Romania's Plan to Create "The Yellowstone of Europe"

- In the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, a plan is underway to create "The Yellowstone of Europe." Home to the continent's last primeval, old growth forests, and it's largest concentrations of Eurasian lynx, wolves, and bears, this landscape is beautiful, but troubled. Decades of logging, both legal and illegal, have haunted these ancient forests, threatening to destroy one of the last bastions of wilderness in Europe. But hope can now be found in the proposed Fagaras Mountains National Park, with it's aim to not only protect the forests, but serve as a model for locally beneficial conservation projects in the Carpathians.

Old growth forest doesn't grow overnight, bravo Romania.
👏👏👏
Intriguing topic🤔I vaguely heard about this project, so glad your covering it so well😄👏
It's a really cool project - happy to cover it! Thanks for watching!
Looks awesome! I'll need to put it on the list!
ATJ x NPD crossover in Romania???
Good Luck to all involved
Thank you! Thanks for all the research you put into this
Thanks for watching!
Romania is beautiful! I'm glad they are making efforts to preserve it.
Same here!
Dude, you are bringing us all together on this.
❤🙏🤘
Thanks for your video! I hadn't seen the first part, but im going now. Have a lovely week
I hope you enjoy it!
I really hope they do this smart and manage this resource. 😊
Same! That's why I think the Forest of Immortal Stories is so important - it's an example, on a small scale, of what this effort is trying to achieve. And it's working!
Real wilderness in Europe is pretty scarce after a few thousand years of human civilisation. The middle ages saw the biggest change commence, when the forests that once covered much of Europe were cut down for construction of houses, of ships and for burning. That's what makes me so happy about the national parks in the US which had a chance to prevent that scenario and took it.
Initiatives like this in Romania are a rare opportunity in Europe, as is the Białowieża forest in Poland, which is also old-growth forest. I hope that all of these places can become and remain national parks for the future. Although reforestation is increasing in Europe the past decades, those few original echoes of Europe's wild past will remain truly special.
I'm fascinated in the differences between European and American nature, as well as their different approaches to conservation. I have been hearing a lot about "rewilding" in Europe these last few years, which is great to see. And of course, protecting the remaining wildernesses is vital as well. Thanks for watching!
@@NationalParkDiaries Thank you for making these awesome videos :)
There's indeed a rewilding effort, including on an EU-level. Not without the usual struggles, such as when wolves and similar apex predators are reintroduced in areas where they were eradicated many decades or centuries ago. At least planting trees is mostly not controversial, fortunately.
Thank you for all the amazing content and this awesome video!!!
Thanks for watching, as always ❤
That was really interesting
Thanks for watching!
Romania looks so beautiful.. I really want to visit. I hope they protect the environment from fires
I'm hoping to visit at some point myself! Researching this video totally sold me!
Thank you for covering this information very worthwhile endeavor and I sent to my LinkedIn post and FB.
Thanks for watching and sharing, I appreciate the support!
Sounds awesome, I hope they succeed!!❤
Same!
so cool!!!
🙌🙌🙌
That's not Europe's last wilderness. Even in Central Europe there's still Białowieża in Poland.
Bruh, the Romanian forests are full of bears, wolves, lynx and so on, everyone knows it. I'm surprised you're not aware of it.
@Zdamaneta they didn't say it wasn't, lol. What a strange response to that.
And yeah, the Bialowieza forest of Poland and Belarus is definitely a huge wilderness area in Europe. Plenty of old growth forest is still intact, there are large populations of large mammals, including wolves, lynx, and the largest wild population of European bison.
@@adamhess7788 nice but you can't compare it with the foresty Carpathian mountains full of fauna. You feel me?
@Zdamaneta you can, cause it's also full of fauna. And it's still a huge wilderness area in Europe. Point is, there's more than one wilderness left in Europe.
@@adamhess7788 it's not huge. If you want to see huge wilderness you look at the Romanian Carpathians, that's why they make videos about it, it's impressive to still have something like this in Europe.
I love the idea, but not knowing anything about the Romanian government, I only am concerned what they think of it and how the envision the end result. I fear that they could take advantage of the situation and through corruption the land would end up suffering. It will be a big challenge for sure, but sincerely hope it will come together in a good way.
The thing that's different about this effort is its actually being led by a non-profit. They do have plans to return it to the public domain eventually, but they seem to be committed to doing it right, by involving the local communities and building sustainable long-term policies. It's an approach to conservation I'm especially fond of and I hope it works out in the long run.
Looks like a place of, or in, fairytales
Is the goal to preserve the ecosystem?
Yes! While also supporting the local communities that live there
@@NationalParkDiaries I appreciate the your energy, drive and commitment. . . .and use of rule 62
Bison in Europe?!!🤔
Yes! European Bison are being reintroduced to areas they have historically occupied!
your videos are really good and i think if you asked chatgpt to slim down the script by 20% these videos would soar 🦅
Sorry to be blunt, but that's not going to happen. I write my scripts specifically to tell the story as I believe it needs to be told, however short or long that may be. My channel will succeed or fail, but it will do so by my own hand, not chatgpt's.
thanks for bringing attention to this great initiative
I'd love to hear your take on the Black Forest National Park in Germany (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Forest_National_Park) since it's basically trying to protect a landscape that's already been and still is influenced by humans for centuries which leads to quite some discussion and conflicts, pretty similar to what might happen down the road in Fagaras
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind!
Thanks for all your work!
