I know it’s a personal taste but I feel like you don’t need a “likeable” character to have a good character, Scott has a good arc I feel, that being said no way Zac Efron nails the line delivery like Michael Cera, and as far as the movie goes (and all of Edgar Wright’s films) the movie just oozes style and is not lazy when it comes to the technical execution and the script
Seems like this movie has been getting a resurgence lately, which I'm extremely happy about! But it's worth noting, Scott and Ramona are not supposed to be good, likeable people.
holy shit Zac Efron as Scott pilgrim sounds like the worst casting decision I have ever heard. If Greg doesn't like the movie or have any passion you guys shouldn't make him rehash the plot. It just kinda takes away from the fun of the whole thing.
Ya hes not a perfect conventional movie hero, hes a general mess up thats stuck in a rut and doesn't no what to do, very relatable dude not every person evolves into captain America after a character arc. Some people (id argue almost all outside of movies) simply take small baby steps of growth to becoming better
Ya its totally cool if he doesn't like the movie but it really makes the podcast a worst product (which this is) when the person is so deflated while explaining. Again he can totally not like it and when he's on its dope but its not interesting hearing someone who's super uninterested, who woulda thought
Honestly, almost wish Greg wasn't on this, he almost sounds pissed that he has to recap this, or pissed that he was forced to watch this? I don't know...
I think he has a thing of not being on some in reviews for movies he just doesn’t like. He does go hard on other in reviews so it’s a balance and honestly after the last two EWIR episodes this movie was probably one he didn’t like. I don’t think he sounded ‘pissed’ moreso just wanted to get back to playing games.
I fully respect Greg having his own opinion on movies, it’s one of the reasons why I love KF but I also realized that he tends to let his dislike of the movie affect his plot reviews. I had a similar issue when he recapped Lego Batman, if he doesn’t fully gel with a movie he will skip over parts of the film that other people would probably like to point out and discuss. It’s a weird energy to the videos that I wish they would address as a group before going into an episode.
“Is that girl a boy too?” “He punched the highlights out of her hair!!” “Sometimes I let him do the wide shots when I feel like gettin’ blazed in my winnie” “Did you really see a future with this girl? Yeah, with jet packs and stuff” This film is the best. (Also I disagree with the Scott Pilgrim ladykiller stuff because I don’t think that’s supposed to be his role)
"Scott, if your life had a face I would punch it." "Im gonna pee due to boredom" “You punched me in the boob. Prepare to die, obviously!” "I don't think I can hit a girl... They're soft." "She has to go. She knows we suck." So. Many. QUOTABLE. Lines!
Although Shaun of the Dead is great, this is easily my favourite of these. Even just stylistically, it's a cracking film in it's own right, and it has some great tunes too! Yes, Micheal Cera is the weak link, although great in other roles, like Youth in Rebellion....
The guy with the glasses has no consistency. When he likes a movie he relays the plot better but when he doesn't care for it it shows and it really brings down my enjoyment of these reviews.
i haven't seen many of their reviews but being fair a lot happens on scott and the timeline is easy to screw up.maybe your right maybe greg just had a hard time reacalling everything in order.
#FunFact Michael Cera was the touring bassist for Mister Heavenly's first album. They were one of the best super groups of all time! Honus Honus - Man Man, Joe Plummer - Modest Mouse, Nick Thornburne - ISLANDS, and Michael Cera?! Crazy...
Top 10 anime betrayals of all-time. This is the closest I've ever been to the thumbs down button. This film is not just flawless. It's perfect. It hit at the exact right time in the exact right way. I have seen it countless times, 10 in its original theatrical releases. I can quote it from front to back. The only thing that would have been worse is if that stupid Lord of the Rings sucks bullshit was real. This film fucks. It is literally perfection in every way. I can't believe you guys made me agree with Kevin....
I think this movie definitely has a bunch of flaws, but it's a visually entertaining movie and is a great way to show how weird and versatile Edgar Wright is. The second half does definitely rush through a lot, and I think that this movie coming out after the graphic novels may have helped it. Also, I always use this movie as an example of "movies I like where you're not supposed to like the main character at first."
I really love this movie because your not supposed to like Scott until the end when he learns not to be a horrible person, Also I loved all the references Tim brought up, there all amazing.
Saying this constructively, when Greg does the recap of a movie he doesn't like it really really brings down the energy. The energy to listen it and it also seems to impact the rest of the guys as well.
Posting my haikus here because I was proud of them The soundtrack is great Seven ex boyfriends, not eight Steve Rodgers can skate? Pilgrim kind of sucks Dating a high schooler? Yuck But Sex Bob-Omb fucks! Scott learns from mistakes And earns the power of love And Self respect, too.
It is kinda the whole point, there real young adults who are still learning. Its like when Greg delivers his I used to say gay but learned it was wrong story. They are dumb young people learning what's right and wrong. I feel like if they watched a movie of there own arcs as young people becoming responsible adults they'd say "the characters just not likeable" 🤣
after watching 8 minutes and then reading a lot of the comments, I'd rather not finish this review. I'd rather not see them shit on what an amazing movie this is. I've seen it so many times cause it's just so damn good.
I liked him in Superbad, but he’s the actor who needs a good supporting cast to make him good. As an actor he’s mediocre and I really think they should have went with Michael Amhara o for Scott. He already was in sky high with MEW and they were good together.
casting michael cera as scott makes a lot of sense because how often do you see a hot woman dating an average looking guy who treats them like shit? and in your head, you’re always like damn why don’t they break up with them they could definitely get someone better. that’s scott pilgrim.
Love this movie, disappointed to hear they guys reactions. Greg especially has issue of a character is not perfect; see Superman verses his opinion of RDR2.
I think the book works better because Scott's development is actually earned, alot of people see scott as this polarizing character but if you actually read the books he does get better and change
Anyone else notice that Ramona's hair colour follows the different colours of the Cornettos and in the order of the films? Red for Shaun of the Dead, Blue for Hot Fuzz and green for World's End. Edgar Wright thought of everything
Sigh, from these comments it might be best of i skip this episode. Its sounds like they missed the point of some of these characters. Pretty much no one here is a good person, except maybe , Neil and Knives.
As a 23 year old, this is hands down my favorite movie of all time. Me and my friends quote this movie all the time, and all of the casting was spot on.
I think the point of this story is that you don't need to be punching women to be a bad guy and that even if you identify as some puppy dog nerd you can can still hurt people. Part of growing up is realizing that. That definitely resonates with me because I spent a lot of my early 20s thinking I was a victim in my relationships when come to think of it, I was just as culpable, if not entirely to blame for how things went. It plays as more of a redemption story (which is much better developed in the comics but I think enough is here for it to work but that's subjective). Anyway, big ups to Kev dog who I don't believe I have ever agreed with on anything ever in the history of anything until now 👏👌♥️
I love this movie cause when I was a teenager I was a nerd in a band and the characters talked like me and my friends. It’s problematic as hell but I’ll always have a soft spot for it ❤️
I am happy to hear such a range of opinions on this movie and different aspects of it being discussed critically, but like the Lego Batman In Review I again find Greg’s disdain for a film affecting the plot synopsis. He steamrolls through plot and jokes and gives little (if any) room for people to interject or make their own points. It’s not as bad LBIR but it was another episode I found uncomfortable and tense to listen to (I generally listen to the podcast episodes). I love KF and everyone involved and in no way do I mean to offend Greg or anyone else here, just felt the need to share because it’s rare that KF content ever makes me feel anything less than joy.
Yes, thank you. Maybe it's my fault for being super excited for this episode, only to be let down by Greg just speeding through and not remembering the plot. Which then I felt like, the others wanted to make points about the movie, but since the plot was moving so fast and parts forgotten, they didn't get to interject.
I think the casting of Cera is brilliant. I hate that a lady killer needs to necessarily look like Zac Efron to be believeable. I live that Scott looks like a dork but is just so self confident that he can talk his way into getting dates with pretty girls. And I think that's somewhat of a good message to dorky looking boys. Also this movie has no flaws TIM, it's perfect. Videogames, rock n Roll and kung fu all in one movie. And that cast. Perfect.
Agree with everything but the Cera casting. I just don’t find him a good fit at all. I really want this franchise to be picked up for a season to really explore and have fun with the ex battles. If it wasn’t for the supporting cast this movie would have definitely not got its cult following.
I dunno if it still works but I remember the phone number Ramona gave Scott was real and if you called it you got Ramona's voice mail. I thought that was really cool.
As someone who liked this movie, clicked on this video for a nice 1h30 watch/listen, but only a minute in (discussion hasn't start yet) and seeing the comments & seeing what KF had an issue with... looks like KF didn't like this movie. Guess I'll watch another KF video :(
Scott is a jerk. Like you said nearly every character calls him out at some point for it. Why do you think he and Nega Scott get along? Ramona is a bit of a bitch, her words. They're not great people. There is such a thing as a protagonist that isn't heroic... The movie is a perfect adaptation when it comes to nailing the essence of the books (obviously it is compressed taking around 3 weeks vs the books' many months and they diverge in the ending since the movie came out first.) Also Zac Efron as Scott makes zero sense. Scott is an indie rock cute dorky soft guy. Efron is a good actor but this simply doesn't fit with ANYTHING we've seen him do, meanwhile it's exactly the Michael Cera shtick.
As a counterpoint to Andy's lady-killer take, I think it would've been such a cliche if Scott was played by a Zac Efron, Dave Franco, Harry Styles, etc. Because Scott is just some guy, it feels more realistic and less like a trope. I've met people who looked as harmless as Michael Cera, and were perfectly capable of both attracting and emotionally hurting others.
To me I have a theory that Ramona is just the girl of his dreams for real. That yes he does go with Ramona at the end but ends up actually working on himself. That Scott is opening more doors in his life and that this "girl" is showing him the path. Loved the video and conversation you all had can't wait for the worlds end!!
Yeah guys, Scott was never a ladykiller. He was a loser who mooched off his friends and only got in relationships for his own benefit by pure confidence. Scott is like the most average guy and that's kinda the point
I don’t get why people are saying Greg sounds like he doesn’t want to do the plot. I’ve watched every other in review and he sounds pretty standard to me. Yes in some reviews he’s super animated but it’s usually based on his energy that day or if it’s a movie he really loves, and that makes sense. He still points out moments he likes even when he’s not high energy.
He didn't remember half of it, sped through it, and said "uhhhhhhh" most of the time. While I do agree that it is comparable to his past reviews, at least in his other reviews when he loves a movie, he really gets into it.
I love how 5 adult dudes discuss for an hour how Cera isnt "dude" enough to date so many girls. Hilarious, its the adaptation of a video game, its supposed to be funny and not the realistic representation of the average persons dating life
Petition to have them redo this episode but with either Kevin or Tim do the recap, because this movie is fucking awesome that Greg’s disinterested plot recap does it so much injustice and makes it sound like its the most boring movie ever. This movie is so full of kinetic energy both in terms of dialogue and editing that if you’ve never seen this movie and just listen to this you’d think it’s just a slow sitcom-type comedy,
It’s a shame that this movie didn’t really connect with the KF crew as a whole. While I see where they’re coming from, I really love this movie. As amazing as the fantastically realised world and visuals are (some of the best ever), for me it totally nails the feeling of that in between phase of late adolescence and early adulthood where lots of us (but not all) are awkward, self interested and unintentionally cruel to others through blindly pursuing their own interests. I certainly connected with that listless, hollow, floating along feeling when you finish school, you have no idea how to be an adult or what job you’re going to do and your band is going nowhere 😂 For me, we all think we’re the hero of our own story and our actions are justified because they’re our actions. I certainly spent my early twenties feeling hard done by and not actually being the “nice” person I thought I was. Maybe it connects with me a bit more because I was (and probably still am to an extent) that slacker, burnout band dude 😂 Just a bit nicer and less of an asshole now (hopefully 🤞).
My personal ranking is probably the exact reverse of theirs. I was so flabbergasted hearing them go around the table on their thoughts on the movie. How do they not all love this movie? I don't get it.
I'm ashamed to say I didn't know this was a comic/video game before I had watched it for the first time... That being said, I saw it through the lens of a stand alone world. In that sense it's such a nicely crafted movie and world, and the cast is especially amazing looking back on it. It's a movie I can't fully recommend to most people, but I think it's for sure a fun movie to throw on once a year in the winter!
This was only my second time watching this movie, first time I saw it was years ago. I loved it so much and I'm really enjoying these directors in review. I've lived my whole life in Toronto, Canada and if I ever get the chance to direct my own feature film I'd love to set it here. With this movie and Andy's top recommendation for Nirvanna the Band the Show, Toronto needs more love in entertainment as it's proven to be it's own great character.
I don't think Scott is likeable but he's realistic in how self centered he is. I hate to say it but I've been that guy before. Especially at that age. It's realistic that he didn't become a completely different person by the end of the movie but he grew up a little bit.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Admittedly I'm biased as this came out shortly after my college gf of six years broke up with me. I also spent most of my time in college playing in bands and I love games so this movie seemed like it was made just for me when it came out. Also a few of these guys seem to miss the point of the movie. All the characters are screw-ups and imperfect and do stupid/sh*tty things because that's how people are. They are meant to be real and relatable not the cookie cutter character archetypes movies typically give us. That's exactly why the book and the movie became so popular.
i think the casting is perfect, but, i think it was a tv show or short series. but i think, or always felt that it was for sure games, indie music, and such, but i think its about being in that weird spot where someone is figuring out how to move from early 20s just living life as an "adult", being an asshole because you don't know how much that shit hurts, you live for just the next fun party on the weekend, and concerts to go to. i do think the books were way better, i wish they couldve gotten into stuff like him and Kim and that backstory, Stephen stills coming out, and the WAY bigger fight with Todd
Glad I decided to listen. Andy's song is great. And while I disagree with some assessments of the characters and the movie, I understand their explanations.
So I'd say Scott and Ramona are the "Ross and Rachel" relationship. They're not people to be, but you still side with them. Scotts an asshole who doesn't deserve the girls he hurts; and then he redeems himself. Michael Cera is the perfect casting for that. I'm finally coming back to KF after the past year of shit. Had to take a break after all the politics took over all my media. Couldn't keep doing it. But as soon as someone says a politicians name I'm out.. Thank goodness I'm about 15 minutes in and I'm loving it.
I love this movie. It's so much fun and it never gets old. I don't have an issue with the characters all being kinda shitty because I feel like that's almost the charming point of it? Like this is textbook late teens/early twenties relationship bullshit where the superficial stuff outweighs all the red flags because the idea of that person/relationship is too big of a pull. So like I'm perfectly fine with a movie being about faulty people who haven't learned shit if it's entertaining. Like is Scott and Ramona staying together? Hell no that shit ain't going to work. So I get those criticisms but I'm like meh, there are a ton of other movies that do the responsible learn your lesson typical tropes so the fact this isn't is refreshing in a way? I just love it.
I am not in lesbians with some of these people's take on this masterpiece
Andy, the point is that Cera ISN’T a ladykiller. they cast Scott that way on purpose
Ya Scott isn't a lady killer, just a lovable door that has this charming nugget inside covered up by procrastination and a general fuck up
I know it’s a personal taste but I feel like you don’t need a “likeable” character to have a good character, Scott has a good arc I feel, that being said no way Zac Efron nails the line delivery like Michael Cera, and as far as the movie goes (and all of Edgar Wright’s films) the movie just oozes style and is not lazy when it comes to the technical execution and the script
Zac Efron as Scott Pilgrim sounds absolutely terrible
glad i’m not the only one that thought this
The quality of Greg's plot recap is directly connected to how much he enjoyed the movie.
Zac Efron? Scott as a "lady killer?" What horrible takes lol
The number of times the "Scott"and "Lady killer" were said in the same sentence made me legitimately grit my teeth.

every single time i’m hyped for In Review on a film i love... Kinda Funny goes “eh it’s finel
This is my favorite movie! One thing that stands out to me is that Scott and Ramona are villains. This isn't a hero story it's a redemption story.
I'm going to use this opportunity to say that Metric is fucking awesome.
metric is beyond awesome. blasting speed the collapse now.
holy shit Zac Efron as Scott pilgrim sounds like the worst casting decision I have ever heard.

I am in lesbians with this review*

Fun fact: Michael Cera played bass on Mister Heavenly’s first tour!
You liked BvS Greg.
The movie is a perfect adaptation when it comes to nailing the essence of the books (obviously it is compressed taking around 3 weeks vs the books' many months and they diverge in the ending since the movie came out first.)
Also Zac Efron as Scott makes zero sense. Scott is an indie rock cute dorky soft guy. Efron is a good actor but this simply doesn't fit with ANYTHING we've seen him do, meanwhile it's exactly the Michael Cera shtick.
TIL that the Kinda Funny dudes don't understand the point of Scott Pilgrim lmao
As a counterpoint to Andy's lady-killer take, I think it would've been such a cliche if Scott was played by a Zac Efron, Dave Franco, Harry Styles, etc.
Because Scott is just some guy, it feels more realistic and less like a trope. I've met people who looked as harmless as Michael Cera, and were perfectly capable of both attracting and emotionally hurting others.
what song is the plot song based off of? I definitely know it but the name is escaping me and driving me crazy
I also understand what they mean with Scott not being cast very well with Michael Cera. Scott Pilgrim doesn't look like a sad turtle in the books.
If Nick thinks that’s a wig, he must think Tim is wearing a toupee 👱🏻♂️
I don’t get why people are saying Greg sounds like he doesn’t want to do the plot. I’ve watched every other in review and he sounds pretty standard to me. Yes in some reviews he’s super animated but it’s usually based on his energy that day or if it’s a movie he really loves, and that makes sense. He still points out moments he likes even when he’s not high energy.
He didn't remember half of it, sped through it, and said "uhhhhhhh" most of the time. While I do agree that it is comparable to his past reviews, at least in his other reviews when he loves a movie, he really gets into it.
Dat intro, guys. Love it
I need more time dedicated to Andy’s singing segments cause that shit is beautiful
Best plot song ever!!!!
The sheer silent rage greg exudes at 25:01
I love how 5 adult dudes discuss for an hour how Cera isnt "dude" enough to date so many girls. Hilarious, its the adaptation of a video game, its supposed to be funny and not the realistic representation of the average persons dating life
its the adaptation of a book series though
Petition to have them redo this episode but with either Kevin or Tim do the recap, because this movie is fucking awesome that Greg’s disinterested plot recap does it so much injustice and makes it sound like its the most boring movie ever. This movie is so full of kinetic energy both in terms of dialogue and editing that if you’ve never seen this movie and just listen to this you’d think it’s just a slow sitcom-type comedy,
Hands down one of the best video game/ comic book movies ever. If you don't agree you're a Ve-gone
I certainly connected with that listless, hollow, floating along feeling when you finish school, you have no idea how to be an adult or what job you’re going to do and your band is going nowhere 😂
For me, we all think we’re the hero of our own story and our actions are justified because they’re our actions. I certainly spent my early twenties feeling hard done by and not actually being the “nice” person I thought I was.
Maybe it connects with me a bit more because I was (and probably still am to an extent) that slacker, burnout band dude 😂 Just a bit nicer and less of an asshole now (hopefully 🤞).
what song was andy doing for the plot? its stuck in my head but cant tell what song it is
My personal ranking is probably the exact reverse of theirs. I was so flabbergasted hearing them go around the table on their thoughts on the movie. How do they not all love this movie? I don't get it.
Funnier than hot fuzz and shaun of the dead... That is absolute madness :O imo
Forrreeeeal
Funny that Cera isn't this believable lady killer, but he was dating the gorgeous Aubrey Plaza during filming of the movie.
Speaking of Fantastic Four when are we getting F4 in review
What the fuck guys, just..... How can you not love this? Best Edgar Wright movie hands down, that's all I'm saying.
Pizza Pizza, the Canadian Lil Caesars.... No one tell Greg we have both...
i think the casting is perfect, but, i think it was a tv show or short series. but i think, or always felt that it was for sure games, indie music, and such, but i think its about being in that weird spot where someone is figuring out how to move from early 20s just living life as an "adult", being an asshole because you don't know how much that shit hurts, you live for just the next fun party on the weekend, and concerts to go to. i do think the books were way better, i wish they couldve gotten into stuff like him and Kim and that backstory, Stephen stills coming out, and the WAY bigger fight with Todd
Glad I decided to listen. Andy's song is great. And while I disagree with some assessments of the characters and the movie, I understand their explanations.
Andy killed it with the plot intro!
Love the plot song and the entire review
Does Kevin's Marvel shirt look discolored or is the style just dirty looking?
