What an amazingly detailed review. Thanks for all the work you put into this. Wow. I have had the R7 for a few months as well, as a partner for my R5. I enjoy seeing how other people make out with the R7 to see if they do things differently and can learn how to get even more out of mine. Despite the “spec sheet snipers” that dumped on the R7 every chance they go in YY comments, this is an amazing camera that I really enjoy using. I figure that most of the people who trashed it have never even touched it, let alone use it, and we’re probably never going to buy one regardless. Then there are the people who expected to get a $6500 camera for $1500… All your observations are bang on.
Thank you Scott! I’ve had the R7 for a year now. Although I initially thought I should have spent more to get the R6 Mark II instead, I’ve since heard many comments (including yours) on how good the R7 is. I am mostly into landscape photography, but I do wildlife photos from time to time and I appreciate the additional reach and sensor resolution. I also came to realize that, for landscape shots, to compensate for the narrower angle and the slightly lower dynamic range of the cropped sensor, I can do panoramas and stitch images in post-processing, and use exposure bracketing when necessary. I totally agree about the controls/buttons placement. I am used to it now, I like it and I would be lost on camera configured differently. Great extensive review!
Phenomenal review Scott. I've had a few strange configuration quirks with mine but it seems to have recovered and continues to work as advertised. Completely agree that for what the R7 costs, the technology and capability are unbeatable.
Great video! Nice presentation! Love the 100-400 EF 2 combo with this camera for wildlife. A great replacement for my 7D 2 which was a dream for wildlife!
Again, another nice video, you keep pushing them out :) . So glad I pre-ordered this camera and using it with my Tamron 150-600 G2 for a couple of months now. Coming from a DSLR (70D and 7DII) the mirrorless system absolutely has / had a learning curve for me, but once you get the hang of it it is truly amazing and I get a lot more keepers than on my 7DII, the AF-system really is a game changer. Still struggling a bit with post-processing, but that's more a problem of my laptop that is over 10 years old. Saving up now for a decent PC with a faster / better graphics card, I'm sure it will speed-up the post-processing. Thank you Scott, for all the time you must have put in those videos!
Thanks and glad the video is helpful. The MacBook Pro 14 and 16 and just the base model are fantastic. And in dxo I went from 45 sec an image on my gaming pc with 4900 and and 2080 graphics to 5 seconds and image on the latest duo pureraw update. My model is the 16" MacBook Pro 1TB 16Mb and its handles LR, DXO, PS, and final cut for editing like a champ.
Not sure about that ;) but THANKS. It's taking a lot of effort and time and I enjoy make the videos and interacting with everyone. So great to hear that folks are liking the content.
Just viewed your R7 video using the camera for 3 months. The video was outstanding and helped me decide on a purchase of the R7. It is May 1 and Canon just listed the R7 at $1;400. As you stated at $1;400 it can’t be beat; unless you purchase a $5;500 camera with a better sensor. I also enjoyed how you showed us Alaska between talking about the R7. It made me want to be there instead of Kentucky. I watch your videos often and enjoy your honesty and common seance approach to issues.
Thanks for the kind words. Yes its a great camera especially for the price. And come on up, Alaska is a great playground and a photographers paradise :)
@@WILDALASKA yes sir, came off of the body completely. No excessive force applied, it was after a day of shooting, being flicked on to format the cards at my desk. Just came right off. CPS provided me with a loaner while the warranty covered the cost. I’ve felt a little like a beta tester with this RF gear but still elect Canon for my professional work.
Good time review and very fair with comparison to other canon camera..I got the r7 last month from 90d I am sure I will see a great improvement .thank you
Thank you for the effort and quality put in this video! Nice, clear and honest review. Can't wait to upgraded to R7, your video strongly reinforced the decision.
Great review, thanks a lot! And finally one that doesn't bash on the camera for not being as good as a 4500-6000$ one! Of course it is not. You show what it is and how it performs and put it into the perspective of the camera "only" costing 1400$, so thanks again! Cheers
I was thinking of getting an a9 used for between $1800 and $2000 since it has a stacked bsi sensor and it's cheap but when I saw this I was sold instantly and I don't regret it at all.
I'm still considering used a9 vs R7. Don't know if I should get R7 since it will be my only body for the next many years. Where as a9 I can sell it as soon as Sony releases something else that I might like
I do some bird and high school sport photography and your video was great in my decision to buy the R7. Great info from someone who used the system in harsh conditions and gave honest descriptions of the good and weak sides. Thank you very much.
Scott, I ordered the Small HD cage while watching. Thanks. I, too, have big hands. I hope this helps my grip. You might want to check out Small HD's monitor. I have the Action 5, affordable. But still gives 2 nits of light, needed outdoors so you can see it. I find it to be the ultimate solution to composition that is tough to see in the EVF. What else is cool is you can lean it down forward so you can still see what you're shooting even if your camera is near the ground which helps. The main reason for me, though is the fact that you can compose your shot way better.
Great video , I’ve had the r7 for about two months , I use it as a back up for my r5 and let me tell you for awhile I forgot that I had an r5 just because the r7 is an amazing camera
Great review on the R7. I have been using a R6 and 90D. I have been making it for wildlife shot with the rf 100-400 and an old EF 70-200. The R5 too pricey for me especially since I clumsy outdoors. R7 seem just the right price and size. BTW great advice handling a moose shot. We shot moose in Minnesota. They were easily irritated and faster than you think 🤗
Thanks for the thorough video and useful info! Owned the R7 for 2 months and tried to shoot kingfishers at close distances. Unfortunately it didn’t work out because of the following: 1. Rolling shutter/ distortion in the images 2. Vibration induced using slow shutter speeds (when using mechanical shutter in particular) 3. Inadequate buffer (had to use cRAW in order to get around 40 images in a roll) Such a pity that it looked a perfect compliment to my R3 on paper but didn’t really live up to my expectations at least for my use.
I think all those issues can be worked around d as I shoot kingfishers a lot also in electronic shutter. 1. this is determined on how you are shooting. If you're whip panning then ether left the bird fly through your shot as a slower pan and other techniques or shoot faster and higher fps to get more keepers amongst the rolling shutter toss outs. 2. I wouldn't shoot kingfishers at slow shutter speeds - 1/1600 up to 1/3000 is wet I shoot them at. 3. you have to use a v90 card and that's min 75 shots up to 120. But I like your info and experience. its good to hear.
I bought the R7 a few days ago with intent to try it then return it . SOLD This camera is incredible. A keeper. Only problem so far is it just shuts off for no reason. Need to pop the battery out to restart
Great review Scott. Have had my R7 for 3 months and have had all the same issues except for the rolling shutter and hitting the buffer I’m pretty good at doing small bursts. Looking forward to the next vid. Thanks 👀👁
Adapted my settings with help from your videos I now have my R7 set up perfectly for me - thank you. Also bought the Smallrig cage which gives the camera extra heft and makes it sit better in my hand... and gives added protection. Thank you for your videos, love 'em
Really enjoyed the review. I was wondering how you thought the R7 would work with the Canon EF 400mm 5.6 Non IS prime and the Canon EF 500 4.0 NON IS prime?
I finally got to hold an R7 at B&H. My hands aren't as broad as yours but my fingers are "palm a basketball" long; the deep grip still fits me fine. I have no problem working within the few limitations it has. I don't need an R7 but I want one. Maybe next year.
I enjoyed watching last week the alaska video with you and your uncle. And this info. helps me because I'm quite sure I'm upgrading to this R7 from my 80D. Thanx
In a quandary, I have always shot Nikon, and currently use Z6ll, which does not do well on wildlife. Just a hobbyist so Z9 is not in my budget. This Canon R7 looks affordable and seem to do well, so I am considering a change. Love your in depth videos.
I agree with your analysis of the rolling shutter. I shot the same scene with & without a tripod & the imagoes from the tripod were far better than the hand held.
After a while humming and arring I’ve just taken the plunge so will use the R7 for the extra reach with the 500f4is and keep the r6 for closer stuff and landscapes an astrophotography an stuff 👍👍👍
I always appreciate your down-to-earth approach and thoughts. I am enjoying the R7 a ton and have gotten a lot better at it with your camera setup and advice! Thanks! I did have an issue where my partner and I both had to send our R7's back due to the LCD and EVF cutting out randomly. We realized it was most likely the battery compartment not holding them securely. Ours both had the battery pretty loose inside. We ended up just replacing them, but the new ones held the batteries more firmly and I haven't had an issue yet. A side note about the LCD stuff: There is a sensor, like cell phones have, that will black out the front LCD when your face moves up to it. It's a feature, but if you don't put your hand in the right spot, it will black it out while moving hands around by the LCD panel. It annoyed me at first but I got used to it quickly. Thanks again for the great content!
the blackout is by design on the lcd. Once something passes in front of that señor it stops the lcd so you don't change something accidentally. you can change this behavior if needed in the settings.
@@WILDALASKA oh yeah, that part is definitely by design. That was not what I was referring to as the reason we returned it. I forgot too mention that while shooting and looking through the EVF, it would suddenly have nothing but horizontal color bars on the full screen... then blackout. That is definitely not supposed to happen :) I missed out on some photos due to this sadly.
Used 7d2 and 100-400 for many years with absolutely zero issues but probably reaching the end of the shutter life. Considering the r7 just based on price- reviews are all over the place, but seems being able to keep using the same lens is feasible with an upgrade to at least 15 fps. Don’t care at all about video so may be enough of an upgrade
Great video thankk you. I've had an R7 now for a month and I wasnt expecting too much but the technology races ahead of my other cameras, so much so that my 5D Mkiii and 7D Mkii haven't had much use since I got the R7. For birds in any situation it rarely fails to nail the shot. It's a joy to lose the extra weight of my other two bodies too. However the 5D Mkiii will always be my landscape camera!
I’m a sports shooter and found that gaffers tape is a godsend for keeping things in place. Try some on your hot shoe! Also, put some extra on your tripod/monopod to have on hand if needed. Love your channel. Just ordered the R7. Currently, using a couple of 1DX’s and a 5D4 and have a bunch of EF glass. Looking forward to trying my 400 F2.8 IS II with 1.4 extender on the R7.
of you will love that 400 3.8 with 1.4 and the r7. My 500 f4 loves the 1.4 and 2x with the r7. Ya I use the gaff tape for a lot of things on the camera. I did find on my bear trip in Katmai that the hot shoe doesn't mind rain much. But best not to tempt it again lol
Thank you, Sir! Great video. Down to the point, good pace, down to earth, no splitting hairs about unimportant stuff. And 100% in sink with my observations of the camera vs. R5 😂😂😂 Subscribing!
Excellent and well thought out video thanks Scott. It's interesting you reference Duade Paton who has done a really good video on the 'pulsing' issues that the R7 faces. He pretty much blames the sensor not being up to the level of the lens and I think he's quite possibly right. Tell me one thing though.... Does the R8 have better af than the R7?
The issue is the people are holding the AF button continually when the subject is not moving and the af is always hunting if you do that and it will move around at times as it is ALWAYS looking when you hold the af down. there's no issue with the r7 AF. get your af and then get off the button if you subject is staying within that focal plane. its the same on ALL the modern mirrorless cameras.
Excellent videos. Thank you for making them and taking the time and putting in the effort for folks out here. Debating the R8 at the moment as a fuji shooter. Not dropping fuji mind you but there is plenty of room for more cameras in the stable. Subscribed. Also, missing Alaska! We go up every year. It reminds me of my state, Maine, but on a larger scale. Once again, excellent job and thank you!
Superb video and agree with the review. The R7 is so good I won't ever go back to a dslr and the best birding camera I have ever used and used a 5DMKiv and a 7DMKii before
Very nice review. I have had my R7 about the same length of time as you have, though I doubt I have anywhere near as many images taken. I agree with your assessment. We do need to keep in mind the price of this camera. I am amazed we got a focus system this good at this price. I have been very happy with it. So far I haven’t had any issues. My RF 100-500 will be arriving soon, middle of next week. I bought it from Canons refurbished store so I saved a little bit. This means I will be selling my Sigma 150-600C.
Thanks. Yes its sad that the 3rd party don't work as well with the R series cameras. But looking at the bright side, by using OEM glass you know your getting the right math and engineering to go with the camera. Plus Canon makes good glass ;) wallet isn't happy but you will be lol
Only huge problem i have heard is with Sigma 150-600 contemporary pulsing focusing issue but you can fix this with camera settings and Sigma doc menu settings.
@@WILDALASKA That’s the plan! Your setup video made me realize how many settings I had changed on my R5, so it’s nice to have a step by step video for the R7.
As always, a great video Scott. Having recently retired at age 76 I have returned to a lifelong photography interest and preordered R7. Been using it since June 25. My main interest is wildlife but in actuality I have shot mostly landscape and, of course family (7 grandkids). I'm using 18-150mm kit lens and the Sigma 150-600mm. Tried some older EF lenses that I've had since the film days but find they do too much hunting on autofocus. Have it set up using Duade Patton's suggestions to reduce the Autofocus jumping. My biggest disappointment with the R7, which I haven't seen anyone comment about, is the following: At first I was anxious set up the C1, C2 and C3 "custom" modes for a quick way to access the many different setups for different situations. Then I found the limitation in these modes that, for me, make them useless. That is: they all use the Aperture "Av" Priority Mode; with C2 and C3 additionally using Program Av mode. They would be actually useful if you had a choice of different modes especially Manual and Tv or even F modes. The ideal would be if one could decide which mode to use right within the C1-C3 "custom" setups. As it is, I usually use Manual Mode. Am experimenting with setting up the "custom" Modes for other less demanding situations. That's my two cents worth. So, Canon, if your listening I love the R7 but this additional capability would make a great camera much better.
good info. I just have it in manual and adjust the triangle as needed. C1,2,3 for me would only be for maybe one with raw burst mode maybe. Other than that just using manual suits my needs from the way I have it set up. But everyone shoots different and needs different things :)
You can definitely set c1, c2, c3 to use manual. I have my R7 set for fast action on C1, portrait on C2, and landscape on C3. There’s so many options to change that it’s definitely beneficial (previous cameras I just shot in manual). To set C1 for example, turn the dial to M, make all the changes you want, and then go to Tools menu screen 6, select “Custom Shooting Mode (C1-C3) and then register settings. Select the mode you want to save it to (C1, C2, C3). You can also select auto update set if you want any changes you make while using those modes to auto save (otherwise, it’ll revert back to the original settings you saved when the camera turns off/on). Remember, video is done separate as well - so, for example I have my C1/C2 settings the same (4K60, no log, auto level on), but my C3 video is set to 4K60 crop instead. Hope that helps.
practice on things like ducks at your local duck pond or seagulls etc that aren't very eratic and then move up to some smaller eratic birds. it takes time t get good at it like anything else. Good luck
Upgraded recently from my 1200D to R7, quite a jump I will say. Getting used to a mirror less and your videos for AF, button setup (single spot/ whole area quick change), how to usage for pre burst mode have all been extremely useful to me. Thank you very much. An aside question, have you updated the firmware version to 1.1 on your R7? Is it essential to update it?
Yes when.the camera went in for service they updated the camera. The update looks to mainly have been the cloud raw processing stuff that ill possibly never use ;)
BTW. I use this with Sigma lenses A 18-35, A 50-100 and S 60-600 and have no problem in good light with AF. Old Sigma C 150-600 have some problems but this is not fully compatibile. Also I don't have serious problems with Tokina 14-20 but that is no challenge. On old Sigma 8-16 AF is a bit funky but that in no concern in a lens like that.
Hi. This is the second time I’ve watched this video. Great job. My question is about the black mamba cage. I know of that glaring flaw with the lens release button. But other than that do you find it stays tight on the camera body? I have read that one has to retighten it quite regularly. I’m asking you because as you said in your video that you really use your camera gear and don’t baby it. Keep up the great work. Brad.
Thanks for all your video's on the R7 I have found them to be great. I'm interested to know if you have changed any of the buttons from your initial set up in the R7 button set up video? Personally I found them to be great but still have an issue at times switching from spot focus back to auto animal eye detect or visa versa. I'm 99% sure that's a me issue though and not a camera issue.
you may just have a setting that's conflicting somewhere. In the full setup video from last week, it's why I started with resetting the camera back to factory settings before I started to make sure there's no ill affecting settings. and thanks for the compliment.
Thanks Scott for another great review. I really appreciate it. I have not used my r7 for anything but wildlife. Getting ready to take some landscapes on a tripod. Do u turn the ibis off when using a tripod? Thanks
What about shutter shock in MS mode. So many reviewers mentioned the effect of IQ due to the vibration caused by the shutter shock. If in fact that’s true then using in ES or MS is a problem. It’s what has made me pause in deciding if I should purchase it for birding. Thanks
I'm shooting all electronic at 15fps (haven't tried 30fps) and have noticed very little rolling shutter. Beautiful images. A few shots have been skewed when panning, but nothing I can't live with.
Great video. I have a 7D MK II and a 5D MK IV with the EF 100-400 MK II, do you think the R7 could be a worthy upgrade at least for the 7D for bird photography?
I own and use the 1DX2, the R5 with a battery grip and the R7. The only complaint I have with the R7 is the size. I managed to sort out the different buttons and control wheel layout, but I can't get comfortable with such a small camera. My hands is just too big. This has of course nothing to do with what the R7 can do and its performance but still. I'm disappointed that Canon wont give us a battery grip. For me the R7 and the 300mm 2.8 with or without a 1.4x is a close to perfect walk around wildlife combo IF I could get a decent grab to it. Ok, I know, this is bs. The R7 is a fantastic camera. The absolute best you can get for 1500 bucks!
I agree with the battery grip issue completely. and yes I have been looking for a 300 2.8 used but the market is just crazy with either no lenses out there and if they are the prices are insane.
We can hope some 3rd party manufacturer is listening and designing a battery grip for the R7. Vello and some others make them for other Canon, so it's pretty likely to happen. Shame on Canon for not designing the R7 to work with the BG-R10! 3rd party grips aren't ideal, on a camera like R7 would only have a shutter release button and an external wire to accommodate that... But would double battery capacity and give better balance with big lenses..
Hi! Love your videos and the in-depth technical information from your personal experiences, much appreciated! 😊 In one of your Videos you mention that the ISO performance in the R5 was about 1 stop better than the R7 and I was just wondering if using a speed booster on the R7 would make them about equal while also allowing for faster shutter speeds ? Is this something you would recommend? I have both cameras and use the speed booster on my 100-400 giving me an F4 lens at 400mm. Also how do you feel about the Canon 200-400 f4 with built in TC for wildlife photography with the R7 in mind and the Speed Booster ? Thanks! 😊
So the speed booster is going to make your lens wider to be more of the full frame focal range which kind of negates the crop advantage for wildlife. And if your doing that for long lenses id just get a full frame camera. Now if your shooting some wide angle stuff then ya I would use a speed booster. The 200-400 tc lens is a great lens. But doesn't really need a speed booster unless your wanting the 200 range vs 320 at the minimum.
Hi, which 500 mm is the one you are using on the r7? And you recommend to use the old 500mm f4 l or the 100-500 having AF and sharpness as the main point?
Still waiting for my R7. I see Canon is coming out with a Creator's Kit for the holidays, but they can't fill back orders for the body only! Guess there is more profit in kits! My local camera store, where I've had my preorder for months, is telling me not to expect it before the New Year (unless I want a kit, which they can get me next week). I think that's ridiculous!
excellent video thanks you .. i just change from the 90D to R7 .. but i think to change my sigma 150 600 for the canon 100 500 m but its expensive loll .. waht do you think ! its going too be way better ?
You can zoom in/out with buttons. I set a rear button to zoom to actual size (100%) where the camera achieved focus. I don't have to hit the play button first. If I hit this button, the front dial then zooms out and back in. Later in the video you mentioned your lens image stabilisation switch was off. From what I've read and seen in UA-cam, this means your IBIS was off too. If a lens has no IS, you control IBIS in the camera menu. However, if a lens does have IS, its switch turns IBIS on and off together with its own IS. I'll have to look into this when I get a chance.
ya its a bit confusing about that. I think you can only turn off IBIS but lens is switchable. I think regardless of lens off the IBIS still works. And at least it seemed to be fine. If I could handhold all this shots and get not image blur with that massive 11+ lb lens id be surprised ;) Usually have it on using mode 2 on the lens stab.
A great review here. For me it's all about image quality. What I'm wondering is, with birds, could there be any situation where this camera would give me a better image quality than my R5?
IQ wise if the bird in frame is exact same size, the r5 will win just due to full vs crop, but its very close. Now if you get more bird in frame with r7 vs the R5 then the R7 will win as its all about getting more megapixels on the bird which means more detail.
@@WILDALASKA I've watched it just now and it's a very good video - just what I was looking for. It looks like getting an R7 as a second camera for wildlife is a no-brainer. Thank you.
I consider this cage tor R7 but unlike the cage for GH6, this one seems not to encompass the whole bottom section of battery grip. In other words it seems not to extend down the front surface of the grip. Does it still provide resting surface for pinki finger? It is important to me, as I use it with very front-heavy lenses.
it doesn't full extend over the whole "pinky" are but does for part of it and it makes the grip section taller and wider. SO it kind of makes it have a better feel to me. "feel" is hard to describe ;)
Thanks for your review Scott. I'm at three week milestone with my R7 and still finding my way around. What ways do you charge your R7 batteries? Charging batteries with charger works fine but not so with USB-C cable option (want it when I'm out camping). Wondering if it's the camera or something I'm doing wrong?
You have to use a USB-C setup capable of power delivery, can’t just simply use any old USB-C cable and lug it in to your laptop. There are cheaper options but I use the Canon PD-E1 and it charges both my R5 and R7 just fine when I have a wall plug available. I use another setup with a power bank just fine too
@@aspotterabroad4145 Many thanks Spotter 😊 I was using my mobile phone/dongle cables so will look up Canon specs. Out of curiosity what power bank do you use and how many charges do you get from it?
what spotter said is correct and make sure you able is power delivery rated also. I usually just charge one at a time. I have 8 total batteries for the r5 an r7 so I usually have several charged and ready.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks for tip Scott. When I asked Canon same questions they did not explain all these things and instead recommended I send camera in for tech testing. I also just learned R7 camera software only allows more expensive Canon batteries to charge via USB-C method and will not permit third party batteries. I do wish Canon were more up front on these small but important details for a camera with short battery life.
Olympus (OM-System) OM-1 also does not have rolling shutter. I have just came from short walk with my family and my R7. I noticed that with electronic shutter even vertical movement of camera or the subject in the frame results in distortion. When i took a photo from my eye level of my 5-years old son walking toward me (so moving top-down in a frame - or maybe I just moved camera a little bit) image of his face become squashed. Like he was much chubbier than he actually is.
Ya that's the barrel roll during image click, but you will see if you have 15 or 30 fps that its not every frame. just a few where the camera movement and shutter/sensor collide. Good catch on the image warp/shift.
With cameras from the R7 to the R6 in quality and features I was wondering is the R7 the better photo quality or is the R6 better to deal with rolling shutter etc.? Thanx
R6 has faster sensor readout so will have less rolling shutter. But the higher mp, faster fps, and better AF, for me the R7 wins regardless of rolling shutter FOR wildlife and birds
I was ready to buy the Smallrig cage.... But one guy on a photo forum said he has it, and it did not add extra grip space for ones little finger... The biggest reason I wanted the cage. And it doesn't appear to widen the body on the front right bottom corner, from photos either ? I'm wondering if you have a different version of the cage ?
It makes the camera fill a little bigger. It does add a bit in space at bottom but very little. I use it more for add on points for mics, external recorders etc. as it’s dual use camera for stills and video
R7 is my first mirrorless camera after using the 7dmii. I can't get a good focused picture with any of my lenses. Any troubleshooting ideas? I reset it, but get tones of noise and blurry photos.
Great video, thanks! I love my R7 but there is one thing that bugs and I don't know if it's me or the camera. I use back button focus (AF On = Spot, * button = animal eye tracking), Spot Metering, and Servo AF. When I press AF On the camera focuses but then if I let go of the button the focus changes. Sometimes even when I keep pressing AF On it changes focus. It's almost like the camera is changing metering AND focus when I move the spot around. Shouldn't it change the metering but NOT the focus? I can't figure it out. Any suggestions?
@@WILDALASKA Nope. I thought maybe I had "continuous focus" enabled (I have it disabled on my R5), but the "continuous focus" option is not on the R7. But the R7 behaves as if it is on. Weird.
@@sheilawilliams6150 Yes, Canon changed the name of the feature called Continuous AF on the R5. On the R7 it is called Preview AF. Make sure you disable this annoying feature.
Sir good morning, I am a beginner shooting with MFT gear. Now I wish to switch over to Canon R7 for bird and wildlife. But I have two issues about lenses. No.1) will it be wise to pair canon R7 with canon 100-400 mm IS ii where I hope the max.aperture of 5.6 at 400mm is 2/3rd faster than 7.1 on RF lens. By which it will be drawing more light in thus allowing to reduce the ISO. 2) learnt in another video on UA-cam that focussing on R7 isn't good in shade or low light. Sir can you please advise me in this, since I am not a tech.guy. Thank you and good day.
The EF 100-400 II will be a great pairing with the R7. I have a couple videos on the R7 in low light and it performs very well. Go check those out in the video library and see what you think :)
I got sticky shutter where take finger off button & takes another 1-4 shots only in slow burst mode so returned it after 2 weeks & replacement camera does same so interesting nobody else having same problem. It so bad l don’t use slow burst anymore.
Same here, I always loose the one on my RP but the one on the R7 sits very tight, I even have a hard time removing it when I want to use my field monitor.
So strange your hot shoe cover doesn't stay in. Mine is snug as a bug. Maybe yours just isn't thick enough or something. Wonder if they could just send you one, it has to cost them pennies to make...
I rent the R7 for a week and i just can't stand the new button layout and feel of the camera, it feels like i am shooting with some dirt cheap point and shoot, even the AF on button feels so bad. Definitely not a camera i want to buy and keep. First Canon camera feels so bad in my 30 years of Canon user experience.
That's why I suggest everyone rent before buying. I don't necessarily agree with you as it feels like all the 90D 77D etc. But it for sure feels cheaper than the R series cameras. Layout is different but Im guessing we can expect more of that in the future as looks like they are testing layouts a lot
the magnesium alloy is mainly the internal frame. the shell is poly. same was the R6. The r5 has the mag alloy shell and frame. At least from what I can tell from the cameras and specs I read on it. But who knows. if its a mag alloy shell on r7 the ratio is log on the mag :) which wouldn't suprise me either. Good note also
I have an R7 and love it, I also prefer a camera with a battery grip. I solved that issue by buying a BG-E2 for $7 from MPB in NYC with free shipping. I then cut the extensions off and put a piece of friction tape on it to "lock" it in place The tripod screw locks it well. It make a HUGE difference in the feel and handling of the camera. i.imgur.com/hOLYzp0m.jpg i.imgur.com/DKHPCuom.jpg
Then there are the people who expected to get a $6500 camera for $1500…
All your observations are bang on.
Thanks and I couldn't agree more
Thank you Scott!
👍
Phenomenal review Scott. I've had a few strange configuration quirks with mine but it seems to have recovered and continues to work as advertised. Completely agree that for what the R7 costs, the technology and capability are unbeatable.
thx
I found your description trustworthy. I will buy R7. Your raising ISO for locking was a piece of excellent advice. Thanks for that.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Nice presentation! Love the 100-400 EF 2 combo with this camera for wildlife. A great replacement for my 7D 2 which was a dream for wildlife!
Very cool and thanks.
I’m really glad that I found your channel. I like the no nonsense way you talk about your gear, being safe in the field and common sense practices.
Awesome! Thank you!
Bar none the best Photography channel on the Tube
Just as a heads up: 39:06
YES! We had our power switch pop right off of our R6.
popped off? Like came off the camera or internal?
@@WILDALASKA yes sir, came off of the body completely. No excessive force applied, it was after a day of shooting, being flicked on to format the cards at my desk. Just came right off.
CPS provided me with a loaner while the warranty covered the cost. I’ve felt a little like a beta tester with this RF gear but still elect Canon for my professional work.
@@TimothyGordon wow. CPS is pretty good from my experience and gets you back in the game fast
Good time review and very fair with comparison to other canon camera..I got the r7 last month from 90d I am sure I will see a great improvement .thank you
Thanks for sharing
Your video has helped me a lot to take the best out of my R7.
Thank you so much.
Regards from Chile 🇨🇱
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the effort and quality put in this video! Nice, clear and honest review. Can't wait to upgraded to R7, your video strongly reinforced the decision.
Glad it was helpful.
Great review, thanks a lot! And finally one that doesn't bash on the camera for not being as good as a 4500-6000$ one! Of course it is not. You show what it is and how it performs and put it into the perspective of the camera "only" costing 1400$, so thanks again! Cheers
Glad it was helpful!
I was thinking of getting an a9 used for between $1800 and $2000 since it has a stacked bsi sensor and it's cheap but when I saw this I was sold instantly and I don't regret it at all.
Nice
I'm still considering used a9 vs R7. Don't know if I should get R7 since it will be my only body for the next many years. Where as a9 I can sell it as soon as Sony releases something else that I might like
@@ajc1482 Yes that is what I would do probably.
Any updates??
I do some bird and high school sport photography and your video was great in my decision to buy the R7. Great info from someone who used the system in harsh conditions and gave honest descriptions of the good and weak sides. Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful
Scott, I ordered the Small HD cage while watching. Thanks. I, too, have big hands. I hope this helps my grip. You might want to check out Small HD's monitor. I have the Action 5, affordable. But still gives 2 nits of light, needed outdoors so you can see it. I find it to be the ultimate solution to composition that is tough to see in the EVF. What else is cool is you can lean it down forward so you can still see what you're shooting even if your camera is near the ground which helps. The main reason for me, though is the fact that you can compose your shot way better.
Very cool. thanks for the info
Great video , I’ve had the r7 for about two months , I use it as a back up for my r5 and let me tell you for awhile I forgot that I had an r5 just because the r7 is an amazing camera
Couldn't agree more
Great review on the R7. They were easily irritated and faster than you think 🤗
yes they can be
Thanks for the thorough video and useful info! Owned the R7 for 2 months and tried to shoot kingfishers at close distances. Unfortunately it didn’t work out because of the following:
1. Rolling shutter/ distortion in the images
2. Vibration induced using slow shutter speeds (when using mechanical shutter in particular)
3. Inadequate buffer (had to use cRAW in order to get around 40 images in a roll)
Such a pity that it looked a perfect compliment to my R3 on paper but didn’t really live up to my expectations at least for my use.
Odd on there shut off. And yes its a great camera.
I have the R7 and I think it is more than a beginner setup.
I couldn't agree more and It's why one of my final verdict questions answered was " Should it be in a pro photogs Kit"
Great review Scott. Have had my R7 for 3 months and have had all the same issues except for the rolling shutter and hitting the buffer I’m pretty good at doing small bursts. Looking forward to the next vid. Thanks 👀👁
Thanks for the info!
Adapted my settings with help from your videos I now have my R7 set up perfectly for me - thank you. Also bought the Smallrig cage which gives the camera extra heft and makes it sit better in my hand... and gives added protection. Thank you for your videos, love 'em
Your welcome. It makes for a nice setup
Really enjoyed the review. I was wondering how you thought the R7 would work with the Canon EF 400mm 5.6 Non IS prime and the Canon EF 500 4.0 NON IS prime?
They should work ok but the fps may drop a little with those lenses if I remember correctly
Great review, just awesome
thx
I finally got to hold an R7 at B&H. My hands aren't as broad as yours but my fingers are "palm a basketball" long; the deep grip still fits me fine. I have no problem working within the few limitations it has. I don't need an R7 but I want one. Maybe next year.
very nice.
Great review on the R7!!
Thanks!
I enjoyed watching last week the alaska video with you and your uncle. And this info. helps me because I'm quite sure I'm upgrading to this R7 from my 80D. Thanx
Thanks. Its a great camera especially for the price.
In a quandary, I have always shot Nikon, and currently use Z6ll, which does not do well on wildlife. Just a hobbyist so Z9 is not in my budget. This Canon R7 looks affordable and seem to do well, so I am considering a change. Love your in depth videos.
My suggestion would be to rent the R7 and see if it fits your needs
I agree with your analysis of the rolling shutter. I shot the same scene with & without a tripod & the imagoes from the tripod were far better than the hand held.
good info
After a while humming and arring I’ve just taken the plunge so will use the R7 for the extra reach with the 500f4is and keep the r6 for closer stuff and landscapes an astrophotography an stuff
👍👍👍
Great idea
You produce great videos with helpful info. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
Used 7d2 and 100-400 for many years with absolutely zero issues but probably reaching the end of the shutter life. Considering the r7 just based on price- reviews are all over the place, but seems being able to keep using the same lens is feasible with an upgrade to at least 15 fps. Don’t care at all about video so may be enough of an upgrade
the EVF and eye tracking will be a huge change to your photography experience also.
However the 5D Mkiii will always be my landscape camera!
yes all the 5d's are great landscape camera and glad your enjoying your R7
Subscribing!
Glad it was helpful!
Very cool. Thanks
Awesome review , hope Canon does make a pro version cropped sensor camera like a min R 3 be really cool
Would be nice
Superb video and agree with the review. The R7 is so good I won't ever go back to a dslr and the best birding camera I have ever used and used a 5DMKiv and a 7DMKii before
For the price yes I agree.
Thanks for sharing another wonderful video like always 👍👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks, very informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your good review and looking forward to buy one.
Glad I could help
Very informative video! I'm still waiting for my R7 that's been backordered since June. Have a great weekend.
That's nuts. My local store here in Anchorage has 3 in stock. Contact Stewarts Photo in Anchorage and I'm sure they will ship it to you.
@@WILDALASKA I traded in some items on the R7 so I have no choice but to wait.
Only huge problem i have heard is with Sigma 150-600 contemporary pulsing focusing issue but you can fix this with camera settings and Sigma doc menu settings.
All 3rd party lenses don't work well with canon atm.
New video! Great timing, my rental R7 arrives on monday to take on vacation :)
follow the set up video for a good starting point and im sure you will enjoy the camera on your trip.
@@WILDALASKA That’s the plan! Your setup video made me realize how many settings I had changed on my R5, so it’s nice to have a step by step video for the R7.
Just discovered your channel and I loved this review. I just subscribed and look forward to checking out more of your videos.
Awesome! Thank you!
@@IntothewestOkotoks been like that for Canon for years, sure would help people to read the damn manual
Give FV mode a chance. It is relatively new but after a period of trying starts to make sense to my, also 76yo, way of thinking.
Really nice video. If you left any questions unanswered I don't know what they could be. Great job.
I do get a bit long winded :) Glad you liked it.
@@WILDALASKA I prefer to think of it as thorough:)
Again a great video!! Keep on going :) Thanks for the efforts. BIF settings keeps an issue for me (as noob...).
practice on things like ducks at your local duck pond or seagulls etc that aren't very eratic and then move up to some smaller eratic birds. it takes time t get good at it like anything else.
Very cool. Good to hear there's some good experiences with the 3rd party lenses.
Also nice PRS
thx. great guitars
Brad.
You do have to re-tighten it but now that often and no more than any other small rig cage I've owned
@@WILDALASKA mamy thanks for your reply you're probably right. I'll let you know after I reset it all and try it again.
Thanks Scott for another great review. I really appreciate it. I have not used my r7 for anything but wildlife. Getting ready to take some landscapes on a tripod. Do u turn the ibis off when using a tripod? Thanks
theory holds that you should. But I usually don't see the difference.
What about shutter shock in MS mode. So many reviewers mentioned the effect of IQ due to the vibration caused by the shutter shock. If in fact that’s true then using in ES or MS is a problem. It’s what has made me pause in deciding if I should purchase it for birding. Thanks
Don't use mechanical shutter. Use full electronic. No issue there unless you shoot near very straight lines a lot. and if that then shoot 1st curtain
Yes, absolutely
@@WILDALASKA But not for the 5D i guess
Really good video - thank you. Which version of your 500 F4 are you using? I have an EF 100-400 isii and thinking of adding a 500 F4. Thanks
The latest MkII, but it was originally released in 2011. Not sure what year mine was created as I bought used. Its my favorite lens.
very helpfull video thank you !
So glad!
500 MkII is the one I have (last pone they have made) And it's the 500 F4 all day long. the big lenses glass is something magical.
Have had issues with on/off sometimes it takes a while to come to life.
id send it back to canon. mine doesn't do that at all.
@@WILDALASKA its only happen a few times i think with a heavy lens and low battery so will monitor
I think that's ridiculous!
grab the kit with the wide angle lens as its like 100 or so more and too the lens in a drawer and enjoy the r7 lol
excellent video thanks you .. i just change from the 90D to R7 .. but i think to change my sigma 150 600 for the canon 100 500 m but its expensive loll .. waht do you think ! its going too be way better ?
yes the RF glass is better than the sigma and better AF. You could even go with a EF 100-400
If I could handhold all this shots and get not image blur with that massive 11+ lb lens id be surprised ;)
Usually have it on using mode 2 on the lens stab.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks for that - What is the ISO and noise comparison like?
@@DuckMisty very good on the R7. Here's my video on it ua-cam.com/video/-8CUHjK2dA8/v-deo.html
Good catch on the image warp/shift.
some EF lenses work on h+ on this but not on H+ on the r6
yes version 1 lenses shoot slower
@@WILDALASKA r6 manual pages 856, 857 shows compatible H+ lenses
With cameras from the R7 to the R6 in quality and features I was wondering is the R7 the better photo quality or is the R6 better to deal with rolling shutter etc.? Thanx
R6 has faster sensor readout so will have less rolling shutter. But the higher mp, faster fps, and better AF, for me the R7 wins regardless of rolling shutter FOR wildlife and birds
@@WILDALASKA Have you had the Error:70 ? nightmare...im getting that and it freezes 😪
@@MBrady1970 No.other tan the on/off switch breaking its worked perfectly
At what point will low temperature affect the R7, compared to classic 7D.
Ive shot in -20 F weather and it operated without issue.
I think about r5 what you can tell about it ?
good camera
I was ready to buy the Smallrig cage.... But one guy on a photo forum said he has it, and it did not add extra grip space for ones little finger... The biggest reason I wanted the cage. And it doesn't appear to widen the body on the front right bottom corner, from photos either ?
I'm wondering if you have a different version of the cage ?
It makes the camera fill a little bigger. It does add a bit in space at bottom but very little. I use it more for add on points for mics, external recorders etc. as it’s dual use camera for stills and video
@@WILDALASKA okay thank you. I'm still looking for something. Love your vids btw. Just subscribed 👍
@@Chris_Wolfgram thanks !
What rig cage do you have for your Canon R7?
Small Rig Black Mamba
What about R10 for beginner wildlife. Have R7 for self thinking R 10 for her.
R10 is great starter, BUT ....if you can afford $500 more the R7 offers so much more.
R7 is my first mirrorless camera after using the 7dmii. I can't get a good focused picture with any of my lenses. Any troubleshooting ideas? I reset it, but get tones of noise and blurry photos.
Up your shutter speeds and run your images through DXO pureraw before import to Lightroom. Theres a 30 day free trial of the software
Which is good R7-R8 for hybrid use
If you need up close and personal, R7. If you want full frame then R8
@@WILDALASKA means
You forgot to mention the a9 and the a9II both don't have rolling shutter and theyre the best bang for the buck for bird in flight photography.
meh ;) lol
Great video, thanks! I love my R7 but there is one thing that bugs and I don't know if it's me or the camera. I use back button focus (AF On = Spot, * button = animal eye tracking), Spot Metering, and Servo AF. When I press AF On the camera focuses but then if I let go of the button the focus changes. Sometimes even when I keep pressing AF On it changes focus. It's almost like the camera is changing metering AND focus when I move the spot around. Shouldn't it change the metering but NOT the focus? I can't figure it out. Any suggestions?
are you half pressing shutter sat same time?
@@WILDALASKA Nope. I thought maybe I had "continuous focus" enabled (I have it disabled on my R5), but the "continuous focus" option is not on the R7. But the R7 behaves as if it is on. Weird.
@@copperwoof Did you find an answer for this Tim?
@@WILDALASKA thank you sir
which one do you like better the R7 or R8
depends on shooting situations. If I need reach then its r7 or more cropping. Otherwise its the r8.
@@WILDALASKA thanks
Where did you get the cage from?
SmallRig Black Mamba Cage. amzn.to/3Vs3f4j
Isn’t the V speed rating just for videos ?
?
I got sticky shutter where take finger off button & takes another 1-4 shots only in slow burst mode so returned it after 2 weeks & replacement camera does same so interesting nobody else having same problem. It so bad l don’t use slow burst anymore.
It doesn't suprise me that it would do that. I really have expected it to.
@@WILDALASKA from your experience is it easy fixed or you didn’t bother taking it back?
Maybe that is how that works, have you considered that? Sounds it's the camera saving the pictures to the card not taking the pictures.
I have found the same at times. Not very often. I just tolerate it.
Nice if it had a battery grip
true
I got my r7 yesterday. My hotshoe cover sits suuuuper tight. Its hard to even get out
Yes its very snug and hard to remove, but once you do, it doesn't stick again as tight. its annoying. and my el guano ;)
@@WILDALASKA doesnt seem to budge after i re-fitted it. But I will keep that in mind! Thanks for going so in depth in this video!
@@Tapirrr Your very lucky then. Actually im probably just very unlucky lol. Goodthing is those replacement ones are very cheap off amazon.
I have the original one and its loose also kind of. its just my copy im sure
Put some black gaff tape over that hotshoe and you will forget that it is there...
I have meant to do that about 50 times.
Ok woman thanhk amen thanhk

The R7 has a magnesium body
the magnesium alloy is mainly the internal frame. the shell is poly. same was the R6.
Very Cool.
