- In this video you will see railroad crossing gates that have gone wild, they don't know if they want to go down or up! The CSX crew does come and fix them as you will see. Also we have a Canadian Pacific double stack train, a couple of CSX freight trains, a big BNSF oil train and much more!

Those aliens from Close Encounters are playing with railroad signals again.
Look for a short on the tracks. I saw one go bonkers when a track gang had inadvertently laid a metal bucket across the tracks, thereby shorting the gate.
They fixed it if you watch the whole video
That was near Jackson, GA at the time and that gate would go down and then come back up over and over till guy on a high rail truck found the problem. There were 6 trains backed up because of this faux pas.
A shunt on the track will cause the gates to drop further. It kills the voltage on the rail which tells the crossing programming that somethings there all of a sudden. So the crossing reacts. As long as it’s not in the island, it will recover. But every time it sees the shunt. Come and go, it will drop and recover. As for this particular crossing, the fact that it’s ratcheting, it’s a problem in the contact or hold clear. It’s all adjustment. It happens with wear and tear, useage, dirt, corrosion, etc
Looks to be an issue with the hold clear (or whatever it's called) in the gate mech. Must've been adjusted a bit wrong, though they may want to double-check the adjustments, since it appears the gate lights now hit that NEG e-bell (which appears to be a bit loose!).

The hold clear has absolutely nothing to do with the lights hitting

That first crossing gate is what happens when the park pawl for the motor gear fails and won’t hold the gate up, the motor then forces the gate up to bring it to the stop position, and shuts it off when it reaches the “park” position, but then the gate continues and then bounces back and begins to fall again, then the motor kicks back in to bring it to park. And the cycle continues non stop
When a gate is doing this, it is with the cam contacts in the power box. The signal maintainer will replace the relay contacts. The relay contact that senses gate position will be red hot!!!!
Well looks like that crossing needs to calm down a bit, this is kind of amusing, I'm easily amused. 🤣 maybe a marching army of battle droids or some kind of me suit? Intresting catch.

To me, the gate is hitting the up limit switch but the brake is not holding the gate in the full up position. When the gate falls, it comes off the up limit and the controller tries to open it again.

The classic fast pump. the lock mechanism breaks and it just unlocks itself as fast as it basically locks itself in shaking the whole signal because that gate mechanism is very very heavy.
lot of times depending on how long the gate pumping's been going on and if it's in fast pump you also have to be very careful at the mounting bolts at the bottom and double check them before you leave after repairing the gate pump issue because it could literally loosen the signal itself to where it could topple down and crash to the street.
It can also cause the bell to be shaken loose as well, as can be seen in the video.

Did you call the rail company about the 7 track gate problem? Those wide RoWs look like they may have had four or more rail lines running down them. Good locations.

i remember in 1 of your videos that you called the emergency number on the blue box due to a malfunction of the gates. an old fashioned (by some) agitator washing machine(which I have) never know what will happen at "7 Tracks"

20:26 i swear I've seen 4041 alone pulling an empty wellcar train a few months ago... how odd you mention empty intermodals and then seeing 4041? what a coincidence. I think he got a different horn.. the old horn was a good sounding one.

Definitely gate mechanism issue and sounds like lots of loose stuff inside as if it's loaded with horses

I would and have called the number on the equipment to report any malfunctions. I'm sure they do appreciate any one that helps out. Perhaps you did?
Whenever I've lived close enough to railroad crossings to see stuff like that happen, I always called the number on the gate or control shed.
The dispatchers have always been thankful.

Have you ever caught on video, a defect detector finding an issue with a train and what happened afterwards? (Say like a "hot box")
XENONPLASMA you won’t hear any defects unless you’re on the channel for the sub division. It’s all transmitted by radio to the trains and dispatcher. Once it sees a defect it announces what approximate axle from the head of the train and the conductor has to walk the train

I saw malfunctioning gate crossings happen on the Norfolk Southern line in my town while waiting for a bus. When they would just go down and open in a few seconds later without a train coming through. I even reported to NSCorp and they asked for a certain gate crossing number but I said exact town and street name it's at because I was waiting for a local bus. Would of missed the bus if I stepped down to get a closer look. I am along a line of the famous former Reading railroad that went from Philadelphia to Reading via Norristown & Pottstown. Tracks for NS continue to Harrisburg and eventually Pittsburgh Via Altoona's World Famous Horseshoe Curve.

that's one thing signal maintainers have to do when it goes into a fast gate pump mode like that.
you also have to check the secure mounting bolts down by the concrete base and make sure that they did not come loose.

How’s this for an answer? Instead of a crossing, build a bridge over the tracks? That way we don’t have to see problems like this.
At least the Gates is shaking...... I seen another Malfunctioned Crossing where 1 Gate just Shook and the Lights were Flashing and the Shaking Gate was getting too much for it that 1 of the 4 Lights got Loose and started Dangling off the Pole!
