  • This is the original recording of Oliver's top hit "Jean" recorded in 1969. This song was released on his premiere album along with "Good Morning Starshine" and created a double smash hit for the young Bill Swofford - and made many beautiful memories for so many people.
The song was the theme to the 1969 film adaptation of Dame Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which starred noted British film actress Maggie Smith. Smith won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the lead character in the film, Jean Brodie. The song was performed by songwriter McKuen, who was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Original Song. Although released as a single in the summer of 1969, McKuen's version of the song failed to reach the American music charts." [and that] " . . . "Jean" was also recorded by the American singer Oliver. Earlier in 1969, Oliver had reached #3 on the Billboard pop and easy listening charts with his version of "Good Morning Starshine," a song from the musical Hair.
While working on an album with producer Bob Crewe (which would also be called Good Morning Starshine), "Jean" was selected as a song for the record and subsequently chosen as the follow-up single. It became another hit for the singer, reaching #2 on the pop chart, where Sugar, Sugar by The Archies kept it from #1.[2] "Jean" spent four weeks at #1 on the adult contemporary chart. Oliver would later describe his cover version of the song: "We had no idea it would be a single. It was a 3/4 ballad in the psychedelic era...it was a beautiful arrangement."[3]

I had my first arms around the neck slow dance with a girl named Jean in the 8th grade back in 1968 and needless to say, it was quite a thrill for an emerging adolescent. Years later at our 40th class reunion I sadly learned she had passed away from breast cancer. But, I will forever remember her as “young and alive” and cherish the memory of that dance. Rest In Peace Jean. Love, J.

My dad died in 1969, when I was 3. The same year this song was released. For my Mother, it became a song of sadness and also hope, concerning our loss. I can remember everyone being upset when he died in 69, even though I was only 3. And I have 2 vivid memories of my Father and me.
My Mom died in 2004. This song means even more to me, than ever.
    Peace to all.

Lost my oldest son on 9-4-19 just 3 days before his 54th birthday and his death is still an open homicide investigation…he was a CPA and owned his own accounting firm in Allen, Tex. and the woman they are still investigating is the woman to whom he was married to for 20 months at the time. I wish your wife was still here and my son’s was the one who was gone. The last 2. 1/2 yrs. have been hard, horrible and very sad. I miss my son so much…and that woman has not called me…not one single time to say she is sorry my sweet son is gone…not one time. I am so sorry for your loss…it is just not fair.

This song was written, words and music, by Rod Mckuen, who was the most popular poet in America in the 60's and 70"s, but who always considered himself a songwriter first. And you must admit, with this one he hit the grand slam homerun in the last inning of the World Series. This song stacks up to "Yesterday" or "Your Song" with its poignant beauty. A masterpiece.

My mothers name was Jean. It is my middle name. My mother took me into a piano bar once, in the early 70’s when I was around three years old or so. I remember the pianist started playing this song when he saw her.
My mother was a very sad, lonely and abused person. She left our family shortly after that memory. I met her again when I was 15. I was never treated like a daughter, but she doted on my four older sisters. I had to be in foster care. I don’t know what to think of this song… it should be pretty… I’m not sure.

So after I thought the song ended, I tried to back out of you tube, but next thing we know.... HIS VIDEO IS PLAYING ON THE BIG SCREEN TV AT THE BAR... no sound, but video..... Absolutely pure magic voice song everything about Olivers voice is memorable, I totally agree with the person who said no gimmics gyrating bodies ,skimmy clothes. Just talent I remember, listening to the radio, early one morning, I was a new 20yr old Mother, cuddling my beautiful Son Shaun, and listening to Oliver singing Good Morning star shine, I ❤ this song, thanks Oliver you were and still are a star. 🎉

To me this is the most Beautiful Love Song ever written and Sung! After hearing it once or twice I knew every Word!
I only fell in love once, every time I hear this song, I see us in long, long, long kisses,we are at the drive in or sitting in my car talking, how I loved Her, Still Do.

We are all here on earth to tell the truth.
    Because the whole world lies.
    Our mission.
    This song tells the truth.
    A universal truth.
    Love.

I dedicate this song to Mrs Jean Morgan who was my first teacher at South Bargoed infant school. Every now and then I would see her in Bargoed Town and we'd talk. Sadly Jean Morgan died on the 6th of June this year (2021) aged 90. Always think of her when I hear this song. RIP Jean Morgan.
