  • So I built one of these for my son who is currently traveling the word so he could connect to free wifi. It is half the length of my toilet brush cantenna but still has 11db of gain with a wider beamwidth.

    That's very nice! What an excellent idea. I've been searching different videos on this idea and came across you. Excellent explanation. I think I'll search the rest of your videos

    If you want to be precise than the driven element should be 30.61 mm long (not 31.25mm) - calculating in the middle of the WiFi band. Additionally the values that you give are very theoretical and they are correct assuming that the waveguide is infinitely long or the end of the can is perfectly matched with the free space (which is not). I like your videos because your antennas are well made esthetically, however your videos would have more values if you measure them properly with VNA. I am certain that this antenna does not have correct VSWR in WiFi band.

      Its true, it would be better if you made a transient part to adapt to air impedance. I made a few of these and they perform better with a horn, its angle and length must be calculated to get the maximum gain. Look for horn calculator and you can make the horn solid or made of metallic mesh, as long as the mesh wires arent apart no more than 1/20 or max 1/12 the wavelength. Hen coop mesh is ok. You will get 18dbi easily, i made several horns, from 20 cms long to 1 meter, nearly 20 dbi. More gain is difficult to achieve, because size gets increased a lot. Just ask.me if you want some examples. Nice antennas.

    I have a question I can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere. I have a mofi 4500 WiFi router it has two antenna ports, my question is if I want to make a cantenna just like yours do I need two of them, one for each port? I also am thinking of attaching it to an old satellite dish that is not in use anymore. Any suggestions or thoughts on this would really be appreciated. Thanks I’m advance

    I was wondering if you are selling these antennas as well? Because I'd love to buy one from you. I can't build one myself.

    Hi, thank you!
    What do you think would happen, to the signal strength, with a cantenna twice the length of the "longer range one" (9:51)?

    I can't find a good online cantenna calculator. If I want to create an 18 dbi, 5.8 ghz. Cantenna, how long would the can be ? And where would the driven element fall.

    you have done a great work on your channel. I'm going to do as university project a wifi jammer as you have already shown on your channel combined with four cantennas for greater results. According to which guide you have constructed this mini canntenna that has as you said 100mm diameter because lots of guides set as "working" diameter between 7.8cm and 8.8 cm but the legth of the cantenna hast to be about 13 cm ? My professor told me to use a pringles can, but I noticed that only the bottom-reflector is metal and the cylinder is hard paper. Thanks in advance for your attention

    My can has a diameter of 75 mm, where should the driven element come? Where can I find the info to calculate this?

    I heard _why_ he put the cork on it (weather etc protection) but does that hinder the antenna strength?

    hi andrew I've just watched a couple of your videos, i have to say I'm impressed! and I'm not impressed easily you are dedicated to this hobby/job of yours and i like the precision that you use in the making of these antenna's i have sent a request to your fb group and id like to enquire about you building me a custom sma antenna/cantenna with 4 sma connectors with attachments to use with an Alfa AC1900

      Yes I would also like to see some 868mhz designs for LoRa. Specifically for gateway (non directional), and also optionally for fixed nodes (directional).

    I'm looking for a proximity antenna for a cellular phone that can increase my wifi signals and cellular signal maybe a can with a coil to pass the signal from the can to the internal antenna of the phone. Do you have a video that you have done on your channel? I love that you explain the theory so well

    Very handy. Will these Cantennae be improved in range if they're set in the base of a parabolic antenna dish? For example a normal satellite dish or shaped hard foil disposable baking-tray material? Can you test such a concept in a video later? Find optimum parameters for a prototype?

    • @andrewmcneil

    I've used a driven element from my fake Alfa card but didn't realise that it's male not female which I need.
    Without buying a new element etc is there any way I can get it up and going . As I want to do it tonight? Thanks
    Great videos.
    Your wifi vids are the ones I first go to as you know what your doing and it's clear info. Well done

    Afaik, eBay Germany let's one reply to "negative" eBay feedback (that's old news, from ~2014-ish) …in order to enriching the public-facing picture. Maybe eBay UK implements something similar.

    Andrew, why have you gone back to element length 31mm when you showed us with your adjustable cantenna that 33 was better and why are you spacing the element at 44mm when you showed that longer spacings were better?

    • @andrewmcneil
      @andrewmcneil  5 років тому

      This has a slightly bigger diameter and with it shorter 31mm has a better VSWR

    • @freefilms10000
      @freefilms10000 5 років тому

      @@andrewmcneil Thank you, Andrew. I understand about the element length/swr, but surely if your 90mm tube is better with the element further away than the norm, the principle must hold also for the wider can, though obviously not as much as the 75mm on your variable cantenna.

    All sort of antennas won't be any good without the RF amplifier especially in a remote area where there is minimal amount of signal to reach....a slight disposition or disturbance such as vibration or wind...could affect the signal significantly because it is too sensitive due to the least amount of signal...you will need an RF amplifer to make it work with stability
