After seeing your absolutely stunning presented videos, i swapped to the mono d rig, self sharpened size 6 hooks and attached the bait via mono loop...stunning hookholds, caught 4 fish in one night from a spot i blanked the last 2 years.

You have to love rig tying of course because being mono it’s basically only good for one carp but they are quick to tie and you can pre-prep the hookbaits with a loop of mono in advance as well. Hi mate, okay cool. Don’t forget to take plenty of chod twisters with you. Each angler gets through 2-3 packets a week here at Beausoleil. New hook every cast and have new ones tied and ready to fly all the time. It’s the best way of keeping the runs coming but keeps costs down as you only use mono. Have a great trip! Matt.

Hi Matt I've had a successful 48hr six fish nothing massive,up to twenty's .I was getting the rigs picked up by nuisance nuisance fish so changed to a fluorocarbon rig like yours as it resets.In another one of your video's if you use a inturned eye the angle the material leaves the eye is too aggressive.I tryed the rig with Nash claw hooks fishing a snowman bait .It literally nailed every run bang in the bottom lip. It's not the first time I've used your tips when a situation comes up I wasn't expecting.Keep the tips coming your getting me more Carp on the bank, cheers pal 💪

Hi Matt. I tied up 10 of these rigs for use last Sunday, as they really only work once or twice afte hooking and I have to say they worked a treat. All my hook holds were as you stated in the video, bottom lip and well in. The only thing I found hard was attaching the bait using mono, the lake I was on 'Mathern Mill' nr Chepstow and does not allot boilies so I use Chick Peas which I tested the night before worked fine simply being pierced with two strands of mono and burnt the tag end. Later in the session I swapped over to drilled Robin Red pellets which work a treat, but the bigger ones have a bigger drilled hole so had to pass the mono around twice, not the end of the world but nice to keep the mono unseen as possible... Finally as everybody will know knot strength is the thing with these rigs, I had one go south on me even though I'd tested it the night before, luckily not with a carp on! probably better to tie these on the bank, but with my eyesight these days I have to do them in advance :-). Overall a really great rig which I can adapt to the various baits I use.... Nice one Matt
Hi Malcolm, thanks so much for your feedback on the rig. I'm delighted it worked for you. You're right, the downside with the mono is it damages easily but as it's so cheap to make a load in advance I can forgive it that. I bin the rig after each capture but you can recycle the mono into bait loops ;) I've mainly used this method of bait mounting with boilies but I know cobnut (hazelnuts) work a treat. Probably a bit easier you work with than a chickpea if allowed. For pre drilled pellets you could try some heavy mono. 60lb amnesia doubled over should do it. Some monos knot strength is quite frankly rubbish. I only trust Big Game. It's never let me down like so many lines have. Been using it for 5 years and wouldn't use or recommend anything else. I've banked 90lbs cats on 20lb big game hooklink and mainline lol. It's excellent value to (no I'm not sponsored by Berkley lol). I deadlift test my rigs using a 5kg dumbbell. Best get rig tying for your next session lol. Have fun with it, Matt.

Hello sir! Thanks for commenting. It’s always great to hear from carp anglers in the US. This is a great little rig that’s easy and cheap to make from Berkley Big Game which I know is readily available in the states. Just be sure to tie plenty up before you go fishing as if the carp are feeding you’ll get through plenty of rigs. Mono damages easily as do carp hooks so just keep on tying new ones and recycle the old ones and you can keep catching all day long if the carp are biting! Matt I am mesmerized at the techniques you guys in Europe use on Carp fishing. An I am intrigued by it. Here in North America the fishing society foolishly look down on craps and cats not realizing what an angling rush they are passing up on. I feel like if it dosen't explode on the surface North Americas are not interested. I enjoyed watching your rig setup and that English accent.😊 I would have to plan a trip down to England and try some of these techniques on the rivers. I will definitely try these rigs on my local rivers here in Canada. May have to source some of the tackle online however. This is what I love about fishing, you are always learning and trying to improve upon techniques.
Hi Andrew, Great to hear from you. I’ve had a few comments from North America on my work over the years and it’s always great to get an alternative view from over the pond. I’m sure that the lengths we go to just to catch a carp seem very strange to you! What you have to bear in mind is that carp fishing is hugely popular. My own lake is fished 24/7 for 7 months of the year by paying guests and after they’ve gone I do 40 nights per winter! This makes the carp rather hard to catch but all the more rewarding for it. You really don’t need fancy gear to catch carp. All you need is strong line (Big Game should be an off the shelf item for you). Running leads (you have leads with swivels right?) maybe a buffer bead and a plentiful supply of very sharp hooks and you’re good to go. Don’t get sucked into the “you need all this” nonsense. Thank you for the tips and links Matt! I was in my local angling store and was amazed at the pre made D-rigs they carry with spring weights and baits vs the big box stores. I remember using a running rig on a tricky water, no wedging of the lead though. Used to get screaming takes where others would get what they thought were line bites and then nothing. Definitely made a big difference. Never used the Telltale though, so simple to use as well. Great tip.

I’ve found the tell tale system a very useful way of helping guests to understand where the problem lies (generally lack of hook sharpness). @@stephenperkins6331 Hi Stephen, yeah basic stuff but a razor sharp hook is the difference between catching and blanking. I’ve used a lot of ESP hooks over the years. As an ex toolmaker I’m extremely fussy and have been hand sharpening mine for many years. I would recommend you look at the Nash pinpoint range. For me they are currently as good as it gets straight out of the packet. You still need to check every one though and some will need a lick of a hone to make them perfect. I’ve seen some rubbish over the years lol. So I’m not surprised you’re shocked. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Daryl, thanks, glad you're liking our work. The knot I'm doing in this video is the non-slip mono loop knot. For many years I was lazy. I only ever tied the figure of eight but I decided to teach myself this one this year and it's very good actually. It's strong, and it's easy to tie. I've had a few attempts at learning the perfection loop but somehow I just can't get it. I have no idea where I'm going wrong. I've seen it tied by one customer in seconds!
Funny you mention the Think Link, a friend sent me a spool to try. You’re right, it’s great if you want something really stiff for extra anti tangle purposes and I may well use it when fishing at max range. I did abrasion testing on it and it was OK but no better than the standard 25lbs (0.48) Big Game. For the short to medium range fishing I was doing at Beausoleil this spring I still prefer the 20lb (0.38) Big Game, not too supple and not too stiff.
A decent lighter is an essential part of my fishing kit mate. I’ve just bought a new one actually which makes a strong blue flame which is totally windproof. That’s the sort you need. Regards, Matt.

There’s a technique to it for sure. You just have to pull hard and use tools. A rig puller is essential and use something to wrap the mainline around (a lighter works well). If it’s still not closing down then you might be using too many turns. 3-5 covers most diameters. Good luck, Matt.
hi matt, thank you very much for this video. i also never liked these kind of lead clips, just for the reasons you showed. i have been fishing helicopter rigs for ages, ever since korda released the "helisafe", even more. I don't use lead, however, but rather heavy pebbles, which can be provided with eyelets and swivels relatively easily. when a bite occurs, the helisafe releases the heavy stone and it then remains in the water (better than lead). It is also much better for the fish if a lead or stone is not constantly knocking around its gills. Anyway, great video that explains the problem very well. greetings Maik

I’ve also not tried the Korda heli safe system although I have experimented with helicopter rigs. In my experience I find that our carp find it easier to eject helicopter rigs but they have a very hard time dealing with my running rigs so if you ever felt that the carp are getting away with it it’s certainly worth switching to see if it makes a difference. Matt, tried this rig on Sunday at our local lake, coupled with your shock and run rig, I had 12 runs in a 13 hour session, admittedly it is a runs water with carp up to 22lb, I hooked every fish, landed 6 but lost the others in a big snag in the swim, I had 3 double runs, chaos, every fish was nailed about 1/2 into the mouth, biggest fish 19lb, what a day👍

Hi.i love the simplicity of your rigs and the way you explain the rigs.can i ask what in your opinion is the benefits of using the d rig over particles?
Hi Mark, carp feed differently over particles than they do over a large spread of boilies. They will spend longer with their mouths closer to the bottom sucking and blowing the small food items about whereas with a spread of boilies the carp have to tilt down, each time and pick up one bait at a time. I like the mono D over particles because it has the ability to reset frequently without tangling. It’s possible that the rig will be picked up and ejected multiple times before a carp actually makes a mistake. Carp are picking up and ejecting our rigs all the time but we have absolutely no idea that they are doing it. A mono D is not the only rig that has the ability to reset like this of course but it’s always worked for me over particles which is why I use it. Cheers, Matt.

ive got to say matt your one of the best teacher out there as you make carp fishing so simple and how you show and explain it is easy to follow , im going to try this rig and lead set up this coming 48 session . but one question does a running lead work in chody/silty lakes or do they need to be only used on gravel/clean lake beds .

If I’m casting, and I can feel the lead down, then I’d have total confidence in a running rig. If I’m struggling to feel the drop, then I’d lean towards a helicopter. Hi Dan, thanks very much! It’s been a really interesting rig to develop. Yes, absolutely, rig safety is always no1, that’s why I’ve done the whole section at the end of the video highlighting how safe it is (time stamp 22:38). At the end of the day it’s a very similar setup to a helicopter or chod rig so if you can safely set up a chod rig then you’ll have no problem with this. I would always use barbless or crushed barbed when fishing a leader anyway just to be extra safe. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mike, that’s an excellent question that many would overlook. Sorry mate, but that’s an absolute no. It works on a leadless leader because the leader is firmly attached to the swivel. With tubing this is not the case. Even if it’s firmly attached there is a chance that the tubing will break (especially with tungsten tubing), if this happens there is a significant increase in risk to the carp safety. There’ll be a video out later today which outlines a safe way of creating a “shock and run” effect with telltale indicator very similar to the mono ‘D’ rig video, but is based on rig tubing rather than a leadless leader. Great vid. Had some fish on my home made rigs and it feels a lot better than when it was on a paid pre tied setup. My knots still needed honinghada few fail when tested before fishing but getting a lot better.

Some anglers tie themselves in knots unnecessarily while at the same time forgetting the basics that will ruin any chance they had in the first place. Hi Matt great video I am so fed up of all the standard rigs with bits metalwork and different hook links we end up buying, just joined a new lake which allows leaders so will be trying the leader but more so the rig I have d rigs in my rig box but like the fact that you use mono which we all have in a tackle bag shed etc no more hooklink expense which is a added bonus. On a slightly different subject my Pal has just brought a lake near you and I will be down that way COVID allowing as soon as possible, we are also looking to move to France and spent quite a few years on holiday in the area and may end up in that region so you never know may be we can meet up. Regarding lakes my pal Nick has brought The rushes lakes and should complete mid may and hopefully I will be out later in the year hope we can meet up I have always opened my doors to other tree surgery companies and help them as they have help me in the past it’s the same as lakes if you help each other out must be a bonus as all in the same boat. We have not found a suitable lake at the moment to be honest I did want to look at The Rushes and would have made them an offer, Nick was lucky enough to look at it before lock down and sadly losing his mum and dad within the last year his mum only a month or so ago focused his mind and he went for it good on him. There isn’t much about at the minute so if you hear of any lakes ether I would be please to hear about them. Take care Kev

I think I exchanged a few messages with the previous owner of the Rushes lake. It looked like a nice place and the guy was friendly enough, it's not too far from us. It’s a small world fishery management and what comes around goes around. You’ll always find us open and friendly. @@TheRolf88 Hi Dennis, sorry that you’re having trouble. I’ve not used any Korda boom myself but as I understand, it is a very stiff material. Korda booms are not designed to pass through a hook, they are designed to be tied from one swivel to another swivel to create a stiff section. I’m not familiar with the CW bow hook but I’ve just looked it up. I can see that it’s a straight pointed hook with a straight eye. If you try to tie this rig with a very stiff material like the Korda boom, the angles will be wrong, the gape will close way too much and the rig will not turn over. I would either change hooks to an out turned eyed pattern, or change the boom material for 20lb mono. All I’m using in the video is 20lb mono straight off one of my reels. If you want to stay with this hook you will need to mount the rig on a rig board and leave it to settle overnight to straighten it out. The ideal combination is regular mono and a straight pointed hook with an out turned eye but even that benefits from time on a rig board before you try and use it. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.
Brilliant video, just tied 3 of these to try next week in France. One thing I'm struggling with is turning the rig on the palm test. Line is exiting through the front of the hook. Is there anything to adjust to get a better turn? using 15lb GT80 mono. Thanks Matt
Hi mate, I honestly wouldn’t worry about it. My basic mono hair rig is notoriously tricky when it comes to the palm test but it’s incredibly popular and everyone that tries it tells me how well it works. It might be that the diameter of the 15lb mainline is a bit too small relative to the size of the eye of the hook you’ve chosen so that the line isn't exiting perfectly straight. One simple fix is simply to mount the rigs on a rig board overnight. This straightens the rig perfectly and you might find that it performs better on the palm test. In my own fishing I use a variety of D rigs and I have absolute confidence in them. They just work! Just bear in mind that if the lake you are going to is very rocky or filled with crays or zebra mussels then 15lb GT80 isn't going to be up for the job. I use the Nash heavy duty snag leader in 30lbs or even 40lbs when river carping for this very reason. I'm just thinking about the worst case. Any heavy mono leader material will make a great hooklink. No need for fluoro. Have a great trip! Cheers, Matt.
Morning Matt. Thought I’d let you know where I am with this rig. Due to old age 😂my family fingers aren’t as flexible as they used to be so I remembered in my shed I have a fly tying vice that does the job perfectly. My current problem is if I use a bait screw the rig doesn’t turn over. ☹️ cheers
Hi Bob, I understand the problem and I’ve come up with a new version of this rig which works much better with bait screws. I add a blow back tube to the shank of the hook to elongate the D. @@boblipscomb9 Rig tubing and blowback tubes are two different things. Kevin Nash invented blowback tubes to understand whether the carp are spitting out the rigs. I use them for a number of different rigs and find them very useful. They come in three sizes. You need to choose the size that suits your hook size. You may be able to use a short section of your rig tubing to do the same thing but that depends on many factors so I can’t advise more than that I’m afraid. Cheers, Matt.
Hi Matt, Can I sugest using flourocarbon and try adding a ring.Ring because when you cast,the boilie might get pierced by the hook if the loop its too long. This rig works best with a criticaly balanced boilie. If you are not fishing over silt keep it 15 mm. O, and use figure of 8 knot. You can use this on a helicopter rig also. Now its perfect.😁 Good luck pal!
Hi mate, thanks for your comments. Yeah, you’re right, if the loop is too long, it’s going to ruin the rig mechanics so I just keep that loop to the right size. I’ve been making these for a while now so I’ve got lots of practice lol Your design of d-rig is going to work great too, there’s just different ways of achieving the same results. I ran out of rig rings one day and started to experiment. I found I didn’t need all those specialist materials and components to make a rig that works. I’ve been fishing with it for some time and it’s just as effective as some of the other rigs I recommend for anglers at Beausoleil. I know I’m going against what the carping media bombard us with, but that’s just me lol

Hi Daniel, as an ex plastics engineer I totally understand your concern and it’s something I definitely thought about. The burning smell only lasts for a few seconds and once the plastic is fully cooled it returns to being an inert (odourless) plastic. Thousands of carp are caught every day on the cut and blob method so I don’t think there’s anything to worry about but if you don’t like the idea then I’d just use bait screws. I use the Nash 21mm metal screws most of the time for 18-24mm bottom baits and they work great. Really secure (even with nuisance species) and they can withstand the rigours of being cast a very long way. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

Hi. I just found your channel an I love it. Trying your advice also. Just did my first D rig as you described. Just wondering how it can be better than a standard hair rig? If carp is around and willing to take, i just don't get how it could refuse the bait on hair rig instead on d rig
Try not to think of one rig being better than the other, what matters is that one rig will suit a situation better than the other. For example, the mono hair, when tied in 0.40 material, is a good all rounder but if you tie it in 0.30, you’ll find the hair more prone to wrapping around the shank. A d-rig in 0.30 will remain tangle free. Good idea for a video though, thanks! Glad you're enjoying the channel 😊
Hi Gary, thanks for commenting and I’m glad that you like the video. The mono D-rig works brilliantly with bottom baits. In fact that’s mostly how I use it. I’ve also been working on some tweaked variants so keep an eye on those in the future as I’m sure we’ll do a video. For the last two years I’ve been using the Nash Chod Twisters with the mono D-rig. I cannot recommend these hooks highly enough. If you like the idea of a longer D-Rig then add a blowback tube on the shank. On the river I use 0.50 Nash Heavy Duty Mono Snag Leader in combo with a size 6. In the winter I dropped to nash 12lb Zig-Flo and a size 8 longshank with a small kicker so it’s really versatile. @@garrymobey912 I’d say yes Garry, it’s a good choice. After trying many mainlines, it ticks a lot of boxes without having any big downsides. It casts well, has good knot strength and excellent abrasion resistance. You might notice the last few yards going a bit curly after a few sessions if you aren't fishing with a leader. If it bothers you then just cut that off and get back to a nice straight bit. It’s so strong that I’m using the 12lb version for all my carp fishing nowadays. I do add 6m of heavy duty mono snag leader 30lbs (0.50) when river carping or big chuck work on the larger reservoirs. I also get customers using the 20lbs version at the lake where we have cats to 134 lbs ;)

Hi John, glad you liked the video. Yes, that's a good idea, making rigs up in advance is something I do all the time. It gets me fishing quicker 😊 I normally head out with six rigs ready to go then if I have a run of fish I can just swap rigs and get back fishing. I often attach the bait the night before. In fact it's a good idea because the bait will be slightly harder and therefore be less likely to be attacked by nuisance species. Obviously you have to be careful how you store your rigs and make sure the bait doesn't get crushed but that's why I use a large rig box. Hi Kieran, thanks for the feedback. So, you've got different factors: you have the size of the eye, the thickness of the mono and the quality of your blobbing technique. It’s pretty easy to test if it’s up to the job. Have a go with what you’ve got and then gently pull on the bait. If the blob breaks then you need to look at why.
Hi Daryl, glad you enjoyed it 👍 I’ve been fishing this setup with a light 1.1oz Korda back lead but there is absolutely no reason why you can’t fish it as a full slackline setup. Running leads and slackline were my go to method for many years. I use back leads nowadays as it’s easier to play fish over my other lines with back leads on. They are also much quicker to use, I used to spend 15 minutes sinking my slacklines. I used to believe that slacklines were more effective than back leads, but not any more. I still like the lead clip cut down for the running rig Matt, with the Fox run beads. Did you know they sit on the Fox tadpole rubbers perfectly, an ideal running rig with the bolt effect.
Hi Richard, I’ve test fished the Fox tadpole system. I was really excited by this product as I thought it would work really well. The Fox bead does work with the tadpole bead but the problem is the tadpole itself. I found that the hooklink swivel tends to pull out of the tadpole on the take and then the whole lot is sliding up the mainline. This is not what I want. I tried a few tricks to keep the tadpole and swivel in contact but I couldn't find anything that worked. Shame really. That’s why I created this system with a cut up Nash HD clip.

Hi Pieter, for products like Armourlink and Skinlink, you only need a simple over hand knot to make your loops. They're very strong, quick and easy to do and will not slip. No need for anything more complicated. Glad you enjoy the channel! Cheers, Matt
Hi David, glad you liked it 👍 I’m using the ESP Cryogen Stiff rigger pattern which is exactly the style you like i.e. chod style straight point. Any out turned eye pattern should work but I have found a straight point works exceptionally well with this rig as it turns over and catches hold so fast. I prefer barbless or crushed barbed from a carp safety point of view. Hook holds have been mega! No way they were dropping off lol. Cheers, Matt.
The running rig is basically what I used growing up with a shot on the line about 12 inches above the hook to stop the lead. Caught 1,000’s of fish of all species on all waters with this set up. Why do we complicate things so much now or are we just suckered by companies inventing new rig/lead set ups to part us from our cash 🤔
Hi Andy, thanks for commenting.Yeah, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The point is we don’t need most of these so-called innovations. We buy them because companies make us want to buy them because we believe that they will help us catch more carp. Unfortunately this is simply not the case. I know because I’ve been down that road. I’ve been helping anglers catch more carp for the last ten years at Beausoleil on a one on one basis. As a result, the older I get the simpler my rigs have become. The running rig with a split shot below the lead was how I started 37 years ago. It worked then and it works now (with light leads). For the companies that have built multi million pound businesses within the world of carp fishing, there’s not much money to be made from just hooks, mono, split shot and a few leads! Hi John, I always use size 8 swivels for the connection point between the mainline and the hooklink. In this particular rig I was using the Nash uni ring swivel (size 8).
Hi Matt, love this rig. I opted out of using on my silty venue but are there any tweaks that mean in could use it? Was thinking on a helicopter with bead up and maybe a slightly softer mono than my current 20lb amnesia, tricklink might work but essentially could a slightly softer longer version heli work in silt? Hi mate, there are a number of factors to consider really. I’ve realised that if I’m using a bait boat or row boat or bushwhacker to drop a 3oz lead very stealthily, then just about anything will work over soft silt (regardless of depth) including a stiffer mono. It’s a different matter if you are casting of course but again if it’s short range and you fish with a 1.5oz lead then a standard running/swivel lead arrangement is fine. The only time I would switch to a heli setup is if I was fishing max range into soft silt with a big lead. If the lead is plugging into the silt then yes a heli setup would be better but if I can feel some kind of drop then a regular running rig would always be my first choice. If you are looking for an alternative to Amnesia for hooklink, I’ve been playing around with Nash Zig-Flo in 12lbs. Yes I know it’s not designed for bottom baits but at £7 for 100m it’s a bargain! I’ve been amazed at how tough and strong it is and they now do it in a 15lbs version. I’ve had loads of 30s, 40s and a couple of 50s on it this year so you really don’t have to worry about the strength (just test your knots are up to snuff obviously). If you want to stiffen up the first few inches check out the Nash Tungsten XL anti tangle sleeves. These are super heavy and will really help to keep a lighter hooklink tangle free even at max range when you are just firing the lead into the water without feathering. Hope that helps. @@matthewcollinsangler lovely thanks for this mate :) I quite often casting at fizz or shows on this venue and really can't guarantee a drop hence the heli. Even with a 2oz lead it's stuck initially on retrieve so it's definitely soft and/or deep. If I was to use a leadclip or inline would have to go long and softish so reasoned it would be a.potential tangle fest Appreciate the response
@@Kb11466 Ah right, got you. Yes I’d try 12” of the Zig-Flo with a long anti tangle sleeve. Add a little PVA stick of crumb to aid separation and slow it down through the water and you’ll be fine mate. It should work with a basic running lead setup or a heli setup. I’m advising anyone that will listen not to use lead clips anymore 😊 The carp sussed them years ago. Heli’s are okay because the top bead slides up the line so it’s harder for the carp to use the lead against you but I would still advocate a simple running rig as my go-to approach in any situation (apart from heavy weed). Interesting point about the lead clip, I always use them semi fixed anyway so they get pricked then are essentially on a running rig as it disconnects from qc swivel. Think that's what you're getting at
@@Kb11466 Okay cool. Adding a little shock effect to a running rig setup is something I’ve been doing for many years but this summer I noticed the technique became less effective at our lake. I started experimenting with pure running rigs which is what I used last summer during Covid. The switch worked and so I’ve moved all our guests over to pure running rigs. The results have been really positive so I’d seriously consider going old school and using a pure ledger rig. They just can’t handle them and by the time they realise something is wrong it’s too late and game on for you. Give them a try. I’m sure you’ll see positive results. Cheers, Matt.
Thanks for the excellent presentation. I’m fairly new to carp fishing and unsure how you are using the tapered beads. They appear to grip one way but are free running the other way i.e. when the lead drops back after the fish is caught. Which way round do you put the bead on. Big hole towards the lead or towards the reel?
Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback. I completely understand that this can seem a little confusing but let me try and explain. I mount the lower bead with the small hole towards the lead and the larger hole facing outwards towards the mainline. This makes it easier for the bead to ride up the leadless leader and off the mainline knot in the case of mainline failure. The upper bead is orientating the same way as this sits above the leader. If you put it the other way round, there is a chance that the top bead will fit itself over the leader knot and although it’s not the end of the world I just prefer it to sit loosely. The lower bead is able to grip tighter when it’s next to the lead as this is where the 35mm spliced section of the leader is. Any spliced leader will have a slight difference in diameter between the spliced section and the unspliced section. This is what gives it the stop/go effect when it leaves the spliced section. It is very, very important that the beads move easily on the unspliced section. If they grip too tightly it’s dangerous. Don’t try and fit beads on rig tubing to achieve the same effect. If you're new to carp fishing, I wouldn't even worry about leaders and beads at this stage. Why not use the rig tubing version that I explain at 21:00. It’s even safer, can be used anywhere, is easy to set up and still achieves the same result and gives you an indication to tell you if you’ve been done. However, I must admit I was going to set up your rig tube version tomorrow for a non-local venue session on Thursday. My local lake is very silty everywhere, no hard spots, so a silt beating set up would be greatly appreciated. Helicopter rigs are my only option at present. Thank you again.
@@brianhowe982 Personally I don't use helicopter rigs. I'd prefer to find a firmer spot if possible. I'd setup a leading rod and have a cast about to find the firmer areas of silt. @@brianhowe982 I’d concentrate on any area where you’ve seen carp activity. I’d walk the margins and have a donk about close in too. If you can access a margin that does not see much foot traffic then that’s always a good place to start. Also South or West facing margins tend to be firmer than North or East. Rather than just casting in and dragging back, I like to cast, stop the lead and feel the drop. If it smacks down nice and firm you've found a decent area! Good luck, Matt.
The 20lb version now is 0.38mm? just checking for some as a fluorocarbon alternative, but there website says 15b is 0.38 and 20lb is 0.45. How abrasion resistant is the big game compared with esp ghost of the same diameter?? nice simple rig, will try it.
Hi mate, Berkley has made some changes recently. In Europe, the 20lb used to be 0.45 and the 15lb was 0.38 (same as the states). Now in Europe the 20lb is 0.38 and the 15lb is 0.34 so you have to check carefully what’s on the label. With the 20lbs 0.38 version, using the trilene knot for the leader, I can get 8kg on a deadlift test. I test my rigs to 5kg and had no failures on the loop knot or knotless knot. I can’t fault the Big Game on abrasion resistance. Our guests at Beausoleil have been using the 25lbs since 2018 and we’ve seen a massive difference in the number of 100lbs+ catfish landed. We only get a small number of cut offs per year now, it used to be several per week. I’ve just respooled with 20lb in 0.38 and last week I banked an 85lb catfish after a 30mn fight on the Big Game hooklink/mainline combo. Obviously the hooklink was ruined but it didn't fail. I'm not familiar with ESP Ghost but I'd trust Big Game over any other mono. The 0.38 big game should be good enough for most situations. I’ve tested about 15 different monos over the last few years, different brands and prices, and the Big Game comes out on top. If you give it a go, let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

although i dont doubt how effective this is, i was wondering what your thoughts are on what happens when a fish approaches the bait from the lead direction, with the rig being stiff and there being no hinge by the hook eye ive always wondered if it would be as effective ?
I understand where you’re coming from but for me, it’s just not an issue. The fact that there’s no hinge by the hook doesn’t matter at all. What I want is for the rig to turn over really fast and for the lead system to stop the carp from using the weight of the lead to spit it, and that’s what’s driven the design of this rig. I’ve been fishing my lake Beausoleil for 10 years and I’ve been able to experiment a lot during this time. All I can say is that simple rigs work really well. @@matthewcollinsangler thanks for the reply !, everything about this rigs screams bites, i used to use 6 inch amnesia hook links in the 90s to great success so have great confidence in the stiff rigs but could never get me head around how they were hooking fish that aproached from the blind spot. this video was extremely helpful as im fishing a french water in a few weeks that has huge fish, but only alows running leads. I will be trying this version of this rig there from day 1 for sure ! like i said before im just still curious as to what happens when they try suck that bait in from tthe angle that should technicaly leave the hook upsidedown?
@@lordamercy5609 Are you fishing Moorlands by any chance? If so, Keith might not like the beads I add to my setup (I’m just speculating). Wherever you're fishing, just clear the setup with them in advance. It will score you points and make their job easier lol. There may well be a point of angle of approach where this rig doesn't work but I’m not bothered in the slightest. Carp visit our spots and spit out rigs all the time. Even the best rigs with the sharpest hooks are ejected. What really matters is getting a good rig on a spot where carp and willing to feed, with the sharpest hook possible. @@matthewcollinsangler i make you right there matt. maybe theres a 25 percent chance it may not fish completely how you want it due to the fishes angle of approach, but the real important part is having it presented right after the cast 100 percent of the time and to reset itself while they are feeding 100 percent of the time tangle free which this would appear to do. and yes ill be doing away with any beads and fishing straight forward running leads or beadless helicopter setup at moorlands. this was a very helpful and well put together video and i appreciate the replies, youre lake has been on my list a while! thanks again , Dave

Hi Bob, I just don't need anything stiffer, mono makes great hook links. If I need anything stiffer, I use thicker mono like the Nash heavy duty snag leader in 30lbs (0.50) which makes very robust hooklink for a fraction of the cost of fluoro.
Hi Matt, If i am using the rig tubing set up of this,do i need to put a no trace bead on the mainline above the rig tubing if i am using a back lead,as the current water i am fishing on is quite shallow,just as s footnote various lines have no memory so some do not work as rigs,experiment first until you find one that works,i find all of your vlogs to be superb
Hi mate, as far as I understand, no-trace beads are not meant to be used with rig tubing, they’re designed for lead free leaders. I don’t use no-trace beads but I would be concerned about using them with rig tubing. If you want to use a bead above the tubing to stop the back lead interfering with the lead, then I’d put a standard bore bead on the mainline (don’t put it on to the tubing). Hi Luke, I know the name Sensas, they do match fishing bait right? Didn't know they did mainline. The colour makes no difference whatsoever, that’s just marketing nonsense lol. Knot strength is what matters. Ignore what it says on the tin, diameter is what’s important here. As a general rule, for general carp fishing you want to use mono of 0.35mm to 0.45mm diameter. So if your line meets that criteria then sure, use it. It will work great :) Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

After seeing your absolutely stunning presented videos, i swapped to the mono d rig, self sharpened size 6 hooks and attached the bait via mono loop...stunning hookholds, caught 4 fish in one night from a spot i blanked the last 2 years.

Hi mate, okay cool. Don’t forget to take plenty of chod twisters with you. Each angler gets through 2-3 packets a week here at Beausoleil. New hook every cast and have new ones tied and ready to fly all the time. It’s the best way of keeping the runs coming but keeps costs down as you only use mono. Have a great trip! Matt.

Hi Matt I've had a successful 48hr six fish nothing massive,up to twenty's .I was getting the rigs picked up by nuisance nuisance fish so changed to a fluorocarbon rig like yours as it resets.In another one of your video's if you use a inturned eye the angle the material leaves the eye is too aggressive.I tryed the rig with Nash claw hooks fishing a snowman bait .It literally nailed every run bang in the bottom lip.

Hi Matt. I tied up 10 of these rigs for use last Sunday, as they really only work once or twice afte hooking and I have to say they worked a treat. All my hook holds were as you stated in the video, bottom lip and well in. The only thing I found hard was attaching the bait using mono, the lake I was on 'Mathern Mill' nr Chepstow and does not allot boilies so I use Chick Peas which I tested the night before worked fine simply being pierced with two strands of mono and burnt the tag end. Later in the session I swapped over to drilled Robin Red pellets which work a treat, but the bigger ones have a bigger drilled hole so had to pass the mono around twice, not the end of the world but nice to keep the mono unseen as possible... Finally as everybody will know knot strength is the thing with these rigs, I had one go south on me even though I'd tested it the night before, luckily not with a carp on! probably better to tie these on the bank, but with my eyesight these days I have to do them in advance :-). Overall a really great rig which I can adapt to the various baits I use.... Nice one Matt
Hi Malcolm, thanks so much for your feedback on the rig. I'm delighted it worked for you. You're right, the downside with the mono is it damages easily but as it's so cheap to make a load in advance I can forgive it that. I bin the rig after each capture but you can recycle the mono into bait loops ;) I've mainly used this method of bait mounting with boilies but I know cobnut (hazelnuts) work a treat. Probably a bit easier you work with than a chickpea if allowed. For pre drilled pellets you could try some heavy mono. 60lb amnesia doubled over should do it. Some monos knot strength is quite frankly rubbish. I only trust Big Game. It's never let me down like so many lines have. Been using it for 5 years and wouldn't use or recommend anything else. I've banked 90lbs cats on 20lb big game hooklink and mainline lol. It's excellent value to (no I'm not sponsored by Berkley lol). I deadlift test my rigs using a 5kg dumbbell. Best get rig tying for your next session lol. Have fun with it, Matt.

Hello sir! Thanks for commenting. It’s always great to hear from carp anglers in the US. This is a great little rig that’s easy and cheap to make from Berkley Big Game which I know is readily available in the states. Just be sure to tie plenty up before you go fishing as if the carp are feeding you’ll get through plenty of rigs. Mono damages easily as do carp hooks so just keep on tying new ones and recycle the old ones and you can keep catching all day long if the carp are biting! Matt I am mesmerized at the techniques you guys in Europe use on Carp fishing. An I am intrigued by it. Here in North America the fishing society foolishly look down on craps and cats not realizing what an angling rush they are passing up on. I feel like if it dosen't explode on the surface North Americas are not interested. I enjoyed watching your rig setup and that English accent.😊 I would have to plan a trip down to England and try some of these techniques on the rivers. I will definitely try these rigs on my local rivers here in Canada. May have to source some of the tackle online however. This is what I love about fishing, you are always learning and trying to improve upon techniques.
Hi Andrew, Great to hear from you. I’ve had a few comments from North America on my work over the years and it’s always great to get an alternative view from over the pond. I’m sure that the lengths we go to just to catch a carp seem very strange to you! What you have to bear in mind is that carp fishing is hugely popular. My own lake is fished 24/7 for 7 months of the year by paying guests and after they’ve gone I do 40 nights per winter! This makes the carp rather hard to catch but all the more rewarding for it. You really don’t need fancy gear to catch carp. All you need is strong line (Big Game should be an off the shelf item for you). Running leads (you have leads with swivels right?) maybe a buffer bead and a plentiful supply of very sharp hooks and you’re good to go. Don’t get sucked into the “you need all this” nonsense. I remember using a running rig on a tricky water, no wedging of the lead though. Used to get screaming takes where others would get what they thought were line bites and then nothing. Definitely made a big difference. Never used the Telltale though, so simple to use as well. Great tip.

I’ve found the tell tale system a very useful way of helping guests to understand where the problem lies (generally lack of hook sharpness). If you’ve already got an ‘A’ game then a simple running lead setup is all you need. In my experience it will outfish a standard semi fixed setup every day of the week. All the best with your fishing. @@stephenperkins6331 Hi Stephen, yeah basic stuff but a razor sharp hook is the difference between catching and blanking. I’ve used a lot of ESP hooks over the years. As an ex toolmaker I’m extremely fussy and have been hand sharpening mine for many years. I would recommend you look at the Nash pinpoint range. For me they are currently as good as it gets straight out of the packet. You still need to check every one though and some will need a lick of a hone to make them perfect. I’ve seen some rubbish over the years lol. So I’m not surprised you’re shocked. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Daryl, thanks, glad you're liking our work. The knot I'm doing in this video is the non-slip mono loop knot. For many years I was lazy. I only ever tied the figure of eight but I decided to teach myself this one this year and it's very good actually. It's strong, and it's easy to tie. I've had a few attempts at learning the perfection loop but somehow I just can't get it. I have no idea where I'm going wrong. I've seen it tied by one customer in seconds!
Funny you mention the Think Link, a friend sent me a spool to try. You’re right, it’s great if you want something really stiff for extra anti tangle purposes and I may well use it when fishing at max range. I did abrasion testing on it and it was OK but no better than the standard 25lbs (0.48) Big Game. For the short to medium range fishing I was doing at Beausoleil this spring I still prefer the 20lb (0.38) Big Game, not too supple and not too stiff.

Fully closing a knot with mono is the bane of my fishing
There’s a technique to it for sure. You just have to pull hard and use tools. A rig puller is essential and use something to wrap the mainline around (a lighter works well). If it’s still not closing down then you might be using too many turns. 3-5 covers most diameters. Good luck, Matt.

thank you very much for this video. i also never liked these kind of lead clips, just for the reasons you showed. i have been fishing helicopter rigs for ages, ever since korda released the "helisafe", even more. I don't use lead, however, but rather heavy pebbles, which can be provided with eyelets and swivels relatively easily. when a bite occurs, the helisafe releases the heavy stone and it then remains in the water (better than lead). It is also much better for the fish if a lead or stone is not constantly knocking around its gills. Anyway, great video that explains the problem very well.

Hi Maik, thanks very much for commenting and sharing your experiences. I’ve not tried those pebble weights myself as I fish running rigs most of the time. I’ve also not tried the Korda heli safe system although I have experimented with helicopter rigs. In my experience I find that our carp find it easier to eject helicopter rigs but they have a very hard time dealing with my running rigs so if you ever felt that the carp are getting away with it it’s certainly worth switching to see if it makes a difference. Matt, tried this rig on Sunday at our local lake, coupled with your shock and run rig, I had 12 runs in a 13 hour session, admittedly it is a runs water with carp up to 22lb, I hooked every fish, landed 6 but lost the others in a big snag in the swim, I had 3 double runs, chaos, every fish was nailed about 1/2 into the mouth, biggest fish 19lb, what a day👍

Hi.i love the simplicity of your rigs and the way you explain the rigs.can i ask what in your opinion is the benefits of using the d rig over particles?
Hi Mark, carp feed differently over particles than they do over a large spread of boilies. They will spend longer with their mouths closer to the bottom sucking and blowing the small food items about whereas with a spread of boilies the carp have to tilt down, each time and pick up one bait at a time. I like the mono D over particles because it has the ability to reset frequently without tangling. It’s possible that the rig will be picked up and ejected multiple times before a carp actually makes a mistake. Carp are picking up and ejecting our rigs all the time but we have absolutely no idea that they are doing it. A mono D is not the only rig that has the ability to reset like this of course but it’s always worked for me over particles which is why I use it. Cheers, Matt.

ive got to say matt your one of the best teacher out there as you make carp fishing so simple and how you show and explain it is easy to follow , im going to try this rig and lead set up this coming 48 session . but one question does a running lead work in chody/silty lakes or do they need to be only used on gravel/clean lake beds .

If I’m casting, and I can feel the lead down, then I’d have total confidence in a running rig. If I’m struggling to feel the drop, then I’d lean towards a helicopter. Hi Dan, thanks very much! It’s been a really interesting rig to develop. Yes, absolutely, rig safety is always no1, that’s why I’ve done the whole section at the end of the video highlighting how safe it is (time stamp 22:38). At the end of the day it’s a very similar setup to a helicopter or chod rig so if you can safely set up a chod rig then you’ll have no problem with this. I would always use barbless or crushed barbed when fishing a leader anyway just to be extra safe. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mike, that’s an excellent question that many would overlook. Sorry mate, but that’s an absolute no. It works on a leadless leader because the leader is firmly attached to the swivel. With tubing this is not the case. Even if it’s firmly attached there is a chance that the tubing will break (especially with tungsten tubing), if this happens there is a significant increase in risk to the carp safety. There’ll be a video out later today which outlines a safe way of creating a “shock and run” effect with telltale indicator very similar to the mono ‘D’ rig video, but is based on rig tubing rather than a leadless leader. Great vid. Had some fish on my home made rigs and it feels a lot better than when it was on a paid pre tied setup. My knots still needed honinghada few fail when tested before fishing but getting a lot better.

Some anglers tie themselves in knots unnecessarily while at the same time forgetting the basics that will ruin any chance they had in the first place. Hi Matt great video I am so fed up of all the standard rigs with bits metalwork and different hook links we end up buying, just joined a new lake which allows leaders so will be trying the leader but more so the rig I have d rigs in my rig box but like the fact that you use mono which we all have in a tackle bag shed etc no more hooklink expense which is a added bonus. On a slightly different subject my Pal has just brought a lake near you and I will be down that way COVID allowing as soon as possible, we are also looking to move to France and spent quite a few years on holiday in the area and may end up in that region so you never know may be we can meet up. It’s unnecessary, bad for your wallet, bad for the carp and bad for the environment. Regarding lakes my pal Nick has brought The rushes lakes and should complete mid may and hopefully I will be out later in the year hope we can meet up I have always opened my doors to other tree surgery companies and help them as they have help me in the past it’s the same as lakes if you help each other out must be a bonus as all in the same boat. We have not found a suitable lake at the moment to be honest I did want to look at The Rushes and would have made them an offer, Nick was lucky enough to look at it before lock down and sadly losing his mum and dad within the last year his mum only a month or so ago focused his mind and he went for it good on him. I tried to this tie this one Matthew with Korda boom and a CW bow hook, but It did not flip with this combi.
@@TheRolf88 Hi Dennis, sorry that you’re having trouble. I’ve not used any Korda boom myself but as I understand, it is a very stiff material. Korda booms are not designed to pass through a hook, they are designed to be tied from one swivel to another swivel to create a stiff section. I’m not familiar with the CW bow hook but I’ve just looked it up. I can see that it’s a straight pointed hook with a straight eye.
If you try to tie this rig with a very stiff material like the Korda boom, the angles will be wrong, the gape will close way too much and the rig will not turn over. I would either change hooks to an out turned eyed pattern, or change the boom material for 20lb mono. All I’m using in the video is 20lb mono straight off one of my reels. If you want to stay with this hook you will need to mount the rig on a rig board and leave it to settle overnight to straighten it out. The ideal combination is regular mono and a straight pointed hook with an out turned eye but even that benefits from time on a rig board before you try and use it. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.
Brilliant video, just tied 3 of these to try next week in France. One thing I'm struggling with is turning the rig on the palm test. Line is exiting through the front of the hook. Is there anything to adjust to get a better turn? using 15lb GT80 mono. Thanks Matt
Hi mate, I honestly wouldn’t worry about it. My basic mono hair rig is notoriously tricky when it comes to the palm test but it’s incredibly popular and everyone that tries it tells me how well it works. It might be that the diameter of the 15lb mainline is a bit too small relative to the size of the eye of the hook you’ve chosen so that the line isn't exiting perfectly straight. One simple fix is simply to mount the rigs on a rig board overnight. This straightens the rig perfectly and you might find that it performs better on the palm test. In my own fishing I use a variety of D rigs and I have absolute confidence in them. They just work! Just bear in mind that if the lake you are going to is very rocky or filled with crays or zebra mussels then 15lb GT80 isn't going to be up for the job. I use the Nash heavy duty snag leader in 30lbs or even 40lbs when river carping for this very reason. Morning Matt. Thought I’d let you know where I am with this rig. Due to old age 😂my family fingers aren’t as flexible as they used to be so I remembered in my shed I have a fly tying vice that does the job perfectly. My current problem is if I use a bait screw the rig doesn’t turn over. ☹️ cheers

Hi Bob, I understand the problem and I’ve come up with a new version of this rig which works much better with bait screws. I add a blow back tube to the shank of the hook to elongate the D. @@boblipscomb9 Rig tubing and blowback tubes are two different things. Kevin Nash invented blowback tubes to understand whether the carp are spitting out the rigs. I use them for a number of different rigs and find them very useful. They come in three sizes. You need to choose the size that suits your hook size. You may be able to use a short section of your rig tubing to do the same thing but that depends on many factors so I can’t advise more than that I’m afraid. Cheers, Matt.

Can I sugest using flourocarbon and try adding a ring.Ring because when you cast,the boilie might get pierced by the hook if the loop its too long.
This rig works best with a criticaly balanced boilie.
If you are not fishing over silt keep it 15 mm.
O, and use figure of 8 knot.
You can use this on a helicopter rig also.
Now its perfect.😁

Hi mate, thanks for your comments. Yeah, you’re right, if the loop is too long, it’s going to ruin the rig mechanics so I just keep that loop to the right size. I’ve been making these for a while now so I’ve got lots of practice lol Your design of d-rig is going to work great too, there’s just different ways of achieving the same results. I ran out of rig rings one day and started to experiment. I found I didn’t need all those specialist materials and components to make a rig that works. I’ve been fishing with it for some time and it’s just as effective as some of the other rigs I recommend for anglers at Beausoleil. I know I’m going against what the carping media bombard us with, but that’s just me lol

Hi Daniel, as an ex plastics engineer I totally understand your concern and it’s something I definitely thought about. The burning smell only lasts for a few seconds and once the plastic is fully cooled it returns to being an inert (odourless) plastic. Thousands of carp are caught every day on the cut and blob method so I don’t think there’s anything to worry about but if you don’t like the idea then I’d just use bait screws. I use the Nash 21mm metal screws most of the time for 18-24mm bottom baits and they work great. Really secure (even with nuisance species) and they can withstand the rigours of being cast a very long way. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

Try not to think of one rig being better than the other, what matters is that one rig will suit a situation better than the other. For example, the mono hair, when tied in 0.40 material, is a good all rounder but if you tie it in 0.30, you’ll find the hair more prone to wrapping around the shank. A d-rig in 0.30 will remain tangle free. Good idea for a video though, thanks! Glad you're enjoying the channel 😊

Hi Gary, thanks for commenting and I’m glad that you like the video. The mono D-rig works brilliantly with bottom baits. In fact that’s mostly how I use it. I’ve also been working on some tweaked variants so keep an eye on those in the future as I’m sure we’ll do a video. For the last two years I’ve been using the Nash Chod Twisters with the mono D-rig. I cannot recommend these hooks highly enough. If you like the idea of a longer D-Rig then add a blowback tube on the shank. On the river I use 0.50 Nash Heavy Duty Mono Snag Leader in combo with a size 6. In the winter I dropped to nash 12lb Zig-Flo and a size 8 longshank with a small kicker so it’s really versatile. @@garrymobey912 I’d say yes Garry, it’s a good choice. After trying many mainlines, it ticks a lot of boxes without having any big downsides. It casts well, has good knot strength and excellent abrasion resistance. You might notice the last few yards going a bit curly after a few sessions if you aren't fishing with a leader. If it bothers you then just cut that off and get back to a nice straight bit. It’s so strong that I’m using the 12lb version for all my carp fishing nowadays. I do add 6m of heavy duty mono snag leader 30lbs (0.50) when river carping or big chuck work on the larger reservoirs. I also get customers using the 20lbs version at the lake where we have cats to 134 lbs ;)

Hi John, glad you liked the video. Yes, that's a good idea, making rigs up in advance is something I do all the time. It gets me fishing quicker 😊 I normally head out with six rigs ready to go then if I have a run of fish I can just swap rigs and get back fishing. I often attach the bait the night before. In fact it's a good idea because the bait will be slightly harder and therefore be less likely to be attacked by nuisance species. Obviously you have to be careful how you store your rigs and make sure the bait doesn't get crushed but that's why I use a large rig box. Hi Kieran, thanks for the feedback. So, you've got different factors: you have the size of the eye, the thickness of the mono and the quality of your blobbing technique. It’s pretty easy to test if it’s up to the job. Have a go with what you’ve got and then gently pull on the bait. If the blob breaks then you need to look at why.

Hi Daryl, glad you enjoyed it 👍 I’ve been fishing this setup with a light 1.1oz Korda back lead but there is absolutely no reason why you can’t fish it as a full slackline setup. Running leads and slackline were my go to method for many years. I use back leads nowadays as it’s easier to play fish over my other lines with back leads on. They are also much quicker to use, I used to spend 15 minutes sinking my slacklines. I used to believe that slacklines were more effective than back leads, but not any more. I still like the lead clip cut down for the running rig Matt, with the Fox run beads. Did you know they sit on the Fox tadpole rubbers perfectly, an ideal running rig with the bolt effect.
Hi Richard, I’ve test fished the Fox tadpole system. I was really excited by this product as I thought it would work really well. The Fox bead does work with the tadpole bead but the problem is the tadpole itself. I found that the hooklink swivel tends to pull out of the tadpole on the take and then the whole lot is sliding up the mainline. This is not what I want. I tried a few tricks to keep the tadpole and swivel in contact but I couldn't find anything that worked. Shame really. That’s why I created this system with a cut up Nash HD clip.

Hi Pieter, for products like Armourlink and Skinlink, you only need a simple over hand knot to make your loops. They're very strong, quick and easy to do and will not slip. No need for anything more complicated. Glad you enjoy the channel! Cheers, Matt

Hi David, glad you liked it 👍 I’m using the ESP Cryogen Stiff rigger pattern which is exactly the style you like i.e. chod style straight point. Any out turned eye pattern should work but I have found a straight point works exceptionally well with this rig as it turns over and catches hold so fast. I prefer barbless or crushed barbed from a carp safety point of view. Hook holds have been mega! No way they were dropping off lol. Cheers, Matt.

The running rig is basically what I used growing up with a shot on the line about 12 inches above the hook to stop the lead. Caught 1,000’s of fish of all species on all waters with this set up. Why do we complicate things so much now or are we just suckered by companies inventing new rig/lead set ups to part us from our cash 🤔
Hi Andy, thanks for commenting.Yeah, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The point is we don’t need most of these so-called innovations. We buy them because companies make us want to buy them because we believe that they will help us catch more carp. Unfortunately this is simply not the case. I know because I’ve been down that road. I’ve been helping anglers catch more carp for the last ten years at Beausoleil on a one on one basis. As a result, the older I get the simpler my rigs have become. The running rig with a split shot below the lead was how I started 37 years ago. It worked then and it works now (with light leads). For the companies that have built multi million pound businesses within the world of carp fishing, there’s not much money to be made from just hooks, mono, split shot and a few leads! This year I’ll be making some more videos and going even simpler. Really paring things down to the core. I hope you continue to follow my journey. All the best with your fishing cheers, Matt.

Hi John, I always use size 8 swivels for the connection point between the mainline and the hooklink. In this particular rig I was using the Nash uni ring swivel (size 8).
Hi Matt, love this rig. I opted out of using on my silty venue but are there any tweaks that mean in could use it? Was thinking on a helicopter with bead up and maybe a slightly softer mono than my current 20lb amnesia, tricklink might work but essentially could a slightly softer longer version heli work in silt?

Hi mate, there are a number of factors to consider really. I’ve realised that if I’m using a bait boat or row boat or bushwhacker to drop a 3oz lead very stealthily, then just about anything will work over soft silt (regardless of depth) including a stiffer mono. It’s a different matter if you are casting of course but again if it’s short range and you fish with a 1.5oz lead then a standard running/swivel lead arrangement is fine. The only time I would switch to a heli setup is if I was fishing max range into soft silt with a big lead. If the lead is plugging into the silt then yes a heli setup would be better but if I can feel some kind of drop then a regular running rig would always be my first choice. If you are looking for an alternative to Amnesia for hooklink, I’ve been playing around with Nash Zig-Flo in 12lbs. Yes I know it’s not designed for bottom baits but at £7 for 100m it’s a bargain! I’ve been amazed at how tough and strong it is and they now do it in a 15lbs version. I’ve had loads of 30s, 40s and a couple of 50s on it this year so you really don’t have to worry about the strength (just test your knots are up to snuff obviously). If you want to stiffen up the first few inches check out the Nash Tungsten XL anti tangle sleeves. These are super heavy and will really help to keep a lighter hooklink tangle free even at max range when you are just firing the lead into the water without feathering. Hope that helps.

@@matthewcollinsangler lovely thanks for this mate :) I quite often casting at fizz or shows on this venue and really can't guarantee a drop hence the heli. Even with a 2oz lead it's stuck initially on retrieve so it's definitely soft and/or deep. If I was to use a leadclip or inline would have to go long and softish so reasoned it would be a.potential tangle fest

@@Kb11466 Ah right, got you. Yes I’d try 12” of the Zig-Flo with a long anti tangle sleeve. Add a little PVA stick of crumb to aid separation and slow it down through the water and you’ll be fine mate. It should work with a basic running lead setup or a heli setup. I’m advising anyone that will listen not to use lead clips anymore 😊 The carp sussed them years ago. Heli’s are okay because the top bead slides up the line so it’s harder for the carp to use the lead against you but I would still advocate a simple running rig as my go-to approach in any situation (apart from heavy weed). Interesting point about the lead clip, I always use them semi fixed anyway so they get pricked then are essentially on a running rig as it disconnects from qc swivel. Think that's what you're getting at
@@Kb11466 Okay cool. Adding a little shock effect to a running rig setup is something I’ve been doing for many years but this summer I noticed the technique became less effective at our lake. I started experimenting with pure running rigs which is what I used last summer during Covid. The switch worked and so I’ve moved all our guests over to pure running rigs. The results have been really positive so I’d seriously consider going old school and using a pure ledger rig. They just can’t handle them and by the time they realise something is wrong it’s too late and game on for you. Give them a try. I’m sure you’ll see positive results. Cheers, Matt.
Thanks for the excellent presentation. I’m fairly new to carp fishing and unsure how you are using the tapered beads. They appear to grip one way but are free running the other way i.e. when the lead drops back after the fish is caught. Which way round do you put the bead on. Big hole towards the lead or towards the reel?
Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback. I completely understand that this can seem a little confusing but let me try and explain. I mount the lower bead with the small hole towards the lead and the larger hole facing outwards towards the mainline. This makes it easier for the bead to ride up the leadless leader and off the mainline knot in the case of mainline failure. The upper bead is orientating the same way as this sits above the leader. If you put it the other way round, there is a chance that the top bead will fit itself over the leader knot and although it’s not the end of the world I just prefer it to sit loosely. The lower bead is able to grip tighter when it’s next to the lead as this is where the 35mm spliced section of the leader is. Any spliced leader will have a slight difference in diameter between the spliced section and the unspliced section. This is what gives it the stop/go effect when it leaves the spliced section. It is very, very important that the beads move easily on the unspliced section. If they grip too tightly it’s dangerous. Don’t try and fit beads on rig tubing to achieve the same effect.
If you're new to carp fishing, I wouldn't even worry about leaders and beads at this stage. Why not use the rig tubing version that I explain at 21:00. It’s even safer, can be used anywhere, is easy to set up and still achieves the same result and gives you an indication to tell you if you’ve been done. Matthew Collins Thank you Matt for your prompt response. I haven’t tried leaders yet, lead leaders are banned on most places I go. However, I must admit I was going to set up your rig tube version tomorrow for a non-local venue session on Thursday.
My local lake is very silty everywhere, no hard spots, so a silt beating set up would be greatly appreciated. Helicopter rigs are my only option at present.

@@brianhowe982 Personally I don't use helicopter rigs. I'd prefer to find a firmer spot if possible. I'd setup a leading rod and have a cast about to find the firmer areas of silt. @@brianhowe982 I’d concentrate on any area where you’ve seen carp activity. I’d walk the margins and have a donk about close in too. If you can access a margin that does not see much foot traffic then that’s always a good place to start. Also South or West facing margins tend to be firmer than North or East. Rather than just casting in and dragging back, I like to cast, stop the lead and feel the drop. If it smacks down nice and firm you've found a decent area! Good luck, Matt.

The 20lb version now is 0.38mm? just checking for some as a fluorocarbon alternative, but there website says 15b is 0.38 and 20lb is 0.45. How abrasion resistant is the big game compared with esp ghost of the same diameter?? nice simple rig, will try it.
Hi mate, Berkley has made some changes recently. In Europe, the 20lb used to be 0.45 and the 15lb was 0.38 (same as the states). Now in Europe the 20lb is 0.38 and the 15lb is 0.34 so you have to check carefully what’s on the label. With the 20lbs 0.38 version, using the trilene knot for the leader, I can get 8kg on a deadlift test. I test my rigs to 5kg and had no failures on the loop knot or knotless knot. I can’t fault the Big Game on abrasion resistance. Our guests at Beausoleil have been using the 25lbs since 2018 and we’ve seen a massive difference in the number of 100lbs+ catfish landed. We only get a small number of cut offs per year now, it used to be several per week. I’ve just respooled with 20lb in 0.38 and last week I banked an 85lb catfish after a 30mn fight on the Big Game hooklink/mainline combo. Obviously the hooklink was ruined but it didn't fail. I'm not familiar with ESP Ghost but I'd trust Big Game over any other mono. The 0.38 big game should be good enough for most situations. I’ve tested about 15 different monos over the last few years, different brands and prices, and the Big Game comes out on top. If you give it a go, let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

So my rig ends up at 7-8" inches long so yeah it will work great. I haven't really tried it shorter than that as it was working great as is (not sure why you thought my rig it was longer?). although i dont doubt how effective this is, i was wondering what your thoughts are on what happens when a fish approaches the bait from the lead direction, with the rig being stiff and there being no hinge by the hook eye ive always wondered if it would be as effective ?
I understand where you’re coming from but for me, it’s just not an issue. The fact that there’s no hinge by the hook doesn’t matter at all. What I want is for the rig to turn over really fast and for the lead system to stop the carp from using the weight of the lead to spit it, and that’s what’s driven the design of this rig. I’ve been fishing my lake Beausoleil for 10 years and I’ve been able to experiment a lot during this time. All I can say is that simple rigs work really well. If you give it a try, let me know :)

@@matthewcollinsangler thanks for the reply !, everything about this rigs screams bites, i used to use 6 inch amnesia hook links in the 90s to great success so have great confidence in the stiff rigs but could never get me head around how they were hooking fish that aproached from the blind spot.
this video was extremely helpful as im fishing a french water in a few weeks that has huge fish, but only alows running leads.
I will be trying this version of this rig there from day 1 for sure ! like i said before im just still curious as to what happens when they try suck that bait in from tthe angle that should technicaly leave the hook upsidedown?
@@lordamercy5609 Are you fishing Moorlands by any chance? If so, Keith might not like the beads I add to my setup (I’m just speculating). Wherever you're fishing, just clear the setup with them in advance. It will score you points and make their job easier lol. There may well be a point of angle of approach where this rig doesn't work but I’m not bothered in the slightest. Carp visit our spots and spit out rigs all the time. Even the best rigs with the sharpest hooks are ejected. What really matters is getting a good rig on a spot where carp and willing to feed, with the sharpest hook possible. After that, it’s in the lap of the carp gods! Best of luck with it, Matt.
@@matthewcollinsangler i make you right there matt. maybe theres a 25 percent chance it may not fish completely how you want it due to the fishes angle of approach, but the real important part is having it presented right after the cast 100 percent of the time and to reset itself while they are feeding 100 percent of the time tangle free which this would appear to do. and yes ill be doing away with any beads and fishing straight forward running leads or beadless helicopter setup at moorlands.

Hi Bob, I just don't need anything stiffer, mono makes great hook links. If I need anything stiffer, I use thicker mono like the Nash heavy duty snag leader in 30lbs (0.50) which makes very robust hooklink for a fraction of the cost of fluoro.

If i am using the rig tubing set up of this,do i need to put a no trace bead on the mainline above the rig tubing if i am using a back lead,as the current water i am fishing on is quite shallow,just as s footnote various lines have no memory so some do not work as rigs,experiment first until you find one that works,i find all of your vlogs to be superb
Hi mate, as far as I understand, no-trace beads are not meant to be used with rig tubing, they’re designed for lead free leaders. I don’t use no-trace beads but I would be concerned about using them with rig tubing. If you want to use a bead above the tubing to stop the back lead interfering with the lead, then I’d put a standard bore bead on the mainline (don’t put it on to the tubing). Hi Luke, I know the name Sensas, they do match fishing bait right? Didn't know they did mainline. The colour makes no difference whatsoever, that’s just marketing nonsense lol. Knot strength is what matters. Ignore what it says on the tin, diameter is what’s important here. As a general rule, for general carp fishing you want to use mono of 0.35mm to 0.45mm diameter. So if your line meets that criteria then sure, use it. It will work great :)

Matthew Collins thanks for the reply. I just checked and it’s Daiwa sensor line. My bad, if you can’t tell I’m from a match fishing background but have moved over to carp fishing within the last month. It is within that mm diameter range so I’ll be making this D rig tomorrow, with the hopes of fishing it soon! Thanks for the help, I find all your videos really informative and sensible in terms of theory behind the application!
@@lukeraymont9446 Hi Luke, I did wonder whether you meant Daiwa sensor lol. The Sensor line is tough and strong but I’ve found it has a nasty amount of memory and is very spongy to fish with so I’m not a big fan TBH.
