I really like the way this lady presents her instructions! She is to the point and doesn't add any unnecessary information. I will be rolling her more.
For all of those curious about the virucide solution she is soaking the roots in around the 4:20 mark, another viewer pointed out that you see a bottle (4:40 mark or so) in the background that looks like a Physan 20 bottle (8 oz) with a mostly yellow label with the Physan name in a teal oval. I think she purposely edited out the brand name and in so doing you can barely make out "virucide". Also note that the dipping / soaking sequence is an insertion of the dipping of a different plant since the root ball is tight and not pulled apart as it is in the rest of the video. Hope this helps.
My mother was an orchid master, she won Soooooooo many ribbons, but I never asked her the mix recipe for Phalenopsis's and I rescued 9 from Lowe's for $3.00 each, they were $20.00 and they need repotting but you also taught me more than I ever knew about my favorite orchid, my mom liked Vanda's and Cattalea's and most Dendrobian's...Thank You...❤
I just watched videos for at least 2 hours. This was the BEST by far! Simple, concise explanations, not a lot of unnecessary talking & one that finally showed me the right medium to use when replanting. Much appreciated, thank you!!
Fantastic video. So many videos explain here's a pot, get some bark, and change out. This one went way beyond that, and it's super helpful. I'd love for a series on the orchids! How to water, how to administer any needed TLC (a common need for orchid newbies who have either over/under-watered), and how to "grow" baby orchids!
i just bought a little orchid from the grocery store & was curious how to keep this thing alive .... little did i know what a rabbit hole i just jumped down!! this video was incredibly informative! thanks so much!
I visited the Chicago Botanic Garden when I was 8 years old. Now I am a 23 year old biology student who recently inherited a Phalaenopsis. So glad to be receiving this helpful advice from an organization which nurtured by interest in the natural world at such a young age. Thank you so much!
Thank you for making this video. I'm the worse green thumb ever but I got an Orchid plant after my ACL surgery and it now has sentimental meaning to me. You're instructions were clear and precise on what my next steps are and were very helpful.
This was very helpful thank you! My Ikea orchid (I called him Steve) was rotting in the pot, so I carefully removed the sphagnum as you described, and put it out in the sun to dry out. The ultraviolet part of the spectrum in sunlight breaks down the DNA and RNA of bacteria and viruses and the heat kills fungus so this should have done the same job as the viricide, at least that's my theory! I live in Sydney, Australia where the sunlight isn't filtered very well by the depleted ozone layer so I think it should have worked pretty well. I also gathered some bark and sticks from the woodland around me and smashed them up with a hammer instead of buying woodchips, then put them out in the sun as well. I don't like to buy stuff really, not only for the financial aspect but also because of the wastefulness of the commercial process. Steve is looking beautiful in his new home and seems very happy so far. I gave him a name because plants are demonstrably more successful if you love them - and they also enjoy classical music! I tell him every morning how lovely he is, only quietly tho because other people might think I'm batty lol...
All my plants are named as well ... thanks for the drying out tips ... I can do on my windowsill. I have woodchips outside ... but I'm not liking them ... have some tho that will work ... I thank them for living and hanging out with me ... I NEED them !!! I'm in San Jose, California ....
Amazing lesson on repotting my orchids! I have two now, one is in full bloom. I think I’ll wait on that one and repot my other one now. Thank you for such an informative video.
This was exactly the video I've been searching for!!! Very informative. This is the first video I've seen that gloves were used--and now I know "why" None of the videos have shown velamen, explained about pathogens or mentioned the spikes on sphagnum moss. Thanks so very much!
yeah I'm also a scientist. There is very harmful stuff growing in the soil sometimes, like botulism and all sorts of fungi and what not. But all the top experts that showed me how to garden ie. the guys on Gardening Australia and the UK one Gardeners' World, never wear gloves so I never wear gloves. You can't respect people who wear gloves, afraid to get their hands dirty. If Monty Don is willing to shove his hands into soil and prune roses with his bare hands then I'm willing to as well.
Thanks for your help. I'm a 1st timer w/a plant that was neglected. I'll be transplanting it tomorrow. Your tutorial was very informative. THANKS again.
In your video you show a different orchid (0.22/9:42) than the one you are going to repot. I was so happy to see the first orchid because so many orchids I buy are so compact and I do not know how to get the old medium out without breaking the roots. Could you make a video specific to this problem. I enjoyed you video and all the information you provided. Thank you.
Ms Amneese ( sp?) You rock, your detailed instructions is what an old island gal needed. I've killed several orchids in the past so I quit buying. My daughter gave me one on Mother's day & I almost killed it too. After hours of videos I found yours, so simple & precise I got it the 2nd time. My orchids ( there were 2 squished in the pot) are happy campers.
I hope you are well compensated for your knowledge and pitching the Illinois Botanical Garden. If I ever make it to Chicago a visit to the Garden will be no.1 on my list.
Very good explanation of repotting especially the root care. It is totally new for me. In Norway, orchids are sold in transparent pots and only bark is used. Thanks once again. Stay blessed and beautiful.
I think you should also make holes in the sides of the plastic pot to help with ventilation around the roots, not just in the bottom of pot. You can make holes using any tool which can be heated over a flame and make the holes. Never cut a stem below the notches. Some do, but for future flowering and growth don’t. Spray everything you cut with H2O2 or apply cinnamon to cut roots, stems to disinfect. Also, It’s helpful to put a draining medium such as marbles, or hydroponic clay pebbles over the bottom of pot before placing plant in it.
Thank you for opening with the reason for wearing gloves. I have watched many similar videos with no indication of why we should wear gloves even though it is a question in the back of my mind. I appreciate the clear, easy to follow manner of your teaching. Best wishes on your continued success.
Wow this was so helpful. I bought an orchid from Aldi a while back. its bloomed for me twice its actually growing and looking very happy but I'm realizing I need to care for it differently and probably repot. Thank you for educating me so clearly, this video answered a lot of questions that I had.
Thank you for this in-depth video! I was able to go to my local greenhouse and get all the proper supplies and successfully repotted my orchids so QUICKLY. This helped so much.
Thank you so much for the great video! I am a novice when it comes to orchids and just purchased my first one. I just repotted my plant with your help.
I would like to thank you for such an extensive, helpful, clear explanation regarding how to take care of the orchids ... Been watching other videos, but none as instructive as yours ... Thanks again & hope to get more of your news pertaining other plants ...
Excellent information! I am am a novice orchid grower and ma going to be repotting my 2 orchid plants next week with media that has larger pieces of bark. This video helped me with my planning on what to use and how to do it. Thanks for posting! Much appreciated.
One video showed the grey roots outside the pot & when spritzed or wet they turn green & bring water to the plant. Amazing to see it work so quickly. Don’t cut them off, the plant grows lots of them when it needs water. This lady has good info.
After I clean the roots - I keep some orchids in tall water vases (filter water) - dont let water touch the leaves. Easy care - just change water when need it . Bloom all flowers in May.
Thanks! Very helpful. I repotted two of my phalaenopsis orchids using this technique. I didn't have virucide, so I soaked the roots in a solution of cinnamon and water. Cinnamon is a fungicide. Thanks again!
This was not only a very beautiful presentation it was very informational. Sitting outside of a big box store with my new Mini Orchid; bringing it home to give it much love. Thank you
Thank you so much my last orchids died because I couldn't find good information on them and it broke my heart now I know what yhe best potting material is and how to properly care for my orchids
Just the information I needed to re-pot my first orchid, a gift from my godfather when he was last in town. This made it especially important to do it right. Thanks!
I really appreciate your video, thank you very much. Having a rough percentage of your soil mix would have been great, but I can wing it. I saw your dip for the roots was done with Physan 20.
Thank you so much for this information on repotting an orchid. I have to repot one that my wife left in its original container much too long, and the plant is definitely sick now.
The most well explained video without any unwanted wastage of explaination. Surely subscribing to learn more. What was the solution used to clean the roots.
I really like the way this lady presents her instructions! She is to the point and doesn't add any unnecessary information. I will be rolling her more.
Beautiful. Pretty good explanation. Thank you
Totally agree...precise and to the point! Need to watch again about the potting ratios.
Agreed. She is awesome!
O 0:35 one 1:24 1:25 1:25
what was the solution it soaked in.
I repotted mine according to these instructions, without soaking though … and it’s grown a new flower stem, in the middle of winter 🎉
Cold nights/dropping temps are the seasonal "hint" for orchids to send up new flower spikes, so winter is great time to get them to send up a spike!
This is the best video I have seen showing details on proper repotting ❤😊and loving care for orchids.

I just could not hear what os the solution made of. The audio is a bit low. Great explanation besides that.
i just bought a little orchid from the grocery store & was curious how to keep this thing alive .... little did i know what a rabbit hole i just jumped down!! this video was incredibly informative! thanks so much!
Excellent, no wasted using-up-time commentary, everything very useful - thankyou!

Wonderful and helpful. The beauty of orchids is longevity. They last for years with the right care.
This is the best orchid potting video that I have watched. Thanks

So how's Steve doing these days? Did the sunlight work? Thanks in advance for your input. Cheers!

Angela Siegfried that’s sad. 😏
Amazing lesson on repotting my orchids! I have two now, one is in full bloom. I think I’ll wait on that one and repot my other one now. Thank you for such an informative video.
This was fascinating. You're like a plant doctor/surgeon.
She's good. It's so hard to find basic info like this and she made it simple to understand!
Thank you for a well-produced video. Should be used as a "case study" for any one who think they can throw any crappy video on UA-cam. Excellent job.
Brilliant! I now feel confident enough to repot my orchid
This was very helpful! I loved your explanations about the roots and their covering. I had never heard that before. Thank you!
Very clear instructions. Can see where we made mistakes when reporting last spring
thank you! I was gifted orchids and this really helped me know how to care for them.
thank you SO MUCH! I have a knack for killing mine with root rot so it was time to learn, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
In the UK Orchids are sold in bark chippings so tend not have problems with roots rotting and come in clear pots.
Kudos to the lady her pretension was to the point, informative and was great to listen to.

Your video was very informative. I'm glad people like you are there to help us who need information. Thank you

Repotting my ten year old orchid tonight this video really helped.

Thank you for so much information 😊because I received one for Mother's Day. Didn't know much about them. You rock!
Great instructions! can tell she really knows her orchids!!!
Thank you for explaining how to repot an orchid...I am new to the Orchid world and wanted to make sure I am getting the right method to archive it.
This is a really excellent video--clear, concise, and informative. Thank you so much.
I couldn't hear the contents of the solution they are soaked in.
How can I make the solution you soaked the roots in?

what an awesome video...perfectly paced and chock full of useful information!
Thank you for your very clear direction. I've learned so much and ready to apply it to my collection.
Paul Lyons cinnamon also is a desiccant. It dries things out. Should be used on wounds /cuts only not entire root system
Thank you for that information about cinnamon!!
Amazing job and thanks for educating me ! New orchid plant owner here.
Great video! First hit and told me exactly what I needed to know. Well presented 👍🏼
This was not only a very beautiful presentation it was very informational. Sitting outside of a big box store with my new Mini Orchid; bringing it home to give it much love. Thank you

Excellent video! Super informative!
This was really informative and totally with Maria. Hope to see more soon.

Great informative video. You get right to the points, without a bunch of non informative blather. Thank you!
The most well explained video without any unwanted wastage of explaination. Surely subscribing to learn more. What was the solution used to clean the roots.
Hi! Can you provide a link of the liquid and potting mix please?
Great instructional video. Best I have seen!
About to repot my very first Phalaenopsis (first orchid ever actually). Thanks for the info!
