I salute you! 🫡 you have a lot of patience. BTW, I have a round table, app. 40 + cms. It's from Mexico, I believe from the State of Michoacan. This is black, with the same lacquered black paint as the box you fixed, with a beautiful design that starts in the middle, (a huge basket with tons of flowers). It belonged to my Mom. But when they moved to another country, the poor table lost a leg, there were 3 legs and there was a long one coming down from under the table's center, and the 3 legs came out from it. Ther have an "S" form and come out like spider legs from the end of that long one. (Hope you understand.) One of the S legs is off, it doesn't fit anymore in its place, it seems like it is swollen. The top of the table can be folded and that's what makes it uns-table. I brought it home. I put something on the table, and went out, when I came back, it was on the floor. A big chunk of the edge of the table was broken, the paint "fell" 😢 and I kept the table it just because it was my Mom's heirloom to me. Could you please tell me what soap you used to clean it and the water + soap ratio? What glue can I use to glue the broken leg and part of the round table, too?
Very much appreciated cris. Ohh no 😞I feel your pain. Repairing this type of damage can be quite difficult id suggest using a reputable restorer as some equipment is needed. However if your willing to give it a shot I will list my suggestions. Use a pva glue, I use titebond 2. You will need to find a way of clamping the broken joints together, you can buy your self some clamps 🗜️ just make sure you get ones with rubber tips and ensure the broken joints are making contact (glue squeezing out) just use regular dish soap and water, a teaspoon in a cup of water is sufficient. Anyway if you have any issues just shoot me a message. 👍🙂
Wonderful job! Thank you for sharing all the steps. Would you tell us what pain you used? Saw the can of paint for the black, but for the interior and bottom? acrylic?
Thank you Anna! Yes I apologise for not showing the product 😅 I used white knight black gloss spray paint for the outside. I used the same brand water based gloss black acrylic for the inside. 👍
I am undertaking a similar reatoration including wiring in new led lights (mine has a moving rickshaw and two lights inside), which isnt a problem, but i do have a couple questions about your thoughts on painting: For the plain black areas i intend to follow your lead. Some filler along marred edges, a light sanding, a spray paint acrylic paint/primer and possibly some bottled gloss acrylic over that to even up.... But the top of mine has a gold painted border that is damaged. I was thinking i could just tape off, lightly scuff with fine grit, and put a good opaque enamel or acrylic paint over that. To seal it all, im not sure if i should put a layer of shellac first so i can lightly scuff the whole thing before using a spray on clear acrylic topcoat or just go straight with the acrylic topcoat (im worried that without scuffing, the waterbased acrylic coat might not stick well to whatever the original finisb is. Lacquer?). Your thoughts on that would be really appreciated. Also, mine has pleated pink felt inside that's mostly intact but theres a small stain or two. What would you recommend that might lift the stain without damaging or altering the fabric color? Soft toothbrush with maybe like an oxy-compound for colors or something? Just warm water? (On felt? Feel like it needs to be some sort of dry cleaning agent). That being asked, beautiful job man. Please write back!

Hello thank you for the great video. I have a similar box with similar damage but also has oxidation or something going on with the mirrors. If you had to replace/repair the mirror under the lid how would you go about doing it?
Not a problem at all Ian thank you for watching. That sounds like a tough one. I would try prying it out with a thin palette knife. It’s probably glued on underneath though so I would recommend slowly heating it up and try softening the glue. If not id just remove the mirror entirely by breaking it into small pieces and replacing it. I would recommend trying to clean it first and see if that fixes the issue.
The mechanism was working without issues before the restoration, just a little dusty. The only thing that was missing was the wire stopper that starts the flywheel when you open the box to have the music play automatically. You can listen to the entire tune at 23:16.

My sister bought me another one similar, but my father brought my mom and I one home when he was in the military. I would love to have my original one fixed. (Due to the childhood memories). Where are you located?
Hi I loved the video!!! I have a box of the same type too but mine has a sort of laquer panel over where the hollow for the metal working that makes the music should be. Do you know how I can get it to come off?
Very much appreciated! ☺️ hmmmm I would try to pry it off with a very thin palette knife. You can use a piece of cloth under the knife to prevent damage. If it’s glued on you may want to try heating it up very carefully, and try gently prying it off. Sometimes damages are inevitable to repair or to gain access.
Thank you laurale! I’d use any type of unscented sensitive dishwashing liquid. I just used a cup of water and a dash of the soap to get rid of any oils and grime. Also make sure there are no drips as some parts of these boxes are made of paper. Keep an eye of the painted sections for any peeling or if the paint seems to be coming off 👍😺

I have one of these and can't seem to figure out the music function. The wind up key isn't working properly, it's really stiff and I can't seem to get it to wind. It keeps making noises on its own. I don't think the winding key is original but the rest seems to be.
I would suggest checking if there is any blockages in the gears, there may be a piece of dust or something similar blocking the turning motion so give it a good clean. You can buy replacement parts if the aftermarket winder seems to be the issue. Here is a link to some common replacement parts www.clockshop.com.au/music-boxes/music-box-parts/ Also check that the wire stopper isn’t obstructing the flywheel.

It's a great product, it dries quickly though so you have to be quick when painting. It's been pouring rain over here recently 🥲 I hope you and Stella are having a blast :) 😺🙂👍 See you next time buddy!

Here is a link to some common replacement parts www.clockshop.com.au/music-boxes/music-box-parts/
Also check that the wire stopper isn’t obstructing the flywheel.
Amazing!! Do you haveca working website? I have a similar musical jewelry box that was my mother's, which the movers damaged very similarly to this one. I've been having a bear of a time trying to find anyone who restores these.
My apologies for the delay! I’ve had to take down the website while I deal with some personal matters. You can send through any inquiries to jamie_bonnici@hotmail.com.
Cheers 👍
P.s. Do you know where they were made?
Thanks,
Bye
I believe they are made in Japan. Japan is quite well known for its lacquerware The music cylinder is also made in Japan.
Thank you again,
Bye bye now 👍🙂
It's beautiful but does the music box work now
It sure does Janice check out 23:04 of the video for the music demo. Cheers :)

Can you recommend anyone i Melbourne that does this? I have one that needs restoring. TIA restoration restoration
The only thing is missing is the tassels.
That’s a great observation, it would have been fun to make new tassels 👍🙂
I’m lucky. My mom’s box has all of the tassels still.
The rings on the inside lids had little tassels
Very interesting I would have had no clue. Thank you for sharing the info 👍🙂
How do you restore a box that is black and red???
How do I post a picture of it so you will see?
Hey Lyn, you can send me a picture to jamie_bonnici@hotmail.com
Happy to help if I can 👍🙂

Hi I wanted to try to contact you about restoring a Chinese Jewlry box I would sell it to you for $40 and you could restore it and sell it for much more. It is missing the doors and hinges and it is much larger than that one in this video.
