How to Repot an Orchid: Phalaenopsis

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 18 сер 2024
  • A Phalaenopsis, or moth orchid, is called the "gateway orchid" for beginning collectors: it requires very little care, and yields great rewards with blooms that last up to three months! Early success with a moth orchid leads growers to try other species and, finally, to orchid addiction. But how do you ensure early success? Visit my.chicagobotan... for more information on how to repot an orchid.

what was the solution it soaked in.

  • @dadssueaside
    @dadssueaside 4 місяці тому +5

For all of those curious about the virucide solution she is soaking the roots in around the 4:20 mark, another viewer pointed out that you see a bottle (4:40 mark or so) in the background that looks like a Physan 20 bottle (8 oz) with a mostly yellow label with the Physan name in a teal oval. I think she purposely edited out the brand name and in so doing you can barely make out "virucide". Also note that the dipping / soaking sequence is an insertion of the dipping of a different plant since the root ball is tight and not pulled apart as it is in the rest of the video. Hope this helps.

My mother was an orchid master, she won Soooooooo many ribbons, but I never asked her the mix recipe for Phalenopsis's and I rescued 9 from Lowe's for $3.00 each, they were $20.00 and they need repotting but you also taught me more than I ever knew about my favorite orchid, my mom liked Vanda's and Cattalea's and most Dendrobian's...Thank You...❤

Fantastic video. So many videos explain here's a pot, get some bark, and change out. This one went way beyond that, and it's super helpful. I'd love for a series on the orchids! How to water, how to administer any needed TLC (a common need for orchid newbies who have either over/under-watered), and how to "grow" baby orchids!

This was very helpful thank you!
My Ikea orchid (I called him Steve) was rotting in the pot, so I carefully removed the sphagnum as you described, and put it out in the sun to dry out. The ultraviolet part of the spectrum in sunlight breaks down the DNA and RNA of bacteria and viruses and the heat kills fungus so this should have done the same job as the viricide, at least that's my theory! I live in Sydney, Australia where the sunlight isn't filtered very well by the depleted ozone layer so I think it should have worked pretty well.
I also gathered some bark and sticks from the woodland around me and smashed them up with a hammer instead of buying woodchips, then put them out in the sun as well. I don't like to buy stuff really, not only for the financial aspect but also because of the wastefulness of the commercial process.
Steve is looking beautiful in his new home and seems very happy so far. I gave him a name because plants are demonstrably more successful if you love them - and they also enjoy classical music!
I tell him every morning how lovely he is, only quietly tho because other people might think I'm batty lol...

I think you should also make holes in the sides of the plastic pot to help with ventilation around the roots, not just in the bottom of pot. You can make holes using any tool which can be heated over a flame and make the holes. Never cut a stem below the notches. Some do, but for future flowering and growth don’t. Spray everything you cut with H2O2 or apply cinnamon to cut roots, stems to disinfect. Also, It’s helpful to put a draining medium such as marbles, or hydroponic clay pebbles over the bottom of pot before placing plant in it.

yeah I'm also a scientist. There is very harmful stuff growing in the soil sometimes, like botulism and all sorts of fungi and what not. But all the top experts that showed me how to garden ie. the guys on Gardening Australia and the UK one Gardeners' World, never wear gloves so I never wear gloves. You can't respect people who wear gloves, afraid to get their hands dirty. If Monty Don is willing to shove his hands into soil and prune roses with his bare hands then I'm willing to as well.

Ok! Couple comments. Ideally, the pot must be more breathable with holes on the sides. Best to use a clear glass jar with holes drilled on sides so the air can circulate. Also when cutting off stems, cut above the last nodule, not below. That ensures that if any infection won't get through the cut into the core.

When you take away the stuff between the roots, are they not breaking? I’ve got one with only bark in the pot, do I need to use the same material? What’s the mix ratio of the solution? How do you get your orchid bigger? And all the other questions I wrote during the film are answered! 👍🏻 nice and easy and very informative clip!

@@patriciamartin9837 I could be wrong, but I've never seen "suckers" on an orchid. You could be seeing either new roots or a flower stem. Either way, it doesn't seem like something that should be cut off.
