    THIS MATCH IS INSANE!!!! 🤯 First of all, I'm so happy that Tsukki is ok and ready to continue dominating. Secondly, can you guess what my "Play of the Episode" is?? I'll give you one hint.... Noya 😉
    All of my fingers and toes are crossed that Hinata will score this cliffhanger attack. How are they so good at keeping me on the edge of my seat at the end of every episode?!?!? That's skill.

    • @SJ-dl6uc
      @SJ-dl6uc Рік тому +4

      @@SnailHatan I actually started to. my first language is Farsi (Persian) and it's phonetic. translated Japanese to English alphabet is literally phonetic. no diphthongs or mixing of two vowels. and grammatically, linguistically abd orally we distinguish and put emphasis on syllables. so repeating Japanese in a similar native accent is easy. to the point that I only pronounce the names or other terms with the Japanese accent, which is essentially phonetic sounds + emphasis on syllables. it's v encouraging, cz the concept of kaji and written Japanese is such a foreign concept, being able to pick up at least one part of the language is reassuring. even if you don't understand it, hearing and watching in context helps, a lot of ppl learn English or other languages that way (I did English). the usual Rx for learning language within a the country is to watch their soap operas. long, serialized, heavy dialogue stories, w enough frivolity that you don't need to be a dedicated fan.
      (by emphasis on syllables i mean how most western and/or English speaking reactors say **Tsukishima**, Asahi, Tanaka, Hinata, Oikawa, Bokuto, Akaashi (the long extended phonetic vowels) softly or with diphthongs. if you put the correct emphasis and use phonetic sounds you'll pronounce them correctly.
      the "wa" in Oikawa is so exaggerated in the transatlantic English accent. the best way to remember how to pronounce his name is to remember how Ushiwaka says it. he's so dry and his voice is hefty. makes pronunciation clear and simple.
      but Tsukishima is the worst cz there's no "oo" sound in Tsukishima, where there's in Tsukki. Tsukishima is pronounced with a wide closed mouth "ee" sound. I can't explain it well, but it's definitely not "sooki"shima.)

    Noya's double save is probably the highlight that most viewers remember about this episode, but my favourite is Tsukki's face off with Ushijima. He's on equal footing with and directly challenging one of the top 3 aces of the country, when it would have been unthinkable for S1 Tsukki or S2 Tsukki who never had the big talk with Bokuto / Yamaguchi. His development was foreshadowed as early as S1 when Tsukki got serious in the 3 on 3 match with Hinata and Kageyama.

    This is going to be a long one (apologies beforehand). I actually love Wahijo as a character. He is someone who was small and really good especially in receiving, maybe could have been a libero. But sadly, I don't think the libero position existed at the time. During his time, it really was all about height and power. His coaches and teammates reinforced that belief and told him that he needed to be taller. Years later, he becomes a coach and doubles down on this belief and achieves great success.
    We all look at him and say that he couldn't make it because he wasn't good enough or talented enough (which I don't think is true). Washijo was way more skilled at the same age than Hinata is currently given that Hinata didn't have a proper team until high school.
    Realistically, if Hinata had gone to school anywhere else would he be a starting player? He can't serve or receive, is not a great blocker and requires a setter of Kageyama's caliber to utilize him offensively. Washijo never had the support system that Hinata did. I think the line that rings true for me in this regard and is one of the best is the show is that Hinata says at the start of each season. 'A tall, tall wall looms in front of me. What’s the view on the other side? What does it look like? The view from the top…it’s a view I could never see on my own. But…if I’m not doing it alone…I just might be able to see it.'
    The belief of height and power above all else instilled in him my his own teammates and coaches and the overwhelming success he has had with this ideology (given that Shiratorizawa is a perennial powerhouse) has made him over the years a bitter and jaded man living vicariously through his team's success. In that aspect, Karasuno and Hinata are a perfect foil to Washijo's ideology. And that's what makes this match so great, beyond the volleyball.
    Edit: I think it is important to note that I think the ideology that was challenged was height and power above anything else. Not Shiratorizawa's style of perfecting of individual skills. Because as Haikyuu repeatedly shows us each team has their own style that should be acknowledged/respected and each of them is perfect for their own team (bringing out the best of each team). The only difference is that Karasuno is still evolving given that so many of their starters are first-years and they have a new head coach. The other schools have maybe one or two starting first years and none of them have the same impact as Karasuno's. For example, Kageyama and Tsukkishima go head to head with Oikawa and Ushiwaka (the two best players in the prefecture). And of course, Hinata who just picks a fight with anyone. You just don't see that with any of the other teams. So, though the others do add to their repertoire the effect is much more pronounced for Karasuno and their whole style appears completely new because they are still adapting trying to perfect it.

      I would also just add that he's had this philosophy for 40 years. If Hinata proves here that short players can make a difference on the court then it means that for 40 years his philosophy has been wrong, which means those 40 years he could have actually been the one on the court rather than living vicariously through others, which from some perspectives means 40 years wasted. Most of us also don't like being proven wrong on a stance we take 5 seconds ago. A stance you've stuck by for 40 years and has been reinforced by other players, coaches, and results would be devastating for most of us, so I actually sympathize with him on that. He is an example of what Hinata could have been if he didn't have the support of Karasuno while Hinata is an example of what he could have been had he had to proper support of his teammates and coaches but didn't because of the times he was born in.

    • @preetamozarde5040
      @preetamozarde5040 Рік тому +10

      @Canadian Dude Hmm, he would have been forced to accept that his philosophy was wrong for 40 years but I think he knows given the time period he was born in and his situation, he could not have been on the court. But during his 40 years of coaching, he could have been helping people like Hinata achieve their dreams. He doesn't have to be bitter about it. That's why initially he was like 'I, with my 40 years of coaching want to deny you'. But then, at the end of the match he has this kind of frustrated grin on his face because though he is upset that they lost, he can't help but feel something positive (happiness, maybe?) inspite of himself. He is still not entirely convinced but still acknowledges that Hinata will probably continue to grow stronger even if his path is treacherous.
      Atleast, that's how I see it.

    I have a little more sympathy for Washijo - he was probably told for years growing up that volleyball is only for tall people. Could he have pushed through that anyway? Sure, but when you're a kid and everyone you look up to and respect (either coaches or senior players) tells you one truth that seems like common sense, it's hard to break through that.
    I wonder if Hinata had started in a more traditional structure instead of basically coming to a desperate Karasuno that came with a particularly open- minded team and a freaking gifted setter if Hinata wouldn't have also had this drive beaten out of him by a relentless "this is obviously the truth". Hinata has a combination of drive + supportive environment and also benefits from like 40 years of volleyball evolution.
    Sure the coach could handle this a bit more maturely, but this is his inner monologue - he's not actually saying this to anyone. I see this as more of him trying to work through his whole world view coming crashing down on him and the regrets that would inevitably come with it. Someone is showing him a path that he didn't know existed when he's no longer able to take that path for something that he really loves.

      The Washijo/Hinata contrast is so powerful for me. It just really speaks volumes to how much chance comes to play in determining people's success, worldview, life path, etc. If one little thing was different in either of their lives, this could be an entirely different story.

Probably not :)

    • @tinyblossom
      @tinyblossom Рік тому +2

      I’m guessing from his age that Washijo-sensei came up in the pre-libero era, so there was almost no opportunity for a small player. Also, I could see him thinking “I love volleyball so I should attend the school with the best volleyball team.” (That’s why Shiratorizawa was Kageyama’s first choice). But then (like Tsukki’s brother) he would have arrived to find there was so much talent that he wouldn’t play in a match, ever. I have a low opinion of Washijo-sensei. We have already seen evidence he is the type of coach who is reckless about the physical safety of his teenaged players. Recall Shirabu (setter) slapping his own face hard and commenting that if it had been a practice match, coach would have slapped him in the face. And Tendou told Goshiki that coach made them sprint home after a match because they played badly. I’ll stop with examples for now to avoid spoilers but watch for further examples.

    • @darkvalkyrie7
      @darkvalkyrie7 Рік тому

      @@tinyblossom I'm in no way arguing that he's a fantastic coach. I was just expressing that I have a bit more sympathy for him on how he views Hinata's success and his desire to "disprove" that short people can be successful (and not necessarily in just a libero role).
      However, I will note that there are cultural differences (as Sarah has noted in a previous episode) and that he has a lot of respect from his current and past players. Also, I've watched the end of the anime and read through the entire manga and I think those examples you noted were the only ones where he was *physically* distasteful (from my perspective and culture).

    It's fascinating that Sarah, as a pro Volleyballer, thinks of Tsukki's involvement as a cliffhanger because she knows about the bench-whistle rule, but the rest of us, the moment we saw Tsukki, KNEW he'd play, starting first serve next ep, because we'd never been told about any such rule.

    Here is a little detail that I'd like to add. Notice Oikawa calls "that miracle-like (or God-like)" what Karasuno players call "The freak-quick". This is because, of course why would Oikawa call it the same? He doesn't share time with our players. But they do have a name for it nonetheless.
    It's a small thing but it all adds up to making the characters and the world of this anime feel real, like "of course Oikawa and Iwaizumi must talk about "the freak-quick" off camera!"

    Watching people react to that cliffhanger always kills me 😂
    Can’t wait for next week!
    I saw that someone warned you of the art changes for season 4. Just wanted to add that it was a decision made by the producers to make the art style match what’s in the manga. Season 1-3, while beautiful, is very different from the manga, which is more simple in its art style.
    Also, season 4 was created during peak Covid lockdown, so there are moments where the quality of the animation really takes a dip. But I’ll also say that some of my favourite-ever shots from Haikyuu come from s4 (and I’m an animator myself, so I’m picky 😅). The quality is there for the big/important moments that need it most.
    Just a heads up! It’s still so so enjoyable, as long as you sort of understand the circumstances for the changes.

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball

      You've made me a little nervous to see the animation quality in season 4...

    • @MasterPpv
      @MasterPpv Рік тому +9

      @@SarahPavanVolleyball You shouldn't be too worried! It's still really solid, especially in the moments that matter, like they mentioned. The style becoming more simplistic often tends to make people feel like the animation has also taken a dip, and while in certain instances it does, the two aren't directly related in the way most people who don't know the intricacies of animation perceive.
      You'll absolutely notice the style change; it's incredibly obvious. You'll notice it in the fidelity with which they draw and shade characters (especially hair), you'll notice it in the way that they sometimes purposely exaggerate proportions for certain shots (way more than they have in previous seasons), and you'll notice it in the way that things in focus are separated from things not in focus (there's always been a difference but it becomes more pronounced next season, IMO). The important thing to note about all of that though is that it's a conscious stylistic and artistic change, not necessarily a drop in quality. The simplicity of the style when contrasted with the highly detail-oriented style up to now gives the impression that it's a drop in quality, but most of the time it's not the case.
      Also, all of that is only really affecting the WAY the illustrations are drawn, and animation is about how those illustrations move. There's a lot of spots in season 4 where the animation quality is on par or better than previous seasons, but there are also spots where it's noticeably restrained as well, largely due to lack of budget or manpower (or both) thanks to COVID. The pandemic really hit the anime industry as a whole pretty damn hard.

    I think the big difference between Hinata and Washijo (Shiratorizawa's coach) is that when Hinata started training and developing physically he didn't have any coach or experienced player to learn from. But he also didn't have someone that would say "You are too short, there's no point in you playing offence in volleyball, you can't score". There was noone do discourage him. So he developed physically, increased his speed and agility, but he was bad at specific skills needed to play volleyball, which he is learning at Karasuno. On the other hand, Washijo had coach, he learned how to recieve, serve, etc., but also his coach didn't motivate him to train harder and deserve the main spot in their team. Instead, he would always say that Washijo had no shot because of his height. And at some point Washijo agreed, forgot about his dreams as a player and became a coach and very good one at that. Now he wants to stop Hinata to prove that his decision was right.
    I really like their comparison and this helps me kind of understand Washijo's point, even though I want Hinata and his dedication to the sport win at the end.
    Also, yes, Noya is and will always be the GOAT of Karasuno's defence line. If I'm not mistaken the reason why at the begining everyone thought Karasuno was an interesting team is great libero Noya, genius setter Kageyama and strong ace Asahi. Noone knew about other players before this tournament.
    And I love how this anime shows the MVP of this match Tsukki, but never forgets other players and their impact, like subbed Narita or the trio of Asahi, Tanaka and Sawamura, who played all 5 set for the first time in their life without getting subbed. This anime is just great!
