    I've been shooting my crop sensor 70D using full frame, L series lenses for years. For my budget, it's always made more sense to invest in glass rather than a full frame body. This is far and away the best opportunity I've seen to finally make the jump. Thanks for the great review! Pre-order is in. 😁

    If you’re going to test it with heavy lenses, get the EG-E1 mini grip. That improved the ergonomics with the EF100-400 and RF100-500 immensely.

    Currently selling my 6Dii. I want a lighter setup for my backpacking setup. For the telelens it is clearly going to be RF100-400 - a clear no-brainer. But for the body, I am struggling with so many options. I do like the idea of R8 being so lightweight. Concerned about the need of extra batteries, which may reduce the weight benefit. Each battery is 45g. If I carry 2 more batteries, the weight in my backpack stacks :)
    The other problem is that currently in my region it costs 1650$. So it is more expensive comparing to R7, and is not far away from R6 (mark1). But both cameras are rather heavy to my taste.
    Then I also like the idea of R10, being even lighter with the ability to attach 18-150 lens making a nice lightweight all-round setup. But going from FF to APSC is little bit concerning to me.
    I shoot stills 90%, with wildlife backpacking photos, occasional astro, landscapes, portraits and kids. For a 'normal' lens for an R8 I would love to see a pancake (something like 40/2.8), but it's unfortunately not yet available. And I am certainly aware of adapters, but I don't wish to use them for the obvious weightsaving reason, which is very important during backpacking. For an R10 I could see using 32/1.4, which is also not available and not clear whether Canon will ever export this lens from the M mount.
    Everything is so messed with so many options and hard decisions :D

    Well I am looking forward to your full review. I am hoping in the future to get some better gear and each of these reviews help me to see how these cameras perform in the field. And you keep the reviews realistic which is important for me to get a good feel of the gear your review. At the moment I am just really starting to love my old Canon 5D classic. I was given that camera a few years back, but never really used it enough to see how good it is. But now I am kind of leaning a little more on that camera than my Canon Rebel T5. In the coming months I hope to use what I have and save up to get better gear.

I think that is what I am trying to focus on more. Getting good pictures in camera. Being able to trust the camera more, gives me rest and also lets me be able to focus on other things while taking pictures. That is one thing I would love about having something like the R8, the super good autofocus and eye tracking. Its just one less thing to worry about. Im torn between picking up a r10 because its just a nice price and feature layout, plus I have ef lens's and would just need an adapter.
    But the r8 is maybe 80% more in price but the features are kind of wild, other then the battery life which you can fix with a external battery or
    more batteries. Its a full frame, creamy depth, great low light iso performing, and an insane AF system unlike anything I've seen.

    Looking forward to your review. Considering get an all-round camera for wildlife and landscape, but that battery might be an issue. I'm hoping Sony comes out with an A7IV update with higher mechanical and electronic fps. In your opinion is the electronic on the non-stacked sensor good for fast action? I'm thinking hummingbirds or herons/kingfishers fishing without alot of distortion.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  Рік тому +1

      Yes the sensor is very good. I have a review on the camera (r6MKII which is same sensor) and there are a bunch more videos on the r6mkii sensor and the rolling shutter is not an issue. BUT hummingbirds are small so the 24.2 mp sensor your not going to be able to aggressive crops.. so there's that to think of (if you crop a lot)

    I personally see the R8 as somewhere in between general/universal photography and videography with a touch of wildlife/sports capabilities.
    But since i own the R7 already (and was a RP long time user) all i really would love is a uncropped and nice 4k60 which the R7 has only in crop mode.
    If i would have still the RP i would probably tend towards the R8 and just accept expensive lens prices and a higher weight to carry, but since i got used to APS-C again with the R7 i just prefer the crop/additional range.

    This camera has muddied the waters for me and you seem willing to make a recommendation so i'll ask. I shoot small birds and do crop a fair amount. Am using R7 with RF 100-500. In summers light can be an issue when in woods under canopy. Have always wanted to try FF camera. If I can get good used R5 for same price as R6ii which should I go for or should I go for the R8? I do very little video but like to take nice pics for the old ladies to oh an ah over on FB..thnx

    • @WILDALASKA

      So for small in frame/far away and full frame you will want the r5 mo (45). As you can do a 50% crop easily. with the 24.2 you will not be able to crop near that much and have any detail left. The R7 gets you closer and more mp on the bird, so you don't have to crop as much but still can.
      So in summary if you re-compose or crop a lot then the R3, 6, 6MKII would not be the best camera.
      I see used R5's for 2.5k in the market.
      You're still going to have the same light issue as the lens is your roadblock at 7.1 min aperture. Your going to need. a faster lens for more light. and that's the $$$ issue :(

  • @donk8292
    @donk8292 Рік тому

    As far as readout speed, it's stacked sensors - not BSI sensors - that have the fastest readout speed and little or no rolling shutter. BSI sensors have not shown any readout speed advantage over FSI sensors.

    Hi Scott, thanks for an interesting analysis !! You're the first I saw who mentions the missing sensor protection when switching lenses, which is an insurance I do fancy having. It also seems the buffer is about half the size of the R6ii. Personally I'd miss the joystick in cases I'd shoot a waterfall or landscape. And on the R5/6 I program the 'set' button in the mid of the back dial to return the focus point to the center. But I also prefer reviewing images (if I do so) through the EVF and when zooming the joystick is really useful to position the zoomed image.
    Having said this, I fully agree the R8 offers great value for money and it will make good sense for your third body. But I do see the R8 more aimed at landscape & street photography or vlogging, while depending on the needs the R6ii and R7 could make more sense for wildlife/birders who only get one camera.
    Using the R6 I was shooting cRaw to one card, and jpg as backup to the other. On the R5 I've sadly had to dumb down the jpg to their smallest size because otherwise the SD could not keep up with CFxB card.

    • @WILDALASKA

      I think i saw the sensor bit from Peter McKinnon. And the lack of joystick is overcome it looks like byb different types of taps on the back lcd screen. it will be interesting to see how that works. As far as buffer most i saw stated it was about the same as the r6mkII, but we shall see ;)
