Been waiting for a proper reaction to this piece for ages. Extremely impactful song with superb lyrics and top notch piano playing. Both ends of the duo perfectly aligned for a tour de force of a song.
My favourite Elton John song for years. There are so many 'deep cuts' on his albums which are as good or better than his well known hits, none better than Ticking.

Ticking as in ticking time bomb which eventually went off resulting in a massacre.
Forget the haunting lyrics that are truer today than 50 years ago, set to the emotionally powerful music, and let that piano overtake you.
This recording reminds us that the piano is a percussive instrument and this is what a five star performance sounds like.

Fantastic song. I remember playing it again and again when I bought the album when I was young. Those long story songs that Bernie wrote and Elton so greatly put melody and piano playing. Like.. Someone Saved my Life Tonight, Indian Sunset and especially Tonight which is a 20th century classical masterpiece.
Incredible track, so happy you got a chance to see this side of Elton! So many don’t get beyond the hits, and it’s a real shame.
Glad you enjoyed it so much. There is such a rabbit hole from here, but I might recommend “Tonight” as another sweepingly melancholic epic that I’d pit right against “Tonight” any day.

Unaddressed or unresolved psycho-emotional concerns are 'ticking' time bombs. We often don't see the signs and cultural and social stigmas prevent from pursuing help. We as a society will judge the final violent act. Instead, of examining how to see and intervene and hopefully reduce the frequency of ticking, ticking, ticking boom. Such songs are unreleased because they may force us listeners to get out of our self-obsession and maybe be more mindful about checking in with our loved ones to find out what's really going on with them. Elton is an iconic artist for reasons of his piano playing, singing, and lyrical content. I'm off the soapbox now.
