Roskilde Cathedral is not the earliest major church building in northern Europe. Both Sct. Bendts Church in Ringsted and Sorø Abbey Church is older. Sct. Bendts Church is oldest and is built as a burial church for the Valdemar The Great, his saintly father Duke Canute and his descendants. Sorø Abbey and Roskilde Cathedral was built by Valdemars close confidant and friend Archbishop Absalon who is buried in Sorø Abbey. All three churches were also of almost similar size when built.
