That double LP album is so full of great songs that most people have never heard before. Examples include HARMONY AND ME and ALL THE YOUNG GIRLS LOVE ALICE. Give them a listen when you can.
@AirDOGGe, I love the one about the sailors visiting the prostitutes. “I’m back on dry land once again. Opportunity awaits me like a rat in a drain.” Damn title escapes me.
The depth of passion and exquisite musicianship make this one of my Elton favorites. I wish more people knew about it, but I don’t mind it being a well-kept secret.
@bugvswindshield, for any “rock” fan. Made me think of a conversation I was once having with a young guy who didn’t live this music in real time the way I did. We were discussing in general rock n rollers, and I brought up Elton John, to which he replied “yeah but he wasn’t really a rocker, was he?” I asked him, have you ever heard Love Lies Bleeding? “No”. Well, check it out and get back to me. Next day at work that’s all he could talk about. 🤣
This is one of my favorite songs from this album. Obviously Elton’s piano playing/ vocals are great but Nigel Olson’s drumming is done so good and helps set the mood. Big influences on me as a young knucklehead drummer Dee Murray on bass and David Johnson on guitar Great song.
This is one of the songs Elton played when I saw him live in 1980. Just like the rest of Yellow Brick Road its a masterpiece, just a powerful gets in you song. 50 years later it still sounds fantastic.
06:44 Be aware that Elton didn't write his lyrics. They were written by Bernie Taupin, a lyricist who their publishing company paired him with, early on, to great success, in the style of many classic musical/lyrical duo teams of the 20th Century, like George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart/Hammerstein, Gilbert and Sullivan, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. That whole double album is a classic '70s masterpiece, with hardly any dim spots. I used to think _Jamaica Jerk Off_ was one of those, until I heard Elton talk about what really happened when they were trying to record in Jamaica during a period of political upheaval, and basically fled the country, afraid for their lives, after coming under suspicion of the authorities, to France to start over recording the songs at Hérouville, a village in France. If you believe Sir Elton, all the songs were written over a period of two weeks in a hotel in Kingston, and the entire album was recorded over another mere two later weeks at Château d'Hérouville, where they'd recorded before. Incredible, if true. At any rate, the double album is a landmark record from the early seventies and deserves the deep dives you're doing. Good on you, man!
Oh man this one been hidden away deep in that album. I was in 10 th grade when that album took the world by storm. All I listened to for months. Saw Elton 4 Times. Once in a very small Venue. Constitution Hall. Like a movie theater. Was amazing. All his early music and concerts were masterpieces. Go back to Older early Elton. Bad side of the moon. For one. 1970. Recorded in a little club I think. Real Elton, pounding the ivory.
The orchestration in this is just incredible. Also, the Guitar solo is actually being played backwards. I think that was a suggestion by the Gus Dudgeon, the producer. Davey pulled it off beautifully.
AWESOME!... You have done my four favorites from Sir Elton John. "Empty Garden was first, "Madman Across The Water", "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"... and now you know this song sounds nothing like Ba,Ba,Ba, Benny And The Jets. Thanks again JM for another great reaction.
The world all too often forgets that Elton wrote only the music after Bernie wrote the lyrics, check out “Harmony”. This album put Elton back on top and really saved him from disappearing from the music scene… he owes his longevity to this one.
Around 5:00 is the flipped guitars sound, replicates oboes which not in the orchestra. heard this with Beatles White Album, #9 i guess. the bass doubles the piano chords in the verses to make it heavy, as you say. There's like, tight acoustic strumming just before, some triangle [ting ting ting] to tell you something's about to happen.
A Thanksgiving Tradition!. Since this song came out in 1967 millions celebrate each Thanksgiving listening to this iconic legendary masterpiece of story telling. It is worth the 18+ minutes to hear this tune. I would be negligent if I didn't suggest you give it a listen, maybe react to it. some of us will really appreciate it..... Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant - Original 1967 Recording
Watch William S. Burroughs "A Thanksgiving Prayer." He was a poet, storyteller who was on every three-letter list of government. Please, react to my late friend and poet Walter Lacey, reciting Langston Hughes. Let America Be America Again, performed by Walter T. Lacey, written by Langston Hughes. You are beautiful my man.
Wrote and recorded this album in 2 weeks Hand in hand went music and the rhyme The Captain and the Kid stepping in the ring From here on sonny sonny sonny, it's a long and lonely climb
Beautiful choice. This song is easily overlooked on an album full of great songs! I think you are right on the backwards guitar lead; but no, this is not a first. The Beatles did that on Revolver on several different songs back in 1966.
I think I can give some context to this sound. Elton and his band had been weaving orchestral and electric guitar beautifully from their beginnings (check out Caleb Q's weavings with Elton's piano) and this, especially at the time, kinda broke through the ceiling with it.
The orchestrations are breathtaking huh? You're listening to some great stuff. Elton John had another epic song called We All Fall in Love/Curtains from the album Captain fantastic. It's just as powerful as this. You react right at the points that you should react by the way!
"I've Seen That Movie Too" - Bernie Taupin I can see by your eyes you must be lying When you think I don't have a clue Baby, you're crazy If you think that you can fool me Because I've seen that movie too The one where the players are acting surprised Saying love's just a four letter word Between forcing smiles, with the knives in their eyes Well their actions become so absurd So keep you auditions for somebody Who hasn't got so much to lose 'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting That I've seen that movie too So keep you auditions for somebody Who hasn't got so much to lose 'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting That I've seen that movie too It's a habit I have, I don't get pushed around Stop twinkling you star like you do I'm not the blueprint For all of your B films Because I've seen that movie too The one where the players are acting surprised Saying love's just a four letter word Between forcing smiles, with the knives in their eyes Well their actions become so absurd So keep you auditions for somebody Who hasn't got so much to lose 'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting That I've seen that movie too So keep you auditions for somebody Who hasn't got so much to lose 'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting That I've seen that movie too So keep you auditions for somebody Who hasn't got so much to lose 'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting That I've seen that movie too So keep you auditions for somebody Who hasn't got so much to lose 'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting That I've seen that movie too

The entire album is a masterpiece
such an underrated song. one of my faves.
Off of one of the greatest albums in the history of music.
This album elevated rock to classical status. Classical

@AirDOGGe, ahhh! Sweet Painted Ladies. Duh

The depth of passion and exquisite musicianship make this one of my Elton favorites. I wish more people knew about it, but I don’t mind it being a well-kept secret.
Possibly my favourite Elton track also.
This along with Madman Across the Water are my 2 favorite Elton tunes
Goodbye yellowbrick road was a masterpiece
@brendastanford9545, IS a masterpiece.
this guy is a legend.
He was really big when i was a lil kid. Yellow Brick Road is a must for any rock fan.

Elton's ability to match melody to mood is astounding sometimes. I would do "All the girls live Alice" - It's a banger
Elton owned the 70's, even with all the awesome music we had. I wore out 2 copies of this album before CDs came out.
Early 90s covers too
@ememnicholas565, I believe from ‘70 to ‘75, he had more chart success than any other artist.
Great album. Every song a killer.
This is one of my favorite songs from this album. Obviously Elton’s piano playing/ vocals are great but Nigel Olson’s drumming is done so good and helps set the mood. Big influences on me as a young knucklehead drummer
Dee Murray on bass and David Johnson on guitar Great song.
S o many hidden gems on this album.
I had this album on last weekend. Love Nigel's drum play with Elton's piano on this song and "The Ballad of Danny Bailey."
This album is pure magic. 💖
EXCELLENT CHOICE ! Great Song 🎵 You will definitely enjoy "All the young girls love Alice" It's on this Album !
All the Girls Love Alice.

I had forgotten this song. thanks for helping me get reacquainted with it
Yes that was Davey's backward guitar. You honed it on it perfectly
I try to sort of duplicate it on the keyboard. Kindof impossible.
@Pait728, Davey on guitar, and what was the bass players name? The bass on Love Lies Bleeding is just off the chain.
It's a pleasure to see reactors going back deeper into the early Elton John albums. That's where the greatness is.
Your analysis of this powerful song was just what I expected, knowing you will like this one and have a comprehensive reaction, as usual.

bravo pour ce choix , cette chanson est un monument !..génial.
"Feelin' Those Moments"... That's what it's all about, why we call it Classic Rock.
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics as usual, then said “hey Elton, put some music to this, Will ‘ya?”.
Freaking amazing duo.
The orchestration in this is just incredible. Also, the Guitar solo is actually being played backwards. I think that was a suggestion by the Gus Dudgeon, the producer. Davey pulled it off beautifully.
My high school girlfriend gave me this double album for my 17th birthday in 1973. I know every word and every note on this double album. It is genius.
Mad man across the water
Totally
I remember seeing this live on the tour for this album. I still get goosebumps. Great choice! There are a lot of great songs on this album.
I play this song everyday on a keyboard. Still gives me chills.
This my favorite off this album, Harmony is another good track.
One of the best albums ever

Another great dbl song match
Yeah but on Captain Fantastic the song" We all fall in Love"?? That's an amazing tune.
ONE OF ELTON'S & BERNIE BEST
This song is friggin brilliant. I got to see him do this live at MSG NYC in 2013.
The basic premise of the song is. .don't try to play me for a fool.....bc I'm hip to your games.
Bernie Taupin wrote all the lyrics and sent them to Elton who made the songs...amazing!
Great deep cut. Love it.

I can see by your eyes you must be lying

'Cause you can tell by the lines I'm reciting
That I've seen that movie too
It's a habit I have, I don't get pushed around
Stop twinkling you star like you do
I'm not the blueprint
For all of your B films
Because I've seen that movie too
The one where the players are acting surprised
Saying love's just a four letter word
Between forcing smiles, with the knives in their eyes
Well their actions become so absurd
