- THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP - Heartbreaking Tragedy Of Norm Abram From "THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP"
How do you feel when you pour your heart and soul into crafting a piece of furniture for your own home? That sense of accomplishment and pride is what carpenter Norm Abram has inspired in countless individuals through his iconic shows "The New Yankee Workshop" and "This Old House." But where is the man behind these beloved series? In this video, we will delve into Norm Abram's extraordinary journey, his impact on the world of woodworking, and the tragedy surrounding his life now. Stay tuned.
As a Canadian, I can say that Norm's influence reached far beyond the U.S. borders. I have been a fan of Norm, T.O.H., and the New Yankee Workshop for decades and have learned much of what I know from him. I miss his work, his ability to teach, and wish him and his family the best.
Dude had more jigs than an Irish wedding. Loved watching a master work.
I'm a master furniture maker today thanks to THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP, I knew nothing about cabinet making or furniture making before watching THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP. I'd even bought the same delta table saw, wood lathe, surface planer, router and router/shaper that Norm had on the show. And 34 years later, they all still work, perfectly.
As a teenaged girl....I used to love watching THIS OLD HOUSE on PBS channel 11 in Chicago, IL. Then when Norm got his own show with NYWS.....I was definitely hooked!!! I loved the way he took the time to explain every piece of equipment and its purpose.....and he always stressed SAFETY FIRST.... and....a clean workshop is a productive workshop. I love that the show offered blue prints of every piece he made so you can make it yourself....This was true DIY.....I really miss him but glad I can find the shows on UA-cam!!!
Loved Norm for years! Wish him all the best.
As a DIYer, I loved watching Norm's shows from This Old House to the New Yankee Workshop. Norm was definitely one of those people who influenced me to tackle home projects and woodworking years ago and which I still love today.
Loved the Yankee Workshop. Missed him on this old house but enjoyed watching him on his own show. Learned something new every week.
He was lucky to have a great teacher. It was new yankee workshop that got me into woodworking. I'm retired, and I spend my time in the garage woodworking, and from time to time, I go back and watch his old shows. Thanks, Norm, for the shows!
We all love and miss you Norm. The woodwork you did looked so simple to do. At least that is what I thought but, there was a mass of education and experience behind Norm to do what he does with ease. A true artist at work!
I am a 77yo engineer and homesteader. Norm has influenced my life in a big way from the early days of 'This old house' mostly the 'New Yankee Workshop'. I built furniture and buildings based on his inspiration. Hard to say how much I appreciate what Norm has contributed to my life.
Norm was the true star of this old house. Such a easy-going kinda guy and a great teacher and talented carpenter.
Been watching Norm for years. He is full of knowledge, and when he is finished with a project, it is perfect. Thank you, Norm. We wish you and yours the very best.
I'm hoping Norm is just slowing down to enjoy his twilight years and with a new partner Elise. All the best Norm & Elise where ever you are !
Thankyou for passing on your knowledge & skills to the next generations!
🤗♥️
I miss this man and his work so much.
I’ve watched Norm since the beginning( and his PBS gang)! I appreciate all his advice and knowledge. ❤❤❤
I remember watching 'This Old House' faithfully every Sunday on PBS, and then 'The Yankee Workshop'. That was when I was living in the US.
Norm was one of the people who got me interested in architecture. I eventually got a drafting job for the State of California and later retired with a pension. I now can do my painting and sculpture to my hearts content. Thank You Norm.
I loved him since i was a young girl!❤ such a cozy show. Started my love of historic homes!!❤
I’m still inspired by the lessons taught me , I truly want to say Thank You Norm thank you
We met Norm many many years ago, He is a very nice man. My husband had his picture taken with Norm. He is a huge fan.
Norm inspired me to build my own house.
With only one failed class in woodworking I’ve built a 5500 sq ft three story double timber frame. Black walnut timbers on the outside separated by SIPs and white oak timbers on the inside.
Thank you Norm.
I have alot of great memories of watching The New Yankee Workshop every Saturday with my dad. I miss those day and I thank you Norm Abrams for all the fine memories. It started my love of woodworking. Thanks Norm. ❤
I loved his show.
I use to follow Norm in the 90's on PBS. I wish him well....
Years of watching. Greatly appreciated.
Enjoyed This Old House. Seeing the progress with
Bob Vila and Norm Abram.
loved Norm since his beginnings on channel 2, privileged to meet him briefly at Home Depot a few years ago!
A true craftsman. Loved the N.Y.W. Norm was a great teacher for his trade. Hope you have the best of health in retirement. Jerry D. From Western Massachusetts.
I always knew that I wanted to work with wood and to progress to furniture, but it was Norm in the late 1980s who showed me how to get started, what tools to accumulate, and to follow Norm's instructions. Its been a very long, great ride since . . . .
I lived watching This Olde House right from the beginnings with Bob Villa and all the future shiws and spinoffs. New Yankee Workshop is one of my all time favorites. I learned a lot from Norm Abram.. I also love Tommy Silva who is another unique master carpenter/builder.
Watching him while growing up in Massachusetts I always thought Norm’s shows were only shown locally. As a kid I used to wish he’d come to my house because my dad never finished his home
Improvement projects.
I was always impressed with Norm's lessons and presentations. Good job.
Norm IS the man..and his skill set IS what every person wishes for as a woodworker..YOU DA MAN NORM..

Love a man who plays the mandolin.
Norm Abram is a master woodworker in all aspects of the field. Norm has inspired me to be able to build anything I have ever decided to try and tackle.
Norm is a really talented person. God bless Norm .
Of my god, I just did a puzzle with this house in the picture. I had a ball making this puzzle from White Mountain. The background was like it was sea coast home.
I can thank Norm Abram for introducing me to Porter Cable tools.
Watched him for years. I hope I have learned things
Loved watching Norm ...I have always liked woodwork but never had the money time to learn after school now in my mind 60s I think it's too late 😅
Norm is the GOAT 🐐
He inspired my brother in law to start doing carpentry
My father was a journeyman cabinet maker. My career in woodworking began when i was four. My dad was handsawing and the line he had drawn kept disappearing in sawdust. I was just tall enough to slightly look down at the work surface as he sawed. I leaned a little closer and poof!, blew the dust away with each stroke. I was immediately hired... as slave labor until i was 16. My dad insulted me in front of a neighbor i respected. The neighbor was admiring a rabbit hutch i had built all by myself. My dad raised rabbits, rather, i raised the rabbits he bought. He told the neighbor, "Yeah, she does good work, but she's like a mule. You have to hit her in the head with a shovel first. I was infuriated and refused to ever work with him again. I stormed off and he was embarrassed in front of the neighbor. Fair is fair. End of slave labor.
OMG. How tragic. 😢
Norm was what got me into construction but i go for roy underwood after for the cool stuff.
i loved watching this guy, also bob ross
Norm is THE GOAT
Great Classics 😅🎉😂❤
Norm!
Without going over budget-- they do things the most expensive.
God speed Norm 🙏
Elise is wonderful
RIP
What about the guy who did woodwork without modern tools?
Roy Underhill
It's such a tragedy. It's hard to talk about it.
Behind every successful man is a woman, rolling her eyes.
Norm if you see this message. Know that forgiveness will melt cancer. I am forgiven, I forgive others, I release the need to be unforgiving.
Thanks to Biden/Kamala's inflation I can no longer afford to buy wood. Sorry kids.
I enjoyed Norm's shows on woodworking.
I've also loved TOH and NYWORKSHOP.
I know nothing about woodworking but liked watching NORM.
Anybody named Norm is the man.
Is Norm dead?
