There is a large electric fence running across the border with Belgium and there must be German troops all over the place, not even to mention how dangerous it must be at verdun with al the fighting and shelling going on. You guys have some balls
Have you Guys been to the Vosges? Currently in the planning stages of a trip, and any advice would me helpful. Also any tips re places to visit in Nov 2018 in either France or Belgium that are doing any ceremonies to mark the Armistice?
Drew Dixon I would recommend to visit the Austro-Hungarian forts near Trient (or Trento (don't know if you guys know the German or Italian name)) in south Tirol. There where about 8 Austro-Hungarian and a few Italian forts on the mountains and going threw the tunnels and the Forts is really interesting. Sorry my English is not the best. ;-)
Just wanted to thank you and the Verdun team for a fascinating episode, I personally visited the region in mid summer 2015 and found Douamont (on a beautiful, still summers evening, without another person there) to be very profoundly moving, the sound of just birdsong and the view over the forest that surrounds the site was such a paradox to the energy of hatred that prevailed there just over 100 years ago. Explaining to a friend about my experience, I said " it was so quiet that it was as if there was no sound left to describe the horror", which in retrospect was poetic but so so true. Thanks again
@@maxdurk4624 actually as far as realistic shooters go its probably the most fun I've had of that genre, finding a nice spot and shooting others with your rifle avoiding detection and artillery while destroying kids is rly fun
Unless we started with the Second Sino-Japanese War, which officially broke out 80 years ago this July, and could easily argued to be the true beginning of WW2.
A true testament to the absolute destructive power of artillery. The designs of brilliant engineers, defenses that could have turned back entire divisions of infantry, were turned into so much lumpy earth; A mere whisper of the perfection of function it once was.
I bought Verdun because you guys, Indy. And I enjoy it a lot. The show and the game go hand and hand. Thanks for helping us Americans get more involved in a war that we are only taught the basics of.
What an incredible video, very haunting in that fog and excellent camera work. Fantastic to learn more about the forts and their design. I had no idea the fort in game was modeled so faithfully! An incredible game that succeeds to balance real life history, atmosphere and fun gameplay! Perhaps we could see more videos linking content from WW1 video games to the real history? My pick would the excellent Toy Soldiers, it really captures the grim destruction of the war through the less confronting lense of virtual model dioramas.
visited Verdun in the Late 1980's when I was stationed in Germany. Was one of the highlights of my tour of duty. I hope you visited the domed section of the battlefield and the Douaumont Ossuary. The tour was just prior to being deployed to the first Gulf War and was designed to give us an "idea" of trench warfare was like. One of my most vivid memories was visiting a trench line still containing the soldiers remains and the tips of their bayonets could just still be seen poking out of the ground. they were buried alive by German artillery. We had a French Lieutenant as our guide and when we asked him how the French or any army was able to get them "over the top" knowing what faced them he could not answer my question.

Dear Indy and crew, I have been a fan of The Great War channel on UA-cam since it was only a few months old. At the time my interest and knowledge in the Great War was pretty low. Since that day you guys have inspired me to learn everything I can about it. So much so that when my girlfriend and I went to Paris for ten days I insisted we spend some time exploring the battlefields of Verdun. It was a mind blowing experience to see the earth still so incredibly churned up 100 years later. It only hints to the hell those poor soldiers had to experience. The cemetery outside of the ossuary was a sobering reminder of the lives lost there during that battle. We explored the grounds and the cold damp tunnels of Fort Douaumont and Fort de Vaux. Our trip to Verdun was incredible and eye opening. I would never have had the experience if it weren't for your channel. So thank you, from the both of us, for the hard work you guys do every week to keep history alive. Sincerely, Mike F'ing Bond
Indy, you were a great host by asking some specific questions and allowed the game developers to explain not only the game but discussed their research of what they could find. The guests provided extra information and some great graphics to bolster their explanations.
Great Episode from the Great War! I love the show and I love the game Verdun! This was an awesome behind the scenes view of a map I spend many hours on in game! Thank you for all the hard work guys!

Excellent video and very special to get those details about Douaumont from the developpers who spent countless hours modeling it in their game. I play Verdun from almost the beginning (back in the time there were only 3 maps and the French and Germans) and it's a great game. The evolution of this game was amazing. You're doing a very good work, like the Great War channel !
Because technology allowed for war to become mobile again and people apparently don't mind dying in droves quite as much if they are managing to take huge swaths of land in days or hours and capitulating countries in weeks that held out for years in the last one instead of being butchered for mere yards.
There were up to 70.000 nuclear warheads during the height of the cold war. Nowadays estimates vary between 10 and 15 thousand of which about 4000 are deployed. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_arms_race#/media/File:US_and_USSR_nuclear_stockpiles.svg). Also it is very noteworthy, that in the last 70 years more than 2000 nukes have been detonated on this planet, most of those due to the USSR and the US. The combined explosive energy would equal about 35000 times the hiroshima nuclear bomb respectivly. (ua-cam.com/video/WAnqRQg-W0k/v-deo.html) There is also the interesting hypothesis that this excessive use of nuclear arms may also have had an impact on the global climate, thought in my opinion there is not enough evidence yet to proof that claim. I just think it's an interesting sidenote.

The Wonder Woman movie takes place during The War To End All Wars or The Great War or even World War 1. So I was wondering could you guys do a special analyzing the trailers. To see if its historically accurate.
I was in Verdun 2 days ago, even in fort Douaumont and yes, it´s exactly like in the game, at least the upper floor of the real Douaumont in playable in VERDUN. The landscape of the other maps is also really real! I love the game!
I want to go to Verdun one day...the place looks so spooky yet beutiful in its way...Crazy how so many people died..and we still can see the landscapes still caved in...
I visited Verdun in 1998 with my unit and it is an incredibly tragic battlefield. It was never restored following the battle. The French mausoleum is so sad with the thousands of thousands of soldiers remains piled on top of each other. :(
Question for out of the trenches: How did the various gases used by both sides react with fire? I figure there would be problems using a flamethrower in the aftermath of a gas attack if the gas could caught fire. Love the show, cheers from Sweden!
Pipsy Verdun was way longer it lasted 9 months, 3 weeks and 6 days, while Stalingrad lasted 5 months, 1 week and 3 days. However Stalingrad still remains the bloodiest battle in history.
Hey! Verdun devs, I know you guys are reading these comments. I love your game, but please fix the pistol reloads! the slide locks back out of nowhere, even when the magazine isn't empty.
One thing I love about history, and perhaps wars in particular and especially the world wars, is how humbling they are. All those lives. Just like me. Better and worse men and women and children and old folk, enduring all that suffering for various reasons that always seem so pointless to us, generations in the future, but for the people back then and there, were just as important and real as our conflicts and issues today. Makes me feel...small, but in a way that feels OK. And whenever you manage to get a hold of a good game to really guide you through some historical events like these, you feel like you're a tiny bit closer to understanding what it was like.
I went there on a sunny clear day, it was really surreal quite peaceful and surrounded by life with all the forests. Also all the bats inside are awesome.

Loveing the work your puting in, apsalutly amazeing by how much effort your guys put in.
i am early... time to make a joke
Nivelle did nothing wrong.
Gorbag Quick-Blades to be fair he did ok at verdun
Please excuse me, I have to go slam my head through reinforced concrete.
neither hotzendorf and cadorna
Its really incredible the fact that about 10 people created such an amazing game if you ask me.
Verdun > BF1
BF1 is bullshit WW1. Same engine as all their WW2 games. Running around with machine-guns and sub-machine guns!!
I love bf1 so much. I agree, it’s DEFINITELY not ww1, but it’s a fun game
Historically Realistic? 🚫
Historical Atmosphere? ✅
Sacrifices realism for one of the best gameplay and gunplay experiences of all time? ✅✅
The guns are reskins
@@leod-sigefast Not everyone was stuck with a bolt-action, which you’re more than welcome to use anyways, it’s still a viable option as it normally two shots and out ranges smgs.
Thanks TGW team and thanks Verdun team... I don't have much time to play nowadays, but I will get the game.
Bought it already.
Duoaumount is always a bloodbath in the game.
These specials are absolutely awesome. I almost want to buy a game console to play VERDUN now.
You can play it on computer too actually.
I play verdun on Xbox me and my friends play it religiously
Indy and team, these Verdun videos are awesome! Your 3 guests are great
Verdun is a great game
Great historical work. They must be commended to show the horrors of wars and the sacrifices that were made.
21:23 "There was a WORLD WAR II?!" LOL
Things like the Verdun game and your marvelous channel alongside C&Rsenal, Forgottenweapons and InrangeTV beat the crap out of that cashguzzler BF1 for both entertainment value and actual educational value. Thanks for endeavouring to pursue this sort of thing Indy.
The Wonder Woman movie takes place during The War To End All Wars or The Great War or even World War 1. So I was wondering could you guys do a special analyzing the trailers. To see if its historically accurate.
knight of darkness lol
knight of darkness Is that question even relevant?
The trailers didn't give us much so far. Let's see what the movie holds.
Fact checking... at 0:10: "You're a man" - one accurate fact.
Cumulative total at 2:51: still one accurate fact.
Lmao
I was in Verdun 2 days ago, even in fort Douaumont and yes, it´s exactly like in the game, at least the upper floor of the real Douaumont in playable in VERDUN. The landscape of the other maps is also really real! I love the game!
you know you've played too much verdun when the name douaumont gives you flashbacks.
"Old VHS tapes", that was just hurtful.
3:06 "you're gay"
it took me 10 seconds to understand that he was talking about the game
I want to go to Verdun one day...the place looks so spooky yet beutiful in its way...Crazy how so many people died..and we still can see the landscapes still caved in...
Are... are you wearing puttees?
yes
+The Great War love it 😂😂
The Great War ha😂
I visited Verdun in 1998 with my unit and it is an incredibly tragic battlefield. It was never restored following the battle. The French mausoleum is so sad with the thousands of thousands of soldiers remains piled on top of each other. :(
i have this game and i like the game a lot :D
It sucks. I was In France and missed you guys when you did these:(
Indiana you look dapper asf
One of the best episodes yet!
I'm liking the puttees indy 👍👍👍
Question for out of the trenches: How did the various gases used by both sides react with fire? I figure there would be problems using a flamethrower in the aftermath of a gas attack if the gas could caught fire. Love the show, cheers from Sweden!
wasn't verdun the longest battle in the world?
It was
Well that's hard to tell, we don't really know about all the battles, and more importantly: How do you define „battle“?
in WWI or in the entire History? because Stalingrad was longer
Jonathan Car show I didn't say Stalingrad was the longest in History, I said it was longer than Verdun
Pipsy Verdun was way longer it lasted 9 months, 3 weeks and 6 days, while Stalingrad lasted 5 months, 1 week and 3 days. However Stalingrad still remains the bloodiest battle in history.
It’s a dark, somber place there.
I felt it almost physically.
Hey! Verdun devs, I know you guys are reading these comments. I love your game, but please fix the pistol reloads! the slide locks back out of nowhere, even when the magazine isn't empty.
Xavier Israel I think you might have a better chance if you post this on the Verdun subreddit on Reddit
We are looking to fix this :)
Aaron18Cvx The just responded. Maybe not.
End Me lol well looks like a Verdun dev/s replied , good for him
I am from Germany and I just wanted to say that your videos are awsome 👍🏻
Dankeschön
Bitteschön 😉
Indie, always when youre on a roadtrip at a old front you look like a somone who plunder some dead corpes from soliders ...
INDIANA IS A *BADASS*
Is he?
I went there on a sunny clear day, it was really surreal quite peaceful and surrounded by life with all the forests. Also all the bats inside are awesome.
Are those puttees Indy?
they sure are.
Cool colaboration, this game needs more players. Verdun is great.
