    This was my first Macintosh Computer ,this machine, was pure gold and the best by far for the classic mac line :)
    FYI max os was 8.0, you had to open the Tome files from the installer disc, extract finder / system / Appearance Lib to the system folder. Overwrite the old ones or just move the old ones to the trash. Restart and golden ! 8mb ram min and about 10mb hd space, works with most system 7 extensions. Simply extract the other objects you need from the installer disk as required. Also a great model to run Soft PC :) DOS Gaming on the SE 30 was killer fun and total bragging rights :) One last thing, windows 3 under Soft PC brought a semi modern office and browser to the system, was worth it :)

    It's amazing the difference between this mainboard and the one from a Performa 636 circa 1994; there are less than half the chips onboard, most of them being moved into an ASIC called "Valkyrie" which contains the video display processor and most of the peripheral interfaces.

    19:45 The sound called "Sosumi" was named that because it was a homonym for "so sue me" which references Apple's legal disputes with Apple Corps.

    I just love old macs. I grew up with them... I got a Mac plus with a 20mb external hdd in 1986. Then in 1990 got a IIsi which I later managed to track down a 68882 coprocessor nubus card for. I recently tried to install an emulator basilisk on my pc to try and play some old games. But it didn’t work properly.

    lovely!!! thank you so much for uploading this, i remember a similar mac from the 90s, with a very similar boot process. I'm glad Apple is bringing the progress bar back to the next OS, Yosemite :)

    this was the first computer I ever owned. it was a hand me down from my Grandmother when I was about 7. I couldn't have been happier than bugs bunny on the moon when I opened the big microwave box in the corner behind the Christmas tree. between this my hp 550c and Hayes 1200 baud modem, I was the Mac kid! computing was so much more special back then.

      @@tylertyler82 I had one of the original teal ones of those too. Apple although being rediculously proprietary, put out some solid, quality products I when jobs was alive. The best the market with the graphical user interface.

I still need to replace the caps on the logic board because sometimes I get horizontal lines on the display

    SE/30 was my first Mac. I got it well after its time, when Power Macs were first starting to hit. If it didn't eventually end up in a dumpster, I guarantee the thing still works.

      Cavok Ced Great to hear that there is another SE/30 up and running!
      Like other Macs of that era, the SE/30 can use any 3.5 inch 50-pin SCSI hard disk, so you should be able to find a replacement fairly easily.

    I use to love selling these SE/30s, all the way up to 2006 or so. My customers were still asking for these approx 15 years after they stop making them. It's now 2020 so can you imagine anyone asking for an iMac G5 1.8Ghz built in 2005? I believe I have 4 of these in storage, with 2 of them in working condition.

    Holy sh1t freaky... all the memories... visceral... computers were more fun back then. Owning one of these was like owning the Holy Grail. I felt like I had acquired a massive forbidden jewel from a dragon. pounding out a diary in Microsoft Word, making Hypercard Stacks, playing Crystal Quest and Dark Castle and a ton of other games. I had almost all the software and spent a lot of time floppy inserting and popping out. Don't miss any of it, but I miss all of it. Excrutiatingly slow, but a much smaller microcosm of a world you were alone in with no internet, just you creating and copying softwar and files.

    When removing the logic board I prefer to unplug the hard drive and floppy connectors first, when it’s still in situ, then release the board from the slot rails and pull it out a bit before disconnecting the power supply and speaker. It allows better access and reduces the chance of accidentally slamming he back of your hand into the CRT neck and bursting the tube (been there, done that).

    Hi Jason, just wanted to say that your knowledge and well presented talks on old macs make for an enjoyable watch! Following this video I've bought an SE/30 and plan to restore it over the coming months. Have you treated many of your computers for yellowing, any advice? Also, interested to know whether any your macs are still in regular / semi-regular use, and if so, what for?!

    • @themacintoshmuseum
      @themacintoshmuseum  9 років тому +2

      Richard Davies I have not attempted to treat any of my old Macs for yellowing, but I have heard good things about "Retr0bright". I plan to mix up some of this and try it in the near future.
      The only Mac in my collection that is in regular use would be my Power Macintosh 9600, which I use as a LocalTalk bridge so that my old Macs can use their LocalTalk ports to access my Ethernet connected file server.

    Wow. I honestly didn't know it could do this!
    I went to a back woods school and in 1988 the government decided every school needed a computer so one day an Apple Mac showed up but nobody could use it beyond basic word processing.
    I remember people from the surrounding farms came to the school to look at the new computer.
    They were like "make it do something!" And I'm like "I can write a letter but that's it!" (Little did the know I could draw books with Turtle)

    It seems that out of all the classic compact Macs, this might just be the most sought after of those because of the "bang for the buck" it seems to offer. Although one has to wonder how much better this was over the Classic II, which was the other one I was probably looking at.

    HI, great video. I have a Mac SE... in EMUVR and emulation system. However, the only way I can boot the OS 7.5.5 is from a boot disk. This means that the drive is then occupied and I cannot use it for anything else. Do you know of a way please that the os that is on the (virtual) floppy can be mounted or written to the hd (this is an emulation but there is an HD and it is supposed mimic the functionality of an actual Mac SE).

    Actually I think the Macintosh Classic II which was a gimped budget version of the SE/30 (much like how the Macintosh Classic was a gimped down SE) had a Microphone port. A shame too. Would have been nice for the SE/30 to have a Mic port. Don't know why they even bothered putting one on the Classic II. :P

    • @themacintoshmuseum
      @themacintoshmuseum  9 років тому +1

      steven joel The flashing question mark icon indicates that the Mac cannot find a valid disk to start up from. Almost all SE/30s came with a standard hard disk, so you may have a bad hard disk. I would recommend obtaining a Mac startup floppy disk (or making one yourself using an emulator), and attempting to start the system up off that disk,

    I just found a rough one of these, unit only, no cord, mouse or anything. It turns on, but won't boot up, And I can't use a floppy because, well, A, by only startup floppy was erased by another SE at school earlier this year, and B, this drive is in awful condition, and I think the Hard drive is shot. I have a regular SE that works with a working hard drive, can I boot the SE/30 of of the original SE?
    Thanks,

    • @themacintoshmuseum

      Hiraghm I do not think that the front panels are interchangeable between the SE/30 and the 128k/Plus - but I have to admit that I haven't tried!

      The SE/30 has a Motorola 68030 processor, whereas the original had a 68000. Fun fact: Apple typically used the letter "x" to indicate the use of a 68030 processor (e.g. Macintosh II had a 68020 and when they upgraded it to a 68030 it became the Macintosh IIx) but of course they were never going to same the Macintoh SE the SEx...

      I like to play with my old Macs every once in a while.
      However, I am quickly reminded why they are in storage.
      Sloooow and buggy OS. Nostalgia is short lived.
      Before 2000, computers could barely handle office apps.
      Now I am working on massively parallel and scientific apps.
      Again I feel the frustration of slow computers.
      But this time just being a few thousand times faster than current computers will not help.
      These apps require computers billions of times faster.

    These are beautiful computers. I used to like Apple products very much, up until 1994 or so. When the introduced a translucent iMac without a floppy drive, I thought it was a joke. Anyway, I have two macs, a Classic and Classic II, to run MOTU Performer, and Opcode Vision, respectively. But the Classic's screen, there's something wrong with it, and the Classic II the fan makes a lot of noise. Maybe they're overpriced crap products, I don't know. My Atari 1040STfm with SM124 monitor still works beautifully, you know. Seems like crap companies hang around, and good companies go out of business.

    • @newagederpderp
      @newagederpderp 8 років тому

      Four things:
      1. Check the Classic's CRT monitor inside.
      2. The Classic 2 might just be really warm.
      3. Atari was a part of Nintendo.
      4. Crap/good: It's the other way around.

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 8 років тому

      +Evan Ellsworth I think Atari ST is fantastic. Far more advanced for MIDI applications than the Macintosh which seems quite basic and cut down on features compared with the ST. Sure, the SE/30 and Macintosh II are very high quality products, bit the music software was far more advanced and professional on the Atari. I mean, I tried the MOTU Performer and Opcode Vision on the Macintosh, but when I tried Dr.T's KCS, C-Lab Creator, or Steinberg Pro-24 and Cubase, I really don't want to go back to the Macintosh.
