The way the game looks and feels aesthetically is a large reason I play the finals. In most shooters, they take place in real life locations, but the finals universe takes place in a virtual game show where the rules are allowed to be broken. The vibe the finals gives is a hyper-capitalist future where brands and sponsors are in control over the entire show with logos and ads plastered across the landscape and on top of modern and post-modern architecture. They blend cities and towns with flat yellows of the walls and bright vibrant skies. Everything feels clean until you destroy it, which makes all the more fun making a mess of the map. I also deeply admire all of the gun and weapon designs. You can actually see the milling work of the metal in some of the mines. They all follow a certain style that I have tried to find a name for, to no avail, I would call it cyberpunk minimalism. I would describe all of the weapons and interactive objects exist in a cyberpunk-esque future, but still retain just enough detail to keep each item ergonomic and self-explanatory. The health gun has a long tube going down the side, not a bunch of needlessly complex bells, whistles, and cuts like weapons from Overwatch have for the sake of making them look futuristic. The same sentiment goes for the guns. The vault is literally modeled after the vault from a slot machine. The cashout box is just a big yellow box with ports on it, making it indicate that something square should fit inside it, it whistles to let you know when its being captured and plays a jingle to keep the excited theme of the game. They are designed intuitively, which is inherently post-modern attribute. By contrast, look at the spike from Valorant, it has lots of moving parts for what is essentially a bomb, and it's not very recognizable to the uninitiated, it fits the style of the rest of the game sure, but at a glance alone, you can't really tell what it is. Super happy with how the game looks, it definitely keeps me coming back.
Appreciate the time you took to watch the video and leave such a valuable comment! “Cyberpunk minimalism” is a good way to describe it - I always think about it as a “stylized realism”, though it doesn’t necessarily link the dystopian future and VR aspects. I’m glad the game is keeping you and other players as interested as I am.
I believe some devs where once a part of the original DICE team which made Mirror's Edge, I actually see the colour palette and design almost similar to it and Bad Company 2 combined.
Oh yeah, definitely! The idea behind this series is for me to give an insight on how game development has tons of architecture references that go unnoticed. I recommend checking my video on Monaco as well. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
@@SPEARHEADPR I always thought Mirrors Edge was one of the best looking games when it came out and now I feel the same about the Finals. The folks behind the designs are super talented. You can really pick up on the similarities just by looking at the color palettes and lighting.

The Finals is genuinely the most fun I've had in a shooter, while at the same time being enamored with the environment (and destroying it with hammers). Me and the boys can't get enough. Thanks for the fascinating video, Happy New Year!
Thanks Juman, glad you enjoyed it! It was definitely popular and my favorite location of the map. The other POIs, both from Monaco and Seoul, weren't as impactful as the Office Diorama - but they do work well for the map playability.
Fantastic Video! I am starting to understand WHY the finals level design is amazing and innovative within the industry. I’m on my way to become a game dev myself with a focus on level design and 3d environment art. The Diorama Office heavily reduces liminal space and therefore seems more purposeful than the traditional buildings within the finals. Open space with greater lines of sight leads to less cat and mouse gameplay. I found it less entertaining to play in areas such as the apartment buildings due to the empty space, how small the windows were, and the tight corridors. maybe they’ll change those up a bit to be more memorable and dynamic.
Glad to see game-dev folks here in the comments! I agree with the comparison to other POIs, yet that’s what I like about the maps - how varied the gameplay can be. When you add the destruction mechanic to that pre-existing balance, every encounter results in a very refreshing experience. Thanks for watching!

@@SPEARHEADPR Aaaaah… I see. Wow that had to be a troublesome task. And ur other teammates be like „WTF is he doing back there?!“ and you so „Just marveling at this beautiful architecture“. Yeah! That's exactly what happens 😂. If it helps, we have map overviews for Monaco and Seoul on the Official Wiki (thefinals.wiki) where I'm the Lead Designer. the finals is a pretty good game though what are you talking bout? of course, theres personal opinion, but generally most of the people that played this game enjoyed it.. Numbers don't lie.
As someone who lived in a modernist masterpiece of a city, I want to say that it is not for me. Compartmentalization: The city is firmly divided in departments and areas for a single type of store, like the square for everything art related, or computer related. A lot of sociologists, backed by research say that people from the city tend to compartmentalize aspects from their lifes as a reflection of their environment. If you have friend groups from different places you don't want them mixing between themselves subconsciously and they usually don't. I had mutual friends that I only discovered they knew each other years in our friendship. Inorganic development: Everything is inorganic. A city is like a living organism. When you don't let it grow naturally (you can guide its growth, but some of it has to be natural) it looks like a prison. It is oppressive. It feels dystopian. Lack of nature: The city was created to be a work of art. In that work native vegetation came as a second thought. Most vegetation planted could not survive the desert like climate. The planted grass can't survive in the winter. They have to water it, worsening even more that we now have to ration water due to worsening of the climate due to climate change. So form above function, wan in the long run. Conclusion: A city should not be built to be a work of art, even if the creators say it will be functional. It's rigid structure inhibits necessary change. Most of the vegetation could not adapt to the new climate. If you build a city without thinking about the communities you want to foster, you will create a bad city but a beautiful art piece, considered to be one of humanities's cultural heritages, but a failure of a city. You can built a futuristic and good city, but you have to focus on building a city that connects humans and communities. A city should be made to improve lives, not for the sake of building something beautiful. I understand what Oscar Niemeyer wanted. He was a genius, but he failed to realize what a city truly needs to be good. I say everything I said not as an architect, as I am a Physicist, but as someone who really lived in there and who really liked the city, but could not see it as a place I want to go back to.
Appreciate the comment! I personally do not like many of the architecture/urban planning movements because of these very same reasons - they ignore [all] humans/communities as the essence of any space/city at a practical level. I live in a colony where I have experienced many of the aspects that you detailed and while the main point of these videos is just to revisit architecture principles and link them to game design at a theoretical level, I'm glad it can also spur other types of conversations about our spaces and cities. Thank you for watching.
Ever thought about what “minimalism” even means? Minimal what? It seems to me the whole idea is minimal life. Creation of any kind. Almost as if you aren’t there at all. Is this good? To live life as if you’re almost not even there? Instead of living “maximally” I DECLARE A NEW TREND! That of MAXIMALISM. Living life not to the lowest but to the HIGHEST!

@@SPEARHEADPR Aaaaah… I see. Wow that had to be a troublesome task. And ur other teammates be like „WTF is he doing back there?!“ and you so „Just marveling at this beautiful architecture“.
Yeah! I was hoping to get a closer look at the map soul. The architecture of that map blew me away. And I was hoping to recreate it in a map-editor to learn from its design. -w-
That's exactly what happens 😂. If it helps, we have map overviews for Monaco and Seoul on the Official Wiki (thefinals.wiki) where I'm the Lead Designer. Those are provided by Embark, but I also went looking for the exact location during the Closed Beta and I believe it's based on the Bank of Korea Money Museum site. Hope you recreate it!
@@SPEARHEADPR Oh man that helps a lot. Thank you so much! :D
Let‘s hope we will get a feature in the future to create custom lobbies. This way we could check out new maps in peace. Anyway thx again and have a beautiful day man! ^w^
No problem! Monaco and Las Vegas are easy to pinpoint, Seoul was tricky. I spent some time investigating where it could be based off and that's when I found the location. Skyway Stadium on the other hand is just completely virtual but it's very similar to Seoul. Thanks for watching!
This guy could make a boring game seem Interesting with just a 8 minute video.
It's all about good story-telling. Thank you so much for watching. ♥
Game is not boring
the finals is a pretty good game though what are you talking bout? of course, theres personal opinion, but generally most of the people that played this game enjoyed it.. Numbers don't lie.

@jclive2860 Im talking about In a General aspect, Any boring game that is online he can make it interesting, yall just took it the wrong way lmao
Great Video!
Great video, I really like the video idea :)
As someone who lived in a modernist masterpiece of a city, I want to say that it is not for me.
Compartmentalization:
The city is firmly divided in departments and areas for a single type of store, like the square for everything art related, or computer related.
Inorganic development:
Everything is inorganic. A city is like a living organism. When you don't let it grow naturally (you can guide its growth, but some of it has to be natural) it looks like a prison. It is oppressive. It feels dystopian.
Lack of nature:
The city was created to be a work of art. In that work native vegetation came as a second thought. Most vegetation planted could not survive the desert like climate. The planted grass can't survive in the winter. They have to water it, worsening even more that we now have to ration water due to worsening of the climate due to climate change. So form above function, wan in the long run.
Conclusion:
A city should not be built to be a work of art, even if the creators say it will be functional.
Phenomenal video essay
Thank you! You can expect more essays like this soon.
Looking forward to it. Maybe we could do a duo commentary sometime. @@SPEARHEADPR
I liked and subscribed
How are you playing? didnt the playtest end?
I recorded all the footage during the Open Beta.
Im really sorry for his teammates 😂
Believe me, some of them get really pissed off. 😂
@@SPEARHEADPR I really believe you with that 😂
Were in Virtual Arenas, so technically..
idk it creates open work spaces which creates long sight lines which isnt fun
This was such a good video

TYSM.
Hell yeah
damm u really thought this video out
Ever thought about what “minimalism” even means? Minimal what? It seems to me the whole idea is minimal life. Creation of any kind. Almost as if you aren’t there at all. Is this good? To live life as if you’re almost not even there? Instead of living “maximally”
I DECLARE A NEW TREND! That of MAXIMALISM. Living life not to the lowest but to the HIGHEST!
Dat FOV tho
