  • This Small Block Chevy 350 is 190 HP stock. I researched all the modifications I had completed on my truck and researched what the internet said how much HP each would add. Either advertised on the parts or on a random forum. Hooker long-tube headers - 20 HP, dual exhaust - 15 HP, TBI spacer - 18 HP, bigger high-flow air cleaner - 5 HP, removing air cleaner spacer - 12, Holley Pro-Jection Intake Manifold (PN:300-66) - 30 HP, TBI injector spacer - 13 HP, 15 PSI fuel regulator spring - 22 HP, smoothing out the TBI face “ultimate TBI Mod” - 12 HP, Total HP gain - 147 HP. I know HP gain doesn’t work like I’m estimating only about 30 HP gain total.
A few weeks ago I found a small coolant leak around the intake of my Small Block Chevy 350. After ignoring it for a while then misdiagnosing it. I thought the intake gasket on my engine was leaking coolant. I ordered new intake gaskets, and they were back ordered for a while. While these parts were backordered I was allowed to ponder. I eventually ordered all the recommended parts to make a SBC TBI gain more HP. I took advice straight from the internet and ordered all the parts to make my engine run at peak performance. Let’s see if the mods actually do anything. This video isn’t a ‘How to’ video, it’s a ‘how I did it’ video, it’s for entertainment purposes only.

Easiest way to install a distributor is set the balancer to the desired initial timing on the tab, install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the number 1 terminal.
This is with the engine on the number one cylinder of course!
When you start it up, check timing with brown wire unhooked.

I bought special intake manifold for 98 vortec engine 350 it's running great ari gap intake manifold. The 98 vortec engine from a van I put it in my 89 GMC Sierra 3/4 . It literally picks up the front end up on the air. Ya I bolted shorty headers to stock y pipe

I spaced the throttle body but used factory regular spring on a 92 GMC Sierra. Used new fuel injectors.

I think that's the way to go I removed the heavier spring

    • @etmesi

@@crescenthammer I used the longest new spring that is still a tad shorter than the original, truck runs way better, together with new fuel injectors. I have rebuilt this throttle body before but never changed the spring. I would start it cold and the engine pulsated, so I began to blame the fact I never changed the spring. After installing every sensor I could find, I missed the knock sensor, changing that solved a lot of running rich issues. I changed the Intake Manifold gaskets 7 times, the 7th I did myself using OEM gaskets with NO solicoln. Fel Pro gasket company said do not use ours we do not make gaskets for a 92 GMC Sierra, they fit but the rear ports are not made for that truck. Both Edlbrock and Fel Pro said do not use silicoln, very interesting, but hay the truck runs perfect.

Unfortunately, this engine has done as much as it can. She has let go, and I'm doing an LS Swap. Basic, I know. I'd like to rebuild and use this engine for another project, but due to budget restrictions, I'll have to ask this engine.

Bro, that's just dumb to say that.
You can get great results with few mods, correct tuning and throw in the cheap transmission accumulator 1-2 & 3-4 upgrades.
End of the day these are farm trucks but you can have a lot of fun in them for cheap.

Could be the marketing dept.,s , promised hp. gains , are somewhat misleading and extreamly opptomistic ,should be taken with a grain of salt ? I too did most of what you did ,TBI wise , and had an underwelmd result. Got better results with an MSD system install and all new sensors . Gained a 7 mpg. inprovement . Had to go back to pretty much stock on the TBI except to rebuild it,was getting a "chug-chug "coughfing on the highway otherwise. Could be I need a few more tweeks to be able to get the spacer and injector risers to do what was promised .I,ll keep tinkering . Have another set of ' swirl ' (193 ) heads and TBI aluminum intake I,ll be porting and maybe ad a low rpm cam for my "92 350 K-1500 -700 R trans. Shooting for more low rpm power and 23 mpg,s at highway speeds .

    • @crescenthammer
      @crescenthammer  11 місяців тому +1

O absolutely, if a bolt on part says it will gain you X amount of more hp. They added that part and then had their team work on tuning, put high octane fuel, great dyno conditions, etc. You can't just add up the hp gains.
The biggest thing to help my truck would be to start running 91 octane, adjust timing for 91 octane, and tune it for the modifications. With the stock tune and running 87 cause it's cheapest is killing my hp. I didn't do that cause the cost vs. benefit. Someday I hope to completely rebuild the truck.

@crescenthammer dyno tests are more in the 160 range actually. I'm thinking about doing a turbo build on my tbi. Turns out the stock tbi system can handle about 8psi or more with just a different pump. I just did the pump yesterday. Next most important part is the fuel bypass regulator that runs off boost pressure I believe. I think 1 to 1 or 4 to 1 is good and zero degrees base timing. Rn Mines at 10 degrees base timing.

@2015_Rubicnn the 350 is a good engine. You can make decent power with it. But the tbi max I want to say is 350 at the crank. So knowing that I wanted to go 4 barrel and/or efi. To rebuild everything, I just made a decision to go with the ls.
