all your videos are so helpful. with dyes, once I have soaked an item in a dye bath, can I continue to use the same bath for other items? If I still have some left over, can I cover it and use it the next day etc? It won't be hot any more but I could heat it again...would that work?
So one bottle (or packet) of dye will dye about 2 lbs. of fabric. After that, you will start to see less saturation in your color. So, that doesn't mean that you can't use it until the color wears out, but you are just not going to get consistent results.
So which dye should we use for a 50% cotton 50% polyester sweatshirt? I was told to use Dye More, I follow the directions to a 'T' but every single time I use it &take it out of the washer my colors wash out and are pastel instead of staying vibrant !
Can you turn a dark color lighter, like if I had orange tool handle, can I make it blue?? Everyone is just showing black. It's exhausting. I want to see some experimental things. Dark orange to green or blue ?? Thanks 🎉
Thank you. This was helpful. I'm wondering how to deal with the stiches when the thread is synthetic. I used all purpose dye on a top and it looks beautiful. But the thread remained in the old color. Contrasting stitches is a look, just not the look I was going for. In that case, should I use Dyemore?
Will certain dyes still leech color even after you used the rit Colorsafe fixative? I dyed some socks, underwear and a tshrit with the red Rit dye. I used the bucket method on both the dye and fixative baths with hot water as the directions say. When I went to wash the items after the fixative bath in warm water after rinsing them under cold running water, I noticed it still turned the wash water color. Even after using 2 bottles of fixative.
Thank you for this video! I am dying a 97% cotton shirt and some white masks (made by haynes and look like underwear LOL) I decided to use the dyemore because the color I want simply isn't available in the all purpose. (the sapphire) My questions. In the video you seemed to specifiy using the fix it for all purpose but didn't mention the dyemore. I don't care if the color fades, but I don't want it to run on other clothes. Do I need to fix the dyemore?
Usually, you don't need to use fixative with dyemore, however, that is based off of the material your garment is made out of. Since you are using dyemore on cotton, you may want to use the fixative. It will help keep the color stay for longer and make it more vibrant.
Thanks for this video ! ¿If I were to want to dye a mostly polyester yellow dress into brown, how would I go about that process? Would removing the color help at all ?
is there a way to dye something that has patches attached to it without coloring the patches? like something to cover the front of the patches in to save it from the dye? sorta like when u cover your skin with vaseline while dyeing your hair so your skin doesn't get stained.
Thank you for this question because I was thinking the same thing. Trying to dye my blue and white strip cotton/nylon apron black.i think the white turn partially black and the blue turn green. Every time I wash it, the color doesn't stay. However, I was about to heat press my initials on it so I don't have to share an apron with other workers.
Can you use the rit dye remover to create an acid wash look? Or does it have to have the fabric submerged to remove dye? Specifically I'm thinking of using rit dye remover with a damp sponge to create an acid wash/stone wash effect.
if I dye outside cushion/ day bed pillow what type of dye would be better ( it's cotton i believe ). will the dye transfer after I lay on the bed after being in the pool ? thankyou
Thanks for the video :) I understand that you should use Dyemore with synthetics if it's 35%+ (that's a given) and regular with cotton/naturals. It's easy to understand why you need the dyemore for synthetics but no one has mentioned why you shouldn't use it on cottons? I would think the dyemore would be a stronger dye? and maybe actually do a better job on cotton? I would appriecate any that knows the answers to Please inform me. I wanted to dye some cotton but thought that I would not be using the whole bottle of dye up, so I should buy the Dyemore, so I could use it on other small items later on.
Dyemore is not "stronger" it's a different chemical process. The actual chemical process used for synthetics doesn't work as well on natural fibers. What this amounts to is if you use Dyemore on natural fabrics, it will actually dye much lighter than the standard dye.
Ive spent like an hour on the internet trying to find this out so ill just ask you (the expert) What will the results be like if i use rit dyemore racing red on a dark red/almost maroon pair of jeans? They are like 78% cotton 20% polyester and im going for the brightest red possible.
I was planning to dye an old pair of faded blue jeans but first I sewed a patch with ordinary all-purpose 100% polyester thread figuring it would turn blue once I dyed the jeans but *it did NOT absorb much of the dye* and that is when I realized that the regular cotton dye is not good at dying synthetics - even synthetic thread.

Hi! Lovely video! I have a question: each and every time I dye clothing, with all purpose or synthetic dye, the actual thread that goes through the pieced of fabric remains undyed. I hate how it looks afterwards, very patchwork-like. How can one make sure that the thread seams are also dyed? Thanks!
Your best bet would be to use the dye more for synthetic materials and really hot water. It is really tough to tell because usually the thread is not listed in the fiber contents.
Agree - this used to drive me bananas. You may not be adding enough heat, or enough dye. Generally the thread in most clothes is 100% polyester and will not pick up dye easily. The one time I got a perfect result when dyeing jeans (from tan to very deep chocolate brown) was to use one bottle of all-purpose Rit dye in dark brown, and a bottle of synthetic Rit dye in dark brown. I dyed the jeans in the washing machine at 60 degrees Celsius with this mix and both the jeans fabric (cotton-based corduroy) AND stitching dyed perfectly dark brown. I hope this helps you. :)
@@rebecca_stoneThanks you! Awesome info. Surprising how little experimenting is documented. I have a bottle of Rit Brand Purple DyeMore (Synthetic) and Rit Black All Purpose (Cotton) and I finally feel ready to combine the two bottles to dye 7 lbs of old jeans and one white pair of jeans. I bought a 32 Quart aka 31 Liter aluminum pot at Walmart for $32 - I just saw that aluminum can become pitted by the salt so use a pot that you don't care about. I will follow the synthetic instructions with high heat just under boiling about 195 F and stir for 1 hour.
@@pcofranc Oooh, OK - good luck with that. Update us on how you go! Black jeans with purple stitching sounds very cool! Rit is in theory permanent. It may fade over time and is especially likely to fade if you don’t use their color fixative or if you wash the item in hot water.

If i have a shirt that’s exactly 35% polyester 65% cotton, will the all purpose work to dye it? I have two pieces i want to die similar colors so I want to use the same dye for both
I would probably recommend using dye more for both! DyeMore will dye cotton and other natural materials, but the other way around does not work. I would caution that if you used the all purpose, you would dye both, but you might not the same color with the one that is not 100% cotton.
What about a polyester with like 8% spandex? You said the spandex wouldn't get dyed, but would its fibers be noticeable? It's in there to let the polyester be a stretchier fabric, which is what I'm needing.

Hi, I have problem where I dye a couple of shirts and I add salt to the dye mixture for the color to stay long but each time I wash the shirt it the color of the shirt becomes lighter and lighter... Please help
What material is it? Bleach can really damage fibers.. You might be able to use rit color remover! This works on cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie, rayon and nylon. You can find it here - www.onlinefabricstore.com/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm
I'm only 230 min in but how do I lock the dye in to where it stays on the one thing I wanted to dye??lol ok question answered I knew I should have waiting on the question 🙂
Informative vid. I want to dye my carpet in greens, starting with emerald green with a little bit of pink I and another color, can you advise me how to do it and with which colors would you use? And thank you so much
Okay, start here. We have a Ombre Dye tutorial (ua-cam.com/video/9PpIkXBpgMo/v-deo.html) Check that out and see if that is what you are interested in doing. Then you are going to want to pick out your colors. When you are purchasing, I would get about 2 times more than you think you will need, and also order some muslin or a similar cheep fabric (that you can test the technique on) Then when that comes in you are going to want to do a couple of test runs on the muslin to nail down what you want it to look like. I would recommend kind of sketching it out on a piece of paper, and then dying. There is going to be a learning curve, so that is why I would try it on a cheep fabric first. Then when you are happy with the look that you are getting, make a new dye bath and dye your rug!
Thank you for your video, it is really helpful! My question is, do I use salt or vinegar for 100% polyester? I didn't hear that fabric in your list of fabrics.
It's hard to say since different fabrics react very differently. You may be able to get it to a cream or ivory color, but I doubt you could get it to a bright white.
You could.. but you would have a really hard time keeping it from bleeding so it might be more of a blob (not a spot) You would also need heat it to set the dye permanently, otherwise it is just going to wash out when it gets wet. If I had a little more info, I might be able to help more. Let me know!
do you have a product that would work well for dying a couch that has a pattern that i want to restore? it is sun bleached on parts of the chair, but i love the chair and the potential it has to come back to life. i don’t want to change the colors on the couch or dye it all one color. there’s about three colors in it, and i would for sure have to use a paint brush to apply the dye. what would my best option be for this project?
I seen a video, it came up in my recommendations on here, it was of a couch dyed with rit dyemore, that might be helpful for you, forget the title but sure you can find it on here if you search rit dyemore couch or something
I have a pop-up camper that has the original curtains, which are currently light brown/beige. I would like to dye them teal. I have not been able to find what the fiber content is. It is a tightly woven canvas, medium thickness. I am wondering if it would be worth trying to strip the color that is there or just dying it? I think there are a total of 9 panels, and one is much larger than the others. An article about a pop up renivation mentioned buying 15 yards of fabric to redo curtains if that helps any for my next question. I saw on a dying tutorial about putting all the bottles of dye together and dividing from there.I plan to dye in my top-loader washing machine. Should the dye be divided evenly by loads or by percent of total amount of curtain is in that particular load? In case my last question didn't make sense, let's say one load, A, has two panels, each is two feet by three feet. Then let's say there is another load, B, that is one panel which is 9 feet by 7 feet. Would it be better to do same everything including water, amount of dye, amount of soap for each load or should I put more dye in load B since it is more material?
I would say that if you are looking to get a really saturated teal you will want to strip as much color out of the material before hand (using rit color remover - www.onlinefabricstore.com/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm ) As for the second half of your question, your load B should have more dye since there is more material. You should be using one bottle of dye for ever 2 lbs of material or if you are using powder dye, you will need one box per 1 lb of material.
Thanks for all the good tips! I have a dress that's 95% cotton, 5% spandex. Will it take to the dye since it has a bit of spandex? If so, which dye works best, and should I use a stovetop, bucket, or washing machine method? Thanks again!
I would probably use All Purpose. Dye More isn't going to dye the spandex anyways. When you are looking at the garment, you probably won't be able to tell that a few threads aren't dyed. Good luck!
Oh and I missed the second half of your question.. It is personal preference. I prefer dying in the washing machine because it is a whole lot easier, but it is fun to do over the stove and you have a little more control over the water temp. if you are concerned about shrinking the shirt.
Same i have pair of crye precision g3 combat pamts in khaki but there slowly looking faded and between the legs upper back and slightly around the knees and lower thighs is kinda like a spandex fabric thats stretchy even if its the tanish colpr dye all be happy with that the main fabric is a ripstop cotton meteral i just wana semi restore them even if there not true khaki

What can I use to make prints on the solid colors I saw a tutorial and they were using some type of clear liquid and then they dipped it in a full stock of celery and it made the perfect print for a rose
I guess I am not sure what project you are referring to.. What is coming to my mind is a method called Batik dying, here is our tutorial - ua-cam.com/video/C4MBRZIQxXI/v-deo.html You might be talking about a tie dying technique, and I am no professional there, so I would say that your best bet would be to find more channels that specialize in that type of dying. I would stray away from anything like the five minute craft style videos though because I do find that a lot of the projects that channels like that put out short form content in long videos on FB or YT are often not real. I see more often than not that the projects that they put out there will not work. (think the channels that put a cut rose in a banana and then say a rose bush grew from the cutting, it just will not work) I can not say for sure, but putting something in a celery stock seems like it would not product the results that you are speaking about. I could be wrong, but I am super weary with projects like that because "movie magic" is the real trick, not the project itself.
I want to dye a muslin blanket different colors. Can I use a spray bottle abs spray the colors I want using hot water onto a hot muslin blanket and let it sit? Will the color still penetrate?
Yes! Here is what I have done in the past. I applied the dye, and put the whole thing in a plastic bag. Then, I dunked the bag in super hot water and put something on top so it stayed submerged for a while. After about a half hour, I took it out and sprayed it down with Dye Fixative before I rinsed out the dye. Best of luck with your blanket! You got this!
Thanks for the info! I have a school bag that I want to dye. ( A blend of polyester and nylon). Its teal or cyan as of now and I want to dye it red. What are the chances of this actually working and being red and not purple or a grey?
Unfortunately, since red is a primary color, I don't think there is any way that you can get red out of blue.. You would probably end up with purple. Perhaps you could go with another color like green?
I appreciate all the effort you put into answering many of my questions. Thank you!

Which rit dye I should use to dye cotton shorts with polyester stitching? I hate it when you dye and the stitching doesn't dye because it is made of polyester. I used Dylan dye to colour my cotton shorts. The dye coloured my shorts but not the stitching. The stitching was white. And I do not like that. Thanks.
Can I dye dark clothes with pink fabric dye? Will it work?
Why does it have to be hot water? I just tie dyed with room temp…seemed to be okay
Hi, I have problem where I dye a couple of shirts and I add salt to the dye mixture for the color to stay long but each time I wash the shirt it the color of the shirt becomes lighter and lighter... Please help
So can I dye a swimsuit that’s 95% polyester 5% spandex and it’s machine wash cold ?
Great video, is there a product or chemical to remove dye out of polyester fabric?
My question too
I have a black piece and I would like to dye it a red or a lighter color in general, would it work if I bleach the piece first?
What material is it? Bleach can really damage fibers.. You might be able to use rit color remover! This works on cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie, rayon and nylon. You can find it here - www.onlinefabricstore.com/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm
my work hoodie has an iron on logo on the chest, if i re dye the hoodie will it ruin the iron on?
How do I get the color to come out even? It's very spotty.
I use RIT for spandex and stretch mesh all the time. Vinegar and dish detergent. Extra hot water. No issues. Not sure what they say that.
Thank you for your video, it is really helpful! My question is, do I use salt or vinegar for 100% polyester? I didn't hear that fabric in your list of fabrics.
So actually you don't need to use either with polyester! You just use the dye more.
I have a red fabric and i bought a purple dye, will my red fabric turn purple?
Which fabrics shrink from the water?
I was wondering if I could dye a yellow sweater white by using colour remover and then possibly bleaching it. Would it work?
It's hard to say since different fabrics react very differently. You may be able to get it to a cream or ivory color, but I doubt you could get it to a bright white.
Can you spot treat?
Hi, does the salt need to be iodized for it to work? And for vinegar, is it best to use white vinegar? Thanks!
No, it doesn't have to be iodized, and yes, white vinegar works great!
I need to dye spot on a coat sleeve. Can I just spot dye with a q- tip with RIT instead of soaking the jacket.
Thanks
You could.. but you would have a really hard time keeping it from bleeding so it might be more of a blob (not a spot) You would also need heat it to set the dye permanently, otherwise it is just going to wash out when it gets wet.
@@onlinefabricstore thank you!
Hello, can you dye tweed fabric?
I love your video! Is it possible to dye white satin gloves?
Yes! Use DyeMore
Thank you!
Between 180°F and 220°F or almost boiling? Water boils at 212...
@@darylobey8867 It's worth a shot!
Do you think RIT Dyemore would work on a 95% poly 5% spandex dress?
You should be able to with Rit Dye More
@@onlinefabricstore Thank you! Your videos are so inspiring!
And with the poly blend do you use vinegar or salt?
@@tanderson1368 For polyester you don't need to use either!
Thanks for the video! Would it work if I dye polyester facbric with oil stains?
try taking out the oil stains first. I swear by dawn dish soap (the one with the duck on the bottle) It cuts grease like you could not even believe.
Hi! Thank you so much for this video!
If it's polyester, which most velvets are, you can use Rit DyeMore Synthetic Fiber Dye. See our tutorial here: www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/rit-dyemore-synthetic-fiber-dye/
Will my 100% cotton a hanes white tshirt still dye with rit dye more synthetic?
And if I wanted to do it with coffee how would I do thaf
Thank you for this info. I have a question: I'd like to use rit synthetic dye (Only Synthetic) to make the color black, I know I can use the prime colors however, is there other colors I can use to make a nice black?
Black can be a little tricky to achieve, but this is your best bet - www.onlinefabricstore.com/rit-dye-more-synthetic-graphite-.htm
What can I use to make prints on the solid colors I saw a tutorial and they were using some type of clear liquid and then they dipped it in a full stock of celery and it made the perfect print for a rose
I guess I am not sure what project you are referring to.. What is coming to my mind is a method called Batik dying, here is our tutorial - ua-cam.com/video/C4MBRZIQxXI/v-deo.html
You might be talking about a tie dying technique, and I am no professional there, so I would say that your best bet would be to find more channels that specialize in that type of dying.
@@onlinefabricstore Thank you! I think I'm gonna go for a darker blue or a green.
@@stephaniehernandezgarcia7275 you can remove the teal color first with a color remover and then dye it red and it will probably do just fine.
