    Absolutely ingenious ! Plumbers do the same thing with asbestos pads in the uk to stop the scorching the house plaster when installing radiators. It's the first time I have ever seen such an application adaptation to the wilderness style of living. Very, very clever bro. I'm out of superlatives. Thank you greatly for your innovations and thought.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  6 років тому

      Thanks Tony, I'm glad you liked it. They still use asbestos? I think its outlawed here and they now use fiberglass or ceramic fiber blankets. Thanks for watching

    • @nomad7412
      @nomad7412 6 років тому

      Hey bro. Yes and in the UK too, but it was mainly the blue asbestos that was used for lagging pipes in ships that was deadly. Then it was realised, that following the war,prefabricated houses were made and the material they used? Yes, asbestos. However they continued to use it for quite a few years and even to this day they are still demolishing garages which were made from it. Only a matter of 15 years or so ago, my son (born same year as you lol . think you said 1967 ) had his asbestos garage demolished. The thing about this material is that it is safe in it's fabricated state but did not have the foresight to see the danger would be when they had to be destroyed,along with the dumping of this ubiquitous material. It now costs a small fortune to have the asbestos dismantled and dumped in special dumps. Only specialised workers are allowed to dismantle into special bags. People are still dying from asbestosis in both Britain and Australia (where I now live). In fact only a couple of years ago, there was a huge compensation claim against a company which caused massive damage to peoples lungs etc. >sorry for the long winded explanation of what happened years ago and up to today with regard to asbestos. I love your videos and I'm slowly getting through them from 2011 I think. I keep searching for them in sequence but not easy lol .....Oh, I will check with my bro back home in the UK and my other who lives close by here who are both plumbers , to see if It is still used as a protection against damage to plasterboards etc. Looking forward to future vids. Peace bro

    'Tree Grilla' and the large work table are awesome. Maybe it is because I recognize the lid from the type of Farberware fry pan that I always loved in my kitchen. The Pivot Pot is one of your creations that I really like. That grill with the hot water griddle intrigues me! The hot water will really moderate the heat to do eggs, as well as to slowly bake pancakes as you suggest. I was wondering about having two resealable spouts--one would hold a scalable water reservoir that would feed more water into the tank as hot water was expelled into the coffee cup from the outlet. No risk of boiling dry...and more water for coffee. Without the pressure release you put in, pressure would really build up. Now I have to find a local custom metal fabricator... Anyway, this is a great gear video! Thanks for making the video and thanks for making the gear.

      Thanks James, I'm glad you liked it all. Brother you hit on a topic that Ive been thinking of for years but haven't come up with a design. I want a device that sits over a fire near a creek with an inlet laying in the creek. As water is boiled, the pressure builds, expels hot water and draws more in! I really want to build something like that. Thanks for watching

    Awesome series! ... Man, isn't it the truth -- cookware does tend to pile up over the years; I thank my Lucky Stars I don't weld...I would have stacked up more stuff! I'm experimenting with tin-can stoves now, but those are disposable. :) I use a form of your suspended bowl-cooker in my canoe w/charcoal...works like a charm, & I don't beach on long float trips anymore, to cook. Likewise, I made a simple form of the "tree grill", and it works great, too; ditto for the neat "table daisy", which I made from a bent small dia. rod, closed up with two hog rings, making it collapsible. Thanks for the ideas, Dave!

    Dave this is a difficult time for me and my family right now, but your videos are putting a smile back on my face! These two videos reminded me of all of your older videos. Now that is sheer joy!! I am so looking forward to some weld-less videos. I always am trying to figure out alternative ways to make this stuff. I was glad to see the machete grill cause it inspired me to make my own version of it. Thanks for everything you do my friend. For everyone that you inspire to venture into nature, make a little fire and cook something .... Even if nature is their own backyard... thank you! The best as always to you and your family from your California friend!

      I'm sad to hear your family but happy to hear the videos helped! Sadly, most things need to be welded but I do sometimes try to show things that others can make with bolts or rivets. Take care, stay safe and thanks for watching my friend!

    Howdy from Southeast Texas buddy! Good stuff.
    It's been years since I've camped and watching these have sparked an interest in going out and doing it right. My pack will be here in a week or so. I've got a place near a creek picked out and still have to buy some rope and a couple of things but I have the rest of my gear. Got an old Buck 102 Woodsman attached to my machete.
    I think my tarp's too big. It's a 10' x 20'. I'll make my raised pole bed and then make a Tee Pee over that. The excess will be folded under to make a partial floor to put my pack and guitar on.
    Sausage and beans for supper then banock (sp?), sausage and eggs for breakfast.
    I'm going to get some photos if you want to see a couple shots of my pole and rope bed and whatever I come up with for that huge tarp.

I do not know how to weld (would love to, though), and soldering is useless for this kind of stuff, but there is a whole lot that can be done just with cutting, bending, drilling, linking, and bolting together. And steel office document clips :-). I am building a smoker based upon your design Dave, thanks to your backpack smoker video :-). I use cast iron mostly, so whatever I build has to be very stable and able to handle the weight.

    6:53 If you didn't have two trees, you could drive two or four posts into the ground and put the bungee cords around them.
    I recognize the little "odd-looking little daisy-looking device." It was intended to be put on top of an electric stove burner so someone could them put a glass coffee pot or Corning Ware coffee pot on top of it; that would keep the glass from shattering. (I remember these from the 1950's and '60's.)
    Your "grills up off the ground" are ingenious! I can see you being the cook on a wagon train going out west or a tinker selling his inventions to settlers. Your innovations are genius. You are truly a unique individual. I agree with others--you should patent your creations; if you don't, it is possible that someone else will. I especially like your smoker and baking bowl.

    Wife and I just finished watching this and we both thank you once again for a super fantastic video. Don't worry, none of your videos are too long. I (and I bet a lot of your other subs) can spend all day watching and learning from them. These vids of you sharing what you have in your gear room are the best. Especially these last 2, they have 'spawned' many ideas in my mind on creating and building/fabricating a few grills/cook-sets of my own, one being a "base-camp oven type set-up. (As matter of fact, now that it is getting too cold up here in the '"New York Freezer" to work on the boat my sons and I are restoring, I just may start on it tomorrow). I noticed you mentioned that you make all of your cook-sets from stainless steel. Is this because of the heat resistance, safety, durability, cost or what? Reason I ask is, my idea might end up a little heavy if I use all stainless and may need an alternative metal. (Dude, you got the gears in my noodle a-turning time, lol!)!!!! Do you ever use or recommend using aluminum? How many sets didn't you show here? I bet a lot of em. My wife was wondering if you are gonna be doing any more actual cooking videos? She was a professional chef before switching her career choice to nursing and loved the ones ya did in the past. Once again, thank you for the time you put into the videos and keep up the great work. And as you would say.....We shall, see you in the next one!!! ~ Vinny

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  6 років тому

      Thanks Vin, I'm glad yall liked it. I use stainless mainly because its tough, long lasting, safe and much easier to weld. Most of my gear is backpacker style so the weight of stainless is no big deal. If yours will be base camp then weight wont matter? Aluminum is very lightweight but much much harder to weld smaller items. Yes, lots more cooking videos to come. We have just been under a fire ban all summer here. Take care and Thanks for watching

Question’s; where did u get the two cast irons, brand of/ and where u got ur pants (I love the color blend) also what do u think of stainless steel dog bowls for a cook set???? My Lord baby Jesus! That was a lot of cooking grills, bowls, bungy cords, oh he'll a lot of cooking stuff... lol... You crack me up David. I just love it! I would tottaly rock one of your grills if you ever want to pass one off. I like the grills that you place a bowl on one side & fry on the other side... hint, hint... I would come to Georgia & be your cameraman, since Nick can't keep up with you, on any adventures with David P, aka Really Big Monkey 1, just to be able to pick out 1 set up & you can decide which one to pay me with. I would think 3 videos would be alright for trade... lol...... keep me in mind. It's getting cooler & that would work perfect bc I hate the heat!! But we have to have some gator to eat & or shrimp & turf. We could make garlic butter in that small bowl to brush over the shrimp, but 1st we have to cook the stake just with butter then add the garlic later or hell we come just brush it all with garlic & butter. I would drink the sauce that's how well I like it. I put garlic power on my stake anyways so why not? Or have a crawl fish boil. Why not 3 videos of cooking with David in the woods with swamp bugs... lol... that's a good title right there. We could make it a 3 part video. Just let me know when & where & I'll be there & ready to film it with you. I hope I get in the credits, @ the end of our little mini video, that say video tapings by Chris from Missouri... lol.... Oh I'm so excited. Let's collaborate. I can be in Georgia in about 11 hours depending on traffic. Source Google Maps!!
    And I can stay for however long it takes to film 3 videos. Probably could even do it in 1 day to. I don't work so it's all up to you!

Now has to be a great time to get out in the woods down there in Georgia, so take a beak and get some fresh air before Nick has to get back to school... Thanks again for the video. BTW, I think it would be a neat idea to turn that water grill into a larger unit that can also double as a backpack rack. If you put a couple of loops into that tap, you could also use it to distill water in larger volumes ... I'll be thinking about this! Doc Tom

      Thanks Doc! I'm happy you liked it. Lol, those skull slippers accidentally "slipped" into that video. Lol. I'm putting more and more thought into some kind of distiller. Thanks for watching my friend

    Regarding 24:00. Use black binder clips to attach the carbon fiber to the v-grill as a wind shield. Since the binder clips are all metal they won't burn, but be careful when dismantling as they will get hot. The binder clips will survive a high temperature as we use them to hold the parchment or wax paper onto roasting pans... So paper won't fall in during roasting turkeys or baking brownies. Binder clips are also light weight. ❤🌅🌵

    Dave, Great video! On the big grill, instead on welding the bottom rods solid, have them hinged to fold up and
    fold down into welded lugs. (Hope that makes some sense to you?)
    How much water does the tube grill hold? Great design. Hope you build the coffee maker.

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Ive messed with hinges on these before but haven't perfected it. I need a good weldable hinge design. Tha grill holds about 1 quart. Thanks for watching

    Dave you are a genius and I know from past video you are somewhat a machinist. Those cook sets and tree tables are fantastic. I’ll try and Mcguiver something for the spring and summer from what I can gather around. You never cease to amaze me.
