Band and Lyle brought the crowd to their feet many times.
I was lucky enough to catch Lyle and his large band when I was about 13 or so I think, Red Rocks Colorado. Such a great show. I love this dude's music Still
How could you not love ban the man it's such a positive wonderful thing I'm so glad that he is part of this morning thank you man. The man. Lots of smiles thank you so much
Brilliant!!! Thanks Mr. Lovett for this jewel of composing! What a "wunderbar" song!! Love it! Also very good the cover from "Still Alice" by Karen Elson! Greetings from Germany, B.L.
my dad used to listen to lyle, thankfully "Still Alice" brought me back, great memories, great movie, great song and the cover by karen elson is beautiful (perfect ending to that movie)
I was vaguely familiar with this song in the 80's. In about '94, I was at a concert by the great Nova Scotia Celtic- folk band The Rankin Family. As the crowd slowly left the hall, this guitar picking came over the speakers, and I KNEW who it was before a word was sung. I went out the next day, bought "Lyle Lovett," "Pontiac," and "Joshua Judges Ruth."I became such a fan, and travelled from eastern Canada to Portland, Maine in 2004 to catch his show. I've seen U2, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Don McLean and The nitty Gritty Dirt Band live, but somehow they don't quite stack up as high.
@Lyle Lovett Hi Lyle, that would be great, thank you. I've always loved your music 🎵 I heard one of your songs on the radio for the first time about 25 years ago ( Nobody knows me) and I used to sing it to my sons growing up. I went straight out and bought that CD and played it all the time. God bless you my Texan cousin. Shaun UK 👍♥️🇬🇧🇺🇸
Many years ago, I heard a live cover of this song by a bluegrass band who's name I cant recall. They told a story about the song.... Lyle Lovett was talking to a little boy, and asked him, "If you could have anything in the world, what would you want?" The boy answered, "A boat. And a pony." That was the inspiration for the song. It captures the beauty and innocence and humor of childhood. It's one of the most perfect songs ever written.
Must have been a fantastic show. Two masterful storytellers (and great musicians to boot) working side-by-side. I'd pay to see that. "If An Okie Had A Boat"
Space Ghost: You are sadly correct. Private radio is more about money, than music quality. Lyle is, however, very much country music. A good percentage gospel, folk, and some rock too.
This was my late husband's favorite Lyle Lovett song because it's so quirky. I found Lyle back in 1993 and have been a huge fan ever since. There are many versions of Lyle doing this song on UA-cam but this appears to be one of the originals. He even kinda grins when he says "kiss my ass". He's not like that in the slightest most of the time, but he's a human, too. For all who love Lyle, this is one of our favorite songs. Hope you enjoy it. Happy Holidays, Lyle and April, et al!
I had a best friend once named, Timothy Bryant, that use to sing this song while playing it on his acoustic guitar, he sings it even better than this original .Or maybe my love for him made it sound better to me anyway. I still have a copy of him performing this song, I listen to it probably once every 2 or 3 years, but when ever I do, my eyes fill up with tears.😪 I miss you my friend. 💙
DustyBoots922 Coolest part is that he wrote it in a high school class when the teacher assigned everyone to write about what they wanted to be in life - what type of job or career. He didn’t know. So he sat down and wrote this song. I’d love to know the grade he got!
Have loved Lyle Lovett since early 90's. Husband and I danced to "She's No Lady" at our 1992 wedding. Met Lyle shortly after, gracious and funny. Also love he is a true horseman! #SmartandShiney
One of the greatest and most underrated and underappreciated artists of his generation. A true talent through & through.

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat
If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying an old Dale
Well, it'd just be me and Trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat
The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Well, kiss my ass, I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat
And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat
I said me upon my pony on my boat

Saw this guy (along with Robert Earl Keen) last night at Gruene Hall in Texas! Amazing concert!
Never ceases to amaze me and talented in every way.
I just missed him...again..he was here last nite inBozeman MTand i didnt hear bout it til 6am yesterday..sold out of course
The show From brought me here. What a great tune.
My favorite Lyle Lovett song is the one I happen to be listening to at that moment.
There was a moment in the late 80's, early 90's - I'm too old to remember now - when popular country artists seemed to be getting back to real country music. Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakam, the Mavericks. I really like that. Pontiac is still one of the best records I've ever heard.
Lord I love Luke Lovett's music. We needed him to come along when he did
I cannot believe I'd never heard this BRILLIANTLY EPIC song before today!
hahahaha
Hands up if The TV show "from" brought you here.... Awesome
From the TV series
Hahaha, ahhh god!!!
Lyle Lovett has been a favorite for decades. Love his original creativity...and his is such a gentleman each appearance. Taped a TV program years ago about his coming home to Austin. Someone "took" it...and it was never offered as a CD. It was superb with a large orchestra of musicians. Thanks, Lyle Lovett for being you. bitsy
I'm very pleased to know I'm not the only one that loves the music of Lyle Lovett, but when last did you watch his favorite music!?
thank you for listening to my music🎶❤️❤️❤️
My absolute favorite Lyle Lovett song. Saw him last night in Springfield, Missouri. As always, the Large Band and Lyle brought the crowd to their feet many times.
I was lucky enough to catch Lyle and his large band when I was about 13 or so I think, Red Rocks Colorado. Such a great show. I love this dude's music Still
@Lyle Lovett
Wow, I just saw you will be back at Red Rocks July 5th!
Just a reminder of my father , such a wonderful song
How could you not love ban the man it's such a positive wonderful thing I'm so glad that he is part of this morning thank you man. The man. Lots of smiles thank you so much
Got here from a TV show called " from " , hell of a song I love it love it love it ❤
Brilliant!!! Thanks Mr. Lovett for this jewel of composing!
What a "wunderbar" song!!
Love it!
Also very good the cover from "Still Alice" by Karen Elson!
Greetings from Germany,
B.L.
my dad used to listen to lyle, thankfully "Still Alice" brought me back, great memories, great movie, great song and the cover by karen elson is beautiful (perfect ending to that movie)
Yes the show FROM is where I heard this song from and I’m grateful I heard this tonight on the episode tonight this song is beautiful
I sing this to my kids every night. For the last 8 years, its a bed time staple.
'From' brought me here, better late than never ✌
Ah. One of my favourites. Really touches the soul. Thank you my Texan cousin 👍♥️✝️🇬🇧
Really great song. Nice imagery. Takes your mind on beautiful trip for 3 minutes.
I've been a fan of Lyle Lovett since this song was new. Still one of my favorites
25 years ago, I bought a boat. Couldn’t get this song out of my head.
One of the best balladeers I have ever heard.
I have seen Lyle Lovett five times over the years. Love this man love this man excellent human.
Lyle has a very unique sound, with such control. I hate most country music! I never get sick of this song!!!!!!!!!!
Hey I know you commented this 9yrs ago and prolly won’t see this but this song reminds me so so much of Kenny Rogers the gambling man
The show FROM brought me here
Me 2🥲
me 3
Same here
Saw Lyle Lovett as opener for Merle Haggard, Denver 1987.
Wow, the country singer who actually has something to say opens for Merle Haggard? Lyle is an exacting, yet humble man.
Wow. What a show!
Great artist
Just from FROM . nice track. blessed
An old summer camp song for me. Nothing but good memories ❤️
Hello how are you doing today..,
I love this man. Such a beautiful voice! Great songs!! Thanks Lyle!!
The season 'From' lands me here.
I heard this song in 2007 at my very first Bluegrass Jam.... I had no idea what I was in for!!! Top o' the Mountain 🎵🎶🎵
My favorite song by Lyle. Especially the part about what Tonto says. Go Tonto.
Beautiful discover!!
only lyle could write a hit song about riding a pony on a boat
DustyBoots922 Coolest part is that he wrote it in a high school class when the teacher assigned everyone to write about what they wanted to be in life - what type of job or career. He didn’t know. So he sat down and wrote this song. I’d love to know the grade he got!
@@jennymcmillin5668 Usually at school, they fail you for having creativity. English class may let you go on with it depending on the teacher.
Great song. Jimmy Buffett has a similar theme.
@@jennymcmillin5668 please tell me that story is true.
Kiss my ass, I bought a boat, and I'm going out to sea.
I've loved this song for years...my HS boyfriend put it on a mixtape for me❤❤
Where have I been. Absolute genius.
Lovely melody, marvelous lyrics! Tomorrow I’ll let my students listen this art in English Lesson..
Oh yeah... play this one at my funeral...
I immediately Shazam the hail out of this song and it led me here. I can rest now lol 😂 thanks epix
FROM s01e08 ❤
Me love the show can't wait to see season 3
Have loved Lyle Lovett since early 90's. Husband and I danced to "She's No Lady" at our 1992 wedding. Met Lyle shortly after, gracious and funny. Also love he is a true horseman! #SmartandShiney
He's the loveliest man!
thank you so much for listening to my music🎶❤️❤️❤️
This is beautiful. Song suits every event in life. Thankyou
