Lay aka. Zhang Yixing is a current member of EXO since 2012 and their only Chinese member right now.
However due to political tensions between Korea and China, he is unable to participate in EXO activities since 2017 Kokobop era.

Because you were uncertain about why Lay hasn't been allowed to be with EXO for the past few years. I thought I would fill you in on some things that I know about the situation. His hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but its something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. So he has recently been working hard to find ways around those restrictions, which explains one reason why he has been releasing so many English songs lately. By producing songs in English for the U.S. market it allows him and SM to do collaboration projects which give him a chance to keep his connection to EXO, without actually breaking any rules, and it allows SM to connect the stories in his MVs to EXO's storyline.
Lay is one of the most famous celebrities in China right now, so everyone wants to work with him. He owns his own record label in China and he produces his own music, as well as music for other artists. Plus, he is, or was, a youth ambassador to China appointed by the government, which means he has a lot of obligations in China. He is considered China's national producer. He is also an actor and he is a spokesperson for a lot of Chinese products and causes -- he is the EXO member with the most endorsement deals. He is also a host of reality programs and is appearing on numerous variety shows in China, so this all keeps him very busy. He is one of the most sought after celebrities in China so he spends a lot of time living in China and away from the other EXO members. Because of his super busy schedule and because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay has not been a part of EXO activities for more than 3 years now, other than his cameo appearance in. the "Tempo" MV and his brief vocal part in the Mandarin version of "Tempo" MV and song.
Now I am no where near an expert on the topic, and I admit that I only understand a very minor part of what is going on between the Chinese and Korean government, but as I understand it, part of the reason for the ban on Chinese and Korean workers between the two countries is that China is refusing to align itself with the U.S. or South Korea to protect themselves with deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. North Korea and China want to get rid of the rocket system that is meant to shoot down a nuclear missile if North Korea were to launch one at South Korea or the U.S. Another reason why China doesn't like the THAAD system is because China and the U.S. don't have the best relationship, so if the U.S. and China become on even worse terms China is afraid the U.S. could also use THAAD against them. China says the THAAD system is just provoking them to actually start a nuclear war, and until they remove it or at least move it back from the South Korean boarder, they will continue their ban on Korean products, workers and the Hallyu wave from working in China and for its native Chinese citizens from working with Korean companies. China feels like the Korean government is taking away its native commodities by allowing Chinese people to work in Korea. The issue is even more complicated than this, but that is one part of it.
SM and Lay had to make a deal with the Chinese government to allow Lay to be featured in EXO's "Termpo" MV and I think part of that agreement is that he would only sing on the Mandarin track, but he had to record those parts as a solo and have them inserted into the song and MV, that way he technically wouldn't be "working" with a Korean company, and he would still be promoting Chinese culture. I also think that is one of the reasons why he is focusing on producing English songs for the U.S. market because of all the regulations and obligations the Chinese government has in place right now. The Chinese government is still not lifting the restrictions they have on their native mainland Chinese citizens to allow them to work in Korea, and Korean artists aren't allowed to work in mainland China. So several of SM Entertainment artists, such as Zhoumi from Super Junior-M and Victoria from F(x), have been separated from their groups for a long time now. If Lay wasn't one of the top celebrities in China, and if he wasn't a member of EXO, one of the most popular groups in Asia, he probably wouldn't have been allowed to bend the rules as much as he already has.
And that also is why NCT's Chinese sub-unit WayV took so long to debut and why they are being represented by a company outside of SM Entertainment. Because SM had to spend time trying to find a Chinese company that was willing to represent the group, but would still give SM control over their concept and activities.

@@norfizahabdrahman1587 lay is an ambassador.. that's the most important one.. from what I've read, there are certain places in China that have their own regulations.. so, they're not really strict about it.. another one, it says that it depends on their nationality.. if they're pure Chinese (both parents are Chinese) n not part of the regions I talk abt just now.. then they too will face the same problem as Lay..

Okay I'll try to clear up your confusion in simple words. Lay(stage name) = Zhang Yixing is a member of EXO. EXO currently has 9 members, 8 of them are Korean and Lay is Chinese. due to political issues between China and South Korea, Lay isn't allowed to perform in Korea. He's currently doing solo activities in China and USA. Now, a lot of people MIGHT have told you that Lay is am ex member of EXO. But that is not the truth. For whatever reasons, he is unable to perform with EXO. But EXO has 9 members and he's 1 of them. And he always reminds us in his interviews that yes, he is an EXO member and he misses performing with his brothers very much.

Lay is one of the original members of Exo, from way back in 2011. He still is a member of Exo today. When Exo debuted in 2012, they had 12 members, 8 korean members and 4 Chinese members. The chinese members learned korean, the korean members learned chinese. They made 2 sub-groups from debut days, Exo-K for korean (6 korean members) and Exo-M for mandarin (4 Chinese members, 2 korean). They recorded all songs and shot all mvs in korean and chinese, featuring said language and members. But all Exo members appeared somewhere in all videos. Problems and controversy reared it's ugly head shortly before 2014-15 when 3 of the Chinese members sited unfair treatment and grueling work schedules with no let up, to the point of exhaustion and injury. The 3 Chinese members, Luhan, Kris, then Zitao, left one by one after going to court, and returned to China to pursue music and acting on their own. They have achieved what they wanted, but the breakup took a great toll on the korean members physically and emotionally. It was a devastating time for all of them. After Exo achieved extreme popularity and success so soon in 2013 around the world, and at such a young age, they were in incredible demand and we're working day in day out with hardly any rest. When the breakup came, Exo feared the fans would drop them and their careers would end seeing each and every member had a great, loving fandom. But they continued working hard, promising their fans they will make everything good, regardless of their f**ked company SM. Lay, or Yixing (Yee-shing) is the last Chinese member who is still part of Exo, but has taken a hiatus over the last 3 years to pursue his dream of a solo career in China, with SM'S support. Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and this is definitely not his first solo song or even his first solo project. This is his 3rd or 4th album and he was the first member of EXO to have solo projects. Even when he was still able to participate in activities with EXO, he was releasing solo songs. You really need to check out some more of Lay's solo work. Some of his most recent English songs you should check out are "Give Me a Chance" and "Namanana," but he also has several older solo songs in Mandarin Chinese and Korean such as "Monodrama," "What U Need?," "Lose Control, "I Need U,," "Sheep," "Mask", etc. Have you seen and heard the collaboration song and MV that Lay did with Jason Derulo and NCT-127? It was called "Shut Up and Dance" and it was a part of Lay's and NCT's English crossover into the U.S. music market. In the MV Lay is a bee and he is looking for his "honey" that's why he is in a honey comb or in a pool of honey the whole time. Although I haven't really had time to analyze the story in "Honey's" MV, I can tell it has elements (especially the beginning) that most likely have something to do with EXO's storyline.

Others have mentioned that Lay(Zhang Yixing) is a member of EXO, and the hexagon (besides the honeycomb connection) has a significant connection to EXO because EXO's most famous logos are hexagonal. Originally, EXO had 12 members divided into 2 groups of 6; so their logo was a hexagon made from the letters of EXO. You'll see a lot of hexagons used in EXO related things~~~

As a newbie you might think this is a weird song and concept, but for any of us that know EXO, and especially Lay, its kind of exactly what we would expect from him. This is just the sexy, cool kind of song and amazing choreography that Lay is known for. All the guys want to be him and all the girls want to be with him. When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all himself -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he has a large part in choreographing the dances and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. There really is almost nothing he can't do. That's including learning English so he could make a crossover into the U.S. music market.
If you understood that Lay is a member of EXO and that everything that EXO does, including several of Lay's solo projects, is connected and its meant to tell, at least in part, a little more of EXO's story, then the whole MV might make a little more sense. Some fan theories say that the fact that the weather lady on the TV is talking about the changing weather and the pressure system could be a nod to the unsettled conditions within EXO's current storyline and how currently the members are struggling to distance themselves from the Red Force, etc.And because you hear her speaking with a British accent this might be a clue to tell us where Lay is right now and it might explain why the other EXO members might be sending him messages -- as we see with the bee and the blackout, etc. Most of the members powers have weather and nature elements that could be affected by and affecting the weather around the world. Some theories say, the mechanical bee has been sent by either one or more of the EXO members or it could be sent by the Red Force. The bee is either a message or a warning sent to Lay (although I am not fully confident as to what that exact message is.) And I think, the fact that the bee passes through the glass, might be Kai using his power of teleportation to allow it to pass through it -- or more like, transported to the other side of the glass. And then the lights in the entire city go out as if in a blackout, which I think might be Baekhyun using his power which is the ability to control light.
Also, I think its interesting that Lay has the power of healing and honey is known for its natural healing and medicinal propitiates. And in parts of the MV we see Lay submerged in a pool of honey almost as if he might be using it to recharge and gain strength. I have no idea what this all means, but I just thought it was an interesting parallel.
As you can see EXO's MVs are more complex then what you see on the surface and often -- although the stories in the MVs are loosely based on the lyrics -- many times the story in the MV and the lyrics in the song are two separate things. The lyrics don't necessarily have anything to do with the story in MV. Often EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl and wanting to be with her, but the story in the MV is about them working to complete their mission and to fight against the Red Force, etc. Everything EXO does has many layers and it has multiple means and messages.
To understand EXO you have to keep in mind that, from day one, their concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo and they have been sent to Earth on a mission to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. As aliens, each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and in almost all of their MVs you will see at least one of the members, if not all of them, using their powers in some way.
However, the fun, cool, and sometimes frustrating, thing about EXO is the fact that all of the storylines in their MVs are connected, but they are not necessarily in chronological order. So we, as EXO-Ls (EXO fans), have to become detectives and really pay attention to the most minute details in everything EXO does in order to figure out where each part of the story fits within their larger storyline.

🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.

☄Kai is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation

As other fans have explained, he's currently not promoting with the rest of the members due to political tensions between China and South Korea since 2016. Aside from being the nation's producer, Lay is also Hunan's Youth Ambassador. This means he has obligations to fulfill as a Chinese citizen, thus limiting his ability to promote as part of a Kpop band under a Korean agency. He was also in Tempo Chinese version, but only for a few seconds. He produced, wrote and composed most of his songs (English lyrics are usually written by someone else). On top of the information everyone else has already said about Yixing, iirc he also relatively recently debuted in the US. The album included both English and Chinese versions of all the songs, it was really cool! He writes a lot/all? of his own music! And he was known in EXO as an excellent dancer.

Lay (Zhang Yixing) is part of EXO, he is sadly the only Chinese member left. His song Honey (和你) is the title track from his latest EP. He is a music producer, singer and artist among other things. All his music is written and composed by him. The MVs are his own ideas and he pays for them himself.
He has a lot of different styles of music. Give Me A Chance, Sheep and Lose Control are my favorites that has MVs, you should check them out sometime. In the West he has collaborated with people like Bazzi, Jason Derulo, Alan Walker and Far East Movement to name a few.

Lay zhang (aka yixing zhang) has 3 solo albums and a new ep (honey is one of the 4 songs) coming out. He composed and produced all of his solo songs, and wrote the lyrics for some. He’s one of the best dancers in Kpop (he’s a member of exo) and is a huge star in China.

To simplify the situation a little (even tho I'm sure others have done so) and to answer some of your questions, his name is Zhang Yixing (stage name is Lay) and he is a member of EXO. Due to political tension between China and South Korea (someone please correct me if I didn't word this properly. I suck at explaining things) he has been unable to perform with the rest of EXO for the past couple of years. He has, however, been very successful in his solo career. Despite his success, he has never once stopped reminding us that he is still an EXO member and that he misses performing together with them. Despite the fact that EXO has been promoting as 8, they also never fail to mention Lay during interviews and openly admit to miss him. Yes, it has been a while since we last saw them together, but they are still 9 members regardless of what others (a minority of fans within the fandom) may say. Please support him the same way you seem to support the rest of EXO.

Lay - also known as Zhang Yixing - is the 9th and last remaining chinese member of Exo. Because of the current political tensions between South Korea and China he has not actively promoted with the group in almost 2 years. He is super active promoting under his own studio in China though and you should definately check out Sheep and Namanama!

Unfortunately because of issues between China and Korea Lay hasn’t been in any of EXO’s recent comebacks except for a cameo in their MV for Tempo I believe. But he is still part of EXO!

Zhang Yi Xing a.k.a. Lay. Currently in a group called EXO, one of the main dancers in the group. He’s the only Chinese member rn since the other 3 chinese members left. But he’s doing his solo career right now. It’s been his dream to get people to know at where he came from (China) and the music he produces. He also choreographed some of his songs. After he achieved this goal, he’ll be joining his brothers(EXO) again. ^^

For example, his last album NAMANANA was recorded both in Chinese and English.
