A short but comprehensive interview of Mark Gatiss & his development of "Sherlock." He clearly has a great understanding , respect and passion for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels. This admiration is at the essence of his own adaptation of the work. His translating the work--the character's roles in society in particular and how they live and work in the present day--is probably one of the most interesting aspects of the adaptation itself. I'm definitely a fan!
iammadness Nobody said you can't. Sherlock was made by very talented fans of the book and, to other fans of the book, it has so much more to offer than the said movies. The references, the inside jokes, the script based on the canon. It gives more of the things I yearn for in the books (e.g. more Mycroft, more background, etc.) without being revolting, which is an achievement by itself since most adaptations tend to be such.
The movies have more comedy so they can't be taken as seriously at all, while the series just has a certain seriousness to it that makes you feel everything...Series 3 episode 3 was amazing on that scene with the twist and sherlock does his mind palace thing. Trying not to spoil lol.
I can never decide wether I want to go to the pub with him and have a good laugh and hug him or wether I am deadly afraid of him^^ even when I met him and he was perfectly nice and put his arm around me for a picture, I hardly dared touching him. but he´s utterly brilliant and I love the man!
What I love about this series is after I've watched an episode I feel like I have just been day dreaming and fantasizing. It's like the show caries on in my head after. I usually only get that engagement when reading a book and very rarely from movies.
I love this version of "Sherlock" so much!! I have watched this first three series again and again. It IS brilliant!!!!! Please please please make more soon!!! Series 4 is so needed and soon!!!!!!!!!
Totally adored Sherlock - all episodes, the writing is superb and held me spellbound - that doesn't happen often!! Such a refreshing version, well done to everyone connected to this masterpiece
YES!!! Please continue making more, the first three were fantastic! I have been telling my friends that they need to watch the series. They are very intellectually engaging and full of action. The first aired episode was my favorite, it was perfect.
The real problem is that people, especially young people, don’t read. They have computers, kindles, cell phones, etc. You can download a copy of an ebook for them and they have every excuse for not reading it. They would rather view stupid pet videos and trash rather than be encouraged to think. Thank you for doing your part to bring some light in a world of literary darkness. The series makes me want to read the original stories more.
Jeremy Brett's performance as Holmes was, arguably, the TV drama performance that fed, among other things, the revisionism of Doctor Who and, in turn, the writers who helped that - Gatiss and Moffatt included - giving them the light to look at Holmes afresh. Gatiss should doff the cap to Brett to some extent.
oh my, they've transformed the dour, jarring, Basil Rathbone character into someone that's clever yet charmingly vulnerable "high functioning sociopath". Frankly they've put in a well-deserved dose of sexiness into the character, which is unparalleled by even James Bond. They've done such a FANTASTIC job of getting him into the current timeline- it makes sense in just about all angles.
I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and all the incarnations of them. However, this version is absolutely AMAZING! Please let there be another season (I think they say 'series', in the U.K.)... PLEASE, MAKE MORE EPISODES!!! (Two seasons. Three seasons. Four seasons. I'll watch them all! Please, just make sure that those of us in the U.S., and in other countries, who love this series are able to see more. PLEASE!!!!)
You realise how brilliant an actor Mark Gatiss is when you watch League of Gentlemen Live At Drury Lane and he swaps characters in a heart beat... This guy. All the awards.
"It's Arthur Conan Doyle's genius that is behind it", well, somewhat. The real genius behind this is Gatiss & Moffat - they could continue making episodes forever that weren't even based on the original stories and they would still be incredible
it's almost adorable how insecure he felt about doing this version of Sherlock, but look at us now, we are desperate for more Sherlock!!!! :D Can't wait for S3, I heard it starts Jan 1st 2014 :)
Wow. That's cool that he plays Mycroft and is also a writer. He's obviously brilliant at both. Well done. And thanks to them for recognizing the complete perfection of Benedict Cumberbatch. He IS "fantastic", as Mark Gatiss says. He blows away anyone else. Absolutely phenomenal. (Sorry, RDJr., I've loved ya for years, but you lose this round.)
@Janiemanie1993 It means if you reject an idea that isn't working, you may not want to lose it completely if there is still a part of it that's good and right.
Love the series, but just couldn't stop laughing when Mark says he can't smoke a pipe he's 34! My friend is 21 and smokes a pipe we also all call each other by our last names. Nothing wrong with any of this, it just reminded me what a unique group of people I know.
The part where Mark talks about when they were deciding if Sherlock has a drug habit or if he smokes a pipe, well it seems they converted all the 19th century things very well. Pipe smoking= cigarette smoking He still has a bit of a drug habit though. The books are set in John's view and in the books he writes down the cases Sherlock has encountered in a journal, so in the show he owns a blog with their cases in it.
They stole my heart and soul with this Sherlock. I've always resisted to see the life of SH in the XXI century, 'cos I thought it would be unbearable piece of shit without the atmosphere of Victorian England. Hardly anyone can make a worthy movie based on Conan Doyle's works, imagine how difficult it could be without all their watches, tobacco-pipes, back of telegrams and so on? But what they have made is fantastic, thrilling and capturing imagination. I take my hat off to them.
As much as I love Sherlock, I don't think Jeremy Brett's version was shackled in any way by "Victoriana". Cast strong enough actors and they'll rise above all that. Also, as good as Benedict Cumberbatch is, he has a *long* way to go to beat Jeremy Brett.
I don't care what anyone says. Mark Gatiss is a fantastic writer.
has anyone contradicted that?
pd people don't like the hound of the Baskervilles that he wrote
@@tanvi9877 why not, it's one of my favorite episodes.
As john watson says "fantiiastic"
I love Mark Gatiss as Mycroft. Simply amazing. Frankly I think he steals every scene he is in with Sherlock.
A,amazing that someone who seems so nice and polite can capture someone as much of a cold, dispassionate ass as Mycroft :)
I completely agree and Benedict Cumberbatch is on a whole other level.
what do you mean "Benedict Cumberbatch is on a whole other level" ??
This series is brilliant: the writing, acting, casting, the humor. There is no other show that I can start the episode over right after it ends.

series is waay better than robert downey movie.
Both have a very different appeal to me. I can like them for what they are.

Sherlock from the series is almost TOO smart, even for Sherlock Holmes.
I like both, but I love the series more. ☺️
Mark Gatiss is the perfect man, no doubt about it
I love Mark Gatiss... from League of Gentlemen to Sherlock... such a writer... :)
just tell us how he pulled off that building jump!!
Wow. Mark Gatiss completely transforms when he plays Mycroft.
just another number on the list of reasons why I love Mark Gatiss :)
He is a fine actor. It's a shame he doesn't get more work as one.
I can never decide wether I want to go to the pub with him and have a good laugh and hug him or wether I am deadly afraid of him^^ even when I met him and he was perfectly nice and put his arm around me for a picture, I hardly dared touching him. but he´s utterly brilliant and I love the man!
He's a writer AND Mycroft?! What a talent! o:

Gatiss is brilliant, he's done so many different things.
Totally adored Sherlock - all episodes, the writing is superb and held me spellbound - that doesn't happen often!! Such a refreshing version, well done to everyone connected to this masterpiece
He's lovely.
YES!!! Please continue making more, the first three were fantastic! I have been telling my friends that they need to watch the series. They are very intellectually engaging and full of action. The first aired episode was my favorite, it was perfect.
The greatest show ever made. It must be wonderful being from the UK. I feel so inadequate watching the genius that is this show.
it's weird how Doyle created a character that he himself would hate to meet, seeing as how spiritual he became

What a lovely guy!
You realise just how brilliant Mark is at acting when you compare how he behaves as Mycroft to how he normally behaves :)
Please, God, let there be another series!!!
oh god PLEASE let there more episodes! the modern sherlock holmes is sheer genius
I love him.
I watched it a few hours ago. It was amazing!
So brilliant
oh yes, please do more...this brilliant idea can't end with 3 episodes !!!
I love his description, it's fabulous.
He's so brilliant.
You guys have a RIGHT to be proud of it. God damn...the show practically fell from Heaven.
The cheekbones.....

And we did, Mark!
I'm so glad they respect guy ritchie's movie, and most of all, the legacy of the character of sherlock holmes
i agree, the greatest show ever made
Caroline Wojo I think it's actually Sgt. Donovan.
I hear rumours of a Season 5!
we dont even HAVE SEASON 3 :(
Opheilas actually apperently there is supposed to also be a season 4
These comments are funny to watch now, when we now we are getting a season 4 xD
And now that Series 4 is almost over :P
It's over :(

Mark Gatiss is my writitng hero
cumberbatch is a great sherlock but i feel that the "ICEMAN" is unmatchable. only he deserves to be the older holmes!
Is that Sally Donovan interviewing him?
All hail Godtiss
Gatiss is a God!! :)
'What did you think of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock?'/'He's dreadful.' Bless.
"good evening" >:D
Mark Gatiss. I can't even... *flail*
'What do you think of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock?' "he's dreadful...!"
LOL! :-D
@zuewaerg any date set for when its supposed to start?
BEARD
I stole his razor. He was mean to me.
I heard Matt Smith for one and of course he eventually went on to become the 11th Doctor.
I couldn't believe, he plays Mycroft :-D
@Janiemanie1993 It means if you reject an idea that isn't working, you may not want to lose it completely if there is still a part of it that's good and right.
i'm not they're house keeper darling - Mrs. hudson.
he seems like a really nice person , totally different from his character :D
I really have a weird question, what do celebrities smell like?
They smell like celebrities
That comment is one of the few comments ever to make me laugh uncontrollably. Felt I should tell you that
@ChippyMinton40 Good point! That's so true.
Is that Donovan interviewing?
Love the series, but just couldn't stop laughing when Mark says he can't smoke a pipe he's 34! My friend is 21 and smokes a pipe we also all call each other by our last names. Nothing wrong with any of this, it just reminded me what a unique group of people I know.
"We happen to think its good" hahahahahaha oh man you couldn't be more wrong.
its BRILLIANT.
The part where Mark talks about when they were deciding if Sherlock has a drug habit or if he smokes a pipe, well it seems they converted all the 19th century things very well.
Pipe smoking= cigarette smoking
He still has a bit of a drug habit though.
The books are set in John's view and in the books he writes down the cases Sherlock has encountered in a journal, so in the show he owns a blog with their cases in it.
he has a morphine addiction in the books
but i might be wrong
so many books so little time

He would have been a great Moriarty!! Physically he fits the description from the stories to a "T"
I love how he doesnt like benedict for a while then he says he love him lol
@Janiemanie1993 Irish/English, hard to tell.
NO DISLIKES! LOL! EVERY ONE LOOOVES SHERLOCK!
what's his mother going to say about this letting your brother face a consulting criminal almost about to die how upset she must be with them both.
TYRA WILL FORGIVE
He's So Cute
Is the interviewer Sally Donnovan, or is it just me...?
I wonder who else auditioned for John Watson..:/
Mycroft!
The interviewer sounds like Martha Jones from Doctor Who...
Are you saying better than Andrew Scott?!?!?
As much as I love Sherlock, I don't think Jeremy Brett's version was shackled in any way by "Victoriana". Cast strong enough actors and they'll rise above all that. Also, as good as Benedict Cumberbatch is, he has a *long* way to go to beat Jeremy Brett.
0 dislikes. I don't think anyone considers the series heresy :)
Interesting. Moriarty hasn't found this one.
He looks strange without a brolly under his hand :P
DAT beard. My first reaction. And that will be all that I put in this comment.
He is good but he needs a horror film to make him bigger as moffatt did tin tin, mind you Leauge of gentlemen was out
Any other fangirl of fanboy chuckle at the last two sentences?
Cheekbones.
Mark wanted Matt Smith for the role of Sherlock
I find it secretly disappointing that he's acting normal in this interview... :-(
@stereotypedindivdual I've got good news for you...
Kinda looks like and talks a bit like Joss Whedon here. Both brilliant though.
:D
wen he said fetishization. xD
Lipsync fail
There is nothing not excellent about any of this.
TYRA WILL FORGIVE
