This video took place on January 14th, 2017. Big thanks to cal4wheel.com/ (California Four Wheel Drive Association) for putting together this wonderful event.
Cal4Wheel guided us through. We took off from Grass Valley, and headed up near Yuba Gap on Interstate 80. We started up a big hill and took a trail that ran between Interstate 80 and Highway 20. I do not have the exact trail name, but it was somewhere around 39.305671, -120.665152 and the closest city would be Nevada City, CA.
Tires are 255/75-17 (32.2") BFG K02s with a 1.5" MFC lift. We ran at 8psi. (For all wondering, yes you have to grind the pinch welds.)

Great video of the KL in action! You guys make KL owners proud!!! These things are quite beastly!!!
Probably the best video I’ve seen with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Thanks for putting this together!
Thank you!
The best video on what this vehicle can do. I have to get some mods for mine
Great video. Nice to see a good overlanding video without music.
Great video. Looked like a beautiful day in the snow. Love the KL and nice to see one out on the trails.
Awesome of the Trailhawk in action, keep up the good work! 👍🏻
Great Video! I would have loved to go along with my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk.
Keeping up with the old school wranglers but with modern comfort. Not bad man. Good vid.
kept me entertained for a bit ... adding to favs
Awesome videos! We were on the market for a cherokee and found a 2014 that we liked. Can't wait to watch all of your videos!
Thanks!
i realy like the jeep! thanks for the video :)
Thanks for watching!
Nice man! People don't give the Trailhawk any credit. Check out the off-road snow vid I made with mine. Great idea to attach cam to vehicle in front of you! So you ran 4Low Snow mode with locker?
I do love the feeling of being doubted and then showing what the Trailhawk can do. And yeah, 4Low with locker at 8psi. I actually think I kept it in Auto. Snow mode makes you start in 2nd gear, so I don't think I wanted to do that. I think snow mode is more for driving driving through a blizzard or over a mountain pass.
@@1500Overland I think snow mode is mainly for commuting on streets with heavy snow on the ground. When crawling it would be useless
@@rickymacqueen6690 - Yes, well those situations as well. And yes, useless when crawling, especially the starting in 2nd gear part lol
@@1500Overland what brand is your front Bush bar? Looking to get something similar for my 18 :)
@@rickymacqueen6690 It's Rocky Road Outfitters, Here you go: www.rocky-road.com/jeep-cherokee-kl.html
:)
looks like fun day out
I love my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. It is currently stock, but I would like to put the lift in it so I could run the trails in Moab! Nice Video!!
Thank you! Hope you get out there with the Trailhawk and have some fun! :)
Dobinson lift with the mfc lift combined
Great video of your awesome jeep. My Forester would not do that trail....
Super duty or F150?
F150 super duty!
Nice !!!
Anyone know who makes that front grille guard? Looks good!
Thanks, they are from RRO and you can view them here: www.rocky-road.com/jeep-cherokee-kl.html
@@1500Overland thank ya kindly
Great video!!
My 2017 latitude was stuck right off the bat soon as I hit snow.
That trail hawk is hanging with the Wranglers 😃
What does it really matter Jon Hettrick
Thinking about lifting my 2017 KL TH 2 inches.
Your vehicle looks sharp as hell. What lift did you use, and how has it been performing for you so far? Pros and cons?
Great freaking video xD
Thanks! It's the MFC lift and it's been performing great. I tore both front CV boots, and I asked the mechanic if he thought Jeep might be using a weeker material versus the wrangler, but he said it appears to be the same so I attribute that to the lift. A little annoying but nothing that would have stopped me from doing it.
@@1500Overland The Wrangler does not use CV boots. It has a solid axle, cv's are for independent axles.
@@1500Overland The boots are tearing due to the new angles that the lift is putting on the axles. The Toyota 4Runner has the same issue which is why they recommend a front axle 1" axle drop kit to help keep the axles straight instead of at severe angles.
@@toddhoffmaster6057 - Not sure why I never thought of the independent axles, good point. As for a drop kit, no such thing existed back when I owned this KL.
PS: Do F-150 Super Duties exist?
It was so long ago, but I think it was a F-250 Super Duty, said the wrong thing. Either way, it was way too big to be in the group! Thanks for watching!
What guard with lights is on the front?
I think I'm gonna pick one up instead of a tacoma, I like the "buggy" look and it seems like a decent allrounder (unlike my wrangler which doesn't do highways well). Are these things reliable?
I owned it for 4 years and it was incredibly reliable, no issues at all except at the end when the frame bent RIP
What kind of radios were used on this trip? CB or Ham or Commercial radios? Thanks.
The group (CA4Wheel) has leaders transmitting on CB and Ham. I have a CB.
OK, thanks. CA4Wheel looks like a good group to belong to.
Great video, and I love the KL Trailhawk! Just upgraded mine from the 2015 to the new 2019 model, and I'm planing on building one hell of an overland vehicle out of it. :)
goooooood job
enjoyed this ;) +1
We have a Cherokee Trailhawk too... I wish I could lift it, but all aftermarket development has stopped that I'm aware of =(
You can order the lift I have right now! mfcoffroad.com
HMBxplore sky hazard also makes a lift kit for KL's
drive prius bro. this is big for you. :)
Great video! I'd like to see some testing of any rub on tight corners or anything putting real pressure on the bump stops. I wanna get the 2.5 inch lift from MFC with 32s, but not sure if it's a rub fest.
I get rubbing at full lock. Just barely. I just learned to keep it about an inch away from full lock and it's fine. Other than that, you just have to trim the pinch welds and some of the plastic. With all that I never experience rubbing even at articulation. I will try to get some videos soon, I recently did an event but it was impossible to film on the trail we were on. Soon! Thanks for watching :)
I'd love to see a video of what that looks like in your wheel well. I'd you're looking for video ideas, that one isn't out there anywhere.
Ok I'll try it. We may do a Rubicon run with all KLs coming up in 3 weeks... Not sure if I'm up for it, but we may try! All lifted with rock rails but it's a tall order!
Did they make any lift kits or led off road lighting for these jeeps yet
MFC, Hazard Sky, Dobsons, Rough Country (leveling kit). There are others I'm sure but those are the more popular kits.
Did you use standard tires the car came with or some winter ones?
The standard tire size is 29" and these are 32" - The jeep has to be lifted to fit them. They are wider, 255/75-17
@@1500Overlandthank you. I guess stock version would have problems then in that terrain.
the guy near you sounds so high
Really enjoying your videos! I'm in the process of looking for a KL myself and your videos are helping me make my decision. My only main concern is the transmission.
Through looking at reviews and other people's comments and videos it seems that the 9spd automatic is a bit troublesome. What are your opinions about it? My plans are for the KL to be my dd, with off-roading similar to what you've been doing occasionally 1-2x a month. My current car is a 2011 Honda Civic SI. Going to a KL is a big difference in vehicle.
So very curious what your honest opinion is about the transmission. Would you recommend the tow package with the additional oil coolers?
The transmission has been perfect for me. Never even a slight problem. It has happened, but your chances of getting one with a bad transmission are fairly low and it has a 100k mile transferable powertrain warranty. Tow package, you'll have to make the call but I think it's a good idea as it let's you do other things as well like a heavy hitch gate. The extra cooling is really great for me when I offroad in 90+ degree weather. You can hear those fans roar but they're doing their job. I recommend the cooling package for sure. I would recommend every option except for the tech package which is unnecessary.
Also, think about getting one that was BEFORE the start/stop. I don't have it but people complain about it a lot... for every car that has it lol
In fact with the factory installed trailer hitch you will also automatically get a 3:517 diff ratio instead of 3.215 wich would give you a litle more torque availlable in any mode at a starting line!!
Can you tell us about the brush bar and lights on the front of your Trailhawk. Are they Jeep products? They look good on your vehicle.
Thanks, the bar is from Rocky Road Outfitters (www.rocky-road.com/jeep-cherokee-kl-bumper-kit.html) and the lights on the bar are Warn (they are listed on that same page). The A pillar lights are Rigid Industries.
OK, thanks for the info. I'm swaying back and forth between buying a new Trailhawk or a new Wrangler. I like both of them.
Get a Wrangler Unlimited. Especially now that it rides so nice and has heated seats and steering wheel. I just bought a RAM 1500. Both the RAM and Wrangler are brand new redesigns, the Trailhawk just had its mid-cycle refresh, meaning it has 3-4 years until it will be the old model.
Did you drop the air pressure that low for the snow? Or do you always run that low off road?
Just for the snow. I usually run around 15-18psi for rocks.
KL Overland 255/75/17?
Yup!
Love my Trailhawk but, this is like taking a pea shooter to a gun fight.
Keith Moriyama you would think so but i’d say it did its job
THIS IS OFF ROAD !!!???... :(
LOL no it's not really offroading. I did say to my friend "ready for some offroading" at the beginning of the video but we didn't really know what to expect. Like I said in another comment, I've stopped doing these "fun runs" with groups, it always ends up being one big traffic jam. 2-4 trucks is ideal. I also moved to Nevada and sold this Cherokee. :-)
nice
top love
It is not a car it is a jeep. It is a Jeep thing!!
liked
No Shit its not a wrangler? Spoiler alert.
Chris Petersen what do you mean?
I get this is an older vid...but that f350 with the right mods would have stomped everyone of those jeeps.....so chill out on the passive aggressive shit talk...
where is this trail at i live in sonora and would like to know, thank you.
I wish I could give you a better answer, but it's been lost. All I know is it's somewhere around 39.305671, -120.665152 between Hwy 80 and 20
I was not impressed by the trailhawk. While offroading in the Montana Mountain snow my buddy got stuck in 3 spots in his Cherokee Trailhawk that my Wrangler drove right through with no issue. We both had BFG K02s aird down
I sold it for a RAM a few years ago as the trailhawk was not as capable as I wanted.
@@1500Overland The RAM will still serve you well at least now when you go off-roading you can pull a trailer behind you LOL. Smart move though even though base Wrangler will drive right through things that the Trailhawk gets stuck in
@@CWWJR The RAM hasn't let me down yet in two years! I love that the rooftop tent (got the hardshell Tuff Stuff Alpha) fits over the bed so there's no extra aerodynamic drag, and I have a nice pull-out storage system for the bed. It fits my needs as a "glamping" overlander. That being said, we preordered the Bronco lol
Where can I get one of those deflators? 0:33
That's the ARB E-Z Deflator. 4WheelParts and Amazon have them!
Did you lift this? if so which one and what tires are you running? Look to make some modifications to my KL
I have the MFC 1.5" lift with 32" K02s
How was the reliability of this vehicle?
Great for 4 years, then the frame bent and I don't even know on what obstacle, I didn't notice until I got back from a 2k mile overlanding trip. It was the driver's side front rail. Other than that, I don't think I ever had any other issue. I did abuse the crap out of it.
@@1500Overland Thats good to hear. So no transmission issues or oil consumption? Did you have the V6? Thinking about trading in my 2008 GC for a Cherokee Trailhawk.
@@clarda1 No transmission issues or oil consumption. I did have the V6.
1500 Overland how was the gas mileage on the highway? Thanks
