- I've never been a fan of lead clips but I would still use them occasionally, especially on the river because of the higher risk of the lead getting trapped. I have decided to stop using them completely because they are costing me fish. I now fish with running rigs 100% of the time wherever I’m fishing.
In this video, I explain how I made this decision and I show my latest running breakaway lead setup which allows me to break the lead off if it gets trapped.

I understand mate, it’s a big leap of faith to move away from a bolt effect, I was doubtful myself for years. Go for it, fish a semi tight clutch and a very solid bankside setup and you’ll never look back 👍

Hey Matt, recently stepped up from Float to Ledgering and was using the standard clip system as I thought that was just the way to do it, and I had no idea about who it all worked and that the lead was supposed to break away on a take, and I saw you video that converted a clip system (Shock and Run rig) into a running system by chopping off the lead clip etc and I have to say its been a game changer for me. Yeah I'm still a novice and still learning how to play the fish properly but the actual takes that stay in vs the ones that used to take and though the lead is incredible, so thank you for putting that together on UA-cam.

One of the things I love about carp fishing is that we are free to interpret our fishing experiences and make changes accordingly. After what happened during several sessions this year, I have decided I am better off not using lead clips at all. Wherever I’m fishing, I fish with running rigs 100% of the time. The reason: I was losing fish because of the lead clip.
I know that in certain situations I need to be able to dump the lead but there are other ways of achieving that safely without a lead clip. I’m using a new breakaway lead setup which gives me all the benefits of a running rig but if the lead gets trapped, I can easily break the lead off if I have to. Running rigs with a large bore ring are very safe by nature because the line can be drawn through the ring with minimal resistance (even with weed, silt and leaves). As I’m fishing with barbless hooks, the carp can get rid of the rig completely and quickly. So far, I have done 5 sessions with this setup. I’ve had: 14 takes, 14 fish landed, 0 leads lost.

A short tungsten anti tangle sleeve to hold the hooklink in place

@@bertharding1987 By new rig, I mean a freshly tied rig. I use a new rig each cast. The Nash heli sleeve is designed for helicopter rigs, it’s a 2 part system with a sleeve and a bead, I don’t use the bead. It’s difficult to explain all the details in writing, best to wait until the video comes out in the future.

Hi mate, the ‘shock and run’ works great but to be honest, over the last couple of years, I’ve mainly used free running lead systems because I’ve found that they work just as well. Shock and run systems are useful if you want to create ‘tell tale’ indicator so that you know whether you’re being done.

Nice fish Matt and congratulations on your new PB, its great to see them coming from public waters. I've used barbless since they first came onto the market in all types of fishing and never worried about them pulling out, even used them for my flies when trout fishing. When feeder or bomb fishing for smaller spices I use fixed paternoster but I've never used fixed leads for bigger fish like barbel and carp, always running rigs. As always, love your videos.

Excellent video Matt. I will never use a lead clip again after fishing a pressured gravel pit a couple of winters ago. A fish used the lead to rid itself of the hook and it was only because I use Jag hook sharpener that the fish found it difficult to get rid of the hook. I switched to running leads and had two Carp from a hard water. Both good hookholds. Thanks.

@@matthewcollinsangler I know you use mono a lot for hook links , I’m always reluctant to do so as I’m not confident the hook turns as well as with stripped back coated braid , what are you thoughts ?
@@bashab3098 Hi mate, mono hooklinks work great, that’s why I’ve done several videos on them. There’s not much else I can say that isn’t in these videos tbh. The carp find them harder to deal with, the hook turns quickly - that’s what other anglers have told me as well. I have lots of positive comments from anglers that made the switch. I know coated braids with a section stripped back are hugely popular but I haven’t used that type of rig for 15 years. I think they cost you chances and they’re expensive. Best thing I ever did was stop using them. In this video (ua-cam.com/video/RjdQV2U-_cc/v-deo.html ) I show how badly a coated hooklink with a section stripped back sits on the bottom.

I used to use the running rig back in the day and found it very reliable but as soon as the lead clips came out I was hooked!
Just ticked so many boxes ie could take off the lead for putting rods in holdall etc and the bolt effect obviously!
But I'm still in limbo to which one is the best!!!!!
Obviously the running rig hasn't got the resistance to set the hook as the lead clip as but it certainly works if our hooks are razor sharp and the rig is spot on!!!

Hi Daniel, ah, glad this one's peaked your interest! There’s no doubt carp are caught on lead clips all the time and that they work. What I’ve found is that sometimes the carp uses the lead to throw the rig out and I know it’s happening because I’ve got a ‘telltale’ indicator on my rig. So based on that, it’s running rigs all the way for me. I’ve also come to the conclusion that I don’t need a bolt effect to catch them. As long as my bankside setup is solid, it’s my semi tight clutch that does the hooking for me before I get to the rod. Glad this topic is creating some good discussion!

Thanks mate 😊. You're going to need 3.5lb TC as a minimum. For this session, I use 3lb Nash dwarfs 9ft.
I use a leadclip, never drop the lead on the take. I exclusively use curve shank hooks, especially when barbless. This is because with tension on the line the hook will always curve into the mouth (look at an eagles claw, curve shaped for a reason). Wide gape hooks (especially straight point) risk losing fish because they can pop out so easily even on a tight line.
Although rigs are always personal and subjective ...I always preferred to use simple running rigs and barbless hook setups....as even though there are endless old and new rig options to tempt and try out there...having periodically dabbled with different options I have always returned to running rigs again ....including a running zig rig float setup for fishing up in the water! Both are real simple approaches, but always seem to be more natural and consistent - often starting with a gentle tap into full fast runs and hook ups! Love it 😂
Found the same thing mate, I've gone back to simpler rigs over the last few years and they're working so much better for me.

On previous running rig vids you used this setup then switched to a running rig with a bead, almost like a semi fixed rig system and now your back to the free running system. Will having a sharp hook and semi tight clutch still hook the fish as there is no bolt type system in place now. I hope I’ve explained this well enough. Thanks, Mike
Hi Mike, I see what you mean and yes, over the last few years, I have experimented with different running rigs, some with a very slight bolt effect and some pure running. They both work but you have to be really careful that the carp aren’t using the bump effect to throw the rig out. With a pure running rig, I’m not using the lead to create the bolt effect, it’s the clutch that’s doing the hooking. I’m also using the elasticity of the mono and the free running ledger to make it incredibly difficult for the carp to spit out the rig. It all depends on the situation 😊

With the increase of angling pressure on my club water, I’m am definitely going to give a running lead system another go as I feel most anglers use lead clips or a heli system and it may give me the edge I’m after. I agree with everything here. The solution can be simpler, though, in my opinion. I use the Korda Safe Zone lead clips. They click onto the swivel but will come free with moderate force. I’ll carefully squeeze the eye of the swivel with pliers to make it slightly oval, after which the lead clip will come off the swivel with very little force, or no force at all, depending on how oval you make the eye. This creates a running rig with also a lead that will drop if it gets snagged. Just with much simpler components. You are definitely spot on regarding barbless and fixed lead systems. The carp will be able to shake the hook relatively easily using the lead when it is fixed and the hook is barbless.

@@matthewcollinsangler I agree that it’s not a good setup when using tubing. I don’t use tubing but I use a 3ft lead free braided leader (Korda Dura Kord). The clip and lead slide all the way up the leader and over the knot onto the mainline with no problems. It’s been working perfectly for me and I’d say my landing rate is around 95%. Carp are unable to shake the hook and if they go for a weed bed the lead will eject.

For years now I've only ever used inline leads with barbless hooks and I've used this set up with popup or bottom baits. To be honest ive never honestly believed in dropping thousands of leads on lake beds around the country. What happens to them? I'd rather listen to this guy than Fairbrass or Mr Nash who obviously earn thousands to promote there own brand. Just a personal thing but I catch all the time with my methods and have never ever pulled in a damaged or injured carp.

no matter the lake bootom, always inline fishing for me. Simple, and very good on the take, fishes having a very difficult time to eject the hook.

Hi Matt, thanks as always. Had a France trip last year and although I did fantastically well I also lost a lot of fish (snags, hook pulls etc).
I’ve always used lead clips and didn’t want to change what I knew. Going again next year and want to avoid losing so many. I like what you’re saying but I’m worried about the loss of the “bolt action” of the original semi-fixed lead clip concept.
Your running rig preference runs so contrary to the idea of the bolt rig. How are you setting the hook and replacing that self-hooking element? I can’t imagine you are striking rather than lifting into the fish?
Hi mate, you’re going to have to trust me on this! What hooks the fish is the clutch and the elasticity of the mono. The running rig also allows the lead to separate from the rig so that the carp can’t use the weight of the lead to throw the rig (this happens with a semi fixed setup / lead clip). I’ve used this method for 15 years and it’s extremely effective. I’ve transformed anglers’ sessions at my lake by switching to a running rig. Running rigs eliminate hook pulls because they add elasticity into the system.
Most of the takes are absolute rippers so it’s more a question of holding onto the rod and controlling the carp. Occasionally I get a drop back, in that case, I pick up the rod, wind down to the lead and then lift into the fish. There’s no striking.
Running rigs are most effective when used with a semi tight clutch. If you use a running rig with a slack clutch, you won’t hook the carp and they can be gone by the time you get to the rod. I’ve also come to the conclusion that I don’t need a bolt effect to catch them. As long as my bankside setup is solid, it’s my semi tight clutch that does the hooking for me before I get to the rod.

After seeing some recent underwater footage of helicopter rigs its been eye opening that fish may actually find them the hardest to deal with. The combination of the lead, leadcore and the tension from mainline to rod tip gives them 3 points of resistance when the hook goes in. With leadclips or running they just have one direction of tension to deal with. Ie - to the lead/rod tip (same direction) couple with no trace system i also see it al the safest setup. Only setup where they are left with just the rig, no mainline no lead or leader if you get snapped up

I use the Gardner c clips to attach my leads most of the time. Leads only come off if they get caught up on something. Use them on heli set up and running rigs. They come in 2 breaking strains in the pack, 3lb and 6lb I think they are. Obviously you can’t to a massive chuck, but most of my fishing is 50yards max so they’re fine

As amazing and informative as this video is, what amazes me more is a river with public rights of way that has 45lb+ carp in it... I presume this is a club run stretch with good security measures?

It's not mate. French rivers hold an incredible stock. I've caught a lot of mid-twenties on the river but I've been getting into the bigger fish this year. The rivers are managed at the department level and a standard fishing licence allows you to fish any public venue or river in that department.

Hi there, you can fish running rigs with a tight line, slack line or semi slack, or back leads. What’s important is that you need to have a very solid bankside setup and fish a semi tight clutch. With a running rig, I’m not creating the bolt effect with the lead but I am creating a much bigger bolt effect with my clutch ie it’s the clutch that’s doing the hooking of the carp. I’m also using the elasticity of the mono and the free running ledger to make it incredibly difficult for the carp to spit out the rig. I know it’s a leap of faith and it’s different to traditional semi fixed rigs but give it a go, you won’t regret it 😊

Not used them mate, tbh, I don't buy into the hype and I don't have a problem with barbless so I've got no reason to change.
Matt, have you ever tried using tadpole beads ? They work with in-line or big eye swivel leads.
Hi mate, yes, had a look. Didn’t get on well with them, the swivel was way too loose in the bead for my liking. The only way to solve this was to glue them in so I gave up on them.

Yes mate absolutely. In fact that’s exactly how I fish on lakes where I don’t need to use a heavy mono leader, 1m of 40lbs cling-on tied to 12lbs Bullet and I’m good to go 👍

Carp are known to run to low 20’s
My current largest is a 14 1/2 lb grass carp which I had to chase round one of the islands
Hi Andy,
I don’t use the Subline myself but there’s no way 0.35 mono should be easy to break. I can deadlift 12lbs with 12lb 0.33 Nash Bullet. For me 12lb ‘real world’ breaking strain should be the minimum as that’s 4 times the test curve of a 3lb carp rod.
If your line is breaking, it could be because of your choice of knot. Not all lines react the same way to the same knot. Might be worth trying a few different ones if you haven’t done so. I meet a lot of anglers at my lake and I know some find certain knots easier to tie than others.
It also depends what you’re connecting to. You’ll get a stronger knot to a lead free leader than to a swivel. If you tie to a lead free leader, use the 5 turn uni knot or palomar only.
My mainline of choice nowadays is the Nash Bullet. After trying many mainlines, it ticks a lot of boxes without having any big downsides. It casts well, has good knot strength and excellent abrasion resistance. You might notice the last few yards going a bit curly after a few sessions if you aren't fishing with a leader. If it bothers you then just cut that off and get back to a nice straight bit. It’s so strong that I’m using the 12lb version for all my carp fishing nowadays. I do add 6m of heavy duty mono snag leader 30lbs (0.50) when river carping or big chuck work on the larger reservoirs. I also get customers using the 20lbs version at the lake where we have cats to 134 lbs.

The subline was my old one which is still on the reels ( not had any problems with it other than a bit kinky )
The new one will be going in the bin !
I tried various sections of the first 50 yards on spool & each broke very easily between the 2 loop knots I created for my test pulls
Never at the knots but in middle of each 8 inch test section
For now I’ll keep on with old subline but will replace with bullet
As I said distance not needed , just a good sinker with some island & bramble abrasion resistance required
I’ve made a mental note of your suggestion of removing a few yards occasionally

Hi mate, I fish running rigs with a semi tight clutch and I’m using the clutch and the elasticity of the mono to hook the fish. The takes can be quite savage and if the carp are big enough they will rip the line off a semi tight clutch. There's very little doubt when I get a bite in the night and yeah my R4 is screaming! I know it’s completely different to how many anglers fish but it’s deadly effective and will always outfish a standard bolt rig. The running rig also allows the lead to separate from the rig so that the carp can’t use the weight of the lead to throw the rig (this happens with a semi fixed setup / lead clip). Cheers, Matt

@@Thewebbels Hi mate, if you want to fish a running rig with a bait boat, there are 3 options:
1. Fish a solid PVA bag with an inline running lead and put the lead inside the bag (rig video here: ua-cam.com/video/TPCvErlGGZ0/v-deo.html)
2. Use PVA tape to tie the lead to the sleeve or buffer bead
3. Hold the rod and the line tight just before you initiate the drop on the boat and then feel the lead down on a tight line. That works well on a shallow lake, even when you’re fishing over a tight trap of bait, but if you want to fish a tight trap over deeper water, you may find your rig lands too far away from your bait due to swing back. Not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just something to be aware of.

I love the way you try to fish safe on the lead system. But i also see you tie your rig directly on your main line. So when you have a break, the fish is left with meters of mainline behind it. Isnt it better to use safety leadclips, where the rig isnt tied to the main line so on a break the fish is only left with the rig.
Hi, yes, if there’s a break in the mainline, the fish will be trailing mainline. But I’m using barbless hooks 100% of the time so the fish can quickly get rid of the hook and the mainline. I’ve seen the evidence of this on my own lake where our guests have been fishing barbless for the last 3 years. I also make sure that the mainline and the leader are ‘over speced’ for the job and every knot is force tested. Cheers, Matt
Matt, do you still get the bolt effect with your running rigs or are you having to strike into the fish?
Hi David, I’m using a tight line and a semi tight clutch which deliver lbs of force compared to a few oz of the bolt effect. Most of the time they hook themselves, sometimes they come back towards me so I wind down and lift into them, I wouldn’t describe it as a strike. The takes can be absolutely savage! Much better than with a lead clip. Having used running rigs for so long, I don’t believe anymore that the bolt effect is necessary. In some cases, it even makes it easier for the carp to throw the rig out. I just use a pure running rig now 👍

I am using (korda) lead clips, slack lines and a semi-tight clutch (with braid mainline) and having quite a bit of success, but I’m always happy to use and try other methods to see if they can improve my catch rate :). BTW - I am enjoying your videos, they were a great help when I restarted carp fishing last year.
Noticed a shot of your hookbaits which looked like they were doused in rock salt. Is that something you do on rivers only or on lakes well?
I've been employing salt in my baiting/hookbaits as well but I'm always paranoid I might be going overboard with it and using too much salt.
If I taste the bait before putting it into the lake it is really salty.
Ah yes, well spotted! I use salt to cure the baits to make them extra and tough. No issue using them in a lake as well as the river. Don’t worry about the quantity, salt is an essential mineral that carp need and you’d have to use tonnes to have an impact on salinity.

I know your a nash kind of guy but have you seen the OMC run rigs? And what do you make of them?
Looks like the Fox system which I have tested. The ring itself is great but I didn't like the fit of the swivel in the sleeve supplied, I found it too loose and if the swivel pops out the sleeve, the product doesn't work properly. So that's what I'd be looking for in the OMC system.
What pattern of barbless hook do you use Matt?

Hi there, it is an option to do this if you use a thin lead free leader material like the 40lb Cling-On and fine mainline such as 0.35 or smaller but if something jams up and prevents the lead clip from sliding off the leader, the tail rubber is forced tighter onto the lead clip which is the last thing you need. This is why I don’t fish like this. If you want to fish with a running rig, it’s far safer to use a large bore plastic run ring that buffers up against some kind of buffer bead or sleeve. I’ve never really used them. Helicopter or more often, avid inline, of various stripes do everything.
I agree, inline leads are great. I set them to be free running or very lightly fixed by replacing the plastic insert supplied with a soft inline insert.

What about slack line fishing, mabe a gimp type clip a kink type tube which locks under pressure but slides when slack ect ,, just a thought !

How does a bolt effect work on a running lead?
And where exactly is that river?
You can make a running rig either fully running or with a light bolt effect. I have found in the last few years that I am much more successful with a pure running rig. I don’t need a bolt effect to catch carp.

The Nash run clip was originally designed for fishing with adjustable zigs and is highly effective. It’s more common to dump the lead when zig fishing and it’s certainly something I did when I fished them as playing a carp on a zig with the lead banging around many feet from the carp is horrible and you don’t have much control. I hate the practice of dumping leads and zig fishing is no longer appropriate for my angling so it’s not a problem for me.
I've only ever used running lead for carp and been doing it for 30 years.

I use inline leads no matter what end the line breaks the carp will only have the rig in its mouth in case of worst case scenarios 👍
Just put on a smaller diameter rubber. The point of the clip is to eject the lead if it gets in a snag but the clip is weak enough that you can very much just break it off if that happens. This way, you get a clip that won’t so easily eject and you still have the flexibility of breaking the lead off if it gets snagged. Ask yourself this question, how many times does my rig get snagged where I have to lose the lead? The answer at least for me is not very many.

One of my pals fishes a park lake. The swims always have anglers in. They all fish to the same spots and believe it or not my pal has caught dropped leads off the spots" twice now" and once had a run that in the end had a lead already over the hook before the carp picked it up. Just goes to show dropping leads is a bad idea.
I’ve heard plenty of similar stories mate… Hopefully these videos will encourage some anglers to give running rigs a go 👍

Yes mate, used it for years, makes a good hooklink for sure. I prefer mono snag leader these days because it comes on large diameter spools and it’s a bit nicer to handle.

Can u use it near snags
I’m not a fan of snag fishing… My rule of thumb is to never fish closer than 10m. If you’re fishing with a tight line and locked up, you can push that to 5m. I used to fish closer and I lost fish. Nowadays, I bait short of the snag and draw the fish to me, it’s safer and more effective. If there are snags where you’re fishing, you might be better off with a swivel based running rig connected by a rotten bottom (see this video: ua-cam.com/video/pSjT2wPKtTw/v-deo.html). If something bad happens, the fish will be able to break off the lead easily. Hope that helps.
If the swivel is build into the leadclip you lose alot of fish use leadclips that slide over the line and come lose from the swivel after a take and make it a running lead system aswel

I only fish with running leads so no, I don’t lose the lead when I get a bite. With a standard lead clip, yes, the lead is dropped on the take. That’s not good for the environment and also it’s not a very effective way of catching carp.

@@michaelhedges41070 There are several Fox systems out there but here’s a test you can do yourself: check that the ring carrying the lead can fly over the end of the tubing and up the mainline with zero resistance. If that happens, then yes, it’s safe. I would use strong mainline (20lb, 0.40mm) and test the knots so that if the lead does become trapped, when you pull for a break, you’ll break the ring rather than your mainline. Its a shame they dont make them guru qm1 hooks in bigger sizes the way they hold is something else there size 10 is like a specimen size 14 so no good for the massive mouths great for carp up to 12lb
I know you said your not using them. And when you read my comment you might have negative opinions. But when fishing any wild river with wild river Caro you should push the tail rubber on all the way. And here's why. Wild river carp are much stronger than lake carp due to the fact they have to fight the flow all year round, this means they have much more strength and power when doing anything. But because wild river carp are wild they don't get caught that often and they usually only get caught 4-5 times in their life so this means they don't actually learn how to use the lead weight to eject the hook, this means you can push the tail rubber on all the way and they won't eject the hook or the lead, and on top of that because they are so strong and don't know how to eject the lead or hook they actually end up pushing the lead clip out of the swivel making it a running system. It's a tactic me and my dad have been using for years when fishing for river carl and it hasn't failed us in years.
No problem with your comment at all, our experiences have led us to very different conclusions and decisions. You have a setup that obviously works very well for you and I know anglers catch carp on lead clips every day. We just have very different perspectives on fishing. I agree with a lot of what you say. I’ve been fishing the river for 10 years and, yes, they pull like nothing else! And they’re not very pressured.
However, as I said in the video, I had several instances when the carp 100% used the weight of the lead when I was using a lead clip and I’ve had it before so for me, it’s an issue.
I would never push on the tail rubber fully because it’s a safety issue (ua-cam.com/video/a6WI6Y1o_Xk/v-deo.html) and I’ve seen the consequences of that at my lake.
I had a 100% hook to land ratio last year on the river with the Nash run clip and this year, so far 100% with my new breakaway setup. I’ve never achieved that with lead clips. I have solved my problem.

Am coming around to the idea of running rigs and the nash run clips seems a good option, ive fished with lead clips for years with bait runner's. But last few months as i start to stop using bait runners and fished more locked up and lossing fish, ive come to the conclusion these are younger fish with soft mouths using the lead to throw the hook ,even if i use barbed hooks
@@accesszero4803 Any carp of any size or age is capable of doing a rig on a lead clip. The run clip may or may not be suitable for your needs. Give it a go and if you’re losing too many leads, just use a regular running rig with some kind of rotten bottom arrangement if you need to 👍 Running rigs have transformed my fishing.

Over here there invasive as all hell and are starting to ruin our salmon rivers....I found a spot in one of the lakes and there was 100s of them in the shallows thrashing around I used a pop up with a hair rig and some corn but there was heavy weeds.....I would love to pick your brain if I can I'm trying to get everyone on vancouver island to learn to carp fish as nonone has a clue and there wrecking all our rivers and lakes here.....there kool fish but man they wreck everything...
