Antique Thonet No. 14 Chair Restoration and Refinish

  • The Thonet steam bentwood chairs were the first chairs to be mass-produced. This one still had all of the original square bolts and screws. This was mostly a refinish job. The owner wanted to see the original beechwood unstained.
    The paint was very difficult to remove and I'm not sure if it was factory paint as someone had worked on it before. It would be impossible to remove all of the stains, but it has a nice antique look about it now and the original beech wood is stunning. The pattern on the seat is also quite nice, a very well-made chair.
    Thanks for watching. Please let me know what you think or if you have any questions.

    Beautiful restoration, I agree with the owner that it was the right call to keep that gorgeous carved seat that replaced the original cane. The finished product was well worth the work it took to get there! Also Hans is such a gorgeous kitty, I adore is little ear fluffs. While I am sure he’s already gotten a bit of an ego please let him know that we think he’s just handsome here. With best wishes from me and my two kitties!

    My grandparents had a few of these chairs - all of them had those pressed/embossed seats, not sure if they were originally cane as I never checked! The blind stamp you couldn't make out was "THONET AUSTRIA".

      Very interesting, I wonder if the pressed seats were a factory replacement as the cane seat had a 5 year lifespan. Ahhhh i can read it now! Thank you that, it was really bugging me haha 👍🙂

    Hi there! Really impressive work, well done. Im currently doing similar chair but i think little bit older as on the label is written Ungvar wich i believe is the previous company. It has quite holes from woodworms but i think they're gone now (still one of the legs doesn't look good). Im not sure to treat it with something or not. Would you recommend that step? Thank you!

    • @ejwoodhouserestorations2796
      @ejwoodhouserestorations2796  11 місяців тому +1

      Hello! Thank you Radosveta. Very cool! I’m going to check that company out. For any type of tunnelling damage, I’d fill it with epoxy just to make sure the structural stability is maintained. As the leg may already be severely weakened. If your not sure the bugs are gone you can soak the leg in turpentine or methylated spirits for a day.

    Beautiful work. I'm trying to restore a similar Thonet chair and this was very helpful. Do you have any recommendations for a stain that would restore the wood to its original finish? Would the jarrah stain you used for the seat be a good option (and how did you dilute it)? Thank you!

    • @ejwoodhouserestorations2796
      @ejwoodhouserestorations2796  Рік тому +1

      Hey Jen, a Jarrah would definitely be similar and look great. Although it was quite dark I think a walnut may look more similar, you would have to do some testing. Be sure to sand at least up to 240grit, or else the stain will pool in deeper scratches. I diluted it with feast Watsons colour reducer, although you can just use mineral spirits it’s basically the same thing. With water based stain just dilute with water. Thank you for watching! 👍🙂

      @ejwoodhouserestorations2796  Рік тому +1

      Hello there, you certainly can. I used a satin oil based varnish. The exact product is Cabot’s oil based varnish, I think it’s only made in Australia, but you can use any brand. I diluted it by 10% which I would recommend with all varnishes. 👍🙂

      Hello, I am popping in to say that the long stemmed flowers on the seat looked like a stylized version of a Calla Lily, in the center towards the bottom I couldn’t make out if it was meant to be a bow or another flower. If it’s meant to be a flower then it looks like a dogwood blossom as they were quite common on mid century table linens. Fun fact both of those flowers can mean rebirth and resurrection, the Calla Lily can also mean faithfulness and beauty while dogwood blooms mean durability and reliability.

    This is definitely not an original Thonet No. 14 chair.
    Thonet never used visible screws on the braces from the seat frame to the backrest or on the back chair legs. The screws were always camouflaged and therefore invisible.
    This is a replica.
