The second half of the film reminds me a lot of the Danish movie Jungledyret Hugo where the main character gets taken from his home and taken to a zoo. Except here he never returns to his home and dies there.
Oh man, I grew up watching Tao Tao the show, with that weird 'dub' (seriously, every freaking anime was dubbed like that when I was a kid) and then I accidentally saw the movie on MTV3. And, umm, BOI did that leave a sour note on the whole story. The cheerful sharing of stories vs Tao Tao just plain old ending up dying in a zoo haunts me. So, ty for making this video, this trauma DESERVES to be shared.

The finnish name is "Myyrä ja Kotka", English name is "The little Mole and the Eagle" and the original name is "Krtek a orel" Here's the link! ua-cam.com/video/xeTx2L3yvMg/v-deo.html After watching it I have to admit that it was *way* less gruesome than I remembered, but the Eagle Mole raised did get shot by a hunter, some blood was seen but the Eagle did survive in the end. Though in the end when a random fox caught the mole the Eagle just yeeted the fox to his doom and then they lived happily ever after It didn't end up being the most interesting/depressing/gruesome animated thing from my childhood but at least my mind can be at peace after seeing it again :D

Who makes this stuff for kids? Why? It feels like somebody has been really messed up and decided to express their pessimism through this film. Also, they actually made a comic of Tao Tao around the 70's (source: I found an issue of it in finnish from around that time from a summer cabin)
Now that I think about it, I could see a pattern around Tao Tao and environmental activism from that era. Barbapapa, another kids cartoon from around the same time had very similar themes. For example, on animal cruelty and hunting; in some episodes the main mission of the barba-family is to free captured animals from humans. Also, whalers are like their arch-nemesis. There are multiple episodes in the series focusing on foiling whale hunting.

Oh gosh, I saw your video in my recommended and thought "Tao Tao, we meet again". Actually I'm from Finland too and I watched the movie after reading some Tao Tao comics at the dentist. After all of that excitement of "there is a movie about this cute panda that I like" the movie was not what I expected. Let's just say I was really confused and preferred the comics. It belongs to the same corner with Watership Down-movie. Tho Tao Tao is more depressing and sad than what ever Watership Down is. If you have not seen that movie its a childhood destroying gory nightmare. Lots of dying bunnies for every children to see and enjoy :)))) but thank you for reminding me of Tao Tao! I definitely have to watch the full version of it

I remember this! We had it on VHS (might still have it somewhere, now I want to find it). It was the German dub and from what I remember, it probably had a similar censorship to the Finnish one (or I just completely repressed the more gruesome scenes, lol). I didn't watch it that much (because it made me sad), but every now and then I had to watch it, just for the bizarre feeling it has. I liked it. My mother loved watching the series, when my older brother was younger, so we eventually got that one on DVD as well.

I listened to its music when I was younger, and when I found about this I was sad because I listened to a great song of a depressing movie. I thought Tao Tao was a family-friendly movie since I was younger, but turns out I was wrong.
I watched that Cartoon as a kid. The whole time is was like "huh, that title sounds familiar " and then you dropped the bomb on me. I just screamed "OH SHIT" as it dawned on me .
