Clicked for Leon playing a Gil Yaron into a glorious Marshall. Stayed for the entire video, because this was completely amazing. Zen absolutely crushes it again with some of the best amp demos on UA-cam.
Great demo. I had to smile when it came to the Zakk Attack '88 section. The Boss SD-1 can sound a bit meh with some amps, but into a 2203 it is pure magic.
I've got this amp myself. I don't think I will ever hear an amp that has a better overdriven sound than this one. I like it with all kinds of speakers except for the V30. This video confirms that as well for me.
Sounds incredible. This is quite possibly the best series of amp videos I've ever seen. Amazing job guys! So great to hear these amps with all these guitars and cabs. Thanks so much!
Very nice video! Great sounds and playing! I´ve owned this same amp since 1985, new filtercaps a couple years ago and checking up on circuitboard and soldering. I recently got hold of a 90-s 1960AX cab with the 6402 coned greenback remakes and it made huge difference nailing those vintage rock sounds (used to run 1991 V-30s for a more "metal" sound) . A little lead-push from a SD-1 and a dunlop wah is all I need right now. Thank you for the inspiration!
@@zenamplification any ideas on getting this tone out of a helix floor? I can't take this 2203 out anymore, but want to take the tone. Haven't been able to find it in the helix.
I play a ‘79 JMP 2204 through a 60’s Marshall B cab loaded with 25w English greenies with Les Paul p90 guitars. Crank that amp up with a LP Jr. Hear that sound? That’s the sound of women runnin’ round with no panties on. Have mercy Miss Percy.
Excellent video! I have a 1976 Marshall JMP 2203 MkII Master Model Lead 100W, and it screams. I have played JCM800's and I even had a 71 class A head. The 2203 just gives you great tone and everything that you want in a Marshall. I bought mine from a friend in 1980. It came with a 1960A cabinet all for the whopping price of $600.00. It has been my companion since. I had a 50 watt /switch put in for small clubs.
Yep, that is what my 78 JMP also sounds like….I bought it 30 years ago with the original 4x12 loaded with G12 65H…. still use it in my studio…it is an ungodly loud beast and yes it does immaculate Blackmore….and I primarily use the low input with my Leslie and a Hermida Zen Drive…..
That's the definitive rock sound. I personally think I prefer the 50 watt JMP 2204 version with a little less clean headroom. They are both also nearly identical to the JCM 800 equivalents, but much more pleasing to the eye.
I have a 1977 and done the Friedman FAT CAP mod: a 330uf cap across the 820 ohm resistor that connects to the 3rd pin on V2 to ground. It thickened it up and gave it a slight top end boost as well.
Great video guys! I have a 1977 JMP and it is absolutely incredible. Lots of tone shaping using simple controls. Very loud amp but gives you all kinds of rock tones. It’s not a rectifier and it never tries to be. I run mine through a 1960AX with G12M Greenbacks.
How is it I'm only now discovering this channel?! Loving everything on display here, amazing work guys! Also love to see G12M-65 Creambacks in use, as a user of them myself. Not that I'm biased or anything.
That's what I use. Either with Presence 0, Bass 10, Mid 10, Treble 10 Pre 7-8, or Presence 4-5, Bass 10, Mid 4-5, Treble 10, Pre 7-8. Klone in front of it. That's witha 2x12 though. 4x12 I'll back the Bass off
I love my 79 JMP 2203, but love my 71 1987 a little bit more. My fave cab with the 2203 is a 77 slant with the original 55hz 30 watt Blackbacks on top and V30’s on bottom.
ALL the clips sound great, but the Badlands riff was so spot on, it got me to wondering if that's the amp he used for that album. I assumed it was a "1959" style amp, but in that clip Leon nails it with the 2203! (it's probably 90% Leon and 10% amp and cab anyway)
The 2203X is the closest I think we've heard, but yes it's at the brighter end of the scale. The old ones all differ though, hard to know if it's age or they started off that way.
Amazing tones throughout guys! Question: I have a 1974x that I’d like to be able to make it sound occasionally like a JMP 2203/2204. Any pedal that could get me into this territory?
Just a gain knob. This circuit however does sound pretty great with the master up and preamp gain down a bit though. Changes the character of the drive and sounds a bit more old school / plexi. It does get LOUD though.
@@zenamplification That's great! Guess it's the first edition Marshall with gain control that sounds great. I will look into one of these. I love that 70s hard rock sound!
Might have been asked already, but, are you using any type of attenuator on this? Looking to get a 2203 or 2204 pretty much exclusively for recording so want to be able to drive pre and output valves without it flapping out my ribbon mics.
Not for these clips but it's a good idea if you value your hearing. We like the Power Station and Rockcrusher, but there's a number of other good options these days. We have a painful video comparing a few of them here: ua-cam.com/video/VGz2aBd-lbU/v-deo.html&
The JMP 2203 Master Volume was released in the mid 70's. When the JCM800 series was introduced, many models were carried over mostly unchanged other than the cosmetics. So yes this is very similar to what most people think of when you say 800.
I had one of those and like the dickhead I am I sold it. I asked the guy that bought it if he was gonna gig it and he reckons it was going straight to the pool room. It was even better than my fave slightly rodded 800. That I also shouldn’t have sold. Killer amp.
That’s the tone! Period.
it is the pinnacle of rock hands down. Thanks for not playing mindless solos and actually have a very good production as well. Sick sound the best
The tones with that 345 are just awesome.

Agreed, and for $50!
There's simply no denying how glorious that tone is when the Full Mix kicks in. Man, I could bathe in that forever.
Multiple classic tones done SO well with awesome riffing!🤘🏻
Fantastic demo!

THEE sound of rock n roll
I have the bottom to that cabinet with 55hz G12-H 30s and a '77 JMP 2204 to go with it. The sound of rock!!
Wow that thing sound crazy awesome 😎
I love the format of how you present the amps and you have all the necessary info without being too much. Keep up the good work. subscribed

Cheers Pat! The late 60's Marshalls get most of the glory but the late 70's - what a time for rock n' roll amplification.
Absolutely! I love some high gain, saturated metal tones but it always come back to a classic Marshall for me.

Man this sounds awesome! I have a JMP 2204 clone from MGL Amps. Has this tone!
BTW; one small detail... what brand of guitar strings is preferred? That does factor in to the tone slightly.
Just the usual suspects, D'addario, EB and GHS mostly. Maybe a slight change, but nothing of much consequence in our experience.
I love how Black Shuck from the Darkness is a standard on this channel
The ever so slight AC-DC influence of this riff has always appealed to us 🤘

Not really across Jake's gear at that time so not sure, but agreed - Leon brought the goods on that riff 🤘🏼
Yeah, I reckon that JMP50 out-Shucks the JMP2203.
But those early 80's tones were so great to hear.
Yep that small box is pretty hard to beat for straight up rock n’ roll 🤘

Time to treat yourself - sell that pesky car and relive your youth via crushing JMP tones.
oh god i want that Gil Yaron!!

Jmp master volume, the best Marshalls ever made… that’s all…
For Blackmore tones you have to use G12H's. He never used M's at all and it's a big change!
Strat - Marshall - G12H.... now that's one way to cut through a mix!
I’m looking for a 2203 myself atm
Good luck with the hunt, they're getting pricey.
What is the most tonally accurate JCM800 2203 that you can buy new? Ceriatone sounds brighter and so does the 2203x, in my opinion.
