The alpha was testing to see who the real alpha was by taking that one step forward. He saw Diaz took a couple steps back toward ottway for protection, and ottway stood his ground and stared at him. That's all the wolf was looking for.
Spot on comment! It looked like that Alpha wolf "put them back in line!" XD ...LITERALLY! :D The wolf takes one step forward and Diaz - who's already back on his feet - takes a step back and aligns himself with the others - which means he's not the "leader of the bunch". That wolf has probably been watching them for a long time, trying to figure out which one of these men is the most "prized catch". Chilling to think wolves might have not just teeth and muscles but an almost (for lack of a better term) "diabolical" intelligence! :)
@@2serveand2protect Yep, and prior to this scene Diaz said he wasn't afraid of the wolves, like being afraid showed weakness. Scariest thing about it, is that seems to be "sniffing them" to find out which one reeks of fear and which one is the "most prized catch" - almost like it wants to save the most valuable of them for itself. In the last scene of the movie, John is surrounded the whole pack of them - and yet they are holding back! I remember I was baffled why they do not simply "dispatch him". Then the "Alpha" came and - from what I understood - he was the one holding whole pack back to kill him itself. Another way not just to kill an "enemy" or "perceived threat" - but an ASSERTION OF DOMINANCE over all the other wolves. PS. Wolves way of "doing politics"! 😆😆 STUNNING movie!
For those of you saying why didn't they advance on the alpha I hope this explains. The only two capable members is probably Diaz and Ottway. The rest can't truly fight. Ottway and the alpha probably know this which is why the alpha showed up the way it did. The alpha knows it can get in and out quickly faster than the men so it didn't even need to look back to know they weren't going to attack. Each member is crucial to their survival so they couldn't going for the alpha on a whim that they could kill it knowing some of there members would have been killed.
Didn't they have the 12 gauge shotgun shells attached to the ends of their sticks and had them rigged too fire on impact in this scene? They could have advanced on the Alpha and either killed him or forced him to retreat, that might have demoralized the rest of the pack and made them flee.
I have german shepard, everytime I try to give her a hug, mind you she see me coming, she dodges faster than I can anticipate which way she going to run
The Alpha most likely had the rest of the pack hanging back in the darkness, probably not even that far from the group. If any one of them tried rushing it, let alone all of them, the pack would’ve attacked on instinct.
This thing clearly isn't a wolf it's too big and demonic, more like a direwolf or something, but anyway I think they were made like that on purpose. Clearly the movie isn't just about a simple survival against a pack of wolves, it has alot to do with philosophical scenarios and surely there are more than one possibility what exactly is happening.
I personally dig the interpretation that this isn't a survival movie; but that they're all in the process of dying throughout what we're seeing. The "wolves" are taking each of them in turn as they die off -- and the reason the alpha looks a little bit wrong, a little too uncanny and monstrous, is that it isn't a wolf at all. It's Death. I don't think that's the only way to read the movie; I think if you see it as a straight-up survival movie that story is there. But for me it made the creature design of the alpha make more sense -- because the other wolves don't look like that. The alpha feels a little fantastical, in a movie that is otherwise, on the face of it, just humans and animals and life and death. It makes sense to me that there was an implication this thing wasn't just a wolf.
Well the alpha wolf theory has been debunked but the average bite force a grown wolf is around 400 pounds of pressure per square inch so if the wolf wanted to it could definitely do some damage but it seems like this wolf aka the Alpha was just curious and sniffing the group of men out he didn’t come to attack.
I was walking in the woods last year and encountered a coyote (not as big as a wolf but still formidable) I remembered this movie so instead of backing away like Diaz did I took a step forward. The coyote ran off

My understanding of wolves is shit. I would assume them killing their alpha would mean the others would attack the humans and vie for that position or do it in another way.
