One of the greatest minds of the 21st century. Gil Scott-Heron spoke when others dared to speak. His intelligence was unparalleled. A genius who was ahead of his time. I could listen to him and James Baldwin speak all day long.
@herryBrown Understand ? Overstated Civil Rights activist 20 year ago? You can’t do something that won’t be televised? Same for me…he performed at the Univ of Louisville in the seventies and we got to meet him after. He had a commanding presence and he really cared about his people.
Same for me,as a student at Howard University, I was invited to a party and Gil Scott-Heron was there, it was a memorable time.I'm 73 years old this year and I won't ever forget that , he was so far ahead of his time and anyone who doesn't get it just doesn't understand the depth of the man's mind and feelings, his spirit and his being able to see into the future. Listen to "Winter in America" today in the year 2024 and keep in mind he wrote that in the early 1970s.
As a teenager I admired his music and message. As a senior citizen watching this video I admire the foundation of his beliefs. Intelligence, education, perception and being real. Gill Scott Heron and his writing partner Brian Jackson are still revelevant in 2021. I love them more today because thier message of freedom , reality and hope is today's reality.
Powerful mind and lyrics........... Luckily energy follows thought and creates! It takes it, from inside to putting it outside in the world for others to see and hear and mull.............. At these times of the 'dodgy virus' 'The Revolution will not be televised' comes to mind..................... Whatever, Enjoy!
All of Gil’s works is prevalent and up to date no matter when it was written. The 1980 Album prepared us for the future while the prior albums assisted in clarifying the past and current times we were living in. Beautiful BROTHER👊🏿
All due respect, we must refrain from using the term, very articulate, whenever we here someone who is black speaking well. We must get used to the fact that, we don't need to be complimented for using the English language in the proper way, as if it's a rarity. It's not. Whites don't give each other that compliment, because they feel as though its a given, for them to speak well. We must feel the same way. They also said that Obama was very articulate. Which, I also resented, because they already have In their minds that we are less than they are.
Genius mind come along as a gift to 🌎 world... Logic is unreal.... Students and street can understand..Way ahead of time.I appreciate him more now than ever. The Creator blessed us with his music 🎶...I like R&B...and music for the soul...Gil Scott Heron was a Giant in our little house...The Messenger.
A true master and genius, I'm glad he cleared up the Last Poet argument, I've been a fan since Jr High and he's easily in my top 5 greatest artist of all time!
Wow so authentic, by reading you have the space to interpret, the young men interviewing were trying to get him to move to visual work but he was a master at spoken word....they were all on the right path just different perspectives....love it.
In an alternate universe this man is regarded as a singular talent and one of the most important musicians of his time. I live in that alternate universe.
No , one of the most important people to live if the counicusness was god which it should be and no ego consumerisam this guy would be emperor of happy anarchialand
I came here because shock g from digital underground had passed and they was showing him playing the piano I said how he was conducting himself just his mannerisms put me in the mindset of Gil Scott heron.
Yeah, but he cut off Gil's responses repeatedly and misrepresented Gil's comment on The Last Poets, likely because he was too busy readying the next question.
A study in ironic contrasts. A victim of his own worst enemy...him. Guess there is such a thing as being too smart for your own good; such a waste of talent and potential.
Call me crazy if you like, or hate what I am about to write ✍️, but I'm going to write it anyway. GIL Scott Heron, favors Abraham Lincoln, more than alot! Shit, let me be the first to ask, we're they distant relatives. I'm just saying. Simply, Larry
He mentions The Last Poets and Temple University at 2:35, not sure where tRump came in... tRump had racist policies in his buildings, I doubt Gil was much of a tRump guy. If Gil knew who tRump even was at the time of this interview, he'd only have known him as a racist landlord with a big mouth.

@Peter Kelner XD You have to get it, in order to get it! Understand?
@jerrylouiswiththethickness6403why not start by telling us what you find so incomprehensible about his intelligence in particular?
@herryBrown

Agreed good sir.
I’m 26 years old and feel extremely lucky to have came across and learn about this man online
Thankful that he had the courage to use his gift. So necessary.
What a great point it taking courage to use gifts
Gil did a concert my senior year of high school 1975! Had a great conversation after the show👍 Rest in Peace brother Gil I will never forget you

@@kitsmith806The Train from Washington (1980) is so relevant today as is The H20 Gate Blues (70s) just update the culprits ✌️

Imagine sitting in a convo with Gil and Bob Marley - amazing
He was so in tune with humanity, down to earth, brilliant and a lovely person! Thank you for sharing.
What a brilliant & talented man, and what a poignant & prophetic thing he said "very few of us get to be 65".
A beautiful mind that advocated for Black and poor people with powerful words and music. Rise In Power Gil Scott Heron!
All of Gil’s works is prevalent and up to date no matter when it was written. The 1980 Album prepared us for the future while the prior albums assisted in clarifying the past and current times we were living in. Beautiful BROTHER👊🏿
Very sharp brother articulated himself very well!

Wow so authentic, by reading you have the space to interpret, the young men interviewing were trying to get him to move to visual work but he was a master at spoken word....they were all on the right path just different perspectives....love it.
One of the coolest dudes to have ever lived, imo!
“Somebody can get over you on the street & you won’t be able to get your bread back....but you ain’t gotta be quiet about it” - a true real G

I came here because shock g from digital underground had passed and they was showing him playing the piano I said how he was conducting himself just his mannerisms put me in the mindset of Gil Scott heron.

This Man spoke the Truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
Powerful!
A legend, enough said!.
Thankyou
This is a must see,the interviewer was cool and conscious as Mr. Heron.
The 70's!
Yeah, but he cut off Gil's responses repeatedly and misrepresented Gil's comment on The Last Poets, likely because he was too busy readying the next question.
His intelligence had them speechless lol in a land full of water the fool is thirsty! " bob marley".
"It's theater of the absurd ... (why) act serious about something that's so ridiculous." That's brlliant!
A true prophet in the flesh, thank you for the light you've shed upon us.
He should have run for president
Reminds me of President Barack Obama.
A study in ironic contrasts. A victim of his own worst enemy...him. Guess there is such a thing as being too smart for your own good; such a waste of talent and potential.
Rip Prophet.
Starting off by asking Gil-Scott Heron what his favorite TV show is gives an impression of what kind of interview this will be
Master Teacher!
I swear... if the rapper Common does not play this man in a movie I'm going to have a fit!
I totally agree
Definitely a singular American visionary filled with purposeful talent.
The CC translation was wrong he was referring to Jean Toomer, the writer....
I always wanted to see a corroboration of sorts with Gil and Muhammed Ali. Intelligence and toughness. And that applies to both equally.
they must have gave this interviewer the assignment to interview Gil Scott-Heron the night before the interview..
Principle is more important! -GSH
Great interview this is REAL SHIT....LISTEN😜
Just for clarification I believe the writer Gil mentions briefly is Jean Toomer.
14:29 i love this interviewer 😂
Love him !
He is so handsome and he managed to have that figure all his life.
It's easy to stay thin when you're a drug addict.
I’m friends with Brian and Gil wrote to me from prison.
Goat
smart bro so damn handsome
Reminds me of President Barack Obama. The same king of swagger.
This video was uploaded to UA-cam about a year ago, but does anyone know the date of the original interview in this video took place?
Looks like circa 1980, but I'm wondering about the exact date myself
2:00 damn that was rude as fuck for the interviewer to cut him off like that
Babylon.... the Babylon.... great question!
I could not understand all what he said ,it's obvious he went to education as a help to his ideals which he shared eloquently. RIP
Anyone know what year this was?
He will be turning in his grave seeing how the world has become
America’s cool/underpaid history professor.
👉 what a dude 🙏 8:15 rings so true 😔
What year is this?
Early eighties would be my guess. He gets asked about the decade

Esta canción tiene mucho tiempo, pero cada vez que la escucho me transmite naturaleza y puedes escuchar cuando quieras.
Back when education meant something

2:35 his views are a lot like Trump's and he mentions Trump here. Interesting
He mentions The Last Poets and Temple University at 2:35, not sure where tRump came in...
