  • In this video I am reacting to the Chic Maven’s video entitled “Is social media ruining fashion? How luxury brands are becoming “basic”.
    The Chic Maven details why she thinks certain luxury brands are becoming basic which I don’t agree with together with other issues about investment bags, influencer’s role in luxury buying and rising prices.

    Dear Anesu, great video once again! Sadly, social media and influencers are creating a new generation of frustrated teenagers and young women who really have no maturity or understanding of the manipulation they are subjected. As an example, my sister, who can definitely afford luxury items, is constantly battling with her 14 years old daughter who has been asking for a Chanel flap bag since she was 13! I know this seems absurd to many of us but this is eroding their relationship which is extremely sad. She shared with me that some of her friends have very similar issues and how IG is ruining their lives! I have to sons, both in their mid 20s. I teach them about elegance, quality, how to present themselves, how to put together an outfit and what color suits them best. So I have been spared this experience but it makes me wonder our role in society. Are we creating a generation of perpetually frustrated young women? Perhaps we really need to react even more against logo mania by giving an example of quiet and discreet elegance that has to embrace all aspects of life.

      Thank you.
      I feel for your sister it’s not easy and the pressure is unrelenting. What’s the way forward though? Media pressure will get worse with time. How does one handle such a situation when it’s every where?
      Your sons are lucky to have you as their mother. You are doing a great job.

    I always think about the cost-per-wear of every piece of clothing, bag & shoes before I buy them, not the price of the item if I want to resell it. Totally agree with you, Anesu ❤

    For what it's worth, I've never seen a Kelly or Birkin in person. Mind you I don't get out much, nor do I run in those kinds of circles due to my line of work. I'd agree that social media has a play on luxury items. My self worth is not defined by my things. I'm not a zillionaire and I don't have anything to prove to anyone. What luxury items I do have fly under the radar. I wear and enjoy them.

    People on social media need to stop living in their little bubble and step out into the real world. These types of toxic thinking is actually hilarious. I live in south Florida and no one cares what bag you are carrying…they really don’t. Influencers should be grateful they have the platform they do and spread love rather than started dumb drama over things that are not a concern to the rest of us.

    I loved this video. You have a wonderful way of putting things into perspective that a normal person (like myself) can truly appreciate. I would love to see you do a video on luxury minimalism and your thoughts on the topic…especially since you mentioned that you think a regular person needs about 5-6 handbags - no more.
    Great job on the wonderful work you’re doing!

    Great video Anesu! I only have 2 bags, one is Celine and one is hermes. For now I don’t need to expand my collection, but being on social media seems like everyone has these bags and 50 more. Exactly as you said, outside they are rare even in affluent areas. Ive never worn my bags out and seen someone with the same bag as me on the same day. So how common can they really be?
    I recently deleted all social media because it tricks my mind and also puts me in the mindset to want to consume. On top of that I don’t want to seem like I’m including any items in my post to brag or come across that way. Honestly, I just want to buy items that suit me and my life and are exactly what I need, and that’s probably not what some other influencer is wearing.
    I think social media in some ways also cheapens items or turns them to stereotypes. For example the Loro piana summer walks with the charms (which I love so much) have become related with new money in some communities online. When we step back and stop taking it so seriously, it’s just clothing, bags and shoes. Their purpose is to make us look our best while also being great quality that lasts. I personally no longer take “social media opinions” seriously anymore when I look to buy an item.
    As quality becomes harder to find even among larger brands like Chanel or LV, I think we may see price decreases in the luxury resale market. But also less consumerism, and hopefully people researching materials and craftsmanship before buying. And as you say buy better buy less!

      Thank you. The bags are not common at all! It's online hype...
      I think its absolutely important to take a break from Social Media from time to time, it is vital for your sanity. You definitely have the right idea buying things that suit you and your lifestyle regardless of what influencers are saying. I wish more people would be like you!
      I don't think we are at that stage where people are truly conscious about what they buy it's just a few like you ans some of my hardcore subscribers but you are like a drop in the ocean. I guess Rome wasn't built in a day it will take for #bbbl In the meantime let's keep spreading the word

    I agree, handbags are not investments, most of them anyway. They are to be bought, worn and enjoyed. Just like buying an Audi 6, or a BMW 7 that is not an investment, it depreciates. If an item is not increasing in value and gives you a return on your money, to me it's not an investment. People giving you compliments on your bag, shoes and clothes is not an investment.

    i find it strange too, how the word investment is used nowadays to sell (its a brilliant strategy though and is clearly working as most influencers use that word to sell), "invest in good skincare" "invest in good shoes" etc what does that even mean lol? sometimes i think they mean to say, pay more for better quality or xyz reason..

    Hi Anesu, I stumbled across your channel recently and have been watching your full back catalogue of videos! I enjoy understated luxury and love your content. Can you please share your opinion on TAG Heuer and Bremont watches please? I love my TAG link watch with diamonds and have owned it for 14 years, never had any issues with it. However the one thing that annoys me is that I need to replace the quartz battery every 2 years at a cost of $120 each time. I have been thinking about getting an automatic watch and wondering if I should save up for a Rolex Datejust. I know the Rolex quality is assured but also aware that it has an expensive service cost too every 5 years or so. I also have my eye on a gorgeous Bremont automatic watch - the Solo Lady K. This watch also has a hefty price tag and looks very similar my TAG watch except it has a black mother of pearl dial. My husband has a Bremont watch but I am not impressed with the quality - the watch died two months after purchase and had to get repaired. Granted they did it for free but it left me with a bad impression of the brand. With the Rolex, I would feel very conscious about wearing such an expensive ostentatious item on my wrist. So with all that said, I think to myself, why not just go with another TAG watch? The new Carrera automatic watch with blue dial is stunning and just my style. I know some watch enthusiasts say that TAG watches are not really a luxury watch compared to the likes of Rolex and PK, but based on the watch I’ve owned for 14 years, I can’t fault the quality. What is your take on TAG and Bremont watches? Thank you in advance 🙏

    • @felicityw30

      Same dilemma. Want an automatic watch and try to look at different brands. Rolex seems to provide good quality and service but after 5 years, the service fee might be expensive.

    I've never been into logo's and heavy branding. Even in my teens, the lads would go for logo's, but the girls were more about the style or design - not bothered if it was a brand or if their sewing genius of a mother had run it up on the sewing machine!
    I really like the gucci blue canvas with the ophidia blue/ red stripe, but I'm not going to buy a bag in this colour way as its too in your face. I realised it's the colour combination that appeals, so something like a Bally bag in navy with the red/ white stripe gives me similar vibes and despite the visible stripe is still way more discrete.
    As far as buying bags as investments, it's a point of view - for me it's investing in my style, not investing with a view to reselling potentially at a profit. And if I see everyone on social media wearing the same bag, it actually puts me off - although as you say, irl it's not a given that I'll see many people wearing said bag. Usually these bags seem to be a new design, and gifted to many people at the same time, it's a marketing ploy. A year down the line, we're not seeing that bag anymore, so that's maybe the time to decide if I actually like it or not!

    • @SoAnesu
      @SoAnesu  Рік тому +1

      We had a similar upbringing I was also all about the style and most times it would have been my grandmother who would have sewn it.
      You will never ever go wrong with anything from Bally! It’s just so understated and their quality underrated please buy a bag from there you will like it.
      It drives me nuts the way people buy bags to sell on. You buy a bag as an investment for yourself and enjoy it! I’m glad you think they same way. I wish more did.
      Don’t underestimate how smart and cunning the brands are. It’s a dog eat dog world out there.

    I would say social media has probably become one of the single greatest sources for sharing small independent luxury ateliers. The likes of Peter Nitz, Mila Craftwork, Duret Paris, Graziat Taipei who otherwise might not have had the chance to reach a worldwide customer base without having to go through the hoops of expensive marketing campaigns. On TPF (purse forum) we are seeing more and more members shifting from purchasing from Hermes and other large manufacturers to purchasing custom or even fully bespoke bags.
    The luxury shopping experience of today is nothing like it was in the past. Working directly with an artisan through instagram DMs and seeing your design slowly come to life is incredibly fun and rewarding. As much as I used to enjoy shopping at H, having to line up now and fight over limited inventory is a joke. Back when I was in high school they used to have exotic Birkins and Kellys on the shelves. Unfortunately global recognition partly through social media has killed this side of the experience. Therefore I believe social media has had both positive and negative influences on the "luxury industry".
    I for one am mostly done shopping from the conglomerates.I suppose the downside is not everyone is willing to wait several months to a year to receive a product after paying for it.

    • @SoAnesu
      @SoAnesu  2 роки тому +1

      Yes that’s one of the distinct advantages of social media.
      I know two of the brands you have mentioned and you have introduced me to two new ones!
      I definitely think artisan is the way to go! Question is who are the best!

    • @450Dufferin
      @450Dufferin 2 роки тому

      @@SoAnesu At that level, it's not really a question of better rather it is a question of style. They all have access to the highest quality hides on the market and from the best tanneries.
      Duret seems to mostly make structured designs so if you want something along those lines it might be a good artisan.
      Mila Craftworks only ships exotics within USA so that is one consideration. However she offers lovely items in barenia (same as Hermes and from the same tannery HCP). Her specialty is quite avant-garde with harnesses and invisible stitched rolled handles.
      Peter Nitz is interesting since he sources his own hardware and has crafted bags with sterling silver hardware and semi-precious stones. He also has the dream bag which is nicely floppy and unstructured.
      Graziat Taipei mostly specializes in made to order and bespoke shoemaking however he also crafts SLGs and Bags. I currently have a pair of shoes and a tote in Himalayan crocodile in production from him. His specialty is mostly angular / sporty.

      @SoAnesu  2 роки тому +1

      Yes it’s the way I articulated myself. I should have said a fuller sentence “best for you.” Handbags are like bed linen after a certain level it’s not about the quality as it’s assured but what feels best to you.

    Amazing video. I have a question, what do you think about the brands Rick Owens, Carol Christian Poell, Ann Demeulemeester and Yohji Yamamoto. In what category of luxury they are? I feel like the aesthetic of these brands is different of the more mainstream and classic brands such as Hermes, Gucci, Chanel and LV, but i consider them luxury brands because of the material they use, quality and craftsmanship.

    The cost of production and materials???? Those bags are made in poor countries where wages are extremely low. No luxury brand can justify the cost of the product to production nor materials. They are just greedy. The poor are not shelling out $7k on a bag.
