Ibn Taymiyya: A Summary of Dr. Yasir Qadhi's dissertation at Yale University

  • In the latter part of the sixth century of Islam, an Iranian Scholar by the name of Fakhr ad-Dīn ar-Rāzī (rahimahullah) produced a hundred page treatise on the theological discourse of the Names of Attributes of Allāh (subḥānahu wa ta'āla). His treatise was presented to a Sultan who was related to Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn al-Ayyūbi (rahimahullah). In it, he propounded something he called 'The Universal Rule', which stated that if reason conflicted with revelation, precedence must be given to reason over revelation.
Some two centuries later, one of the greatest thinkers of Islamic history, hailing from the city of Damascus, produced a ten-volume magnum opus refuting this alleged 'Universal Rule'. The name of this man was Shaykh al-Islām Taqī'l-Dīn Ahmad b. Abd al-Haleem Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah), a genius whose intellectual brilliance is hardly seen during or after his era.
Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi, who regards Shaykh'l-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) as an intellectual mentor, spent eight years examining the above-mentioned work, and presented it as his PhD dissertation at Yale University. In his work, Ibn Taymiyya argues that there can never be an actual conflict between true reason and explicit revelation.
Join Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi in this very interesting and academic talk on a summary of his dissertation at Yale University.

Thank you for this fine presentation.
I studied Islam and ME history for quite a few decades when I was still Christian. Even then, I could see the power of ibn Tayymiyyah's mind. He clearly had a first rate mind--I believed that even though I wasn't Muslim and disagreed with Islam. As a recent revert to Islam, I'm even more impressed with Tayymiyyah's insight and realize even more how important he is. If we don't study this man's work, we are missing one of the powerful figures in Islamic intellectual history.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the Aqeedah of Salaf us Salih and Khalaf may Allah be pleased with them all, and then you wonder why he was persecuted and put in jail multiple times by prominent Sunni scholars.
"There is nothing in the book of Sunnah, nor in
the statements of the Salaf, or Imams of the
nation that He (Allah) is not a body and His features are not a body"

God is also a beardless, curly haired, young man who rides on a mosquito:
"We conclude that it was eyesight as it is in the Sahih narration from Qutada from Ikrama
from Ibn Abbas who narrated that the Prophet said:'I saw my God in an image of a beardless (young man), with long curly hair in a green garden."

Ibn Taimiyah cited this text from Sheikh al-Daremi and he wrote that he believed in it.
Interestingly, there is a similar belief in Judaism, because they believe God rides on an angel. We read in the The Old Testament,
Book of Samuel, 22:11 (King James
      version):
"And he rode upon acherub, and did fly.: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind."
Enough about your gods attributes, let's see what ways of transportation he uses to get to his intended destination:
"Allah is able to relocate from here to there through rope"

some of these comments are truly saddening. if any of you feel like ibn taymiaah (r) is wrong about something, it is okay. however, it is not okay to insult him ( dead man ) or his many followers. after all we can differ in opinions, and opinions can change with experiences. to comment " ibn taymiyyah is a kafir " or " stupid " without reading any of his work, is merely ignorance. love each other for gods sakes, we are limited beings.

Subhan Allah, Shaykh ul Islam ibn Taymiyya (r) was truly the epitome of what a Scholar should be ...and a mind like his is really what is needed in our times!
The greatest battles are the battles of the intellect, only the feeble mind resort to derogatory and vulgar language or worse, physical harm when critiquing their opponent who belongs to a different group or sect.
Shaykh ul Islam ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) is the perfect example of an intellectual brilliance and personality that was way ahead of his time and his works are just mind blowing, only if people understood the genius of his writings - may Allah have Mercy on him and bless us to walk his footsteps for the betterment of the Ummah, Allahumma ameen.

Sorry to say that this guy is a Dhajjal not just misleading the Muslims but also the entire Americans and others.
The time of general public is precious and there are plenty of things they have to know. This kind of philosophical matters should be limited to be discussed among scholars or specialized study purpose the way he did for his Doctorate.
The mere fact that this guy is discussing all these difficult matters with general public is the proof the this guy does not have proper idea of Quran eventually Islam.
Ibn Thaymiah and F Razi discussed issues related to their time which should be analized in their context but not in the modern time. What we need is to analyze the scriptures (Quran and Hadeeth) according to the modern time and its challenges; and find out practical mechanisms which suite the modern time.
Please convey this message to this guy and let him stop spreading falsehood otherwise they won’t be no option than targeting further.

@@hasanbilgrami5735 If Kalam theologans will reinterpret this verse about estewaa (being above the throne) because the act of being above a throne is human-like then they have to deny and reinterpret the hundreds of verses that describe Allah as seeing, hearing and speaking for these are indeed human-like as well. Of course Kalam and Ashari theologans will respond that the divine attributes of seeing, hearing, and speaking are in a modality كيفية that is befitting his Majesty and glory compared to those of man.
Ibn Taymeyyah and the Salaf before him demand that the same principle should be applied to the attribute of estewaa (being above the throne) as well. i.e God's estewaa above his throne is of a modality that is befitting to his Majesty and unlike that of man. It's the same principles when it comes to all Allah's attributes. We don't cherry pick based on our whims.
Ibn Taymeyyah and the salaf's position is very clear and straightforward when it comes to divine attributes: we should describe Allah only with the terms that He or His prophet used to describe Him and negate what Allah and his prophet negated.
That's why Ibn Taymeyyah refused to affirm or deny corporialism as it wasn't affirmed or denied by Allah or his prophet, so we don't go there and we don't speak about God without knowledge. We do not reinterpret what we simply don't like with our reasoning because human reasoning is limited to what we experienced in this earthly life where nothing is like God.

There is only one clear verdict on this from Allah's Kalaam: Refer to Aayah 7 of Surah Aal e Imran: 03:07:= "It is He Who has revealed the Book to you. Some of its verses are absolutely clear and lucid, and these are the core of the Book. Others are ambiguous. Those in whose hearts there is perversity, always go about the part which is ambiguous, seeking mischief and seeking to arrive at its meaning arbitrarily, although none knows their true meaning except Allah. On the contrary, those firmly rooted in knowledge say: 'We believe in it; it is all from our Lord alone.' No one derives true admonition from anything except the men of understanding."

Aqidah is not hard - it is the explanation of aqidah ('ilm al kalam / theology) which is hard and cannot simply be dismissed. Most believers simply accept the aqidah for what it is at face value and do not need to go further. But other people are so constituted that their intellect forces them to search into these matters - theoogy is a medicine for them, and also a shield and sword against heretics and non-believers.

Jazak Allah Khair Shaikh, for everything you do, and I would like to request from you to addres an issue that is spreading a lot, which is "disrespect and disregarding scholars"
I've Lived in many places around the world for long times, not just visiting and one of the big issues that I'm seeing, is many professionals that are muslims disregard scholars
many saying the disaster of our Ummah is from the scholars
others make jokes on some fatwas or mistakes ....etc. from current and past scholars (even the Ulamma of the sahaba, and the 4 imams of the mathahib)
and many started making up fatwas that they think it's right and fits their brains (or desire) or from reading 10 or 20 random islamic books from here and there
I know the scholars can make mistakes, and yes using our brain to know what is wright from what is wrong from what is said ..... but disrespecting and talking badly about past and current scholars is not the way of our deen.
please can you focus a bit on this .... jazak Allah khair

I'm not ashari sufi deobandi shia rafodhi etc, but what ibn taymiyyah wrote about Allah Almighty I strongly disagree with and so should everyone else.
"There is nothing in the book of Sunnah, nor in
the statements of the Salaf, or Imams of the
nation that He (Allah) is not a body and His features are not a body"
Source: Bayan Talbis al-Jahamia, Volume 1, Page 101.

If He (God) wants, He can sit on a mosquito's back.
Source: Bayan Talbis al-Jahamia by ibn Taymiyya, Volume 1, Page 568.

So much venom here below against Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahu'llah), it could make one sick! Truly the devil has beautified your actions in your own eyes.
Does God Almighty have a face? Yes, that's what HE says in the Qur'an.
Does He have two hands? Yes, that's what HE says in the Qur'an.
Can we ever imagine or understand what's meant by those words? Never! Not in this life.
So who gave YOU the right to negate those attributes or to interpret them as per YOUR own whims and intellectual taste?
This is NOT tajseem/anthropomorphism! It is simply an affirmation of God's own words WITHOUT any interpretation whatsoever.
May Allah guide those who genuinely seek His guidance.

      Mohammed Hanif
Dear Brother, if you're asking for an Aya that says something like: "I have a face" per se or "I have hands" per se, then you obviously won't find such ayat.
However, if you're asking for a literal reference to Allah's hands and face in the Qur'an, then please read below.
Reference to Allah's two hands in Aya 75 of Surat Sad:
قال يا إبليس ما منعك أن تسجد لما خلقت بيدي أستكبرت أم كنت من العالين
Here Allah (SWT) says: "I've created with my (own) two hands".
Reference to Allah's face in Aya 27 of Surat Ar-Rahman:
ويبقى وجه ربك ذو الجلال والإكرام

      Fadi Al-Mufti dear brother,
Then when you wrote earlier: "yes that is what He says in the Quran" in reference to face and hands, you were making ta'weel and not taking these verses literally? You were.actually interpreting those verses despite saying you weren't.
The strict non-interpretive understanding of those 2 verses would be
      1. God created with two Hands
      2. The Face of our Rabb will remain
without saying He has two Hands or a Face or what these refer two.
My problen is that you seem to condemn some Muslims for interpreting these verses but you do so as well.

The Problem which Muslim Ummah is facing today is that they dont respect if somebody disagrees with them , I m Shia Muslim , I myself read some of his work like Sharh Aqidatul Wastiya, I completely disagree with Ibn Taymiyyah thoughts , not only with him I also disagree with some thoughts of Shia Muslim scholar - Allamah Majlisi on Usool , but giving intellectual respect to some scholar is must , this is the same trend which i see when there is video about Imam Khomeini , instead of looking at his books like 40 Hadith , Discipline of Prayer etc , some people Misquote his book on some theological and Jurisprudential issue , i just said these words here becoz i saw comments below this Lecture in which ppl were sending somebody to Jannah and somebody to Hell , this attitude will make Islam a mockery ,which to some extent has happened , also followers of Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah should also know to respect other scholars whether he is Sufi like Ibn Arabi or Barelvi or Shia so that despite our strong differences with ibn Taymiyyah still we respect his beliefs and rational thoughts , Inshallah the differences in this Ummah will flourish and enrich the Islamic Civilisation based on the principle of Tawheed and Universal Brotherhood

One argument I did not hear the sheikh address...And that is, unlike mutazila, philosipha, etc. who were changing core meanings, taking metaphorical understandings of certain texts, like gods names, does not change the core meaning of the islam. The same message is taken away from either approach. Big difference in that and mutazila isnt it?
For example, Asharis say God cannot be on a throne, for it would assume, God is limited to time and space, therefore, it must be metaphorical. Asharis say, no God says he is on a throne, but it is unlike any throne we can comprehend. So essentially its really just a meaningless statement with no value, as they have no idea what the throne means. Therefore, the throne becomes metaphorical for them as well...What's the difference? Seems like semantics. At least with the Asharis, we can attempt to understand the text. The Atharis have no take away from the message.
Secondly, I wish he would address the role of metaphor in text. Does Ibn Tamiyah deny the existence of that? If so, that is strange, as metaphor is used all the time in language in Arabic poetry is it not? And is he does agree on the use of metaphor, where and when is it used in the texts and how do we know when to use it?
Thirdly, I wish he would have addressed the downside to literal interpretation of text. Namely its tendency to promote extremism and intolerance. Some text clearly contradict other text, without metaphorical understandings of some, how do you make sense of it all and reconcile it all together? Seems like you cant, and rather just ignore certain texts.

How did Ibn Taymiyyah reconcile the fact that on one hand he discredits aql as being subject to the individual(subjective) and time(culture, surroundings etc.), and on the other hand he appeals to it to accept his arguments? If it's invalid to begin with, then surely accepting his arguments is just as prone to be wrong.
I find it fascinating that a lot of what he described against the rationalists(that they use difficult words and do the emperor-has-no-clothes thing) is happening now with the salafi atharis who do the exact same thing, but argue what he argued.

the part where he says "a daleel is not based on whether it is aql or naql but by the yaqeen reached by the aqil or naql due to the daleel's own merit" is a farce. It's word play. We know from the Imams of the salaf that one Imams daleel had no merit in the usul of another Imam. The debate has always been what is considered merit to whom. It's a fancy way of stating an obvious age-old fact the beginning seeker of knowledge even knows. It's just his way of saying "I already know I'm right and here's where I tell why i think so"
