I dyed some jeans many years ago and have unopened bottles of Rit sitting around for years and loved your video. I'm guilty of too little heat! I'm going to look for a larger pot and the BBQ tank & propane heater is a good idea.
4:44 I like that you mentioned having a lot of water in a bigger container, and I think a lot of people just do it in a tiny sauce pot and think that they’re gonna get all that color in there it’s basically like one of those twisted up tie-dyes misses areas of fabric.
"Just roll with it." So I'm learning. Green is never in style and I love green, so if I want green shirts, the choices are go without or dye my own. I'm sitting here in a green-gray I dyed myself. It's not perfect, but I rolled with it. :-) And it gave a second life to a white shirt that was getting too yellowed out to wear, but still has two years of actual life in it.
I like green too...sometimes ya have to do it 2x to get the desired shade I found ....dont ask me why but I enjoy the process of dying and it makes me feel like I got a new outfit to boot! 😉
I have like 5? Navy blue poly polo shirts I need to be black. I have the rit dyemore and I'm hoping if i dump in the whole bottle and have it going for an hour, per instructions, they will be black. I need them for working outside. If it works out well im going to also embroider over the work patches somethin purty. We shall see! Thank you for the instructions
thank you!!!! I'm about to dye a barbie dress made out of tulle and organza black, it's original color is a powdery teal. Will see what happens! If you have any advice let me know!
I have a red 100% Polyester. I wish to dye Black. Would you recommend using blacck only? Or mixing the darker colors such purple, blue, black, brown, grey together in order to achieve darkest hue. I’m ok if it comes out marbled. So long as the red and the khaki embroidery is covered. Thank you. Great informative video.
I don’t have RIT dye and I don’t wanna go out and buy it or wait for it to come via Amazon, especially because I have alcohol based dye just lying around. Can I use the alcohol based on a 100% polyester bag?
9:09 that’s sort of the color I’m looking for for vintage lingerie items not always the color I usually wear, so it actually is helpful to see that pink.
Would be interesting to see if the dye works in colder temperatures (maybe using the spent solution as a base) Split the solution up into 4 batches and do 4 different test pieces at 4 different temperatures to see the result... It would not surprise me if the temperature is not as much of a factor as one might believe... I think the time the fabric is exposed to the solution and the strength of the solution has more effect on the result...
Can I dyed a polyester dress that is supposedly dry clean only? I’m worried about the heat but I HATE the color and I really want to wear it for my maternity shoot
Hi there! Thanks for the great video. If I wanted to have an ombré dye pattern how many minutes should each section be dyed for? For example, if I wanted to dye fabric for a long skirt and have the lightest color at the waist/abdomen area and the darkest at my feet should I remove part of the fabric every 5 minutes (If I dye for a total of 30 minutes then there will be about 6 dye segments and the dye times will be 5 minutes, 10, 15, 20, 25 and then 30 minutes for the last section). Is 5 minutes enough to get a little bit of color or is that too long? It’s a white fabric and I wanted to use a Navy Blue. I want the lightest section to be mostly white with a hint of the blue and the darkest to be a deep navy. TIA!
Would you recommend doing the rit synthetic dye outside in this same process? I'm trying to dye a big 1980s wedding dress bright red, its currently pink from my first attempt with the wrong dye :(
i would work outside with a big dress. you need to work in a well ventilated area and not in space you prepare food. drips will dry leaving behind powder residue which is very not healthy near food or in your lungs.
i have a shirt that is grey, but i need it to be black. it is 98% terylene and 2% spandex. ive tried the rit dye for synthetics fabrics but it did not work. would the idye work for these materials?
polyester is my favorite material...everything is own is mostly polyester. So I have a solid coral polyester spandex top and I am planning to color it graphite grey with the dyemore brand. Should I use two bottles of the graphite Dyemore??? How much water should I use for the right results??? Does it matter what size stainless steel pot i get and is there a way to clean the pot afterwards or is it ruined for good????
I have this red Patognia deep pile fleece. red is not my color, so I tried to dull it with Rit Dye more brown. I think the fleece parts that touched the bottom of the hot pan, took color, and the rest did not. so now I have splotchy red fleece with brown patches. UGH!! So now im buying the Ipoly Jacquard, in blue, to try to maybe get a dark purple. I'm so sad because I'll have to boil the fleece and kill all the soft fuzziness. im an idiot.
What is lyocell? I am dying two white shirts to black and hoping the " back to black" box kit does the job. Shirts are for work. I needed long sleeve button up shirts and could only find white long sleeve button up.
Omg. I just learned something new. Thnx for doing this video. Do you dye clothing for others? I'm in need of dying a few outfits...? Are you on the east coast. You mentioned Secadas...

Hello, I have an Ivory Satin bridesmaid dress, 100% polyester, i just want to tint it a couple shades darker, more of a cream or beige, can I use tea bags for that?
Hi please help asap I need to dye a 95% polyester 5% spandex white bandage dress to a blue or black even. Do you think it’ll be ruined by dying or even take the color?
Thanks for the video. I think that's a pretty color-- sort of a dark salmon, it if's picking up the way it is in real life. I've been dying for a while now but only cottons. This is my first foray into synthetic. Since I'm not sure what the differences are, I've been looking at what others have done. Yes, red is a tough color. Black, too, I'm told. I tried three times to dye one pair of white cotton jeans -- first they were pink, then darker pink (sort of neon pink), and the third time I got cherry red. I really don't like bright reds. I was trying for Christmas red. I am now happy to have a really deep purple. LOL! I don't know if it's the dye or the fabric but it's very hard to get red to stay. It also, BTW, will always have to be washed separately because it always bleeds. Found that out the hard way, too. At least, that was my experience. Now I'm about to try dying a bright red synthetic sweater purple. You're right when you say, "you never know how it will come out." LOL! But I won't wear it the way it is. BTW, one reason I was looking around is that, elsewhere (not sure where, exactly), I saw or read that when dying synthetics, you should add a cup or so of vinegar to the dye bath. With cottons they recommended a cup of salt which I've used and besides the stubborn red, has done a great job. Afterwards, too, there was advice on a natural fixative-- it could be vinegar again, but that's the part I can't remember. Have you heard of that?
What are your recommendations for using Rit dye?
