We have a large pontoon boat on a lake with a house. I’m ready to sell the boat as we have barely used it! My husband is a retired Naval Officer who cannot get away from being on water, driving it etc… what is Phillip’s reasoning?

If you’re supporting the channel, does that mean that they don’t have the right to pay for a vacation, their cost of living, the children’s extracurricular activities, etc.? If they bought a boat, it’s because they are fortunate to make enough to both renovate the chateau AND buy a boat. Kudos to Philip and Anna!!
My favorite episodes are when Anna makes wallpaper, color schemes and room designs are decided, and when we get a tour if various parts of the chateau.

I lived on a sailboat with my husband for over a year. Then moved off and had kids who loved learning how to sail. A very blessed time of my life. Owning a boat is expensive. Especially the upkeep. But you guys handled renovating a Chateau, so I think you can handle this. Save yourself much grief and get sailing lessons for the whole family. Remember safety first. So keep the hatch closed at all times to avoid injury. It will feel so much better when you have the main sail up, sailing close to the wind and putting the sloop on her ear. This is a great idea since you live so close to the coast. Beautiful sloop. Congratulations.
They've already had sailing lessons. I'm sure they will upskill as needed.

So sweet how you both became like teenage lovers at the start of a big adventure. It’s beautiful to see the burst of youthful energy this boat project has bought to your relationship.
Buying a yacht is merely the beginning of a great and very costly adventure. Oh my, I recall mooring fees, slipping fees, electrolysis issues, painting, varnishing, motor issues, bilge pump issues, sail issues, mould issues, so very much hard work, ….. and so much beauty. 🇦🇺

What a beauty little boat!!. Congratulations! When I was in 9th grade, 13/14, in St. Thomas, USVI, we lived on a boat, The Noah's Ark, and my sister and I had bunks in the bow in the foc'sle. I was lucky enough to have the bottom bunk and slept just below the waterline. So I fell asleep and woke up to the sound of gentle waves slapping against the hull, Lying in bed, I could look up thru the open hatch and see the stars rocking back and forth in the sky. Sometimes the moon would shine right down the ladder and wiggle a puddle of white light back and forth across the floor. Every morning, there was a dirty old greasy pelican who came and sat on top of the foc'sle hatch to eat the fish in its beak pouch, wiggling furiously, still alive. Then the pelican would cough it up, tossing it into the air and catching it and happily munch, occasionally dropping fresh pieces of fish down the ladder and onto me!! I would scream and get so mad and whack at it with my pillow! I'll never forget looking up at the pelican! Every morning, without fail! It was fun! I wish such wonderful memories for your girls, too. All four of us took the dingy into the West India dock where we tied up and hiked up the hill to Antilles School, which still exists! So much fun. So many great memories. Two boys, two girls, a cat, a dog, a parakeet and parents! My dad built a cat box off the stern with a slot in the back of the floor and we just pushed the kitty poops thru it! A baracuda who lived under the stern, named Gil Evans after the jazz great, ate the kitty poops and got very big, long, and quite fat, but my mom fed it all the dinner scraps as well. It was the happiest baracuda you ever saw and never hurt us when we went diving and swimming off the boat. If we were naughty, we were pushed overboard and no mercy was given! My mother was a pirate wench! And my father? Har! Har! Har!

Congratulations. I love sailing. My father lived on a sail boat for over 10 yrs. I have so many fond memories with him out on the water. If I could get my son to sleep as a baby he would have me bring him down to the boat and it would rock him starlight to sleep. My sons called him Grandpa Hook.

Oh how exciting! My dad had a sailboat many years ago that we used to sail on the Hudson River in NY state. Lots of great memories. There is something so special about being out on the river that has stayed with me for all these years. My dad passed away many years ago, and I never bought a boat, but I do enjoy walking down by the beautiful Hudson River and watching the sailboats majestically glide by. Its wonderful to see families out there enjoying the beautiful scenery along this magnificent waterway.
And sometimes you get to see an airplane land. Lol
Get certified through a sailing association. The sea is beautiful but dangerous.

"Sporty" sailing makes me smile. That's a whole other thing. A whole separate set of sails. Maybe the girls will become racing sailers. It's all good fun either way. I big comfortable boat for family is the perfect way to start. I made sails for the America's Cup. Hope you have a great set with a spinnaker. Enjoy !

Congratulations! My parents did something like this 60 years ago; they sold everything they owned, packed the necessities including my little brother and I (we were 5 & 7,) and headed from Los Angeles to Stockholm, where we completed purchase of our sloop and then to dry dock in Tomrafjord, Norway. It was a spectacular childhood. I'm sure your girls will thoroughly enjoy their adventures with you two.
The music selection in this video was wonderful. It's always so perfect, but something about this video's music during the Stockholm walk-about in particular made me smile.

I love boating, we used to have a cruiser boat, it’s our cabin on the water during summer. It was very convenient during COVID too, but we decided to sale in 2022. Hard to maintain, as if you have a second house. Enjoy your boat and good luck to you both.

Hi Philip and Anna, I am not sure if you had life jackets on under your jackets. However, I just wanted to caution you. Please wear life jackets at all times whenever you are on the boat. The water can be very unpredictable and things can go wrong very fast. It's always best that you wear a life jacket at all times.
We just received them the day after the sea trials :)
@HowToRenovateAChateau Perfect. Always wear life jackets at all times. I am happy that you received them. I know someone who got caught in an ebb tide on a family beach trip. She drowned, trying to save her teenage daughter. Even experienced swimmers have to know what to do to get out of an ebb tide. A life jacket would have saved her.

Boats are money pits. If you are going to bring it back with you and use it a lot and get your money’s worth out of it that’s fine but unless you live on the water they sit most of the time and cost money to store and maintain. Good luck!
