    So how do you heat treat and what temperature? I am looking forward to seeing the end results, interesting stone pattern.

    Think the term you were looking for was incipient fracture for why the piece broke the way it did.

      Glad to help, this stuff does look really cool though. It would look pretty wild fully worked if it responds well and it really does look like the grain structure of some kind of palm.

      Petrified woods that's not opalized is going to take a very long time to heat treat.. it's best to do just what your doing right now as The grane u call cortex just crumbles on impact.. your doing good and yes it's petrified palmwood years ago on the north side of the Columbia River in Washington State there were many native sites and most all the artifacts were made from petrified wood..I ve found many of those in the upper grasslands in the Oregon area most of the points..blades knifes were opalized wood with some of the most beautiful colors etc and workmanship I've ever seen..but a very high heat treat is a given for petrified that's not opalized**opalized wood is just like obsidian and it does nap alot better!!!!.
