3 Versions of Marshall JCM900 Shootout - MkIII Vs SL-X Vs Dual Reverb

- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- High Gain Master Volume MkIII Vs SL-X Vs High Gain Dual Reverb. The guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty R7. The MkIII and the Dual Reverb are 100W but the SL-X is 50W, why the two former are ran in "low" mode (50W) and the latter in "high" mode (50W), not exactly the same but good enough. Settings:
Tone stacks: Treble 50%, Bass 35%, Mid 100%, Prescence 5 (however the Dual Reverb had lower Prescence)
Gain: MkIII and SL-X: Preamp: 100%, Gain: 100% (40% for low gain licks), Dual Reverb: Lead Gain: 100% (50% for low gain licks)
Master Volume: 40% using a Weber MASS 100 Power attenuator set on 1.
Cheers!
Johan
I have the SL-X and even though I'm at a point in my life where I can never turn it on I will still never sell it. I absolutely love it.
I fortunately have a basement where I can crank mine and I friggin love that amp. With a Les Paul it is tone to the bone. Rock on!
ive owned one since the start of the 90s.. never ever get rid of these amps... they are a jem.. give it a few years they would be worth around $5000 mark...
@@OG96932 Looking at Reverb 1/21/23 , top dollar fetched $1,400.00 Popular Marshall for supplied backlines, rentals.
$5k each for the Ace Frehley heads.
Wow, anyone who says JCM 900's sound bad need to watch this video of yours. Really like your vids and playing style.
As a 90s kid, this amp is pure nostalgia.
Blues Lawyer He’s playing them loud though. I always thought 800s/900s didn’t have much bottom end. The SL-X is great though. The white 900 does sound good too.
Mostly they say that because it's not the tone they like. It's a kick ass amp, and pretty much the schematics are the same as the 800, with an added gain chip, which it's what most purist don't like about it. Personally, i love it.
@@lautarosoad yessssss, 900 rocks
900’s are so underrated. They’re awesome
There's a very interesting difference in the presence, I think. The SL-X just sounds fantastic here, and superb playing Johan! I've really been enjoying your vids these past months - informative, thorough and laid back. Cheers!
Dr Pilsner Thanks! and I love your avatar! Cheers Johan
@@JohanSegeborn . Love your videos! Keep up the good work! I know this is an old vid, but I'm hoping you can share som knowledge. I just bought a JCM900 mkiii (2500), and I am really liking it so far. What I am wondering is if you have any tips for dialing it in to sound a bit more like a 1959SLP? I know speakers and cabs play a big part, and I will be using the Captor X to emulate whatever tips you might have on speakers. But what about settings on the amp? From what I understand the mkiii is the 900 version closest to the 2203, and there are a lot of tips floating around on how to get the 800 to sound more like a plexi, but they mostly involve using the low input. The 900 only has one input...
This channel is a true asset to the Marshall community. I own a 50 watt SLX and love it. Great to see such a good player with impeccable tone stick up for these often maligned amps.
I just got a 50 SL-X a month ago from G.C. It's amazing. it sounds nothing like the D.R's.
No!!! Please, just say bad things about the JCM 900 SLX....
I need the price to go down some more so i can buy one!! Haha...
MkIII Master Volume for my ears...thanks again for another great video Johan. :)
Most natural sounding one in this lineup forsure
Surprised that I preferred the Dual Reverb. Clearer and a less fuzzy top end.
Totally agree
Still have my first edition MKIII. Don't gig with it these days, but when I did people were always blown away that a 900 could sound that good.
The dual reverb sounds the sweetest.
Its has this warmth to it...... Also hearing tones from that dual reverb that sound like toens form the 1st Black Crowes album lol. Sounds great. The other amps have this high end fizzyness to my ears
I'd say it sounds the cleanest. The MKIII sounds sweeter to my ears...
Dual Reverb for me! Amazing how subjective an amp can be against three of the same variants.
Great video! I have had an SL-X for years and swear by it. No other amp can do for me what it does. I actually had mine modded to have KT66's in it. Sounds amazing! Thanks for taking the time to do a proper comparison of these great amps!
I own a '90 JCM900 mkIII (stock with EL34) as well as about a half a dozen other marshalls (mostly vintage). Very similar vibe to my '82 2203 but with more features and more gain on tap. Preamp flat out + sensitivity as low as possible is the key.
We often get on the trail of cork sniffing too much when talking about old marshalls but as tour amp for most people it would be hands down no question the JCM900 vs an 800 or (especially) a plexi for versatility.
SL-X seems to be the most clear sounding of the 3.
they all had a suprisingly unique sound, but I liked the mkiii overall!
MK iii all the way. Bought one in high school with a 2x12 for... $650!!! At a music store to boot. That Sensitivity knob always stayed at 0. Preamp at half gain and a Tubescreamer did metal all day, no fizz. Kick off TS and roll back volume for cleans. Went rack crazy and traded it like a dummy in 95. Looking to trade my EVH 50w for one now.
this demo clearly shows how it doesn't sound too shrill or dark
I will never understand the so-so reputation of the 900 series, for me is one of the best Marshalls...
There are two entirely different versions of the 900. (aside from the SLX) Master Vol models have circuitry closely developed from the classic 2204 800 series. Very smooth Marshall crunch. The extra 'gain' is achieved by using diodes (in the form of a bridge rectifier- which is quote cool) for clipping. There are indeed ICs in there but they are after the first valve (two gain stages) so they are only handling the already nice, valve tone.
The Dual Reverb models are really solid state with two token preamp valves. All the work is done by M5201 op amps with LEDs for extra clippng. All the solid state stuff is at the front end so the poor valves don't add any 'valviness' at all; all they do is amplify the already solid state tone.
It is because of these two, quite un-related versions of the 900 that reaction to them is so black and white. Folks don't realise they are often comparing two totally different amps.
@@ssolo8 the SLX is again a different amp altogether than the Dual Reverb or MK3, in that its essentially a factory modded 2203/2204 and uses NO diode clipping, rather getting is extra gain from additional ECC83 tube. Circuit wise, its closer to the Mk3 with less solidstate components
I think it's just that they don't have the bottom end end of the Jcm800. I think they sound great personally.
@@timbuk1126 an EQ like a MXR 10 band in the loop will solve that issue.
@@ssolo8 any valviness at all ? Did you listened to the video ?! Lol
I had an sl-x for years... Eventually traded it for a DR because I wanted two channels with drive and then more drive. I honestly think the A channel on the DR is the most classic sounding out of the all the 900s. It greatly reminds me of the 2203/4 and you can treat it as such. It loves boost and overdrive pedals when you need to kick it up. Turning the master up is rewarding. Rampant abuse of the B channel is what gave jcm 900 line a bad name, but it's usable for leads that need to cut. Honestly though, it's much brighter and shares the EQ with the A channel so its uses are kind of limited.
The right description of the DR. The A channel is amazing. And yes, they really need to be pushed on the master. The best tool is a power attenuator, it radically change the feeling you have with the amp. As Johan says on a comment, it have a plexi feeling. I almost never use the B channel. It's really great for heavier things, more metal. With a ts type it kills.. just not my taste. This channel is clearly not made for lower gain things. It doesn't work at all.
I don't see how the DR is close to a 2203/4. It's just not. Have you ever A/B them next to each other? I had both. not even close sounding. If anything the SL-X is the closest to the 2203/4. It's pure tubes with much more gain but can be dialed back. But a D.R isn't in the same ballpark as a 2203/4. It's closer to a 2210/2205.
Just scored a 100 watt DR 4102 on Ebay a little over a month ago for $456. It's a 1995 that came with Sovtek 5881's. Amp was thin sounding but it did have potential. Sent it in to this guy "Bill Webb" in Austin Tx. He's Eric Johnson's amp tech. Replaced the tubes to JJ E34L (Different from EL34's) and EH 12ax7's. Balanced out the EQ, Replaced 2 pots, made some adjustments to both channels (changed out some diodes in the bridge rectifier)....wow did this amp come out the shop kicking some ass. Channel 1 is nice and chimey and channel 2 you can get some good blues and all the way to some Angus/George Lynch sounds. Cleans up real nice when you roll off the volume. Got some nice punchy bottom end. Didn't even spend over $200 getting it modified. Now going to play around with the speakers with some V30's or Cream Backs. Great video comparing they different JCM 900's
+Raul Sanchez Thanks man, yeah these amps are great with the right speakers
I like the MkIII here. Warmer, purer tone (to my ears). Great video!
You are the Marshall masta!! Needed a back up amp, and after watching one of your other vids I went with a Marshall 4010 combo. Got it, and freekin love it. Keep it up Johan!!!!!!!!
Nick Carrato Thanks Nick, great to hear that. And you can't go wrong with a 4010. Cheers Johan
After hearing the SL-X I have to say the others just would never cut it again for me.
I was lucky enough to try two of these amps (Dual Reverb and the SL-X) during an European tour with my ex-band two years ago. I played in a thrash band, so it was mostly about the high gain guitar sounds, but also some cleans. I can't really remember specifically how the SL-X sounded, since I only tried it out during a sound check or something. Anyway, I don't really get why the (Hi Gain) Dual Reverb gets all the hate. To me, the amp during that tour sounded out of this world in my ears. Perfect to my playing. It was only guitar-amp during the "rhythm tone" - tight and still heavy - kind of like a Marshall version of 'Puppets' but without post-EQing and not a Boogie amp... And passive Seymour Duncan (SH6) pickups.
Per Semb Hi Per, it's probably because it's the one that didn't get discontinued. ;-) The MkIII were discontinued after a couple of years. Furthermore in the early nineties a totally different sound was in demand, which gives the JCM900 series an unfair deal. It's a great amp. Motörhead still uses it. And thrash metal is a favourite of mine since I've played it for many years. Mostly as drummer and bass player though. Cheers! Johan
The jcm 900 is a strange beast. You never hear anyone saying it is an ok amp. Either you love it or you hate it. Myself? I love it. I have two High Gain Dual Reverb. One is fitted with EL34´s and the other with 5881´s. I am pretty sure they are both factory standard so both options were available. To me this was the best sounding amp in your comparison, probably since I am familiar with the sound. But the MkIII sounded pretty cool to. Do I need another amp?
Thanks, yeah it's really underestimated. I think all three can sound equally great but I have heard harsher 900s as well. Cheers
Do you know what the difference is between the 2501 and 4501 combo's? Both have 1x12 and 50w. I have the chance to buy either.
MKiii for me, it sounds amazing then the Dual Reverb, then SLX , as usual EXCELLENT demo
Thanks, good to hear that!
Yet Another Great Demo !
Thank you very much !
Keep 'em coming !
Thanks, glad you like em!
Hi Johan. Love your demos, very professional. Plus your playing is always an added bonus.
the slx is thinner with the tubes it had in it,, i liked the mk3 in the head, but you got that dual reverb sounding great hear.
+DANTHETUBEMAN Yeah this DR had a great vintage tone
id like to hear the sl-x with el34,, its my fave tube, i think when you roll some tube through that amp you will find something to like.
Great compare! I had a 100W HGDR head but wasn`t too happy with it`s sound. Traded it for a 100W SL-X - and imidiately fell in love with the rough aggressiveness and dirt in the tone. Best choice I ever made.
Looking for a MKIII or another SL-X for spare right now ;-)
Keep on rocking!
JacknCocaine Thanks, the SLX and the MkIII are for sale at 4Sound Gothenburg, check them out. Rock on man! Cheers Johan
What about the dr was different to the slx to you? Both had model same power tubes?
@@madmikemike warmer, plexier.. softer. The A channel is amazing on those models for people who.like acdc style tone. Not metal.
Mark III sounds sizzling. Amazing midrange. So concise.
I have a 65 JTM 45, a JMP 2104 combo, a JCM 800 4104 combo, and the MKIII. Each amp takes a step in the same direction, and the MKIII/SLX are the final stage of the original Marshall evolution. If you tinker with speakers, tubes, the SLX and MKIII can sound like a vintage marshall amp, while doing modern tones as well. There is some sacrifice in compression, but nothing that diminishes my love for my MKIII. It still sounds like a lovely Marshall amp. The JCM900 DR4100, is the first amp, towards Marshall adding features, more usable clean tones, evolving into the DSL, TSL, JVM lines. To me, it evolves away from the JTM-JCM bloodline, and starts something new. They sound oooook, and if you tinker with a 4100, with EL34s, they can be pretty good, but never glorious. But since people have such low expectations of them, they often are surprised, but to me, the MKIII and SL-X, are far superior.
Nobody cares about your amp collection buddy. People came here to watch a comparison video between three 900's...
many people hate the JCM900 dual reverb but I love it... with some mods it's perfect
FranzyMorso Indeed!
Johan Segeborn for istance a 900 dual reverb with el34
Johan Segeborn for istance a 900 dual reverb with el34
Agree ! Dual reverb with EL 34 ! Love it .
Quite a surprising difference between them. The sl x is really good, it sounds much more direct (if that's the correct word). While the other two sounded pretty good as well, I have a feeling you could get that sound from an OD pedal with a bit of tweaking.
Great sounds, great info, great content. Subbed. Keep up the good work!
+Extra Normal Thanks, glad to hear it! Yeah direct is a good word, since it has a richer top end and a thicker top end Distortion it feels more present
Yep. I have a DR and my friend is getting an MkIII which is what got me to watch this. If you push the DR with a screamer or screamer-like OD, it sounds like the SL-X
I have a 1991 JCM900 4502 2x12 combo with el34 power tubes, that amp fucking rocks...
The mk3 sounds more organic to me, but i have always wantee an sl-x for sure, but i love what i can do with my mk3, its all about the pedals and proper eq with this beast i learned the hard way over the years but have been giggin with the same head for 15 years, and i wont change.
I have the SL-X and my friend has MK3. Both are excellent amps, but I of course prefer the SL-X, for metal at least. The difference is not very big though.
Went with the MKIII. I think I made the right choice. For me, it goes...
1. MKiii
2. SL-X
3. DR
1 dr, 2 mk, 3 slx.
i traded a kendrick amp for my choice of all three of these amps..I almost went with the SL-X but it was so thin. I later found out my mkiii was a 1991..There is something different about this thing..looking at it right now...i smile. it's like a warm puppy.
+Alexis White :-) yeah the MkIII is very much like an 800 or the JMP master volumes. Classic tones but with more gain. But not even a Marshall amp is as irresistible as a warm puppy
I had a dual reverb 4100 for 10 years loved that amp. Can’t understand why people hate diode clipping in amps I can’t hear a difference.
Marshall caught on to people goosing the input with an overdrive pedal and thought to cut the middlemen out with the 900.
I think the "low" 50w settings hurt the amp's tone. Pentode & triode operation will just sound different.
Johan your videos are always great sound-wise and ypur knowledge or Marshall amps. If you had a choice of JCM 900 mkiii or JCM 2000 DSL heads, both 50 watt, which is a better choice for more rock and roll influenced pop-punk/power pop?
Its a clear winner 50W SL-X !!
thanks for the comparison. MKIII wins, SL-X sounds harsh and thin, the DR has not enough bottom, MKIII has the most authentic gin structure compaired with a true vintage plexi
Your videos are a great help, great sound and playing!!
Dual Reverb. By a long shot.
I love my SL-X!! Its the 2100 model with EL34's. I pull 2 tubes to get a little smoother breakup. AWESOME DEMO!
Thanks Tim! The SL-X is a great piece of gear
I want one!
Big Daddy Ramrod Doesn't have a half power switch already though ?
You really do have some great demos. Thanks for doing this.
I own an SL-X. I could instantly tell you had the gains maxed as soon as you started playing. IMO, the SLX gets really fizzy in this territory. I think mine sounds best with the gain stages at about 1 oclock or so. The MkIII sounded great. I've played before and almost bought it.
Thanks! yeah the SL-X is a bit too fizzy for vintage rock.
If you take the preamp volume to 3-5 and roll the Gain Sensitivity to 15-17, the fizzy muddy sound clears right out but still packs a massive punch with clarity
Well, I don't really have a favourite.
The SLX is in generally highly rated, I always found it a bit fizzy - here Johan gets some tasty classic gain sounds from it.
The Dual Reverb is solid, I know this amp well and it sounds as I remember it.
The Mk3 is interesting, I'd like to try one myself in person, sounded quite thick.
Very good demo Johan!!
Why not compare an MDF JCM900 1936 cab vs a ply JCM800 1936 and a modern ply 1936?
Many thanks for your videos.
+preromanbritain Thanks! And That's a good idea for a clip. Cheers Johan
I dig the dual reverb the most...the sl x sounds like it's ready to blow up if driven any harder
+Matt Bush Yeah the Dual Reverb almost has a Plexi feel to it here
@@JohanSegeborn totally agree, softer, mid voiced.. really great.
1:08 international sign for Output
😂😂😂😂
I love the SL-X and I would still be using one as my main amp now if the reliablility issue hadn't crept in. 10/10 for sound but I just couldn't depend on it. Love your playing btw.
You might of had a lemon and it happens. I have one and it's rock solid. Absolutely zero issues with it to date (knock on wood).
@@Tennis_Fan2022same here. Had to change the bridge rectifier and clean the jacks as they often cause sound cut-out and that was it. An awesome rock solid amp.
I love the MKIII. Johan, have you tested the "recording compensated" line out at all? Any decent tones without having to blow the roof off?
great demo. the 900 definitely needs some de-mystification for some. i've owned a mark 3 for some time now, a dual reverb for a brief period, but always have been on the hunt for an slx. i think the supreme combination would be the mark 3 & slx thru a splitter. i wasn't a fan of the dual reverb's buzzy, nasal-y, brittle tone. i don't want to come down hard or sound negative but i couldn't believe the dual was the version marshall decided to reissue. nonetheless, i feel lucky and blessed to have and original and very limited mark 3!!!
p.s. [for any readers]...
the mark 3, to my ears, sounds like an 800 with a tube screamer in front, albeit, a slightly less growling tone than a 2204.
the slx sounds more like a 2204 with a ds-1 in front [again, slightly less growly]
amazing, johan, these type of vid's save people hundreds/thousands in trial & [craigslist] error.
cheers to your beers!!!
Thanks Matt! They certainly do have an undeserved rep. Great amps. Cheers! Johan
I had the mkII 1960 A&B cabs, loved it , did the pre amp conversion mod and oh yeah it certainly loved to play hi gain .
But like anything else you need to spend a lot of time to get the sound you like .
Nice group test.
+m0jfe Thanks!
lol i damn near died of laughter when you dived down on the floor :D dont know why but it was so comical
SL-X The Clear Winner Here....
Agreed
Absolutely! No diodes allowed!
I always liked the SL-X a lot more than the 900s. They had a more full sound when I tried them back in the day. Always though 800s didn’t have much bottom end, the 900 even less.
Johan, help!!!:) JCM900 or DSL50(100) ???:)
Sounds like the Hellacopters around the 2:54 mark. Anybody else heard it?
the slx kicks arse.. no comparison,
Agreed! I dumped the voltage down to 95 or so on one of my 4100's today. I used a vintage modern cab i just bought as my box and shunted the effects loop. After a bit of tweaking the tone controls, power side dimed and the gain at 7 or so on the b channel this thing came to life in a really usable musical way. 5881 100 watt version btw... Tried the boss eq in the loop as well..., interesting but not really needed.
I used to have the Dual reverb but swapped it for the MK 3 which has a much thicker richer tone , mind the SLX sounds great here too, especially when you want that extra gain for metal
+gary scott Yeah to me the MkIII has more of that classic mid crack
Hey, Johan! JUST picked up an SLX and I have yet to play it since it's 9pm here in Colorado. I have a jam space and ALWAYS crank my amps, just curious for a "base tone" what would your settings be on the SLX for a JMPish tone? Thanks man, love your videos!!!!
+ironsabbath18 Thanks man! Congrats on a great amp. I'm afraid I don't remember how I set it. But most likely full mid, little bass, cranked master, low gain, as much preamp as you can before it gets muddy. Treble/prescence probably at 50%. Cheers
WOW !!! Never heard of the SL-X model.. Now I gotta compare it for myself with a JCM900 😁🤟
I owned a Dual Reverb for about a month. It wasnt terrible at all really but it wasn't for me honestly. I took it back and got an SL-X and it just cuts thru. Perfect classic Marshall punch with some extra beef
To add I hear it in the SLX and the white one that mark3, the dual verb i don't hear the noise its actually pretty quiet to my ear. sorry about the two comments I'm new to the commenting I'm starting to get into amps more now and posting learning.
+guitarman420 These two are actuallay rather noisy
Would love to hear you do a demo on the JCM 2000, maybe even compare one to a JCM 800 and 900.
Blues Lawyer I'll do just that as soon as I get my hands on one :-)
great licks and sounds!!!!lots to steal from!!!!!
Thanks Cristopher! Be my guest! :-)
I like the SL-X and the DR best. I'd like to hear more of that Marshall clean (hairy clean)... like at the end of the vid, think Kossoff or Hendrix. I remember an interview from about 5 or so years ago with Robin Trower. He said he was using 800s and 900s. He said he used OD pedals with the 800s but that the 900s don't need them. He gets great tone, IMO. I am in the market for a used 900 but a, also exploring the DSL 40c. IDK, I think I really want a 100w head.. why not get something I want but don't need, lol. Thanks for the demos!
I love the cleans on the dual reverb. But the SL-X sounds fierce when overdriven. The Mark III is also pretty mean sounding when pushed.
I have a 2100 sl-x with 5881's and you can dial in any tone with it..Don't move it if it's st7ll hot because the bridge rectifiers get hot and tend to melt their solder and lose connection especially the Br3
People hate JCM 900s because they're not JCM 800s.
I was browsing around looking for an a smaller Amp since my 4100 doesn't get gigged any more. But after watching your vid I decided to keep her and get an attenuator instead! Any advice? I was thinking about keeping it Marshall with the power brake?
Hi, I'm very happy with the weber mass 100, very transparent. Cheers
Hello. First of all thank you so much for the video. It played a major role on me buying my SLX. I got the 100 watt version, but right now it's working on 50 watts because it has that extra feature. However, you are getting some kick ass tones out of it, and I don't think I'm doing so great. Have you got any extra tips?
Thanks man, can you tell me what speakers, guitar, cab etc, all steps in the sound chain? Cheers
Thank you so much for replying. Well I'm using a 2x12 cab with two Rola Celestion G12-50 from the early 80's. I found it in my attic, can you believe it? hehehe. Also I'm not using pedals atm, still trying to figure out the amp. I'm rolling with a Gibson Les Paul studio from 1998, but I got one Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates on the bridge and one Seymour Duncan APH1 on the neck. I got one cable on the Marshall's fx loop. It's loaded with 5881's by Sovtek. Not sure what the pre-amp's packing. 12AX7 I suppose, but I don't know the maker.
Thank you very much!!
Hi Tiago!
You've got a great guitar/pickups combination so it's probably the speakers that you need to change. Those are great solo speakers but not as great rhythm guitar speakers. Do you have any music shows or friends with cabs nearby so you can try your amp with other speakers? For a JCM900 I'd go for a G12H100. What kind of 2x12 cab is it? Cheers Johan
I'm glad. At least I really the sound of that guitar. Well, the 2x12 cab is from a portuguese brand that started making this stuff in the late 70's and 80's. The brand is called Furacão. It's a 100 watt and 8 ohms cab. I don't anything else about it. I do have a cousin who has a studio. He's got a Peavey 4x12 cab that matches the Valveking, and a 4x12 Hywatt cab but it's from the 70's so I don't know much about it as well. Just that it's old and it's got 200 watts. I kinda like the sound of that one. We also got a 2x12 Vox cab that matches the Vox Conqueror, it's also vintage but I don't know the year.
Sorry for me being such a noob, hehe.
All the best
Tiago
Hi, the hiwatt and vox cabs are probably good references. Cheers
Just picked up a 2500 SLX with EL34's in it and am really liking it!
My SL-X is EL-34 version and I will always hold onto the amp
Hmmm.. wishing for a Boss SD-1 in front of the Dual Reverb.
I briefly had a killer (early el34 one) SL-X…..I sold it only because I couldn’t find a good balance to get it to clean up with the guitar volume. I liked both gains around 2:00……great tones
Great vid 🤘🏼
The dual reverb sounds a little muted compared to the other two. Maybe less presence is a good way to describe it. That's what mine sounded like and I have the 100W head version with 1960B cabinet. I changed the tubes and it brightened up nicely and the fizziness rounded out in a good way as well. I would still describe it as dark though and have been looking at other modifications to liven it up without making it ear piercing. I also modified it using the same type of circuit used to switch the reverb to switch out the diode clipping with an extra footswitch. That seemed to move it in the right direction because it was less compressed and the tubes are driven harder with more signal. Have you heard of Tommy Folkesson? He has a video demo of his modification of this amp and it sounds amazing. If he lives in your area please see if you can listen to a modified jcm900 and give us a report.
hungry4des Hi! Yeah Tommy Folkesson is a fellow Swede! I sure like his work.Cheers
Would love to hear this comparison through a 4x12"...
Thanks Johan very cool and helpful
Marshall rocks!!! I love all of my Marshall amps.
Have a great day!
#marshall #guitar
Personally like all three, and would gladly own any of them.
Great shoot out, once again!
I can't believe Marshall would reissue that POS Dual Reverb! Sounds like a toy compared to the other better 900's!
Thanks Andy! I think the MkIII would cannibalize on the 2203 Reissue and SL-X were probably too peripheral. Cheers
+Johan Segeborn Probably true. But they would be way better off offering a 2204 JMP reissue!
Yeah, there should be a business case for that
I've owned all 3 and never had a bad tone from any of em. I never understood the hate with this amp. Its not the lemon that was the jcm2000 TSL122 ;)
I know this is years old, but the 900 is way thinner than an 800. Depending on the cab you have, this could be a huge difference, I wouldn't want to plug one of these into a Marshall loaded with T-75s. People were probably just using the wrong cabs for the amp.
Great video as always!
I have a MkIII 2500 50w from 1990. Its a true beast when you crank the MV abit :-)
Hi mate you still have that mkiii? I’m about to buy one... tell me what you don’t like of it please
@@marcuribba I sold it. Which i regret alot...
Just buy it, you won't regret it. They sound so so good.
Obviously depends very much on the guitar and if you were to tweak the settings to each guitar, but in this test I very much preferred the Dual Reverb. All three are great amps for different situations but I found the SL-X in this scenario a little too much in the high end, screamy and not in a good way. The DR was much more balanced and full IMO.
Thanks Adam
I liked the browner tone of the DR.
People always seem to like only the mk3 and slx. The dual reverb sounds like smoother Marshall crunch and the other 2 sound like fizzy bees...funny
Jim71 Yeah, and I couldn't see any obvious mods. Cheers
Johan Segeborn Cool demo's all around on your channel. Checking it all out. Thanks.
MKIII 50 Watt is awesome! Not fizzy !! It is a beast of an amp.
Slx is too buzzy. I was surprised at how well the 4500 sounded. Great job Johan!
Buzzy cause he maxed out the pre-amp. If you go half way there is NO buzzy and still a shitload of gain.
Love that SLX!
Hi Johan, very nice comparison! I like it and very nice videos so far, keep it up! I liked the Mk III the most, even though I own a DR 100W (still) with EL34s as mine was made in 1990/91. I think also Dagnall Transformers. If you can try it out, a BBE Sonic Stomp in the effects loop works really nice and as already mentioned a EQ.
Goran Krznaric Thanks! The BBE seems really cool. Gonna get one. Cheers Johan
Remember to keep your fx jacks clean that can really affect your tone on these amps. I use a SL-X with el-34s from 1993 as my main amp its a beast.
Is that my JCM 900 MkIII in White Tolex? There was two years when I could not even hold a guitar so I sold it around 2008/2009. I had just put it back to factory spec's because when I got it someone had hot rodded it to over 120watts. I liked it much better hot rodded! I played through a full stack of the JCM 900 1960A and 1960B speaker cab's. I used to live in Suffolk County N.Y. If that's mine, I want it back, PLEASE!
+PeterDad60 It's in Sweden now along with the full stack :-)
Great, so how much do I have to spend to get my amp back? Whatever it costs-I do not have it yet!
My JCM 900 Mkiii had 5881's in the power section and was also hot rodded with extra diodes. Foolishly I had it returned to stock and never liked it after that.
I have 3 of the 100w (4100) dual reverb heads from '91-92 and they were fitted with 5881's from the factory. I wouldn't play anything else. I do own a 50w (2500) slx head also and that sounds pretty awesome too. That's running 5881's. Haven't tried the mk111 yet.
The MkIII is a bit more like the 800s and JMPs. A bit less nasal. Cheers Johan
great! i have the jcm mkiii Master volum 2100 an d im very sorprise! good test ! from Argentina
+Lucas inkisicion Centurion Thanks Lucas, cheers from Sweden!
I have MkIII and really don´t wanna any other amp.
Have a 93” slx. Came with el34’s in it. How can I be sure thats its not a 5881 model? Doesn’t have the sticker of course on the front. Love your vids Johan!!!
Didn't make 5881's in 93.
My SL-X had a bad brittle tone. It was terrible. Like a bad stomp box. Your SL-X sounds incredible. Is there a difference per amp? Does yours have a brittle tone at certain settings? Thanks!
+chiiitmeng sorry to hear that. This one sounds great on most settings. Maybe you should take it to a guitar tech?
Toss up between the mkIII and DR for me. I like the smoothness of the DR, but also kind of like the extra bite of the MKiii. The SL-x didn't do it for me like I thought it would
I love how people hate on diodes and then swear by drive pedals. What do you think your magical ts808 or any other drive pedal is...??
The white one has the Iron Maiden tone , the slx was kinda harsh to me , but the bad rap these amps to me is the gt75 speakers Marshall has been using since the late 80's , not sure why they continue to put those in most of there cabs
My favorite is the SL-X. I would like to buy one somewhere, but I can never find one for a good price or AT ALL.
+OldSchoolAddict Thanks, they're rather common and cheap in sweden. Cheers Johan
+Johan Segeborn Awesome. Where I'm from they're a lot more rarer so the chances are a little more slim for finding one in good condition and/or a good price. Also I believe the Mark III is the rarest of them all. Love the videos, keep up the good work!
+OldSchoolAddict Indeed, the crappy Dual Reverb is everywhere, the SL-X is fairly hard to find
Bullitt Garage Yeah I must agree yet disagree that not all the Dual Reverb amps are horrendous. The ones they made from 1990-1993 or so when they still used EL34's in all of their amps are decent. Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day used an EL34 loaded Dual Reverb from 1992 until mid 1994 with his guitar Blue and got a pretty solid tone. But aside, the SL-X remains king, regardless if it has EL34's or 5881's (There's one on Reverb and eBay for $750 USD right now with EL34's in it). I also wish that the SL-X was a part of the vintage reissue series. That's how great of an amp it is.
I have an SL-X.
People are always trying to get me to sell it.
