I never had this figure. I always eyed him in stores though but never asked mom to get him or saved my allowance for him. I don't mind the purple. The techno-viper had a soft spot for me because of the color and yeah the accessories. This figure is cool and I imagine even without the mask, he could dive deeper than usual considering how much Mindbender experimented on EELS.
The webbed hand and card art were what caught my attention as a kid. Getting my first figure with flippers was definitely a motivating factor too. My brother and I only got presents on the other's birthday on two occasions he got Wet Suit on my birthday and I got Hydro Viper on his. Must have been something about "bonus" frogmen. Haha! I managed to hang on to all of the other gear, but the end of one of the hoses split almost right away and both were soon lost. The Demon didn't need hoses anyway. The pegs make good fangs and, at times, in my head canon they have gills. Speaking of head canon, while watching your review (always super-chill, Steve!), I developed my new Hydro Viper head canon: Dr. Mindbender only made about 50 of these guys and over the years, due to battlefield casualties and others going a bit insane and AWOL (some say they still lurk around Cobra Island...), there's only about o dozen Demons still in Cobra's service. They are the elite of the elite amongst Cobra's naval commandos. If there isn't blood in the water, don't worry, there will be!
Awesome! Yeah man, that’s such a cool trope - the defunct science program and the few surviving experimental troopers. Really adds something new to the Joe mythos. These stories need to be told!
I like the continuity between Hydro Viper and the Sea Slugs in terms of color pallet. And Hydro is also cool as a Cobra La connection. His color is close to Nemesis Enforcer's. :{
Yeah I was gonna say..the reddish-purple for Cobras in the late 80's was some of my favorite stuff. Toxo Viper too, though I only own the Funskool figures.
Thanks for another great review. I was fortunate enough to pick this figure up (complete), before I knew anything about him. He just looked so alien, I had to add him to my Cobra forces!
I love how Steve obsessively combs over the details on figures and ties them together with existing gear and technology. This is probably one of the best renditions of an underwater troop that Cobra has to offer. While it sucks that his left hand can't hold any accessories, it's a really unique sculpt and an underrated troop builder..I'm assuming most collectors won't seek these figures out unless they are complete or near to it.

But if it falls into my possession...I won't make Elliott's face about it. Ok great review. I gotta find action force #14 somewhere and read it.
