Was salt or vinegar used?
You seriously have no clue how much this has helped me!! I need to make a rug and I want it to be purple but they didn't have any cute purple fur fabric to make my own so I was thinking how in the world could I make a purple fur rug? Just dye the white fur.. but how?? This helped so much and seriously saved me $300!! I just need to find a big pot
If the rug is too big you can dye it in your home washing machine... a couple important tricks to remember: 1) Turn up the temperature setting on your water heater the night before so you'll have lot's of "really" hot water ready for the process the next day! 2) Make sure to set the appropriate water level on the washer for the size rug you plan on doing, too little water and the fabric & dye won't circulate properly! 3) Make sure to use enough dye (more water requires more dye) especially when using the 1/2 or 3/4 water level settings (1-2 bottles = lighter colors/3-4+ bottles = darker colors). 4) Remember to turn down the heat setting on the water heater(!) 5) You remembered to turn down the heat on the water heater...right(?) :)
KITTY POOOOOL!!!!!!
@@bassafratzoh my goodness this is such a good idea… thank you thank you!!! Oh anddd…..thank you!!!🙏🏼 💚💙💜💛
Impressive amount of materials used
You just saved me the trouble of a bunch of expensive and time consuming experiments. I'm glad I found your channel, for this and the hand-sewing vids, and whatever else I will surely end up being pleasantly surprised to see a much-needed tutorial on.
We gottchu!
Thank you for giving another option to get the fabrics I need for my projects. You've saved many people time, grief & a lot of money. Once again thank you. All I have to do now is to buy a large pot and spoon with the dyes that I need and it's "GAME ON!.
This is the PERFECT video assistance for ANYONE new or old to learn about dying fabric!!!! EXCELLENT JOB! THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much. I've been wanting a dark green chair for ages but I'm not willing to pay 300 bucks for that😂 so now i can use the leftover seat cover if one of my living room chairs and dye it dark green. Yayyy. I was just concerned about it not being able to hold colour since it's 100% polyester, but after seeing your results, i must say I'm amazed. Thank you❤ and thanks from my bank account for saving me 300 dollars😂😂
WOW thank you for this video. I was wondering if dye would work and how it would look on various fabrics and you put it all in one video. This is going to be a game changer I wear a larger bra size and often have problems finding good bras in pretty colors now I can buy the white one and just make the Pretty colors myself brilliant. Thanks again
I've been looking for ways to dye faux fur but all I keep seeing is how to dye it with acrylic paint. This is really going to help for what I want to do and the color looked so good too.
the Rit dye can also be used to dye some types of leather a well. It just had to be a little thicker for that than to dye the cloth.
Thank you so much! I needed to see how different fabrics would absorb and you did it!
Well done. The conciseness & absence of annoyance drastically elevates the quality of your video.
so incredibly helpful. so convenient to see the different fabric results!
Glad it was helpful!
Wanted to see if a Thermometer was necessary, thank you for showing it wasn't.
A lot of you are asking questions that the Bottle of Dye will tell you: Rit DyeMore can be used on Polyester, Nylon, Acrylic, Acetate and Blends with Synthetics, (the Fabric should tell you it's composition) if it is a Fabric containing Cotton, Linen, Rayon or Rame, you will need Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative as well. The Fabric needs to stay in for at least 30min (specially if it has Polyester in it) up to 60min for one dying session. 1 Bottle can dye up to 2 Pounds of Fabric, if the Fabric contains Polyester you will need x2 the amount of Dye minimum, depending on the desired result.
I used the Graphite on a pair of Light Blue Sepeckled Leggings (Nylon 67%, Polyester 39% and Elastine 4%), and I now have a lovely pair of Dark Grey/Charcoal Speckled Leggings. I used half the bottle, as my leggings weigh 1/2 a pound and they contain Polyester, so not sure if a full bottle or another go around would get it truly Black, but I am quite happy with them not being a solid Black, some colour depth is nice.
thanks so much for this video. I have just purchased two bottles of this dye and can't wait to get started.
Best dye video ever.
Just the video I needed!!! Thnks so much. Now I can paint my white cotton/ polyester dress in light blue :)
Best of luck! You got this!!
Any loss of stretchiness in the polyester-spandex? I have read that heat destroys the spandex, but your sample looks undamaged... Thanks for posting such a comprehensive sample!
Hello! I am looking at possible dying a wedding dress (colored wedding dresses are hard to find!!), do you know anything about dying tulle? Thank you!
This is amazing thank you for all of these fabric tests and the easy tutorial!
Any tips for how to get a lilac/lavender 100% polyester?
Hahaha! If you took a shot for how many times you saw people replying with "now I gotta find a large pot", how drunk would you be?
Because this really helped a lot (hooray, halloween!) Now I gotta find a large pot for my velvet cape.
I have about 3 yards of fleece to dye. Don't think I'm going to find a pot big enough for that xD
Probably will just cut out the pieces first then dye.
Thank you sooooo much. I recently just went to a fabric store and they didn't have red faux fur, so I was only able to get white. Atleast now i know how to dye it 😅
I store gems in tiny plastic casings, but the stores don't have black foam, only green. So I'm dying them black, washing, then drying before I store them in the containers. I'll do testing afterwards to make sure they don't stain the stones or something.
Regardless, thank you.

Thank you so much! This video was so helpful and well done. Question, what was the polyester/spandex blend ratio? I am trying to dye leggings with 78% nylon + 22% spandex and wanted to know if 22% spandex is dyeable. Thank you!!
I feel brave now. Thanks
Thankyou for the video. I tried to dye a polyester dress red but it turned out peach red, wanted a red colour. I put 2 bottles of this dye, mixed for 40 minutes on the stove. Fabric weight 1.5 pounds. Shall I redeem again with 1 more bottle of dye or would you recommend another 2 bottles of the same red colour.
Great video and very enlightening as well. Good job.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! For the sunbrella, would you suggest using more dye for a darker color?
Use ether salt or vinegar to activate
Is it better to dye twice or dye once with twice as much dye for polyester?
I have a question. I’ve purchased a couple of bottles of RIT Dye so I can dye a couple of pairs of White Fruit Of The Loom Sweatpants and Sweatshirts. I purchased a couple of bottles of colors such as Purple, Lemon Yellow, and True Green. I’m wanting to know if the RIT Dye will actually work??? I also purchased a couple of bottles of RIT Dye Fixative to set the color. Now I keep being told I’ll need salt and dish soap when dying. I went on the RIT website for directions I NEVER seen where I’ll need dish soap and salt. Whenever I go to dye I’ll use 2 bottles of each Color just to make sure the sweatshirt and sweatpants get all around color. Also can I use RIT DYE on Fleece sweatshirt and sweatpants???
Hi , if I add a little black would it make it darker
I have a polyester dress I want to dye, but if it can't be washed on a temperature higher than 30C, how can I keep it in hot wanter for 30 min?
This video is _extremely_ helpful.. danke
I have a dress that seams to be in stretch mesh, would it shrink if i dye it in hot water? :)
Can you mix white dye with a darker dye such as this to get a lighter shade of the colour?
Please help! My senior photos are less then 2 days away and my school changed dress code for the photos. I already bought my dress and I need to dye it black. Will the synthetic dye work on 96% polyester and 4% spandex white dress?
Yes! It should work! Best of luck!
did your dress become super black after? I have a dress that is of the same percentage as the materials you have mentioned and I was wondering if I could get mine into a nice deep shade of black
Thank you for making this video! Does the dying cause soft fabric to feel rougher and/or more rigid?
Awesome, thanks very much. This was very helpful.
Can I also dye a cloth that is not white, for example green?
Do you think a 10 L pot is big enough for a dress? Im sad because all my pots are too small and ive been looking at a cheap 10L pot and hope it will be enough. I dont wanna buy again an other pot to find out its too small! This shouldve been a cheap diy project and now i have to spend so much in it😅 but i wanna finish it
Thank You, Very helpful!!
So do it need to stay on the heat while dying or can I move it because I don’t have a pot large enough for what I want to dye
I work in a supermarket bakery and I work for a company that’s got identical aprons to my previous job except for the colour. My old ones are a medium grey colour and my new ones are black. I wanted to make use of two brand new ones I had from my old job by dying them black as I don’t have enough aprons and have to keep washing them constantly. The label says 65% polyester and 35% cotton. Will I be able to dye these at home?
What about Crypton fabric? Can I de-performance a fabric by washing it a certain way or adding something like vinegar? I purchased a not inexpensive slipcovered swivel armchair chair that’s supposed to match the off-white sofa we ordered from the same place but the chair fabric is bright white and the company is giving me the runaround. To have a new slipcover made is 1/2 the price of the chair. I was all set to start experimenting with Lady Gray tea and two RIT dye combinations (Sweet Cornsilk and Ashton at the Opry) on some similar fabric scrap pieces and then I read performance fabrics can’t be dyed. 😩 Advice please?
I have 67-28-5 (rayon, polyamide, spandex) white pants I want to dye purple. would that be safe to dye? also would it be damaged by the hot/boiling water for dyeing?
So I used 2 black iDyes on a 100% polyester cloak that was forest green and it came out brown. I also used a large pot on an electric burner but also didn’t boil.
I want to make my cloak black. What do you recommend for me to achieve that? I still have 2 more iDyes packets.
could you please do a full tutorial from washing to drying with faux fur of a larger quantity, it'd be extremely helpful
Different faux fur will react differently so it's best to test out the process on a smaller piece first. A lot of faux fur is dry clean only so soaking in hot water may cause it to shrink and the softness and texture may change. This was true for the piece we tested. That doesn't mean you can't do it, but you really need to test it first. We have more complete results at the bottom of our written instructions here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/rit-dyemore-synthetic-fiber-dye/
Hi please help asap I need to dye a 95% polyester 5% spandex white bandage dress to a blue or black even. Do you think it’ll be ruined by dying or even take the color?
Does it dye the sequins too or just the fabric they're attached too?
Thank you this is so helpful!!!
Can you dye navy blue chiffon and spandex to black? Or is it better to dye white to black?
Do you still use a sealant afterwards for the synthetic dye?
No, you don't have to use the sealant for the synthetic, it will not do anything with that material.
Hi. Is polyester spandex the same as polyurethane fabric?
Hello, I want to buy the Rit DyeMore in Graphite. How can I dye my carpet that is stuck to the floor? Do I have to heat up the dye still and can brush over carpet? Thank you
Honestly, I don't really recommend it. There is no good way to get the material hot enough for long enough for this type of dye to work . If you are going to go ahead with it, I would probably apply the dye, and put something (like tin foil or plastic wrap) over the dye and heat it with an iron or a hair dryer. Good luck!
For a 65% polyester and 35% cotton maxi dress that’s super super light tint purple how long do I leave it in the synthetic purple rit dye to get it like a lilac purple
Excellent video! Thank you
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Hi just wanted to know is this dye ok to go in chlorine? Thanks
Does this wash off over time if it’s nylon spandex fabric with the holes in it
But what color were you trying to dye it to?
Did I miss one, or was there no regular acrylic in there? I have a beanie I want to dye, and the tag says it's 100% Acrylic. Very new to this. This video was a huge help though.
Edit: Can I mix red and blue to get a different purple?
Yes, this dye will work on 100% acrylic. You can definitely mix red and blue or purple and blue or purple and red, depending on the color you're going for. Good luck!
Thankyou SO MUCH!! This was extremely helpful
Glad it helped!
The stretchy lace came out pretty dark. Could I add red dye to the mix to make it a brighter purple?
Hi Anita, If you only leave the lace in a short period of time, it should come out lighter and brighter. You can add red if you want a warmer shade of purple, but it won't affect the brightness. Since this lace is 100% nylon, the regular Rit All-Purpose Dye works on it too. The lace came out lighter with the all-purpose dye. Find the video for it here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/rit-all-purpose-fabric-dye/
Very informative video.
Hello can you use it on kipling bags?
Thanks for the video, it’s very helpful! Quick question, when you wash the fabric , do you use detergent or just regular dish soap? Sorry if you already answered this and thanks !
You can use regular detergent!
Is the material used for velvet look flowers actually velvet? I need to change the color of mine without losing that velvet look or gloss. wil this dye work on them?
Would this method work with a polyester Sherpa material? I am trying to dye a rose colored romper brown and not quite sure how to go about it
It may, just be aware that extremely hot water may change the texture of your sherpa.
Can I dye the same clothing item with pink and black and how? In two different times?
Does anyone know a sub for dishwashing liquid? I only have Bronner's Castile soap and Sal Suds. I also have homemade washing soda powder and powder borax. Will any of this work? Thanks!
This is awesome. Thanks!
best explanation impossible
I have to frequently wear compression stockings, will this dye work so I can have a better choice of colors to wear?
Probably! Check what material they are made out of but I think this will work for you! You can find DyeMore here~ www.onlinefabricstore.net/brand-rit.aspx
You are going to want to use Rit All Purpose Dye on cotton, wool, silk, nylon and rayon fabrics and use Dye More on polyester, acrylic and acetate
i have a question....
if i have a black polymere piece and dip that into the purple solution....
can i create a nice purple hue?
You can dye many types of plastic with this dye but hard to say how black polymer specifically would except the dye. I'm guessing you may be able to get a very dark purple. It won't be any lighter than the black but if the black isn't a super dark black, the purple may be visible.
I have a dress that's 63% PE (I'm guessing that's polyester?), 31% viscose and 5% spandex. It als says on the lable to wash it at 30 degrees Celcius and not to tumble dry. It currently is between soft pink and bright pink in colour, but I would like it to be dark burgundy (though a bit more purple). Would it be possible to use this dye? And could I mix colours to get the desired shade?
If you stick to the washing directions on the dress, 30 degrees Celcius would probably not be hot enough for the dye bath, especially for the polyester fibers. If you're willing to risk it, you would likely be able to get the color you want with the water in the bath being near boiling. Along with the racing red color, using some of the graphite and possibly a little royal purple would be our suggestion for the color you describe.
I tried this with 90%polester and 10% spandex it didn't dye at all. What's wrong with it????
I want to dye a coral colored 100% poly dress to a medium blue. Should I keep it submerged in the hot dye mixture longer?
Hi Mandi, unfortunately it won't work to change coral polyester fabric to blue. Since they are opposite colors on the color wheel, it would likely come out a brownish, muddy color.
Good morning I would love to dye my white curtains to silver grey can it actually works...
I have a solid coral size medium polyestyer/spandex blouse I am planning to dye the graphite gray of the Dyemore...will that be successful since my original color is a rich coral??? Should I use 2 full bottles of the gray graphite Dyemore and how much water do you think in the pot (when I find a pot) hehehe to get the beautiful gray color????
You should probably only need one bottle! One bottle dyes up to two pounds of fabric.
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
RIP Wooden spoon
Hi I have a dress that is 95% poly and 5% spandex it’s pink and going to use blue to get purple you think it would work ?
Yes, I do!
Question, they only had the green color I wanted in the synthetic brand. Can I use this on a jacket that’s 97% cotton, 3% spandex?
Yes! You can! It will work that way, but it does not work the other way around (the RIT All Purpose will not dye synthetics)
The best test video of all time ... congratulations. A question ... I want to dye polyester tshirt but I want to fear tones ... not so intense but pastel tones ... how many tshirt could I dye with that bottle?
You could normally dye about 6 - 8 T-shirts to full color with 1 bottle. For a light shade, you may be able to double it, so about 12 - 16 shirts. This is my best guess, but you might want to ask the experts at Rit Dye: www.ritdye.com/contact/
The stretch lace looks the darkest, almost black on my phone. I am looking at dying a dress in that fabric, would you use less color to get a lighter shade on the stretch lace? Thanks so much, awesome video!
Yes, if the stretch lace is nylon like the sample we used, you can use less dye and take it out of the dye bath sooner. Some stretch lace is polyester which takes much longer to dye than nylon so it's helpful to know what it's made out of. Good luck!
Hello. Any tips on dyeing darker fabrics. After lots and lots of shopping, I have some perfect blackout curtains in which the blackout is PERFECT!! But, the purple is more blueish and my color scheme is a more reddish purple. I'd like to dye them *since it's been a nightmare finding really good quality blackout*... any tips on exactly what color combo to use to dye them a little redder than they are? OR if that's even possible...
You could try to use a wine red dye to change the under tones!
Hi, do you have a video tutorial on how to do ombré effect?
I’ve an old wedding dress that’s completed soiled on the hem and train. I’m hoping to ombré dye it from white to light Kentucky blue to dark sapphire blue at where its currently brown even after washing.
Thanks!
Sounds pretty! We have an ombre tutorial using Rit All-Purpose Dye, which would be similar. www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/how-to-dye-fabric-ombre-dip-dye-technique/
The thing that's tricky would be having a container large enough with a hot enough dye bath to get a nice dark sapphire color. It may work, but dyeing is always an experiment so you never really know how it's going to come out! Let us know how it turns out if you try it!
Great video! I was wondering what color would gold fabric brocade turn to if I added graphite color dye? Also, after dyeing, did you wash in washer or hand washed it? Thanks
It will probably make some type of muddy brown color. If you are looking for a dark brown, I would use brown not gray.
Would you recommend using this Rit synthetic dye or the all purpose dye for a Double Brushed Microfiber material?
Microfiber is usually a polyester or other synthetic fabric so Rit DyeMore would be best.
Hi i loved your video thank you!! I wanted to know can I dye synthetic organza will it burn?
No, just make sure that you keep stirring it and keep an eye on it
Why do you say "fry clean only"? These fabrics can only be dry-cleaned after dying? Why?
Ok soo why does the stretch lace look black?
hello.A QUESTION would adding salt or vinegar will make it hold the colouring better or stronger ?
Yes it will
love the faux fur - now just as with other dying if you start out with example a red dress and you use blue dye it "may" come out a shade of purple right??? or something to that effect
In theory, yes. It depends on the shade of red and blue and how saturated the colors are, but it should work to some degree.
Hi OnlineFabricStore! I want to dye an off-white 100% Polyester Gabardine vest a bright red (think UA-cam-red). Based on this video, I'm guessing it won't come out as deep as I want. What would you recommend? Dyeing it twice with red dye, or adding a little black dye to the red dye? Leaving it in the dye bath for an hour? Thank You for your help!!
Dying it twice would probably be your best bet.
Can i dye a bright colored satin (green) to navy blue? Will it just work the same? Or do i have to have a white color fabric to begin with?
Try using purple!
Hi, is it possible to dye 100% polyester tulle? The tag says not to wash above 40°c but water simmers at about 95°c, and I don't want to ruin my fabric. If I just dyed it in hot water instead of boiling, would it possibly still work? Thank you in advance for the help.
I would say it is worth a shot, but I am not confident it will give you your desired results. I would be worried that your color will not be very saturated.
Thank you for the video ❣️ I was wondering what if it’s a bag made of nylon how can I color it? I want to color the bag black.
Sure! You are going to want to use Rit Dye More.
