    Hi Andrew, 40 years a plumber, would it help if you cleaned up the inside with steel wool prior to fitting the probe, if so wrap it round a smaller diameter pipe dowel and twist till all scale removed from the soldering operation, also if you wrap a piece of A4 paper round the pipening lining it up that gives you a straight cut line also, and if clean with wire wool you flux only the pipe end the solder wont flow to fare saving you grinding time.
    would foil wrapped round a plastic pipe be good enough for cantena, you could alter the diameter of the pipe by routing out a slot and gluing up then wrap with foil to get precise diameter.
    Hope this helps Mike, great videos.

    Perhaps use a 2 - hole SMA panel mount connector instead of the 4 - hole, then line up the holes with the axis of the tube?

    I`m looking all over the net but I can`t find anything, so I`m gonna just ask.... I want to strengthen and extant the range of the WI FI of my 5G router... I have strong enough antennas on the receiving sides (my devices) but I want to make the sending side (router) signal stronger... so Can this be used for such a thing, maybe make an antenna of this sort and solder the cable to the router ???

    is your probe not too long at 15mm? for wifi 5.5GHz should it not be 13mm for a 1/4 @ 5.5GHz centre of wifi band???

    There are so many 2.4GHZ directional antenna out there, and so few 5GHZ directional antenna. Seems like there would be more, since the 5GHZ signal is so much faster data transfer.

    Andrew, if you want more precise diameter tube, try getting waste pipes from skips and line internally or externally with copper tape

    Enjoyed your build. Would like to see a build for 4G, when out camping I use a small square Arial and plug it into my carwifi unit with mixed results.

    Andrew, i have a can that was a dog food can, the open end is 10cm diameter and 17cm in length of teh can. is that going to be ok to use as a cantenna with a usb mini wifi adaptor plugged in attached to a usb lead. Is it going to work ok with those dimensions ?

    I am considering creating a 3D print and cover it with a copper foil. Easiest way would be to print it in one go and cover the outside. However, the plastic between the active element and the foil may influence the performance, however thin it would be. To get the foil on the inside will require the print to be done in parts, the inside surfaces covered with foil and assembled. Any thoughts on this?

      I'd make a 3d printed wire form instead, a mold sort of speak, to use to bend wire into it. But that's me ;)

    So, you have tested a lot of wifi antennas, can you tell me which type is the most powerful for 2.4 Ghz wifi.

    • @andrewmcneil
      @andrewmcneil  6 років тому +4

      If by powerful you mean long range, a cantenna and a satellite dish. But they are not exactly portable and every antenna has its pros and cons

    i've waiting for 5.8 cantenna sir, cause i want to combine it with parabolic dish, just like ubiquity rocket dish, ive been combine rocket dish with mtik metal net, and its doing a great job at a distance of 30 km. so can you make some video how to make parabolic dish and combine with cantenna sir? thanks in advance

    Hello Andrew. Did you choose the copper tube just for the diameter? could it be of another material? does it need to be metal? I mean the tube. Nice video

    I realize this is an old video but it is EXACTLY what I am interested in building. You stated that the copper pipe had an internal diameter "slightly under 39mm in diameter so this is going to be almost perfect for 5GHz wifi". You never actually state what the "perfect" (optimum ) internal Diameter for a 5GHz wifi cantenna is and I can't seem to find that information anywhere online, after weeks of searching. I can find PLENTY of information on 2.4GHz cantennas but info on the 5GHz spectrum is scarce. If it's not to much to ask, would you mind educating me as to what the optimum inside diameter is for a 5GHz cantenna? Thank you for your time.

    • @andrewmcneil
      @andrewmcneil  4 роки тому

      Look at the measurements in the description 38mm is the minimum anything smaller and a 5GHz wave will not fit in the waveguide. 42mm is the maximum anything bigger and you start to let other frequencies in, look for the video before this one as it shows what can happen if you use a bigger waveguide. So 39mm is almost perfect 40mm would be perfect.

    Nice build! I have an unrelated question: I have an Alfa AWUS036NHA and a TP-Link TL-WN722N which outperforms the former. Is there any reason to choose the Alfa adapter over the TP-Link adapter which costs less than 10GBP?
    I really enjoy your videos, they are interesting and inspiring.

      andrew mcneil so basically I I noticed a lot of people couldn't get it to work and I wanted to know why u think that is? Also my width shows 5 mm and I think you are using 6mm is it OK for me to use 5mm tape for the elements? Also what antenna in your opinion is the best performing antenna to build out of the ones you have made. I'm working on that 19 element yagi and also the double copper Clad coat hangers yagi and want to make sure I'm picking the best ones to make. Thanks again man ur awesome

      Ok the driven element is 31.5 mm long bent into a rectangle with 5 mm sides. the wire is 16 swg 1.6 mm thick. Hope this helps. I may revisit this in the summer and build a big 19 element Yagi again as I do have some new ideas that would improve it
