    I thought I was the only HAM watching this series. The old school guys are all about the rules. This hack is a victimless violation and would never come to the FCC's attention. More like this please!

      +Jeff Southerland Not a Ham. Honestly, I think the FCC is over regulating something fairly benign. Rules exist for reasons, but they don't have to be reasonable. Like the Kinder Eggs :)

    Whilst there's a limit for total irradiated power, and Darren's right when he sets it to just 500mW, it didn't address the second issue. Just like how my laser at home is a tiny tiny 50mW, compared to, say, a 60000mW (60W) incandescent bulb, the bulb sends that energy out in all directions, but the laser concentrates it onto a small area. The laser can burn through thin plastic at several metres, and the bulb wouldn't. This set up might not be a health risk- but it is important to check.

    great episode. more informative, people should know that they have more control of their lives more than the government and IEEE but responsible enough to know and face the consequences. developing awareness and informing people are the first steps to make educated decisions. similar to not paying tax or jaywalking, agoing a little over the speed limit/ allowed limit of modulation, etc. everything we had power to do in the beginning, we werent born with regulation, but they help.

  • @rkan2
    @rkan2 12 років тому

    In Finland the limit, which is 100mW, is for a dipole antenna. When the antenna is a direction -antenna the power needs to be deamplified by the same amount as the directional antenna focuses the "beam" So if 100%(radiates 100% of 360 degrees) dipole antenna transmits 100mw, a directional antenna which focuses the beam to 5% of the dipole antenna's range can only transmit 5mW. Please do tell me if the regulation is more open in the US!

    Some firearms do use clips. For example the M1 Garand and the SKS both use clips. A magazine is what holds the rounds in the firearm. A clip is used to load the magazine. Typically clips are used to load fixed magazines.
    But you are correct. The person used the term clip incorrectly.

I also have a RTL-SDR dongle that is MXC, so the other Day i maneged to pick up a SMA Male to MXC male... my Idea is hook up the RTL-SDR to the yagi... would it work ??? ...
    I already have a professional BNC Radio Antenna with adapter... but was just wondering would the Yagi work... you know save space in my kit insead of carrying mutiple antennas have one that does all

    I had one of those China made yagi antennas. It did not work well. Stick with a manufacture that makes antennas for commercial use with real published specs on radiation pattern and SWR. It s also hard to know the real ERP because many manufactures exaggerate the gain of their antennas.

    We are going way over the limits here, BUT because we have a directional antenna, they can't legally prohibit us to make the link. (here in the netherlands atleast)

    It's hard to explain SNR within 500 characters, but think of it in terms of say audio amplification. You may hear that someone is screaming into a megaphone a couple of blocks away, but their actual words may become distorted or unintelligible from echoes or other loud noises along the way.

    I think some people overreact to FCC laws (OFCOM here in the Uk). The FCC usually don't drive around in vans looking for people with overpowered Wi-Fi or or any other frequencies. They simply don't have the money or time to do that. Usually what happens is a neighbour etc will complain to the FCC and then they will take a look into it.

    Your wifi transceiver might be well within the ERP limit. But when you add 16 dB of antenna gain...what the viewer is saying is you are now over the ERP limit when you combine the transceiver output plus the antenna's gain. While this is still a small amount of power and the antenna is rather directional you could still be interfering with other transmissions. You are most likely interferring with someone else's wireless telephone or wifi internet. Do a little research on harmonics...

  • @MrLiquimatter

    sorry, its out of spec still... 500mW +16 dBi gain = 49.99 dB, anything over 36 is illegal (in the US). Not that I care. Mine is 1000mW + 25dBi =55 dB (Yagi 25dBi). mine gets a good 4 to 5 miles on a clear day.

    The dip shit with the CB was more then likely dead keying 75 watts and swinging a couple hundred on a 60 ft mast from across the street. As a licensed ham operator his licenses should have been pulled and equipment confiscated but they choose to do nothing.
    Either way what he's doing with this rig isn't harmful in anyway especially since it's mostly only being used for the increased gain on the rx end and not tx.

Using ham radios to tx on CB, amped CB's, all of that should have caused him to lose his license. He was the guy to go to if you needed a radio modded, peak & tuned but no one on the block watch the evening news without him bleeding over.
    If they didn't do anything about him why would they care about adding a high gain antenna to help sniff packets.

    We are allowed a maximum of 4 Watts, 36dBm, total power (ERIP)
    So, if ERIP (dBm) = radio power (dBm) + antenna gain (dBi)
    Then, 36dBm (ERIP) - 16dBi (antenna gain) = 20 dBm (100mw)
    Therefore you are only allowed to hook up a 100mw or 20 dBm radio to the 16dBi Yagi antenna (legally)

  • @zoolkhan
    @zoolkhan 11 років тому

    fcc regulatons for a device are always in context with the original antenna.
    You attach a yagi with >20db gain vs dipole? youre out of regulations.
    Besides folks, your cell phone probably uses more power - is much closer to your brain - is transmitting all day (also in stand by) ... no point in getting hysterical about wlan-yagis - especially, since theyre usually used to connect two remote buildings or so. No one puts that into the living room. regards, a ham from europe

However, the fact is that if you are 'within reasonable limits' and or not broadcasting 24-7 and or not causing interference that will bother others, they have MUCH bigger fish to fry that could MUCH better legitimize their job then a residential tinkerer. Most of those guys only look for easy targets to legitimize their jobs.

    Why is the actual item not tested out? It is just talking about the antenna.
    Just to point out a little "experienced the hard way" info - those cheap Chinese-made yagi antennas sold for like $15 on eBay and Amazon - are not tuned correctly. They are further down the teens range of optimal performance, and can actually be connected to cell radio hardware to pickup cell band signals. Not well though.
    When it comes to these cheap versions, dont waste the time or money. Tell your audience to pickup the Alfa 7dBi directional instead. It is MUCH, much better than those cheap yagis. I know the stereotype of Chinese being good at math and all, but to mess up the math THIS badly, and keep selling it... it just messed up. I suppose they do b/c it still picks up some 2.4 signals.
    You should do a video on connecting WiFi amps to the Alfa-type units (or those w/ injection functionality), to show the difference of signal between using the Alfa alone, and then with the amplifier. Ive personally seen significant differences, and being that we discuss this type of thing.... it is a cheap way for users to gain tx/rx power without buying all these crazy types of antennas. B/c the antenna is not going to be as helpful, if it is being underpowered also.

      Can even go w a tripod if youd like. I typically mount w Velcro tape so it can be removed n put back. Industrial strength. But yeah.. Making your own antennas allows you to get even crazier w setups. N u can tune to what u need rather than trying to find one online. Idr the name but search yagi cantenna... Its a British guy that does the videos. How to vids for making all sorts of antennas. Biquad, yagi, etc. The guy has test equipment too.. So u get to see exact ranges n whatnot as well. Bc many yagis from China r tuned too low.. Nearly cell freqency n they'r terrible w 2.4 n band.
