For the double play on words here, I looked it up and the Chinese character “莲” (lián) means 'lotus'. In the MV there's many shots of a golden lotus slowly opening. The part where it sounds like he's saying "I am the lit", if you look at the subtitles it actually says "I am the 莲" or "I am the [lotus]". Lotus flowers (莲花/ lián huā) are important in Chinese culture, and they represent purity and righteousness. This is because the lotus grows into a beautiful, pure flower, all while sprouting in the mud- so it can represent silent strength in the face of adversity, purity, truth, and (the one I think Lay may be referring to) the idea that no matter what others see or think, all that matters is that YOU know that you are upright and just (I.e. in the face of slander, gossip, or rumors, you can still stand tall and proud because you know you have done nothing wrong). The meaning of lotus flowers is also prominent in Buddhism, which is important in Chinese culture as a whole. So I think he's saying that not only is he always standing tall with no fear, but that even when we worry, he still has silent strength. Just looking at the MV, it seems like a song where he's just saying he's 'Lit' (and that's not a bad thing, sometimes we just need a bop 😉), but there's also a deeper message behind it, and it not only makes it a lot more meaningful, but also shows us how much thought he put into it (as if that weren't obvious enough with the production value and his name over and over in the credits)- and how he tries to be sincere and genuine with us. Saying that he's not pretending, and he actually is just, and upright, and stands strong on his own. Saying that he will not bow his head to these accusations, and he is standing up tall and proud for himself. I think, as much as it is a message for us, and for the haters in a way, it's also a reminder to himself to never let himself cow before them. Maybe he's struggled with that before, and this could be a song he wrote while breaking through to his new, proud self, like a lotus blooming. I think that's beautiful....

This MV was based off of Yixings (Lays) favorite Chinese historical figure. A Chinese general named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. The background music you hear in the beginning is called “The Song Of Gaixia” which Xiang Yu composed for his wife Lady Yu (lays song Jade) who later took her own life. The MV is the portrayal of Xiang Yus entrapment by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife Consort Yu.

All necessary production was carried out by Lay Zhang Studio aka Yixing himself and his team. Something interesting is that Lay could have been inspired by the story of Xiang Yu and Lady Yu for this mv (but it is a theory that I read, it isn't official). Anyway, Lay surpassed any expectations with this album! 💖🙌🏻

The meaning of lotus flower 莲花 also relates to the meaning of this Chinese idiom 出淤泥而不染 (chuyuni erbuyuan) = literally: to grow out of the mud unsullied, figuratively: to be principled and incorruptible. This MV was based off of Yixings (Lays) favorite Chinese historical figure. A Chinese general named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. The background music you hear in the beginning is called “The Song Of Gaixia” which Xiang Yu composed for his wife Lady Yu (lays song Jade) who later took her own life. The MV is the portrayal of Xiang Yus entrapment by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife Consort Yu.

Hi Ben, thanks for reacting to this video! I must say that SM didn't have much to do with this video, moreover I would only say that they put their logo on the mv. All necessary production was carried out by Lay Zhang Studio aka Yixing himself and his team. Something interesting is that Lay could have been inspired by the story of Xiang Yu and Lady Yu for this mv (but it is a theory that I read, it isn't official). Anyway, Lay surpassed any expectations with this album! 💖🙌🏻

lotus in Mandarin sound the same as Lit.
I don't know any Chinese word that sounds particularly similar to lit (I am still learning) and king in Chinese sounds more like Guówáng, I hope this was helpful!
Lián means lotus in chinese so basically he is saying he is the lotus the symbol of purity and rightiousness it also signifies strength as it grows in mud. Basically its a msg to the haters who called him fake lotus
emmmm...not just him is called WHITE LOTUS on Chinese social network... all people pretending to be innocent and pure but bad inside are called WHITE LOTUS ... I don't know why white lotus becomes a negative metaphor to describe those people, but in Chinese ancient literatures , lotus is always given a good meaning to describe a person who is naive, innocent and pure, away from dirt.

He is referring to when antis call him white lotus which says that he tries to seek attention by pretending to act innocent. The army of people surrounding him can be seen as the anti's who's "got all eyes on 【him】." "Take take take no one beat me down..." is his response bkus he is strong and walks his own path. The lotus also grows in mud but remains pure and he states that in his lyrics. He is surrounded by antis talking bad about him but he remains unharmed. His music will do the talking.
In regards to SM paying for his MV, it is not true. It's actually his studio and himself that pays for most of the production since SM will not fork out this type of money for an MV. Lay chases after the highest quality and he will spend the money even if he doesn't profit from it. It's been mentioned in interviews before that his studio actually gets mad at him for spending so much but Lay is stubborn and will spend it anyways. If you look at the credits, its mainly Zhang Yixing studio.

Hi! I read somewhere that the MV was inspired by a Chinese opera called Farewell, My Concubine. When Lay smears the ink on his face to create a mask, it resembles the war mask worn by the king, Xiang Yu when he was in battle.

The meaning of lotus flower 莲花 also relates to the meaning of this Chinese idiom 出淤泥而不染 (chuyuni erbuyuan) = literally: to grow out of the mud unsullied, figuratively: to be principled and incorruptible. As the lotus flower grows from the mud, grows up through the water and comes out to the surface as a beautiful flower. You can see how Lay also emerges out of the water in some scenes. Also the choreography formation in the beginning (with the red background) is a lotus flower. And in the back of his black Chinese clothes there is a lotus embroidery

A couple of points to offer some cultural context for the international fans:
1). The Chinese character 莲 in the title means lotus the flower. In Chinese philosophy it symbolizes purity and enlightenment because a lotus flower grows out of the muddy bottom of a lake but it is not soiled. It can be used to describe a person who keeps his integrity and stays pure. I think this fits our Lay perfectly.
2). From various interviews I've seen of him on Chinese social media platforms, he has mentioned he is channeling the King Xiang Yu 项羽 from 200 B.C. in "LIT". There are many stories about the King. His love story with his queen is legendary (and also tragic). In the song "Jade", Lay's also channeling the queen Yu Ji 虞姬. He said this album consists of two parts, one part about the ancient times and one part about the modern era.
Hey Ben, where you been man? If "Honey" is the only mv you've seen, whoa...this man has been working non-stop, as a songwriter, musician, choreographer and has made some great music. Lay IS a producer, for the past few years now, ever since he went to China to create his first solo album but then was stuck in China.....he has not only wrote songs, created choreo, worked on mvs, he has produced a few albums and became a producer that way. Lay is a workaholic, and from being a child actor to a very popular actor today, having several albums, he has some awesome mvs out there since 2017 that you gotta see.
His recent "Grandmother" he made when she passed away, but if you watch his mv "I Need You" (so awesome) from 2017, he made that song and video as a tribute to his grandparents (who raised him), and in the end of the video he put his grandparents in the video. I love that one.
Lay is a very hardworking person, he has been a judge for a Chinese version of "Produce 101", mentoring young ones, with serious critiques of the performers. He has been in so many music shows and appeared in so many stages promoting albums as he produced them, his first album he created using his own money. He is like a king in China, and is considered a high-status celebrity in China, where everyone knows who he is, and throughout Asia. Now this album....I can't wait!
Another background of this song!!!This song was inspired by Xiang Yu(项羽）, an ancient Chinese hero with many legends. After losing the battle, he refused to run away. His lover YuJi (虞姬）suicide after singing a farewell song for him( which is the opera at the beginning of the MV). Xiang yu later committed suicide. In the MV, LAY and Xiang Yu are surrounded by soldiers, as if they're talking through time and space.This year is also the 2222 anniversary of xiang yu's death.What's more, the 'Jade' in the album is written from yu ji's point of view.

In the chorus, he is saying 'I am the Lián' which is Chinese for Lotus and he makes reference to growing from the mud and not paying attention to the filth in later lyrics. He does say 'I am Lit' in the chorus, but you can see in the lyrics at the bottom that these are at different parts.
He produced most of his songs actually. And if you look at the end credit, Lay is the writer of this MV. He shot this MV some time around December last year and he took 6 months for the whole production.
