Day Old Chick Basics: Feeding and Care!

  • Day old chicks need the basics:
    A brooder with a regulated heat source:
    incubatorwareh...
    Depending on the type of brooder, the bottom of the brooder can be lined with newspaper or paper towels then use small flake pine shavings or fine hay.
    Chick Starter Feed- Non medicated
    Fresh water with two tablespoons of ACV for the first week, then change to a liquid vitamin. Change water daily.
    Nutri-Drench Liquid Vitamins for chicks and adult chickens:
    www.chewy.com/...
    Also Available at Tractor Supply Stores
    www.tractorsup...
    The chicks will stay in the brooder for 2 to 3 weeks of age. At that age they will start outgrowing the brooder and will try to fly out of it.
    Move them to a larger area like a grow out pen or the new coop. Enjoy and good luck!
    Happy Chicken Keeping! 🐤🐤🐤🐤

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop  4 роки тому +1

      Hello. Good observation. That is a genetic defect and weak breeding in the parent stock. It causes cross beak. When the chicken is older, the lower half can be trimmed even with the upper. As it grows out again, repeat. The chicken lives a normal life and can eat fine. These chicks I hatched myself using fertile eggs ordered from Ebay. Thanks for watching and be safe!

    Why are you using a regular light bulb and not a red heating bulb?

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop  5 років тому

      Hi. Great question. Mainly because of the size and depth of the plastic tub. A white bulb gives off enough heat and I use a heating pad under the tub for night time. The red heat lamp would be too hot and cook them. Once I move them outside , I use the red heat lamp.

    I got a 3 day old chick from a feed store that I saw was being for a better word “bullied” by other chicks pecking her and stepping on her, Ive been able to get her to drink water and she pecked at her crumbles but other then that she’s lethargic, I have not seen her actually walk. I’m really worried 😟

      Christon Huffmaster Hello Christon, that great you are trying to save it. I am the same way. It sounds like the chick got beat up pretty bad. Make sure they have heat and put a good poultry liquid vitamin in the water. Also try mixing some yellow cornmeal in with their crumbles to encourage eating and promote weight gain. You may want to put one more chick with yours for company and they see each other eat and drink. Fingers crossed for a good outcome. Good luck.

    Hi sweet chics!, I have two orphan chics hatched out under a broody hen who hatched one egg unexpectedly two weeks ahead of the other eggs, she then pecked the other two chics on their heads, I removed them from the Coop, and have them in my bath along with an open ended crate lined with tea towels, should I have a lamp over ,them? They are now 4 days old ,
    feeding and drinking, how and when do I reintroduce them to the adults, four hens and one 3 week old chic, this chic and mother are in a separate enclosed run where there is an adapted rabbit hutch. I have cats and dog, and as it's rural Ireland there are plenty of predators outside, not to mention rain! although we have had a wonderful heatwave recently, due to end today. My little flock have full use of my garden where they seem to be feeding on frogs 😝 due to the unusual dry spell, they also get mixed corn and layers pellets.
    My next question is how do I sex the three chics?.
    Thank you for your video and your expertise.
    From a home poultry keeper.

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop  3 роки тому

      Hello. You should put a lamp or put a heating pad cover with a towel so they stay warm. Do this until two to three weeks old. I would not introduce them to the older chickens until they are two to three months old.
      You could try to divide the pen with the hen with one chick and put the younger ones on one side so they can see each other but the mother can't hurt them.
      Start putting vitamins in their water. Good luck and happy chicken keeping!

      Hello. The chick should be ok if you see that the chick is eating and drinking ok. The eyes will heal quickly now that you separated it. Once the eyes are healed up, I would put another chick the same size with that one for company. Watch the broody to be sure she doesn't hurt any other chicks, if so separate all the chicks from her. I had a bad broody once that would pick her chicks away. She didn't like raising babies. Good luck 👍 💓
