      Thanks for watching! What myths?

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 4 роки тому +5

      @@tsitsu8345 The biggest one is that fry grow slower in the presence of adult fish due to an imaginary hormone that they apparently release. This video shows that fry grow at roughly equal rates with or without adults present. Another one that it kills is that fry can't be grown in breeder boxes. The fry grow at the same rate just as with the last myth, although I still personally wouldn't use one past about one week of age.

    • @tsitsu8345
      @tsitsu8345  4 роки тому +2

      @@cryoraptora303tm2 About that hormone I’ve heard it a little differently. Not adult fish but bigger and stronger fry release it to get rid of competition from their weaker siblings. That’s why you should do big and frequent water changes in a fry tank - to wash away the hormone.
      I don’t know if it’s true, but I do daily 50-60% water changes anyway (twice a day for a tank with no live plants) and my molly and swordtail fry grow at the same rate.
      The breeder box gives you an advantage: the fry don’t have to tire themselves out searching for food, they get it right in front of their noses. But now I have stopped using a breeder box, I put fry in a small aquarium right away.

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 4 роки тому +1

      @@tsitsu8345 The way I've seen it is 'adults release hormones to stop fry from growing', but I see how that can be construed as well. The logical question I ask is why would it ever do that? Surely releasing an inhibiting hormone into the water will result in slower growth for the emitter as well?
      I've raised both guppy and cory fry and I definitely see some fry grow much faster than others. I think it's more like a chain reaction of the bigger fry being able to get more food, resulting in even faster growth and vice versa for the smaller fry.
      I'm about to start a selective breeding project in a 15 gallon, and I plan on removing the parents to my community 37 gallon once they give birth. I'm hoping that the large volume for the fry, combined with regular feeding and water changes that I plan to do, will result in fast growth.

    • @tsitsu8345
      @tsitsu8345  4 роки тому +1

      @@cryoraptora303tm2 There is not enough research about the hormone to say smth for sure. It doesn’t make sense for adult fish to release it after they’ve invested so much effort in reproduction.

      It's not about brood size; it's about the time it takes to raise them. Most fish produce hundreds or thousands of fry per spawn. Mollies can take several months to reach sale size. They have to be fed a lot and their water has to be kept clean and sometimes medicated. Then they have to be shipped to the store and either the supplier or the store has to make up for any that die in shipping. If you want to save money, buy a pregnant female and raise the fry yourself, then sell any you don't want back to the store.

    I found a molly fry in my tank yesterday morning. I have moved it to a breeder net but I have no idea how old it is. Should I just leave it in the net breeder until it is larger than an adult molly's mouth?
