    I have learned a 1,000+ things from you so I will share one of mine. The cure for pink eye (film over the eye) is very easy to treat, don't use a needle but flush out their eye with LA200; then give them a large booster shot of LA200; they are good-to-go with no patch or followup. I started doing this after an old timer shared it with me. I am now 77 and live near Athens in East Texas on 20 acres but had ranches in the Hill Country and Central Texas up to 2007.
    When I was 15/16 I worked on ranches in New Mexico as a Prairie Dogger I tied the rains together and dropped them over the horn; used my legs and body to give directions while it kept both hands free to work. There were four of us who in early spring would break/break-in around 12 horses in the morning and ride them to work in the afternoon.We rode sunup to sundown and changed horses around noon. Even today when I get on a horse I am in work mode and not riding for fun however developing a working relationship with your horse is part of the job which is also rewarding to both. Most of us treated the horses about the same so as we went from horse to horse and ranch to ranch things worked out. There was one older horse that was proud cut with a big stocky neck would brace up when you mounted and everyone knew first ride would be rodeo time with all four feet off the ground. I passed but I think some of the guys just like the ride and the feel of the power.

    The way we do in the head catch is put penacilin just under the thin skin of the white part of the eye and above the iris. Then it slowly releases into the eye for days. It works wonders but you cant do that in the field unless you can keep their head still. I like this guy though. He's the real deal.

    How long does the patch stay on?
    Do you catch and remove the patch?
    What are you using to treat the eye?
    Great video! I use some of the same techniques when doctoring but always looking to improve.
    Cheers from Canada.

      The patch wears off right about the time that the cow doesn’t need it any more. Pat used a medicine for mastitis called Today. Just a little bit in the eye has the same results that we used to get with injecting the eye with penicillin. And it’s a lot easier to do!

  • @darinhoyt9851

    Nice video I would like to know the product you are using on the eye. I like the idea of the patch We are also out in middle of big country and we use cat gut and la-200 stitches decay and fall out about a week usually cleared up. (North Dakota)

    What keeps the cows eye from not rubbing on the inside of the patch

    • @PatnDebPuckett

      She is able to close her eye and blink. But no light, flies, or dirt will aggravate the eye.

    What was used for the patch. It looked like denim. And why burlap for wiping?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  6 років тому +7

      The patch is made of old denim which is soft enough to not be an irritant. The burlap is rough so it removes any caked on dirt and debris. Thanks for the questions!

    Put the glue on cow first then tent patch

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  5 років тому +4

      We find it works better for us to put the glue on the patch. This ensures that the edges of the patch are glued down so it’s more likely to stay on. If a cow starts rubbing a patch with the edge sticking out, she can often peel it right off. We do make sure there’s a little bubble in the patch so it’s not scratching the cow’s eye.
