      Heresy. We all demand a 3 hour dissertation on a mech from the brand of gauss rifle used to the number of seat cushions sucked up a pilots ass from inbound gauss fire.

    My Command DW is named " Death blow" it carries 4 flamers and 4 lbx10s, it's a head hunter.
    The others are a mix of energy and dakka. My secondary is dubbed "Warpaint", sporting 2 large pulse and 2 lbx 20s. She strips them to the bone then roasts em.

    The A config is great. The gauss provides range and headcapping. The LPL trio gives you reliability at range, and solid punch. The SRMs can critseek. The AMS is a nice boost to defense. And it can fire everything while running, and remain at room temperature.

    I just realized that a Trial of Possession (in this case) is just the clan version of enforcing patent law.
    That aside, I'm suddenly curious how many atlases/atlas IIs it would take to fight this thing in open combat?

    • @Lug4sG
      @Lug4sG  2 роки тому +4

      Good Question. 1v1 the Atlas is out matched. You also have to consider the size of the forces, A standard Inner sphere lance has 4 Mechs when a clan star has 5. Assuming both sides use the same number of atlas vs Dire wolf. It would be down to the terren, and the skill of the mechwarrior. All in all I would say the Dire Wolf would win outright in a fair fight. And could prob take on two atlas, so it would be close.

    • @Finwolven
      @Finwolven 2 роки тому +1

      @@Lug4sG This is why you don't balance IS vs. Clan matches according to tonnage (Clan has silly advantage) nor on C-Bill value (IS fields entire lances per single Clan mech). DV2 has its' problems, but this is something it tends to solve... Reasonably well.

    • @fix0the0spade
      @fix0the0spade 2 роки тому +3

      That depends greatly on the era and the fluff. In 3050 two lances of AS7-Ds could take on one of these monsters and it would be an unfair fight, for the Atlases. Clan AC/5s and ER Large Lasers outrange IS weapons to the point it could just stand there and pick each Atlas off while they walked towards it. There would be no Atlas IIs available, the clans possessed literally all of them, not even Comstar had any. By 3065 (FeCom war) a good Dire Wolf pilot could expect a 2-1 kill ratio since Clan Tech proliferated and Comstar were selling nearly as good SLDF tech to anyone who could pay. Atlas IIs wouldn't be available to Inner Sphere forces until well into the 3070s, but an Atlas II can fight a Dire Wolf 1 to 1. The Dire Wolf has more firepower, the Atlas II better heat management, once can punch harder, the other other can punch more often, it's a really good match up.

    I sometimes feel like my mind can't fathom just how deadly a single Dire Wolf is, just like I can't quite imagine how 10.000 is a bigger number than 100.000.
    But this method helps:
    A civilian is not deadly.
    An armed militant is somewhat dangerous and can defend himself.
    A professional soldier is very much capable of killing.
    A noble's elite bodyguard will kill you three times before you hit the floor.
    A clan elemental warrior could rip you in half even without a suit of battlearmour.
    Even a workplace related accident could turn you into a boneless red pulp when dealing with industrial mechs.
    Get violent in a riot and a piggy piloting a security mech will surely vaporise every molecule in your body with a pulse laser.
    And now onto actual war assets:
    Any combat vehicle will kill you easily at extreme distances without giving you a chance to retaliate or escape.
    A light mech equipped with a single flamer would be enough to roast you and your entire platoon in just seconds.
    A clan mech would do the same, just even faster.
    A medium mech already has the potential to be the king of a battlefield, able to mount a heavy loadout while remaining fast and tough. Rest assured it'll at least have one machine gun.
    Clan omnies are just plain better and are also unpredictable in their configuration.
    If you see a heavy, that means things are serious, and you are seriously dead.
    And if it's a clan heavy, at least you'll get to see a classic and iconic design through your binos before you mega-die a fraction of a second later.
    Now, if you see an assault mech, you'll die so hard, just the amount of dirt the crater will throw into the sky after you explode would be enough to kill you five times over.
    If it's a clan battletech, like a Kodiak, after a couple years, you'd probably be able to fish in the crater left after your demise.
    AND HERE WE ARE. The deadliest ground unit posible. A finely crafted, highly customisable, 100t god of war. An obedient beast of extremely refined materials, powered by a caged star, and commanded by the absolute most terrible and compatible of warriors the galaxy has to offer.
    The Dire Wolf truly is at another level; it truly is death.

      I remember original Mechwarrior in 89, I got it used around 91-92. As an 8 year old fledgling gamer I loved it at first, the tutorial mission and 1 or 2 of the first easy missions, but it was a bit too immersive for my smooth 8 year old brain and my lack of understanding about the importance of heat sinks made me abandon it in frustration.
      But here I am 29 years later, remembering the Timberwolf and Direwolf with great nostalgia...

    Nice narration on your fiction even though it does not fit lore at all. It is very unlikely that Clan Wolf would surprise attack a backwater world and even deploy a Direwolf there, it would have been bid away and the garrison would have received a batchall unless they were pirates or merceneries. Also 54 km/h is not it's cruising speed it is it's top speed while the M1's cruising speed on the battlefield is 40 km/h and the top speed around 70 km/h.
    The Direwolf is also very ill suited for stealth missions or raids, simply because it is to big, slow and heavy.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I have left alot open to interpretation.
      Although I didn’t say it was a surprise attack or a stealth mission. Nore did I mention a batchall. It could have been issued ignored or denied. Or even not understood. I was focusing on the initial assault. As for being a back water world it could be a periphery world on the way to the inner sphere.

Well i seem to recall having 50kts across the deck sailing east. Speeds are one thing that always kinda killed me in sci fi IP. I think the writers just do not scale very well. Star Wars “snub fighters” for example. Most could be outrun and outmaneuvered by fighter craft from the 60s. That and as much as I love battletech and get the need for game balancing real world cannons very differently from ACs. A real world 40mm (AC2) has about a two mile effective range. By the time your up to 155mm and such your well beyond visual range. I get it though, its balancing. Besides stompy murder robots loose much of the appeal when they frag each other BVR. To answer the obviously hyperbolic question at the end, you send a lance because a single mech is easily swamped by asshole infantry with Inferno missiles and mines. Always, -always- have backup. The Clanners found out the hard way that their mechs, while individually superior, simply do not work when engaged in militarily sensible fashion. A single Timberwolf versus 17 Urbanmechs? I know who my money is on.

    • @Michael-cf9cj

      Depending on terrain it could go either way. If the Timberwolf can break contact enough to get to more open terrain, it can shred the Urbanmechs from beyond their range and maintain distance indefinitely. If it's forced to fight within the range of the UrbanMechs, the overwhelming firepower of that many AC-10s would burn the Timberwolf down.
